and today real marshmallows.

- Yes.
- Ooh.

We didn't even have to

Here you go, bud.

Hey, hey.

Hey, easy.

I get ferocious for
marshmallows and deservingly

so because today's episode
is all about somebody who

actually loves marshmallows.

You know who I'm talking about?

Oh, yeah.

He's got a big sweet tooth.

Big, 750 pounds big.

A grizzly big.

That's right, guys.

We're going back to the
episode called "Grizzly

Attack," which was amazing.

We got to work with Adam,
a 750-pound male grizzly

bear to show you guys what to
do or not do if you ever find

yourself in that worst
case scenario where

you come upon a grizzly
bear in the wild.

So cook s'mores now
or after we do the work?

No, Mario, stop.

No.

First, we have to do
our work, and then we

can have our snacks.

So let's review the video
and then it's s'mores time.

All right.

Sounds like a plan.

Here we go.

There's your pine cone shot.

Back up real quick.

Hold on a second.

Just so you guys know
Mark loves to try

to get pine cones in shots.

But it's got to be
the perfect pine cone,

and it has to be
the perfect frame.

So we figured, you
know, well, let's

get an epic pine cone shot.

And he kicked off the
grizzly bear video.

Yeah, this a little
bit of a process.

You got to scour
the whole forest

for the perfect pine cone.

That's a good
look at pine cone.

And the right beam of light.

I'm pretty proud of that one.

I've got some other ones.
- Yeah.

That shot may
have won the award.

Is that the reason?

Let's not-- we'll talk
about the award afterward.

OK.

And we'll do that while
we're cooking s'mores.

And we tend to forget
that in the wilderness,

we are no longer at the
top of the food chain.

Oh, buddy.

I tell
you what, some of those shots

have been,

So pause it for just a second.

We're going to get into
how we got those shots,

but getting bear
shots is a lot tougher

than probably anybody thinks.

It's a lot of movie magic.

And it takes a lot
of courage, right?

It's actually a
little dangerous.

Very dangerous.

Absolutely.

Keep rolling, OK.

I've got a lot
of marshmallows.

COYOTE You
see we got the bear

tracks in the animation
here with some elephant

tracks, old logo.

Retro logo.

There's no wilderness

greater than the back
country of Montana.

The clouds
were epic this day.

It is home
to some of North America's

most incredible animals.

Every year, thousands
of adventurers,

Actually those
shots are from right

back here on property.

Escaping
the confines of everyday life.

So first time
we ever put a specialty

camera underneath a car.

I remember being like, man, I
hope we don't hit the camera.

Because we only had
one specialty camera.

That's the camera on the
front of my selfie stick.

Bear country.

They actually
pause that right there.

Go back to that shot.

What's cool is that
like, that's a real sign.

We didn't put that there.

We didn't print this and
hang it up on something.

Do you think people
realize that you're

actually in the shot?

You see a rear in the corner?

You're like walking by.

- It's a Where's Waldo shot.
- How many out there saw that?

If you really saw that
before I mentioned it,

tell me in the comment section.

I'm curious to see
how many people pick

up on those little details.
- Where's Waldo?

Where's Coyote?

Yeah but yeah we were hiking.

And we saw that and we had to
read it and obey what the sign

was saying, to be safe.

Is a common instance

it can happen when
hiking out here

in the back country of Montana.

So you're actually looking at

That was epic.

Yeah go back to that shot.

Yeah I mean,
Adam, he's roaring.

And you got Coyote
there with a hat.

Like that's just epic.

I remember we actually printed
those out, made some cards

and stuff.

We had some cool, cool
photographs and screen grabs

from that, and I'm really
close to that bear,

with like mouth full open,
giving you that display.

And it's nerve racking,
that's for sure.

You got a little hornet
friend hanging out here.

That's OK, it's only a two
on the insect

We're out here,
obviously outdoors,

and we have some
yellow jackets that

are attracted to marshmallow.

You know, if this becomes
a sting segment that's OK.

We already did that episode.

We'll be opportunistic.

Mark needs to get stung.

What about you?

No, let Coyote pick.

Keep it focused on
the bears, guys.

is Adam.

