Over
the course of my career,

I have done some arguably
crazy things like being bitten

intentionally by an alligator--

Or happily submitting myself to
a sting from the Japanese giant

hornet.

All of my brushes
with intense pain

have been done in the name
of science and education.

So today's experiment
loosely falls into

those exact same categories.

As an extreme
educator, this is also

the point where I
tell you never attempt

to recreate the following
science experiment.

Thermopolis, Wyoming, is without
question one of the greatest

locations the "Brave Wilderness"
team and I have ever visited.

It's a quaint little town,
and with a population

of around 3,000 people, it
has an unforgettable charm.

They are famous for many things
including the world renowned

Wyoming Dinosaur Center where
aspiring paleontologists can

actually spend a day
looking for fossils.

Then you have Dairy Land,
which probably boasts being

the birthplace of pickle pops.

Yup, this is where
I set the world

record for eating 10 of these
salty treats in 30 minutes.

Where's he going?

As if dinosaurs
and pickle pops weren't enough,

Thermopolis also has a
very catchy nickname,

the Hot City, which is
rightfully earned as they

stake claim to the world's
largest mineral hot spring.

Before we get hands on
with the hot springs

for this brilliant
experiment, first it's

important that we understand the
science behind these bubbling

pools of beauty.

These hot springs originate
in the Owl Creek Mountains

where surface water, like
rain and melting snow,

seep down through
layers of porous rock.

As the water flows
deeper into the earth,

it's heated by a
geothermal gradient.

When the heated water
reaches fractured rocks

within the
Thermopolis anticline.

It's channeled back
up to the surface,

and, voila, you
have hot springs.

But are these hot springs hot
enough to make me breakfast?

We are just a few feet from
the main source of Big Spring,

which is the largest
mineral spring

in the entire United States.

Now this water-- oh, yeah.

Woo.

Yeah, that is definitely hot.

What we're going
to try to do today

is find out whether or not a
hot spring can boil an egg.

What I've done in advance
is prepare a couple of eggs.

So you see this here.

That is an egg in cheesecloth
tied to a shoestring.

Now we're going to try
this experiment in three

different time intervals--

5 minutes, 15 minutes,
and 30 minutes.

This water stays at a consistent
127 degrees Fahrenheit.

The actual boiling
temperature of water

is 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

To make hard boiled
eggs, you usually

need to put a fresh egg
inside of boiling water

and keep it there
for 10 minutes,

so you may be
saying to yourself,

well, the math doesn't
exactly add up.

If you have to have boiling
water to make hard boiled eggs,

how is this experiment
going to work?

Basically what we're going
to do is keep the eggs in

there longer than it would
take to normally boil an egg

and see what happens.

Boiling eggs in the hot
springs is completely

fitting because the
entire area already

smells like rotten eggs.

That's not because
thousands of people

have tried this experiment
before me but instead

as a result of gas bubbles
rising to the surface

that contain hydrogen sulfide.

H2s is a colorless, poisonous,
flammable, and corrosive

chemical compound which has the
distinct stench of rotten eggs.

Talk about some
delicious science.

All right, it is officially been
five minutes, which means it's

time to pull the first egg.

I gently slice open
the cheesecloth.

Wow, it's really hot.

OK, there it is.

No.

Definitely not.

Oh, wow, it's hot.

It's really hot.

But it is definitely
not hard boiled.

Not going to be eating that one.

I'm going to actually just
dump this off to the side here.

And we wait for another 10
minutes for egg number two

to maybe finish cooking.

Hey,
Coyote, what time is it?

I think it's been
10 minutes or so.

Oh, yeah, actually
it's been 11 minutes.

OK, we got to check
the second egg.

Oh, yeah, that is a
hot egg right there.

Aah.

The shell is really soft, but it
is definitely not hard boiled.

Hold on.

Let me crack it open.

It's hot, way more
gelatinous though.

Look at that.

Considerably thicker
than the last egg.

I can actually hold the
entire thing in my palm.

OK, we're making
some progress here.

That is definitely
starting to cook.

Long before I had
the idea to boil eggs

and even before the arrival
of fur traders in the west,

Native Americans
discovered the hot springs

and referred to them
as medicine waters.

