of $10,000 to do it.

- The designers have all had
about two months to work,

and this is when it gets
really exciting

because they're making things

but still second-guessing
themselves

My first stop is Santa Fe to
check in with Hester Sunshine.

Mm.

- Welcome to Santa Fe.
- Oh, my God.

We're, like, in a video game.
- [ laughs ]

It is amazing in here.

Oh, my God. This is so fabulous

- This is my wife, Honey.

- So nice meeting you.

- It is very weird to see
Christian

in Santa Fe, New Mexico,

but it is also exciting
to show him

my house and my wife
and my life.

Are all these things--like,
these are just, like,

collectibles that you have?

- The paintings
are my mom's artwork.

- Oh, my God. Amazing.
- And then everything else

is just doodads and things.

- Like, if you need a lobster,
there is one.

- I'm excited to see
what you've been doing.

I literally, like, feel like

- What's the inspiration?
- Okay, so my inspiration--

Here's my little
inspiration board.

- I'm calling it Y2K Coco,

and I wanted to do a mashup
of Y2K digital tech encoding

and mix it
with the rococo period,

which to me has a lot
of similarities.

- There's so many ideas.
- Yeah,

and there's so many prints
as well.

- Lot of prints.
- Lot of prints.

- This is my own print design
that I did.

- That's your rococo--
- Yeah, so I drew

all of this off
of circuit boards.

- Mm-hmm.
- And digitally manipulated

this angel image.
- Really cool.

- While it's nice to see

all of these pieces, I will say,
they actually are made

really beautifully...

...which is really nice to see,
and I think when Elaine left you

and she was kind of like,
"Focus on the finishing..."

- Yeah.

- I just have two words
for you--quality control.

I wanna see you step it up
in terms of the fabric choices

and the finish.

- I think you need
something solid,

and you have nothing solid.
- Yeah, I have nothing.

- It's a lot of look,
every look.

- Yeah.

I think that I'm doing
some really amazing

and innovative stuff here.

What I'm going to show
on that runway

is something that no one has
ever seen, thought,

or heard of before, and I am
ready to dress the whole world.

- I'm so glad I got to see it.

- I haven't been to
Fort Lauderdale in a while,

but I love it.
It's like a gay island.

This is amazing. You can cook.

- That's literally what I did.
- I actually had to take

my dining room out.

- Turned the house
into his personal studio.

to support him, absolutely.

- My husband has given me
the strength

to go through all this.

- Without him, nothing of this

was able to be...real.

- Wow. Oh, my gosh.
There's so much!

- So the inspiration
of my collection

came from the basket that
the indigenous

in my country make
for a palm tree.

I tried to recreate the fiber
of the palm tree.

- That's gorgeous.

- And my dad helped me to create
these belts.

He work always with leather,
so he helped me

to make all the belts,
all these backs.

- Beautiful.

You know, it's so interesting,
like, looking at these,

some of them feel
a little...overworked.

Like they feel like you're
trying too hard

to make them cool
and interesting.

That's why I think this is
so amazing,

'cause it's actually
quite simple.

I think Sebastian's collection
is really interesting,

but he's trying to show
everything that he can do

ín one look, and sometimes
a really quiet,

beautiful, simple piece
can speak volumes.

Nina's concern was she wasn't
too sure

who your woman was
that you're designing for.

- Work on how you articulate
what that woman is.

- I always have a hard time
making the story

of the woman
behind the collection,

so maybe I need to figure it out

and make everything look
more cohesive, like...

- Okay, good,
so then you can still

make a few new things, right?
- A few new things, yes.

Christian say my clothes look
like I'm trying too much,

and I agree. I always have
a problem doing basic stuff.

I have to try to control myself.

You have to listen sometimes.

- Okay.

- I'm excited to see
Bishme's collection today.

I think I'm gonna see something
that's inspired by his hometown,

Baltimore, because he had
that inspiration

throughout the competition.
[ knock on door ]

And I can't wait.

Bishme.
- Hey there. How are you?

- How are you? Wow, I love
your studio. It's amazing.

- Thank you so much.

- How have you been?
How have you been feeling?

- I'm just been trying
to process everything

you guys said
and the judges as well

and incorporate that
into my new style of designing

and source and inspiration.

- Bishme, you've shown us
shoulders, peplum, lamé.

