What's going on, guys?

Right now, I'm on location
in Alaska, filming

episodes of "Breaking Trail."

Now, a couple weeks ago, a bunch
of people wrote in and said,

Coyote, do you play Pokémon GO?

Your job is kind of like
the real Pokémon GO.

You run around, and
you catch animals.

And I do.

And I didn't know what
Pokémon GO was at first,

so I looked it up.

And as it turns out, it's a
very popular app at the moment.

So I downloaded it on my phone.

And while I'm here in
Alaska for two weeks,

filming, I'm going
to see how many

Pokémon I can actually catch.

You guys are going
to follow me around,

and we'll see what happens.

And according to this,
I gotta catch 'em all.

Here we go.

So we're just filming the intro.

Look at this.

There's literally one
right there in front of us.

Hold on.

I gotta get it a little closer.

I'm going to get him.

Look at that-- my first
Pokémon of the trip.

This is going to be excellent.

And this is where it all began.

Oh, wow.

This is totally cool.

I got our ferry passes.

The first day in
Alaska was beautiful.

And as we cut across
the back country,

you'd think I would be soaking
in this epic landscape.

Instead, all I could think about
was catching my next Pokémon.

Eventually, we made our
way to Mosquito Lake,

where we would be staying at
the Swan View Cabins, our base

camp for the next two weeks.

And while the goal was to
start filming "Breaking Trail"

episodes, persistent rain
made things difficult. So

I kept searching for Pokémons.

See that dog?

That's Birch.

He also plays Pokémon GO.

I'm pretty good at
catching animals,

so it only makes sense that
I would be a Pokémon natural.

Yes!

I got one.

Look, look, look.

Bulbasaur.

"Pokéman"-- got him.

Yes!

All right, going
to look for more.

Yeah.

It's just we haven't shot
any videos this week.

Coyote had this idea
like, hey, everybody wants

us to do a Pokémon GO video.

It's the new thing.

And I said, sure, let's
have a little fun.

And it's spiraled
out of control.

This guy is, like, totally
gripped by this game.

It's got its claws in him,
and he can't get away.

He's all Pokémon GO.

Oh, Mark, you've got Poké
Balls all around you right now.

Look at that.
Look at that.

Those look just like Poké Balls,
only I can't grab onto them,

it doesn't seem like.

You see what I mean?

Hmm.

Man, Coyote has been so
distracted with this Pokémon

game that he's running
around like a crazy guy,

going to different corners
of buildings and stores.

And you know, sometimes
he's right next to me

and I turn around, like,
hey, Coyote, and he's gone.

Like, we don't even
know where he's at.

Dude, no
internet connectivity.

I can't get into the Pokémon
app here, and we're in town.

Well, look at
those peaks, man.

Look how beautiful that is.

Just enjoy the scenery
and the beauty of this.

We're in Alaska.

Yeah, but we come
into town once a day.

This is the only place
I can actually catch

Pokémon is right here in town.

Without service, how am
I going to catch any?

I'm just hoping, deep down,
that this is part of Coyote

and how he does things.

And anything he does,
he takes on fully.

He's definitely method

we're going to need

Coyote to snap out of this.

Because what's happening right
now, we don't have any videos.

So we
were halfway into the trip,

and so far, we only
had, like, one episode--

salmon or something.

I mean, maybe I should
have been concerned,

but I was catching Pokémons, and
that's what I came here to do.

I'd already caught,
like, five of them--

not bad in a week, considering
the lack of phone service.

I don't know what Mark's
all bent out of shape about.

He said, catch things.

What's it look like I'm doing?

This job isn't easy, you know.

Anyone out there who's
catching Pokés, it's intense.

The minute your phone buzzes and
a Poké's nearby, it's game on.

I'd like to see Mark try
to catch a Bulbasaur.

I think I got a problem, man.

Mark's been pretty
bummed out that I've

been playing this whole time.

We're not getting the shots.

Oh, but there's
one close, there.

Hold on-- just one more.

Austin,

about this whole Pokémon thing?

Dude, Pokémon GO is so sick.

So can you catch
Pikachu on this?

Oh, yeah.

Pikachu's, like, one
of the hardest ones

to ever come across.

I definitely don't

I only have six at this point.

No, I'm just checking
the area for Pokémon gyms.

But look at this.

We're in the middle of
the Alaskan wilderness--

absolutely nothing out here.