It was believed that these
springs had incredible healing

powers, which had the
ability to cure everything

from disease to gunshot wounds.

Fast forward to the modern
advancements in science

and today we know that
the water in these springs

has nearly six times the
total dissolved solids found

in drinking water, basically
classifying these springs

as a supercharged vitamin pill.

Our first two eggs
weren't exactly edible,

but with any luck, our third
day is going to be the charm.

Ahh, that is a hot
egg right there.

It's just about
my breakfast time,

so I'm really hoping
that this egg is cooked

so I can actually eat it.

Here we go.

There it is.

An egg that's just cooked for
30 minutes in a hot spring.

Is it hard boiled?

I think there's a good chance.

All right, here we go.

1, 2-- oh.

No, not fully cooked
even after 30 minutes.

Do you guys like your
eggs extra runny?

Oh, no.

It did not cook.

Well, I guess that proves it.

127 degree Fahrenheit water
is not capable even after 30

minutes of boiling an egg.

Now let me get some of
this yolk off of me.

Ugh.

Oh, it smells horrible.

Gross.

Warning, never
attempt to recreate

the following experiment as hot
water can cause serious burns,

trauma, and medical bills.

OK, this is it, the moment
you have all been waiting for.

Am I capable of keeping my
hands in the scalding water

of this natural hot spring?

Now keep in mind this is
127 degrees Fahrenheit.

Your hottest hot tub is
probably around 104 degrees.

So am I going to be
able to keep my hands

in there for 60 seconds?

Not likely.

30 seconds, maybe.

15 seconds, I think that's
probably pretty fair.

So you guys are ready.

about to enter the burn zone

with a hot spring.

Here we go.

1, 2, 3.

Oh, wow, it gets hotter
the deeper you go.

Man, that is crazy hot.

Holy cow.

Wow.

Unbelievable how
hot that water is.

Oh my gosh.

I thought it might be
able to last 60 seconds,

but as soon as your fingers
go down through the surface

and get closer to
the bottom, the water

gets hotter and
hotter and hotter,

and I could actually feel
the blood inside my fingers

as if it was starting to boil.

That was crazy.

My hands are tingling right
now from the intensity

of that heat.

I definitely say the
takeaway from this episode

is that first of all this water
is not hot enough to boil eggs.

Even after 30 minutes, our
science experiment failed.

And when it comes down to the
ridiculous nature of actually

placing my hands
into the hot springs,

I know that was
entertaining, but, guys,

it is all about safety.

These hot springs
are incredibly hot.

If you were to fall
into this water

or just place your hands
into there for too long,

you could face a
serious burn situation.

The Erie Islands are a
world unlike anything you

have ever imagined.

Separated from the
mainland of Ohio

by the aquamarine
brilliance of Lake Erie,

some are bustling
with human activity

while others are cloaked
with the allure of adventure.

Today we are kayaking toward
the shore of North Bass Island.

The smallest and
northernmost of the three

Bass Islands, this landmass is
nearly uninhabited by humans.

Our primary goal was to
explore the island's interior

as we search for native animal
species, and in the process,

we happened upon
the haunting remains

of an abandoned farmstead.

This crumbling structure had
nearly been swallowed back

into the island's
underbelly forgotten by time

and those who must
have once lived here.

The dense overgrowth
of vegetation

made it nearly impenetrable,
yet in my mind,

it was a lost piece of history
that I simply had to explore.

Can you come this direction?

You can see the front
porch right there,

and that is the entryway.

So what I'm going to do
now is explore the interior

of this abandoned house.

Hopefully it's not haunted.

Let's go, guys.

Going up the stairs.

Looks like a pretty
solid structure.

This house is likely
over 100 years old.

Look at all this debris,
and this is the front door.

Whoa, old carpet.

Wow, look at that.

It's like a cellar down there.

That looks super creepy.

Going to try to not
fall through the floor.

Now, Mario's on the outside
scouting for pieces of wood

that we can flip that might
have snakes under them.

Actually here's a piece
of wood right here.

See if there's
anything under it.

There's a lot of
bird nests in here.

Nothing.

This used to be the
fireplace right here.