Decide very clearly who you are
and show us that.

- Is the collection gonna be
inspired by Baltimore?

- The buildings in Baltimore.

Abandoned buildings
and some new buildings.

When I applied
for "Project Runway,"

I was homeless.

Um...

I was living in my studio,

and I felt like I was
like an abandoned house,

but with abandoned buildings,
sometimes it's potential there

to rebuild it to be something
better than what it was.

- This is looking cool.

- Thank you. A lot of the things
I did were just a lot of

detail that look like brick,
and I'm stuck in between

two ideas--one was to make it
into a romper or a jacket.

- This is really cool,
and this is gonna be something,

but other than that, you don't
really have anything.

- Yeah.
- And--And--And...

do you know what
you're gonna do?

Do you know, like, is this
gonna be a pant?

Is this gonna be a top? Like...

I'm a little nervous.
- I'm a lot of nervous.

- Bishme has a lot to do,
actually. I was a bit surprised.

He has a lot of ideas.
He's sketching a lot,

but there's no physical work
being done.

You have literally two months

to make basically, like,
nine looks.

You got one, maybe.

Pick a favorite one on this wall
that you love--

something that
you wanna make next.

What's the next thing
you're gonna make?

- Oh, God.
- Well, you gotta know.

What are you doing tomorrow?
- I love this.

- Okay, great. This is what
you're gonna make tomorrow.

What fabric's gonna be in?

- I would love to see it

- You can make a collection
in two months.

- You can do it.

But it's hard, and it's gonna be
super stressful for him now,

even, I mean, more so
than anyone.

You have to just start
making stuff.

Like, you really do.

- Two looks kind of half done

didn't really give me
a perspective

of what the collection's
gonna be at all.

So, yeah, I'm a little worried.

I was definitely expecting
to go see Garo

in his studio
in New York City,

and going upstate
is a little country for me,

but it's actually
really peaceful,

and I'm down with it.

It's all about just, like,
space, galaxies.

and black holes
and all of that,

so I'm looking for things
that glimmer,

that have texture and just
lots of lines and ridges

and everything that I'm doing.

- I love this.

- Like, I think this is
really cool.

I love the fabric.
It's amazing.

And then is this happening?

- That's look number one,
actually.

- Oh, is it?
- Yeah.

It has, like, a belt that just,
like, clips over it.

- With this red.
- Yeah.

- Garo's collection
is very Garo.

It's a lot of pieces
from other times,

which is interesting,
but it can go dated

and it can be a bit try-hard.

You wanna do so many things.

Every look is, like,
very different.

Karlie gave you that advice

to stay away
from the costume world.

- But you have amazing ideas.
You think in another galaxy.

It's a matter of distilling that
into a tasteful collection

that can be commercially viable.

- I think it's more about
how to make them feel like

you actually wanna wear them.

All four finalists are
totally different

but really inspiring because
I felt like every place I was,

I was submerged
in a new fantasy world.

I'm one the wilderness.
Am I camouflaged?

- Yes.
[ laughter ]

We are not
at the finish line yet.

There is one more challenge
before the final show.

I am very pleased
with my collection.

However, I was supposed
to do 10 looks,

but I did about 14 looks.

- This is nice.
- So I'm going to have to make

some very big decisions.

- Guys, you can't look at it
till it's ready!

I did try to take
Christian's words to heart,

but I didn't really
tone it down.

Where I might have done
a head-to-toe print look,

I put in a plain shirt
and changed a jacket

that was gonna be printed
to be solid

with a printed lining.

- You have to sew this by hand,
right?

- All of it. This whole thing's
sewn by hand.

- Oh, my God. Beautiful.

I think everybody here
at this point is a front runner.

But I don't know. I've never won
three times like Hester.

- It looks good.
- And of this--Ah.

- Well, look, everything over
there needs a button or lacing.

- You're not missing
two outfits.

When Christian came, I had
about two and a half-ish pieces

kind of done, and now I have
eight pieces.

I'm just gonna use my time
wisely

and present something that I
know is gonna be mind-blowing

and something I know that'll
represent me.

- You'll figure it out.

supposedly.

- I have, like, I have way
too many options,

way too many things unfinished.
- Well, whatever options

One thing that really happened
that throughout the collection,

um, my sister--I found out
she has colon cancer.