Yeah, but Mark said
you shouldn't be playing this.

It's distracting you.

Well--

You don't
think this is a problem?

I don't know.

I mean, it is a
little bit, but it's,

like, not that big of a deal.

Because it's pretty sweet, dude.

We get exercise.

We get to run around.

We're in the woods,
throwing little balls,

trying to catch those
little critters.

There's plenty of time
in the day for this.

We got lots of
minutes, lots of hours.

My man's gonna get that
Pikachu, I know it.

Mad respect.

Got the grahams, the chocolate.

Got a few extra mallows there.

Gonna do some s'mores.

So I caught my
third Pidgey today.

It's kind of like a mix between
a cardinal and a goldfinch.

And it says that
Pidgey has an extremely

sharp sense of direction.

I feel like I've got a
good sense of direction.

Wait, is that that
Pokémon GO game again?

Yeah, I'm just checking
in on my Pokédex.

I thought we
talked about this.

You've gotta focus.

We're supposed to be out
here making quality content.

I know.

This is, like, in-between time.

I can't wait to evolve this one.

It's going to be so cool
when it's fully grown.

What do you mean fully grown?

I gotta evolve it.

You put a little bit of time and
effort into taking care of him,

like--

At what point is this going
to, like, wear off, this fad?

It's not, man.

This is the coolest game
that's out there right now.

Trust me.

This game is awesome--

just like catching real animals.

You know, we came
on this trip to Alaska

because his lifelong goal was
to work with the wolverine.

And it's like he
doesn't even care.

He's out there
playing Pokémon GO.

And now it seems like his only
goal is catching a Pikachu.

Honestly, I don't
think there's going

to be another video of "Breaking
Trail" if he doesn't catch one.

So part of me is saying
I hope he does it.

Yeah, it's pretty distracting.

I mean, we've got a
set segment to film.

Ah!

There's no signal!

I'm trying to go over
some animal facts with him

to get in the flow of things.

And--

What's wrong with this boat?

It doesn't have any Wi-Fi!

All he's talking about
is Pikachu and Bulbasaur.

And I don't know.

I don't have Pokémon GO.

I mean, usually, Coyote
is always on point.

He's the one thing
on our shoots that I

don't have to worry about.

Coyote has enough drive
to make any video work.

But lately, we haven't
been getting anything done.

I mean, I'm here to do a job.

I'm laser beam.

I'm boom.

I'm in there, trying to get
the videos for you guys.

And now we've got Coyote
running around, catching

Pokémon GO all the time.

And I was hoping
maybe in Alaska,

there'd be no cell
phone service, and maybe

there wouldn't be any Pokémons.

They're everywhere,
all over the place.

And so is Coyote.

In fact, I have no idea
where he is right now.

Dude, let's go find Coyote.

Haven't seen him in a while.

Really rockin'.

My battery died on my phone.

Good.

It's done.

I can't even use it.

Can't get on the "Pokéman" app.

I think this is a
good thing for you.

Ultimately, you're going to look
back on this, and this is good.

Dude, dude, they can't evolve
if I can't get into my phone.

I can't evolve the Pokémons
if I can't get into the phone.

We're on a boat in
the middle of the ocean.

And there's no
electricity, none!

I
had gone over the edge.

Pokémon GO consumed me.

this juncture, I

think it's fair to say
that I may have developed

a little bit of a problem.

I know everybody wanted me
to make a Pokémon GO video,

but we've gone two
weeks now in Alaska.

Unfortunately, I don't think
we got any episodes other than

some of this Pokémon content.

And everybody's going
to be really bummed.

I mean, I didn't
catch, or even see,

a single wild animal
while I was out there.

And I did catch a
bunch of Pokémon GOs.

But those don't turn into
episodes of "Breaking Trail."

So I guess until we hit the next
location, I'm Coyote Peterson.

Oh, look at that--

level 4!

That was the
biggest spiny lizard

we have seen this entire
trip, one of the biggest I've

seen in my life.

It is huge.

This is going to
be a tough catch.

Ah!

What's going on, Coyote Pack?

We are back in the
Sonoran Desert.

And as you can see,
it is nighttime,

which means it's
the perfect time

to search for desert creatures.

Now, I do have my trusty
flashlight with me and my snake

tongs and, of course, Mark right
there behind the main camera.

What's going on, guys?

We've got Mario
on the B camera.

There he is.