Now Adam was raised in
captivity and he's a bear that's

used for educational purposes.

And as an ambassador
for his species.

How nervous
are you right there?

Pretty nervous,
that's the closest I've

ever been to a Grizzly bear.

First time I ever worked
with a bear of this size,

or any bear for that matter.

Scenario
number one and best case

for you is, that you
stumble upon a grizzly bear

and it doesn't see you.

This has happened to you.

They've redone the real thing.

I've used this exact
scenario before in the wild,

Use your own advice, huh?

You turn
a corner and all of a sudden,

it's you and a grizzly bear.

You see the bear and
the bear sees you.

And this is the most
dangerous situation.

I love that shot there of
his eyes and I'm watching you.

Look how well it blends
into the environment.

Yeah it really looks
it's amazing there.

That's a good one to
talk about, so that roar

right there.

Yeah let's listen
to one more time.

Did Adam really make that roar?

Adam does not make that roar.

That's a huge misconception
about all bear films.

That's right.

In order for the trainers
to get them to open

their mouths in a
non-aggressive way,

it's actually food induced.

Basically you
wave a marshmallow

in front of Adam's
face and he opens

his mouth because he's going
to catch that marshmallow.

That's right and
he does get it.

He does get it, yeah.

He gets a lot of them.

Yeah Adam ate a lot of
marshmallows that day.

But as Mark mentioned, you see
tons of films or documentaries

where they add in that
sound effect after the fact.

Bear's actually don't roar.

Not unless they're really
angry and aggressive.

If a bear is roaring at
you in your face for real,

you're a lot of trouble.

Yeah so and
that's not something

that you want to happen
when you're making

a video about educating people.

We certainly don't
want to antagonize

the bear to get it to roar.

So it's a little movie magic.

Thought we'd clue you guys
in on how we did that.

Well and the care
and the comfort

that goes through making
something like this so

that the crew is safe
and the animal safe

is of the utmost importance.

Adam was never upset
during the filming.

He was actually very happy and
getting tons of marshmallows.

Whoa bear, whoa bear,

if that bear feels threatened,

I love that
perspective there.

Once you
know that the bear is out

of eye sight, you
hop it to your car or

wherever it was
that you came from,

I think he's
looking for a marshmallow

right there, actually.

You're always nervous
when there's a bear on set.

Oh man, having a
750 pound animal next to

you is quite intimidating.

Now what
happened there, Coyote?

I got up a little bit.

Adam swatting at
you, how was that done?

That's one of Adam's commands.

What's amazing is that Adam
has actually been featured

in a number of
different famous movies

and also television commercials.

He, just like you would train
a show dog or a canine working

with a police unit, these
bears are so smart you

can actually train them.

So he had different
movements that like,

they could do this or do this.

And he would go woo woo like
that and swing his paws.

He would put his ears back.

Amazing how smart he was.

Yeah and I think Adam was so
well behaved, so well trained,

that, and you tell me
how you felt. But to me

it almost like Adam
was like a big dog.

After a while like
it was like you

kind of like lost the
sense of like intimidation

because he was so well behaved.

I didn't.

Yeah I didn't lose,

When you're on the
ground like that,

that bear is literally about
4 feet from me swiping his

paws with full-on bear claws.

I was super nervous to do that.

You know, he was so big,
his presence was so big.

And sometimes when he
was doing his commands,

yes, it's intimidating.

But then he's got this
like look in his eyes

and his ears are
kind of like normal,

he does look you know gentle.

But you don't want
to get too close.

I got close, super close.

We could tell.

Whoa and that noise there
that you hear, that's real.

He was actually
making that noise.

Throw it to the bear

and try to distract it
so that you can get away.

Bad idea.

On your
back this is your barrier.

That's what most people think.

Throw your backpack at the bear.

Like a distraction?

You do not want to throw
your backpack at the bear.

As quickly as possible
get down here like this.

Tuck in.

Press your arms
against your legs.

And most importantly,
get your hands behind.

I remember
getting those shots.

So that's the closest.

That's the closest.

So actually hold there on that.

So you see this?

When he's like there, I'm
holding that specialty camera.

That's how we got
some of those shots

with like that
drool coming down.