Check that out.

All falling apart.

You go this way into the main--

what was likely the dining
room with another fireplace.

Off to the side here, looks
like this was a washroom.

Look at that, an old tub.

And you can see that the
structure's so solidly

built that it's still standing.

Look at the paint
chipping off the walls.

That is solid.

Whoa.

Don't trip, Coyote.

And you go this direction, now
it's actually a great place

to look for snakes
because they could

be hiding up in the rafters.

There's the basement.

Look at that.

That looks way too
dangerous to go down into.

There's an old refrigerator.

Looks like piece of the
foundation have collapsed.

Those are the
stairs right there.

That looks like a good place
for a horror movie to begin,

so I'm going to just avoid that.

Going back this
direction, you've got--

wow.

This must have been
a back family room

maybe or maybe also a kitchen.

Look at the linoleum floor.

It's all breaking apart.

This looks like perhaps it
was a walk out to something.

It's filled with scrap trash.

Scrap trash, if
that's a real word.

This is a side deck.

Look at this.

Come out onto the back porch.

This direction, down
there into the woods,

you can see pieces of
the chimney actually

that have collapsed off right
there in the underbrush.

Now, guys, it's important to
note that a location like this

is very dangerous.

You should never enter
an abandoned structure

without a safety team.

Of course, I have Mario
waiting on the outside

just in case something
were to happen

but definitely a dangerous
thing you wouldn't

want to do by yourself.

I'm going upstairs now.

Ooh.

I'll tell you what.

During the daylight,
it's not that scary.

But at night, this
would definitely feel

like a horror movie for sure.

Look at this.

There's an old mattress
all falling apart.

You've got wasps
flying around in here,

mud wasps that have built
their homes, their little nests

up in the corners.

Check this out.

This must have been a bedroom.

Look at that up there.

Those are all mud
wasp nests, and there

you've got a swallow nest.

Crazy.

You see where the
ceiling's beginning

to collapse in right there.

We're going to just avoid that.

This is actually the roof
out above the back porch.

And you can see how
all of the forests

has just grown
onto the structure.

All right, let's go this way.

This is a no cut take.

This is like a howling with the
pack haunted house exploration.

Going this direction, this
was probably a back bedroom.

Wow, look at this.

The forest and all
this debris, maybe that

was a garage structure
at some point in time.

And look at this
view out the back.

Get the exposure there.

That is the vast expansive
nature of North Bass Island

right there.

Pretty cool looking.

Wow.

And I would guess
that this structure

is well over 100 years old.

It's clearly been
abandoned for a long time.

There's a bathroom back there.

Not much to see.

We're very careful
going down these stairs.

I'm sure this is dark.

Wow.

Very narrow stairwell.

It'd be tough to squeeze
furniture up that thing.

Going back to the
downstairs level now,

and what I do not see are
any snakes or any animals

for that matter at the moment.

Just an abandoned structure
taken over by wasps and birds.

Well, let's go
meet up with Mario.

He is on the outside
looking for snakes.

He hasn't called me
yet, so I'm thinking

he has not found anything.

But we will continue our
search for the snake species

here on North Bass Island.

That was pretty cool,
exploring an abandoned house.

Where'd you go buddy?

I made it out alive.

Oh, there he is.

I made it.

Exploring an abandoned structure
that appears to be lost in time

certainly brings with it a
sense of daring adventure.

Yet at the same time, it
also carries a heightened

chance of perilous danger.

Never explore an
environment like this

alone and always make sure to
have the proper permissions

before breaking trail into an
area or a structure that may

be considered private property.

It's hot out here, Cory.

Have you ever been
inside a volcano before?

I have not.
OK.

Neither have I. This is going to
be a first for the Brave crew.

This sand, it's all
around us right now,

is how this entire
valley started.

That's why the rock
formations are here.

This was once called the
ancient desert sand sea,

but over millions
of years, the sand

hardened into the
rock and the sandstone

that we see here before us
with the wind and the water

shaping all of the
sweeping textures that

make it so iconic.

Now this volcano erupted
27,000 years ago,

so we're going to
see a lot of stuff

like this, basalt, blown
out of the volcano.

