Well,

the concept of the song, it's always
been about loss. The whole record's

loss, and this song is about the fear of
losing somebody.

We wanted to do something that wasn't
expected, and I think what would be

expected for a video, especially a song
with the word ghost in it, is do

something creepy in a house with ghosts
and stuff.

I thought, instead of that, let's do
something really unexpected and chop off

all my hair and make it World War II and
have lots of explosions and stuff.

I know that when we were talking about
videos, one of the ideas that Gerard

always wanted to do was a World War II
kind of war theme.

The thing about videos is like...

You know, when we were younger and, you
know, maybe rocking out in front of our

mirrors, like, it's like a dream, you
know, playing on stage and, like, in

of people is a dream come true. Being
able to do videos is a dream come true.

So, you know, we try to take that to the
fullest extent.

I saw Mark, and we had lunch during
Helena, and I said, well, how do you

about making, like, a real movie instead
of, like, a rock video? And he said, I

would love to do that. I said, well,
could you do World War II? And he said,

yeah, absolutely.

Hi, this is Mark Webb. This is day one
of My Chemical Romance's Ghost of You

video. We're at the American Legion,
built in 1929.

This is a place where they used to have
get -togethers for veterans, basically.

I'm the historian of the post, and I've
been here 26 years, and I know

everything about this place.

This music video that you're doing...

Looks just like it did in a picture that
I have upstairs in a museum that was

taken in 1944.

And that whole room was full of exactly
what you have.

Men and women in the military here for a
ball for their entertainment while they

were back from the war.

We're all reenactors.

We do this for fun. So usually we pay
money to go do this, and today they're

paying us.

There's two main scenes in the video.
The first scene is...

the performance, which is the stuff at
the bar, and it's us in our dress

screens, and then there's the war.

And it just works so great. Like, you
know, the verses of the song are just

quiet and mellow, and then the choruses
kind of kick in, and it just seems like

a really good marriage of the music and
the visuals.

How's it going, man? How are you doing?
Good. So we're at the one day one on

this. Yeah, we're day one of the video.

We're in some American Legion Hall in
Los Angeles.

It's cool and creepy.

Just started.

Got our hair pinned down.

I got these weird glasses we're going to
wear.

And here's the end of the film. We're
just bumping into Ben.

It's a big moment here.

I've always had some sort of beard -ish
thing going on.

Gerard cut his hair, so I'll shave.

My hair was this short when we started
the band.

And then I never cut it.

I mean, I, like, would trim it and shape
it and stuff, but I never cut it until

yesterday for this video. Check it out.
Like, they managed to get all my hair

bunched up into this little ball here.
And as long as I'm, like, this, you

facing the camera this way, this way, or
this way, you can't see it.

We're going to come around, do some
close -ups, and then we're going to have

you, like, kind of like late -night
drunken singing along to a jukebox kind

performance kind of stuff. Really
relaxed.

So, hey, Devon, are you ready to bring
him in? Yes. All right. I want this to

be, like, kind of a curl.

Everybody's really high up there in the
background, then it kind of comes down,

and you're lower here, so we can see
everybody.

You've got to be kind of careful not to
block each other's devices.

roll ambient playback.

Yeah, everybody loosen up. Loosen up. We
can even take some of the jackets off.

Would we have our tie out if we were

know what I mean? Stuff like that. You

know what I mean? Like, roll ambient

You just kind of see us all just hanging
out and being friends, which we are.

It's really easy to do all this stuff
because we're like brothers.

I think the next thing we're going to be
doing is the ballroom scene, the

performance scene. We're going to be
playing, and there's going to be, I

like 30 couples, guys and girls dancing
and doing their thing.

It's going to be really, really awesome.

I'm uncomfortable, and I'm going to film
ballroom dancing.

Can you interview Mike? Can I hold the

Pretty damn awesome. I'm kind of upset
that I'm going to die tomorrow.

Right now we're setting up for the
performance scene. The video is broken

two different parts. There's the
flashback dance sections, and then

battle sections.

The flashback dance sections are during
the verse, which is a little bit more

mellow and calm and serene, whereas the
battle scenes are kinetic and fast and

hard cut and handheld.

Right now this is all about creating
kind of an emotion.

Move back a little bit.

All right, here we go. Stand by.

And make up.

Really quickly. Step in, please.

And all things that you never ever told

Hey, how's it going? I'm Dave. I'm the
visual effects supervisor.

We just finished up the shot where we're
doing crowd duplication, making less

people look like more people. Kind of
like what we did on the last My Chemical

Romance video.

The next setup that we have here is an
overhead shot of the dance floor where

all the G .I .s and the ladies were
dancing.

Then we're going to cut tomorrow to the
same shot overhead of the troops, the G

.I .s storming the beach. Tomorrow when
we shoot the beach, we're going to have

people running and we're going to cut
them out and put them into this existing

shot. And then when the beach comes in,
we're going to... cross -faded.

So everything looks like it's one final
composite and people are running in into

the middle of the scene and transition
to the beat.

It

all

went really well. I'm very happy with
the way the footage looks. The band is

doing great. They're very fun to work
with.

We're moments away from dropping the

Hey, hey, don't go from one side to the

Get in the middle of the boat. I still
see water coming in and out, it looks

like. Guys, calm.

Real calm.

I'm still off.

I think I'm going to throw up.

It's one of those things, you know. We
were shooting the shot. We had the door

coming down.

And what happened is the door scooped up
some water.

And there was too much weight on the
front.

How much water did it take?

A thousand gallons.

Yeah, over the course of about 20
seconds, the water started seeping,

raging inside the boat.

I have like a fear of harsh bodies of
water.

When I saw it starting to fill up, I was
getting nervous anyway.

I heard the word fail.

You're afraid of large bodies? There's a
very small body of water inside the

boat.

It's like a lake.

You know what it was? Luckily it was
handled well. When my balls got wet,

when I got scared.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

That's exactly what happened. I don't
know if this is water or pee.

The boat nearly f***ing sank, and an
hour later we're getting back on and

out to get more.

I just love that.

We're about to set up for the invasion.
We already did some Higgins Boat stuff

in the morning.

It was a little intense at times, a
little crazy, but we got a lot of really

good stuff.

So now we're going to have a safety
meeting because there's a bunch of

explosions that are going to go on here.

Then we'll start the invasion.

Look forward to it. It's going to be
fun.

I just want to, like, take the blood
down. Hey, can I get makeup on the bed

quick? I need makeup now. I just want to
take down the blood.

What about under your glasses? That's

it up. Now we're locking it down.
