I
have been bitten.

I have been
stung, many, many, many times.

How much pain can one
man possibly endure?

Truth be told, quite a bit.

In fact, some of the worst
injuries I have ever sustained

actually had nothing
to do with animals,

but everything to do with
careless human error,

and the good old fashioned
idea that sometimes,

you simply find yourself in the
wrong place at the wrong time.

So to celebrate and entertain
all of you coyote pack members

that love to see me
in agony, we proudly

give you an episode
that we have titled,

"Ouch, That Must Have Hurt."

Oh, I almost forgot,
the obligatory warning.

Yeah, yeah, yeah,
there will be blood.

First up on our list
of painful "oopsies,"

is an incident that happened
before "Brave Wilderness"

was even a YouTube channel.

On March 11, 2011 at
approximately 2.46 PM,

a 9.1 magnitude earthquake took
place off the coast of Japan.

This natural disaster
caused a massive tsunami

and is considered the largest
earthquake to ever hit Japan.

At the time, we were on the
Western side of Costa Rica

filming what's known
as a sizzle reel,

with the hopes of getting
our animal adventure

series picked up as a TV show.

Yes, that is a straw cowboy hat.

Not sure why that
seemed like a good idea,

but sure is funny when
you look back at it.

Unbeknownst to us,
the quake had hit.

And as a precaution, beaches
across the Western half

of North and South America
were closed due to the chance

of massive rogue waves.

As I stood upon the
edge of a rocky outcrop,

completely clueless
to the looming danger,

this is what happened.

Whoa!

What you can't see is the nearly
20-foot drop in front of me,

which means this wave
was absolutely massive.

We estimated it to be
over 30-feet in height.

It picked me up, tumbled, and
dragged me backward over nearly

50 feet of jagged rocks.

I don't remember much.

But the damage to my body
required two trauma kits

to close the lacerations and
stop the bleeding in my arms,

legs, hips, and chest.

It's a miracle that
I wasn't killed.

Two cameras were
destroyed in the process.

And as a result of
this and my injuries,

our trip came to an abrupt halt.
Yup, that was a painful one.

To lighten the mood a bit, let's
take a look at one of my most

hilariously painful encounters.

I'm pretty sure we have
all been here before.

And next to being
eaten alive by a whale,

this was probably
the most requested

pain-zone moment the Coyote
Pack has ever requested.

I'm going for it anyways.

Why did it have to be LEGOs?

For anyone

that has ever stepped
on a LEGO, you

know it actually really hurts.

I wouldn't put it on par
with the rogue wave hit.

But boy, is it smart.

Now, help me across.

Yes.

I am the king of sting.

While we

are on the track
of painfully funny,

I bet you all remember my
valiant athleticism needed

to catch the tarantula hawk.

What happened?

Go, go, go.

And the unexpected spiny attack

that followed.

But if you missed that moment of
pain, let's take another look.

Oh!

Hold on a second.

Let me get this under control.

Oh, my god.

How are you gonna
get all this off?

Hold on.
Hold on.

Oh!

Mark, I got a multi-tool on
the side of my pouch here.

All right.

Put your camera down.

Chance, you keep filming this.

Mark, I'm gonna
need your help, man.

I can't move my arm.

Throwing your body

into the wild never ends well.

And I learned this once
again, in the summer of 2020,

while out looking
for giant catfish.

We anchored the boat.

And as I was deploying
into the murky water,

I soon found myself
in a world of pain

as I landed shin smack,
right into a rock.

Without knowing how
bad the injury was,

I went on filming for
the remainder of the day.

And when it came time to call it
a wrap and take off my wetsuit,

bam, a massive
hematoma had formed.

For all of you
non-medical experts,

a hematoma is
defined as localized

bleeding outside of the
blood vessels due to trauma.

The golf ball-sized goiter
was painful and unsightly.

I even shaved my leg
around it, because I

thought it would be funny.

The lump lasted for
about four weeks.

And eventually, my body
absorbed the blood,

and I was good as new.

There's a rock right there.

Oh, man.

That's gonna leave a mark.

That

brings us to my last blunder,
which happened while boulder

jumping in Arizona.

Let's watch and see what it
looks like when a grown man

falls off of a cliff.

OK, now, let's watch it
again in slow motion.

So here's what happened.

When I touched down, my boot
landed on a weird rocky nub.

And it slipped, causing
me to lose my balance.

The weight of my backpack
pulled me even more off balance,

and I toppled headfirst
off the cliff, lost my hat,

did a full flip, and landed
on the rocks 15 feet below.

Did you get that on camera?
Yeah.

By some miracle,

my head landed inside of
my hat, cushioning the fall

and saving my skull from getting
smashed on the jagged rocks.

It was like watching Wile
E. Coyote in real life fall

off of a cliff after
chasing the Roadrunner.