It landed in miles away.

Looks like we got a
little bit further

to go before we get to the lava
field, but, man, I'm excited.

This is an adventure
with me for the books.

It's got to be.
It's got to be right up here.

Let's go.

Oh, man, this is cool.

Oh, that's the lava tube.

You could see it's coming up
from the earth right there.

And a lava tube is pretty much
a volcano's drainage pipe.

When magma rises to the
surface, there's a cap,

and that cap
pressurizes the magma.

It spreads that magma out
underneath the ground forming

lava tubes just like this.

It is very precarious in here.

You could see that the walls
are all fractured already.

This makes me a
little bit nervous.

Usually when your gut
gives you that feeling

like maybe you shouldn't
go too much further,

it's a good warning to heed.

But, oh my gosh, this
even goes further.

If you're brave enough,
I guess you could explore

through these lava
tubes, but I'm

not sure it's a very good idea.

I think that's enough lava
tube adventuring for me today.

I'm going to get
back on the surface.

Not a cloud in sight today.

It is a bluebird sky,
which means that the sun is

going to punish us.

Every step is
well-earned out here.

All right, there it is.

There's our path through.

This is how we're going
to get up and over

this range of sandstone.

If you guys are ready,
we got one last heave

before we see the volcano.

We're gonna get scraped up.

This stuff is sharp.

Well, I have good
news and bad news.

The good news is it's
opening up a lot.

Bad news is it's getting boosty.

And this is what
we call scrambling.

It's not walking.

It's not rock climbing.

It's scrambling.

Got to use your hands,
got to use your feet,

got a wedge your body in
between places for more support,

and happens to be a lot of fun.

As tiring as it is, I'm
really enjoying this.

Man, I tell you what, if
I was a mountain lion,

that's what I would be
calling home right there.

Don't look down now.

There it is.

This is so cool.

That's the volcano.

Surrounded by white sandstone.

All right, I think this where
we start making our ascent.

I can see the gray.

It's getting pretty steep.

Probably why they say this trail
is for advanced hikers only.

Now volcanoes like this one are
known as cinder cone volcanoes.

The reason they're called that
is because not only are they

in the shape of a cone,
but when the lava explodes,

it does so in very fine
fragments like this right here.

These are cinders in clinkers.

The clinkers have a
funny name for a reason,

and actually when they roll
down hills, they clink.

That is why it's
called a clinker.

Pretty cool, huh?

Oh, man.

Cory how we doing back there?

OK.

Legs are on fire.

Gonna come a long way look
how far down from that valley

over that mountain
and then right

here to where we're standing.

Certainly a full
day of adventuring.

We're about to see what's
waiting on the other side.

All right, there it goes.

That's the crater.

One of my favorite
expeditions we've done yet.

We've taken you on all
these wildlife adventures

over the years, and we
thought it was time to show

you what else was out there.

So many places on this
planet to explore,

and we're going to take you
with us every step of the way.

But, Cory, if I'm not mistaken,
we have a few more steps left.

Let's go down to the crater.

Wow.

Not even to the bottom and it
is already an incredible view.

Very slippery, very hazardous.

Definitely bring your
hiking boots if you

go on one of these adventures.

Just like that.

Yes.

I just got to--

gotta take a moment
and just soak this in.

Here we are.

We made it to the finale
of today's adventure

inside the cinder cone volcano
here at Snow Canyon State Park.

And now it's time to answer
the burning question.

I'm sure you're all wondering.

Mark, are you in
Cory in any danger

standing inside the
crater of this volcano?

No, we're not.

And the reason for that
is because this volcano

is extinct, no longer posing
a threat for an eruption.

Now that's not true
with all volcanoes,

so if you're going to go on an
adventure like this somewhere

else in the world
other than this park,

be sure to check out if it's
an active volcano or not

and be sure to check with
the park services first

because some volcanoes are
very, very, very dangerous

and we'd hate for anyone at
home to go on an adventure

that got themselves hurt.

But this adventure was
absolutely epic if I

don't mind saying so myself.

We made it to the
center of a volcano

for the very first time
of "Brave Wilderness,"

and I hope you guys
enjoy this expedition.