So it was a lot trying
to take that in,

and then a family member passed,
but I'm here now,

so it's like...

My sister is one
of my biggest cheerleaders.

She purchased my first
sewing machine when I was 13.

She's my best friend,
and she's one of those people

who encouraged me to keep going
for my dreams.

- Bishme, I'm sorry to hear

for your loved ones.

- I think being here,
the best part is no contact

so we, like, can focus.

is what I always love to do,

is to combine three eras--
little bit of '70s/'20s

elephant pant,
a Victorian fit on the jacket,

and then some futurism
with clean lines.

Hester, let's start with you.

- My collection
is very print-heavy,

and Nina had tasked me
with creating a breather look

that had no print at all.

It actually is not what
I started to make.

I made this entire thing today
in three hours.

Um, yeah. I know. It's crazy.

I tried to make
an all-white look,

and I ended up sewing
through my finger last night.

The machine needle went all
the way through my finger,

and I bled all over it.
- That's the worst.

- Oh!
- Yeah, I was like,

so I should just scrap it
and start from scratch,

and I literally just hodgepodged
this with what I had,

and I love it.

- When I was speaking to Hester,
she really resisted this.

I mean, every time I was like,
it's just gotta be a solid,

she would come back to me
with an excuse

or like, "But could it be...
color block?"

I'm so glad I pushed you.

- Honestly, I'm so glad
you pushed me,

'cause otherwise this would be
a very different story.

- I really love
what you did here.

Would you kindly turn around?

I love that little bow
in the back.

I like the way you think
about taking this fur.

- What is that fabric
that we're looking at?

- It's the same fur
that's on here.

- I think it's such
an interesting use of fur,

and like a fun, young way
to wear it.

- You've obviously figured out
how to take the most

unconventional materials
and to use it so that

you're still flattering the
body.

- What you've done here
with the solid,

it feels like a print
without it being print.

You have kind of a contrast
in the personality of print,

and it feels like
a real collection.

- Thank you.

- Is there a cohesive kind of
storyline to the collection?

- It's a bunch of showpieces
'cause I kind of

am a showpiece designer,

and I strive
to kind of create trend

that people are excited to see,
and I think that the collection

is the best thing I've ever made
in my life.

- Thank you, Hester.

Sebastian, will you please
tell us about the look

that Nina assigned you?

- Well, Nina told me to make
a dress

that need to have
a little more of movement

because all my collection is
very tailored,

so I made an evening gown, and I
tried to incorporate elements

of my collection
in this new design.

This, when it came out,
it just felt so fresh,

and I can see all
of the perfect finishing

on the edges there, and that
makes all the difference

with a chiffon like that.

- What I loved
about your collection

is this is a runway collection.

I could see this
at New York Fashion Week.

And there's geometry
to everything here--

the lines, the triangles.
- You needed this.

One thing that I've noticed
about your work,

it is always a pull between
the strict and the soft.

- I think some of the shapes
and some of the movement

of my collection came from my
background as a ballet dancer.

'cause in ballet,
you have to be really stiff

to be able to look soft outside.

- Okay, you're a ballet dancer,
too.

Is there anything you can't do?
- I...I was...

- How did we just learn
about this?

- I was in a ballet school
for eight years,

and I graduated as
a professional ballet dancer,

but I fall in love of
how they make the garments

for the place,
and I moved to fashion.

- The purity of the design
really came alive.

This belt--I can see it
at Hermes.

I mean, I would pay a lot
of money for that belt.

There's so many positive things
to say

about each
of these three looks.

I mean, that burnt orange look
is so mind-blowing.

- This is leather, laser-cut
and then weaving by hand.

- Your craftsmanship
and your skill

is just on another level.

- Thank you, Sebastian. Bishme.

- Nina informed me
that I would be best at like

an outerwear type of feel.
The first silhouette that I had

at first was a bomber jacket
with pants,

and, uh, after my walk-through
with Christian,

I think he saw that I was stuck
on that outfit,

so he was just like, "Don't--
Don't think so much like that.

"That doesn't have to be
the exact outfit.

Just try to make
an outerwear piece."

I'm just proud that I didn't
stop, so, uh...

- I'm disappointed.
I'm not going to lie.

- I understand.

- I do love your skirt.
I do love your top.

That black look--You can
make that for me.

I will completely wear it.

I don't know what happened here.