In the end, my
shoulder, neck, and back

were messed up for half a year.

But I didn't break
a single bone.

And to this day, I have
made a full recovery.

So what did we
learn today, kids?

Don't mess with water.

It's very powerful.

Don't play with cacti,
because they are very sharp.

Don't jump off of boats into
murky water, because that

is where rocks like to hide.

Always put away your LEGOs,
because they can be lethal.

And never jump on rocks,
especially with today's

technology of drones.

Because if you want to
get epic b-roll shots,

like the ones that will
close out this video,

all you need to do is fly your
camera over the landscapes.

Slithering with stealth through
the tangles of palm plants,

the Northern Water Snake
is constantly on the search

for its next meal.

If you enter the serpents lair
and attempt to capture it,

there's a good chance
you'll be bitten.

I'm losing.

I'm losing it.

Oh, that's down to my finger.

Oh, boy.

That's a big bite.

Whoa.

Now, it's under my arm.

Oh, boy.

Yeah, I am definitely bleeding.

Ouch.

Took a bite on the finger, and
a full bite all across my arm.

This is how

to clean up a water snake bite.

All right, well, the
aftermath of a water snake bite.

I got shot pretty good there.

Not exactly what
I was going for.

But when you grab
on to a water snake

to make sure you
can get the episode,

you do whatever it takes.

As we all know at this
point, the water snake

is a non-venomous species.

If that was a venomous
snake, I would be

rushing myself to the hospital.

Or rather, Mario, you
would be rushing me

to the hospital at that point.

And we'd be looking
at a completely

different type of first aid.

But what I have here,
Survival Emergency

Solutions first aid field kit.

This is pretty awesome.

Now, these guys sent me these
first aid kits, very cool kit.

It's got all the details
about what's inside of the kit

right here on the front.

And on the inside,
you can see just

how organized everything is.

It even has gloves for
infection protection.

At this point, I don't think
I'm going to get an infection

from this water snake bite.

But the first thing
I'm going to do

is actually use some saline
solution to clean it off.

Now, let me hold up my
hand here for you, Mario.

You can see on my pinky,
where the snake's entire mouth

chomped on and wrapped
around and actually ripped

some holes in the flesh there.

And I actually think--

oh, yep.

Hold on a second.

You're not going to
be able to see this.

But that right there
is a snake tooth.

Now, like sharks,
snakes are constantly

regenerating their teeth.

And water snake specifically,
have six rows of teeth, one

after another after another.

And as they lose these
teeth, they just grow

right back in and are replaced.

So I went that entire scene
with actually having a snake

tooth stuck in my finger.

Now, I was also
bitten on my arm.

And you can see the entire bite
radius of that snake's mouth

right there.

Now, at this point, it
doesn't really hurt.

And that's because
in their saliva,

they do have a little
bit of a numbing agent.

But because of the snake's
saliva being in there, and also

the fact that I was in that
gross pond water, what I'm

going to want to
do is just clean

that off with a little
bit of saline solution.

This is cool.

This is just like a little tube.

And I think you--

yep.

I just twist that off there.

And I'm going to use
a cotton gauze swab

to clean off the bite site.

Now, with those two bite sites,
what I actually want to do

is just sort of saturate
this with saline.

There we go.

That's good.

And go ahead and get a
shot of my finger there.

I sort of wipes that off.

I don't want to get any of
that pond gunk-- oh, yeah.

Look at that, all
that dirt coming

off of their, snake's saliva.

And also on my forearm there.

Wipe that off really good.

That will help just get any
of the swampy debris off

of my arm.

Looks a little cleaner, right?

OK, here we go.

Now, I also have
skin cleaning wipes.

And there's an antiseptic in
this that will help kill any

of the germs that are
nestling down into my skin

from the areas where
the teeth went in.

I have a feeling that this
might sting a little bit.

Ready?

Yep, just a touch.

But not as bad as
getting an infection.

Now, it's not actually
the snake bite

that would give me an infection,
but the dirty pond water that

got into the bites that
I have to worry about.

There we go.

Oh, yeah, that does sting a bit.

And believe it or not,
guys, that's about all you

need to do for a
non-venomous snake bite.

However if you want
to, you certainly

can put on a Band-Aid.

Now, you can also, of course,
put Neosporin on these bites

if you want.

But these bandages actually
have an anti-infection cream

right there in the padding.

So I'm just gonna cover
that up like that.

Perfect.

Now, I always carry a
first aid kit with me

out into the wilderness.

You guys don't always see it,
but it is always in my pack,

because you never
know when you're

going to need to administer
first date for yourself

or one of the crew members.

Now, when it comes to water
snakes, remember, guys,

it is a non-venomous species.

So if you come across
one in the wild

and you decide to catch it, do
be aware that it can bite you.

But if you are bitten, it's
not going to be that bad.