So I'm holding a
camera next to my face.

One of the most nervous
situations I've ever been in.

That's bear nose and
jaws up against your neck

and your head.

Look how big his muzzle
is next to my head.

You said you could feel
him breathing on you.

Does it happen in the video
where he knocks your hat off?

Because I remember a couple,
do we pause or cut those?

I don't remember
if that's in there.

But it is in some takes.

We're like, he would
brush my hat off

and he's sniffing around.

I mean, the size of that bear's
head, next my whole entire head

could fit in his mouth
if he wanted it to.

I mean that's like "Revenant"
style right there, yeah.

I don't think Leo used
a real bear though.

I used a real bear,
Leo, just saying.

That was
my favorite shot.

Might
take a couple of bites,

he might take a
couple of swipes.

Using this,

That shot, these
were so tough to get.

You can actually, hold
on, that's kind of funny.

You could see here.

See that little mustache.

That's from all
the marshmallows.

Is that a marshmallow
mustache right there?

That's a marshmallow
mustache right there.

But he looks so angry
and aggressive there.

Again getting those
shots, what we did

is multiple camera angles.

Actually the specialty
cameras out sort of on sticks

and they would command
Adam to do these swipes.

We kept them from a low angle.

And a couple of times
he hit the camera.

I mean but he was
having a blast.

Yeah and it's not
like a stick to hit,

actually the sticks had a little
marshmallow on the end of them.

So kind of like this.

Right and he'd swipe at them.

Survival by about 90% Wow.

How did
Adam's breath smell?

Like marshmallows.

I just
gave you three great tactics

for surviving a bear encounter.

But there is one other thing
that could save your life,

bear spray.
Bear spray.

bear
country without it.

If you have a bear in,

It is one of the safest
things you can take with you

into the back country
but you're going

to be real close to that bear
to have to use that bear spray.

That's a last resort.

Sort of worst case scenario.

I think avoiding the
attack altogether

is the best [inaudible].

Paying attention to all
the warning signs or when

you're hiking, be
in groups, things

like that, that can actually

Being loud.

Yes singing songs.

You like to sing songs.

I sing lots of songs.
Yo, bear on the mountaintop

that's one of my favorites.

Bears use their noses

to follow their prey.

What I liked
about this episode is this

is one of the first ones
we did where we then

transitioned from
just like experience

into like educational
presentation.

Made this episode a
little more girthy.

It gave it more
substance, yeah.

This is like a very
real moment in the video

where Adam wasn't
really supposed to be

like coming closer to you.

He's eating the grass.

And you can see when
he moves his paw

closer uncomfortable you get.

Watch this.

Look at this,
these are quick moves.

You're like, oh boy.

So you may wonder
what is Adam eating here?

He's actually
eating the grasses.

He loves to just chop down
on these sweet grasses.

They're
omnivores, right Mario?

Yeah Grizzlies
are omnivores.

One feature
about this bear is incredibly

impressive is those front paws.

He's huge.

Absolutely
enormous and at the ends,

And the thing
that's important to note

is that Adam is 750
pounds as a grizzly bear.

Now this is sort
of the lower United

States grizzly bear variety.

You go further north
into Alaska and then

get into like the Kodiak bears.

They're well over 1,000 pounds.

Oh yeah sure,
you get bears that

are bigger than that, for sure.

- of a grizzly bear.

Grizzlies also have
incredible hearing.

And that's why you don't
often see bears in the wild

because they can hear you
coming from miles away.

Way more afraid
of you than you

really should be of them
unless you stumble upon one.

Look at him, he's just
nestled down in the grass,

Their
territory range from central

This is pretty cool.

Our editor, Chris,
actually put this together,

a nice little territory shot.

They've
been pushed to near extinction

here in the lower 48.

Only 800 Grizzlies still live
here in Montana and about 600

in Wyoming, all of whom live
at Yellowstone National Park.

Yeah bears.

Completely awe inspired to be

in the presence of a bear.

Look at him, he's
just like sitting there.

It's
something that hopefully

you never find yourselves in.

He did sort of do that
Winnie the Pooh sit sometimes.