It feels like it had
no direction whatsoever.

- Why these fabrics?
Why this combination of fabrics?

- Honestly, it was just
taking scraps together

just to complete something
and blend it in

and at least get to a place
where stuff is done.

- I'm sorry that you struggled
with the outerwear.

- I'm sorry,
'cause this is not...

[ sighs ] When you're sitting
here trying to create

your best thing and someone tell
you that you have this much time

in your studio,
you have nowhere else to go,

and then a family member passed,
and then my sister finding out

that she has colon cancer,
so there was just so much

that I kept trying
to focus there.

- So what you have to do
if you are gonna go forward,

do what you do best.
You know how to make clothes.

Go on auto-drive.
You would not be here

if you didn't have it
in yourself

to stand up and do this.

If your head was
in a better place,

and you had more time, how would
that look be different?

- What I had in mind was making
like a light spring/summer,

like moto jacket type style
with pants

and, um, a nice top.

But if you move forward,

can you get that ready
for the runway?

- Yes.

Last but not least, Garo.

Will you tell us about the piece
that you created for Nina?

- She gave me the challenge
to do a tailored suit

that someone could wear
during the day

but also wear at night.

- What fabric did you use
to make the suit?

- It's a stretch wool crepe.

- I thought you picked a
smart fabric to make it happen.

Is the jacket on right?

Because it seems
a little off-kilter to me.

- It's a skew.
- Why is it so ill-fitting?

Did you get
her measurements wrong?

- 'Cause see, look, if this
comes all the way up the back,

it comes up her shoulder,

and all it would have taken
is, like, one more hour

for me to dart this back,

and we would have
that silhouette.

- I don't know if the design
is so modern.

- It's like we're just missing
Melanie Griffith,

and she's in "Working Girl"--
the hair, the earrings,

the Mugler-esque jacket.

I know that you're very good
at tailoring.

But this in silhouette
and certainly in fabrics,

all three of them lack
a freshness.

- The other reveal dress,
I also don't think

was very successful.

It felt very...clunky.

- It actually snaps
completely off.

Because I basically wanted
a dress for a cocktail party,

and then when the night gets--
when it gets late,

she wants to party.

- Oh, I see. Okay. Well, that
did not happen in the runway.

However, I do love the sequin
dress that is in the back.

I like how you played with
the leather and the sequins.

It made it very interesting
to me.

- In my collection,
there's something for everybody.

I made 16 ensembles.

'Cause I wanted just to have
a range.

that are a cut above the rest.

Hi, ladies.

- I am so shocked this happened.

I wasn't expecting this.

I'm crushed.

- Do you mind turning around

When she walked, I--This really
upset me so much,

how it just was so wrong.
- Me, too.

- The placement of the fabric,
the choice of the fabric.

- It's like a potato sack.
- It is a bedazzled potato sack.

It would be so much easier
to send someone home

when they are consistently bad,

but it's like you have this
standing next to this,

which I think celebrities
would call this in

This has a lot of pull appeal,

which is important
for a designer.

- Garo's models,

Is this what you were
asking for?

- Not necessarily.

- If he's known as
a good tailor,

that's not good tailoring.

- Technically, he can sew.

I think to make a suit
in a day is very challenging.

But the taste is an issue
with Garo.

- I think he's really,
really talented.

He designs this retro,
futuristic vision,

which is...amazing because it's
so authentically him.

- I think Garo has risen to the
occasion on certain challenges,

um, that require a degree
of creativity

and pushing the boundaries
that some of the other designers

weren't able to deliver against.

My big question about Garo
is, is there an audience

for his work?

- Okay, so I think we can all
agree that for this challenge,

Bishme had the worst
11th look.

- Yeah.
- But we're not just judging

on this look alone. We're
judging on the collection.

- Garo is an expert tailor
and craftsman. No doubt.

To me, it's not about
craftsmanship.

It's about choice.

And no mentor is gonna help you
learn that.

- No. You're right.

- You're born with that
or you're not.

- Here's my concern
about Bishme.

I think that Bishme has
the taste.

- Yeah.
- But he is not done.

He only has eight looks done.
- Yeah.

- I feel like we were throwing
lifelines out to Bishme

to help him convince us
why he should be here.

And the reality is, I believe
he's given up on himself already

and it's hard to fight
for someone...