However, I must emphasize
that because they're so bitey,

it's always best to admire
them from a safe distance.

Yep, volcanoes and ants.

Row, cut, action.

Volcano ants?

This is breaking news.

Good evening.

And welcome to the "Brave
Wilderness" news network.

I'm your host, Coyote Peterson.

And tonight, we're talking
about the new catastrophic event

that's sweeping the nation,
a natural disaster known

as volcano ants.

So if you're ready,
here's the 10 things

you definitely need to know.

Number one, what
is a volcano ant?

The true name of this
tiny, yet potent insect

is the red imported fire ant.

I'll get to the volcano
part in a minute.

But it's important to mention
that this creature is one

of the most impactful biological
landmines you can encounter

in the entire United States.

Number two, how big are they
as compared to a bullet ant?

Tiny.

In fact, the workers measure
a mere 2.4 to 6.0 millimeters

in length, where the
bullet ant can measure

almost an inch and a half.

For comparison, that's
like a golden retriever

standing next to a triceratops.

Number three, have
they always been here,

or are they invasive?

This variety of fire
ant is technically

native to South America.

Yet it was
accidentally introduced

to a number of locations,
including Australia,

New Zealand, several
Asian countries,

and as you likely feared,
the United States.

Over the past half
century, they have

spread like wildfire
across the southeastern US

out to the Southwest.

And have even reached as far
north as Oregon and Washington.

Yikes.

Number four, do they
really erupt like a volcano

when disturbed?

Yes, they absolutely do.

The nest, or mound as
they are often referred,

is very unassuming and looks
like a cone-shaped pile

of sand.

You seldom see ants on
the outside of the mound.

But the second you disturb the
exterior, thousands of ants

come swarming out to
attack the invader,

hence the name, volcano ants.

When their mount erupts,
it's like a volcano of pain.

And whether you
disturb the mound

on accident or on purpose, it
doesn't matter to the ants.

They're going to
attack with full force.

Number five, how painful
is the sting of this ant?

Well, like all ants, they are
capable of biting and stinging.

And while the bite
doesn't have any venom,

it allows the ants to hold on
while it inflicts the stings.

On the insect sting pain index,
the fire ant only ranks as a 2.

It's got some kick.

But the pain isn't so
much from a single sting

as it is the
onslaught of stings.

Now, when I plunged my hands
into a volcano of ants,

I was stung over 300 times.

Yeah, it definitely hurts.

Number six, will volcano
ants sting humans

for absolutely no reason?

I don't say this often,
but the answer is yes.

For some reason, these ants
are exceptionally angry.

Although in fairness
to the ants,

most mass stingings
come as a result

of their homes being disturbed.

So I guess if it was your family
that was being stomped on,

you'd probably defend it too.

Number seven, what's worse,
the sting or the aftermath?

With this one, it is
definitely the aftermath.

The venom is very
potent and contains

water insoluble pepperdine
alkaloids known as solenopsin.

When the and stings
and injects venom,

your body isolates it into
pockets beneath the skin.

These pockets then
swell to the surface

and form disgusting white
pustules, which can remain

for several days, if not weeks.

Trust me.

They're incredibly unsightly.

And when I was
stung 300 times, it

looked like my hands and
arms had the worst case

of acne you have ever seen.

Number eight, do people
get stung frequently?

Unfortunately, yes.

Around 14 million people
experience the sting

of fire ants yearly,
because they are

commonly found in urban areas.

Some people have, or
develop a very bad

allergic reaction to the venom.

And to date, more than 80 deaths
have been recorded as a result

of fire ant attacks.

Number nine, should we be afraid
of volcano ants this summer?

Honestly, not necessarily.

Remember, these insects
are not out to get you.

They don't eat humans.

But their aggressive
nature makes

them very prone to attacking.

The best way to
avoid them is to stay

in tune with your environment,
watch where you're walking,

don't poke unassuming
mounds of dirt.

And if you're headed
out for a picnic,

pay attention to where
you sit your blanket down.

The last thing you want
is a swarm of volcano

ants running up your pants.

Number 10, can human pee
really cure the burning

sensation of fire ant stings?

Well, it's fair to say
that I definitely tried.

And it kind of worked.

When I dumped pee--

yes, my own pee all over
my hands, certain enzymes

in the urine, like
ammonia and potassium,

help neutralize and soothe
the stinging sensation.

In fact, it pretty much
eliminated the pain altogether.

However, the end
result did not stop me

from getting those nasty white
pustules, which like I said

earlier, were
definitely the worst

part of the entire experience.

In the end, volcano ants aren't
something you necessarily

need to be afraid of.

They're something you need to be
aware of, because these insects

have invaded the United
States, and they're

definitely here to stay.

And trust me.

The last thing you want to have
to deal with at a summer picnic

is peeing on
yourself or a friend

to stop the burning
sting of volcano ants.