Yeah, yeah
and he would scratch

himself I remember
he kind of just

started scratching himself.

Be brave, stay wild.

We'll see,

He's like I want
more marshmallows.

Well that's pretty cool.

Definitely one of the most
epic episodes we've ever made.

It is cool that it came in the
first season of Breaking Trail.

We went from snapping
turtles to Grizzly bears.

It's pretty big.

It definitely set the bar.

I mean it was by far the most
ambitious video of season one

that we tackled.

And you know, it also won
us a pretty cool award.

Mario, do you remember that?

Yeah, it's an award
winning segment.

Emmy award winning segment.

Emmy award winning
segment, it's

before all the other
awards, very first one.

Speaking of big things,
I think it's about time

to roast these marshmallows.

That's right, I
would say that the work

a mess guys, but.

Adam, this one's
for you, old bear.

Over the years

our adventures to Australia
have taught us the true essence

of what it means to be brave.

From its deadly snakes
to its lethal spiders,

bravery is required to
traverse these rugged lands.

But if there's any Australian
creature that has earned

the honor of being
most brave, it

may very well be Australia's
favorite fuzzy friend,

the koala.

Today I'm teaming up once again
with fellow YouTuber, Miller

Wilson, to learn more
about this endemic species

and how all koalas are proving
their bravery in the face

of historic wildfires.

Sadly, these fires
have threatened

their very existence.

What's going on, everybody?

We are back again
today in Australia

with our good friend and
fellow YouTuber, Miller Wilson.

And he's brought along
one of his friends, Mango.

And I can definitely see why
they get the name koala bear.

However maybe that's
a good place to start.

It is not a bear.
- It is not a bear.

It's actually a marsupial.

And the reason why
they get called

koala bear is because of their
teddy bear like appearance.

What does it
mean to be a marsupial?

A marsupial is a
mammal that has a pouch.

So they're in their pouch
for about six to nine months.

And then they'll climb out
onto their mother's back.

And it'll take about 18 months
before they make their journey

out into the wild.

And that's where
they'll start being

independent of their mothers
and feeding on eucalyptus,

which is actually toxic.

How is it that an animal is
able to eat such toxic diet?

Well it's because
of the microbes that's

in their digestive track.

How they actually get that is
from eating their mom's poop.

What?

When they're little,
they have to kind

of warm themselves up to
eating a big eucalyptus

leaf like that.

The mom is actually passing
the microbes that break down

the toxic leaves to the young.

Man, that is not
a good first meal.

So the eucalyptus leaves, it's
their source of water, as well.

And that has something
to do with their name.

Koala in indigenous
language means no drink.

It was once thought
that these koalas

would never have to come out
of their tree to drink water.

They get most of it out of
these eucalyptus leaves.

They get to sleep quite a bit.

These guys nap.

They sleep for up to
18 hours a day sometimes.

18 hours?

Yeah now there is a lot
of misconceptions as to why

these koalas sleep so much.

And it's because of
these leaves right here.

There's not much
nutrients in them.

And if we were eating
lettuce all day or something,

we'd probably sleep
for that long as well.

Miller, I came a long way
from America to Australia

to see one of these koalas.

Do you mind if I hold one?
- You can hold one.

Here we go.
Holding a koala.

Miller, were these
claws as sharp

for you as they are for me?

They were.

I forgot to warn you about them.

They're pretty sharp.

My goodness, they're
like little razors.

But I guess they need
those to climb the trees.

They do because they
don't want to fall

out of a 20 foot tall gum tree.

This coat is extremely dense.

I mean, I can't even really
see through Mango's coat.

Why is the koala equipped
with such a thick fur?

So there's three
layers of fur in there.

And it's designed to keep them
warm in winter, cool in summer,

and to keep that rain
off them as you can see.

Starting to get down, this
guy will keep it nice and dry.

So one of the reasons that we
really wanted to come out today

is that you are actually an
ambassador for the Queensland

Koala Crusaders.

So, Miller, what are
some of the initiatives

of the Koala Crusaders?

Well rescue and
rehabilitation, reforestation,

and they're actually building
a sanctuary for these koalas

so they can live
out a happy life.

You know, of
course, in America

we've heard about
the devastating fires

that have been here in Australia
over the past few months.

Can you tell us a little
bit about the state

of the koala right now?

Even before all these fires,
these koalas were in trouble.

And it's terrible to see
an Australian species

that everyone knows just get
pushed down even further.

to help this amazing species.

The Erie
islands are a unique biodiverse

ecosystem and are home to a
wide variety of animal species,

including the incredibly
rare Blanding's turtle.

So making sure that
its environment

is free of human
oriented pollution

is of utmost importance.

Today we are on
Middle Bass island,

where an isolated
population of these turtles

has been discovered
living in a small marsh.

This body of water
has recently taken

on a heavy haul of pollution
due to extreme storm surge.

Any time we go to a location
we oftentimes have trash bags

with us, primarily
to keep cameras dry

just in case it starts to rain.

But in this instance,
I'm going to take a bag.

Mario, I'm going to
hand a bag to you.

What we're going to do
now is take the next hour

to head off down into the marsh
and pick up some of the trash

that we find.

That will ensure a healthy
and happy ecosystem for all

the species that live here.

Hey Coyote, I think you can
reach this guy right here.

Plastic
floater right there.

Oh well that's glass.

Grody.

That is an old
bottle right there.

I got to be careful
with that one

so that it doesn't
break and cut my hand.

Well it's going to
add a lot of weight.

Man, that's pretty
nasty right there.

Look at this.

That is a giant
lid to something.

Definitely does not
belong in the environment.

And I'll toss this up on
the road and pick it up.

It's not going to fit in my bag.

OK we'll come back to that one.

So often it's
the little pieces

that are overlooked,
like bottle caps

and plastic caps like this.

Oftentimes these make a bigger
impact in the environment

because they're smaller, An
animal could eat this thinking

it's an insect or something.

But in this area
right here you've

got hundreds, hundreds of
pieces of these little plastics.

Now when it comes to pieces
of wood, I leave those.

Because those are actually
great platforms for

turtles to lay out on and bask.

Same with frogs, frogs
will oftentimes come out

and sit in the sun to warm up.

All right, I got a lot
of the trash back there.

How's it going so far?

So far, so good, man.

Look at this.

A whole bottle of something,
that's just water in there.

Yeah what's
your coolest find?

Fishing lures.

I'm finding that there
are a lot of fishing lures

in here, which is really bad.

The good news is
the fishing lures

strangely did not have hooks.

But fishing lures, because
they're little fish,

can oftentimes be mistaken
for food by turtles.

So I'm really glad to see
that none of them had hooks

and obviously none of them
were in the mouths of turtles.

Fishing lures are
definitely something

that I'm finding a lot of.

How's your bag doing?

It's doing good.

I'm focusing on a lot
of the smaller objects.

So it may not be as
heavy, but there is

a lot of little things in it.

There's a lot of tiny,
miscellaneous plastic pieces

that could go overlooked.

And those are quite
dangerous because animals

could potentially swallow them
if they're kind of bite-sized.

So yeah, that's what
I'm trying to focus on,

these little plastic things.

Look at that, that's just
a little cap right there.

I'm pretty maxed out, man.

Oh yeah.

That's a lot of garbage.

That's about 10 pounds
worth of trash right there.

What time is it?

Oh we are a little
bit over an hour.

Spent a little over an hour.

I think considering
my bag is pretty full

and I'm seeing a lot of duck
weed and not a lot of pollution

means I think we
can call it a day.

I think we've done our job here.

All right.

All right, good job.

Cleaning up the environment.

Human encroachment

is a major threat that animals
like the Blanding's turtles

face on a constant basis.

And while we as a species
are certainly here to stay,

there are many ways
in which we can

help keep wild places clean.

One of the simplest steps
is simply picking up litter,

whether it's in a wetland
ecosystem or your community

park every little bit counts.

All right guys, well
the Blanding turtles

environment is
officially cleaned

up to the best of our ability.

That's the largest
piece I found,

some sort of a plastic
top to a container.

And between myself and
Mario, We collected

around 25 pounds worth of
garbage out of this swamp.

Now us coming out to
collect it isn't going

to remove every single piece.

But every little bit helps.