And if you guys are ready,
we know what happens next.

We head off into the darkness
and see what we can find.

Let's go.

All right, Coyote.

So what are we looking for?

Where are we starting tonight?

Well, what's interesting and
that people don't realize--

whoa, I just heard something.

Hold on a second.

What was that?

Oh, what is that?

What is it?

I thought it
was a rattlesnake.

It just went tss, tss, tss.

I think it was a bug, though.

What I like about this area is
you have a lot of plant life,

but there's also all this area
to walk in between things.

You'll notice there
aren't many cacti around.

Which is nice.

It's really nice.

So we're not
walking into things.

Look at this.

It looks like we're on
a trail, but we're not.

The entire desert in
this area, no matter

what direction you place your
lights, you can go this way,

you can go this way,
you can go that way.

And it's actually almost
disorienting because it's

very easy to get lost.

Now, we do have a GPS
tracking system with us.

We've made a pin way back
at our vehicle, which

we started off at at daytime.

Hopefully, we'll
make it back there.

But I think we go this direction
and see what we can find.

Oh, look at this.

It's a fallen cactus.

Whoa.

That's huge.

Wow, that's a fallen
giant right there.

Saguaro.

Whoa.

It's still alive a
little bit, it looks like.

I'll bet this came
down in a recent monsoon.

I've never even seen--

oh, yeah, look at this.

This is definitely
recently felled.

Wow.

Look at the inside here.

Look at that.

It's like wood.

Too bad.

That's an old cactus.

Yeah, that's an old legend
that fell, right there.

Wow.

Definitely probably came down
in some heavy monsoon winds.

Yeah, we can get
up and over this.

OK.

You want to hand
me your camera?

Sure.

OK.

Got it?

Yep.

Woo.

Standing on top of
an ancient cacti.

That's a new one.

Watch the spikes
on the edge there.

Yeah, I see them.

I'm gonna jump right off here.

OK.

Snake, snake, snake.

OK.
Nice grab.

I got it.
I got it.

I got it.

Took me a second to
properly identify it,

and that's going
to be the key piece

to talking about this
species specifically.

So we walked up.

We set the lights.

And you'll notice
the red and the black

and the slight
yellowish coloration.

This could have been a
coral snake, but it is not.

This is a long-nosed snake.

Wow, look how beautiful it is.

Now, that bright
coloration is aposematic,

which means it's a warning
to any potential predator

that I may be venomous.

However, in this instance,
it's a snake that

is completely safe to handle.

Now, these snakes are
strictly nocturnal.

It's the only time you
will come across them.

And during the day, they're
actually hiding underground,

which means they are fossorial.

But at night, they
are out searching

for any sort of little
creature that they

can get their mouths on.

It could be a gecko.

It could be a little roach
running around in the desert.

This is an
opportunistic predator.

All right, I'm going to set
it back down into the sand.

It's going to take
off into the desert.

Later, buddy.

So how do you spot
these lizards, Coyote?

It's a matter of looking
for some sort of obscure shape

out on one of the limbs
of these creosote bushes

or some of these other trees.

They're actually
really hard to spot.

Wow.

Mark, you rolling?

Yes, I am.

That is
the biggest spiny

lizard we have seen this entire
trip, one of the biggest I've

seen in my life.

It is huge.
Wow.

That is maximum size.

That is a male.

You can see the dark bluish
coloration on its back.

This is going to
be a tough catch.

It's a fortress around it.

Wow.

You see you've got all these
prickly pears right in front.

I don't know how I'm going
to catch this lizard.

There's a giant choya
tree right next to it, too.

Coyote, where you at?

Right here.

Choya right here.

Got it.

Ah.

Nice grab.

Got it.
Woo!

Woo!

That's the one.

Wow.

Nothing like getting on your
back in a bunch of-- ah--

spikes and thorns.

Oh!

Ah.

I got spikes all
into my shoulder.

But--

It was worth it.

There it is.

That is a gorgeous male
desert spiny lizard.

Wow.

That is a beaster right there,
a perfect field guide specimen.

Oh, trying to bite me.

Ouch-- and spiked me.

And let's talk about why they
call this the desert spiny

lizard.

Look at that beast.

Wow.

This is one of the
larger specimens

that I have ever seen.

And look at all the spikes
on the back of that reptile.

Now, the way we know this is
a male, aside from its size,

is look--

oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, we just want
to show everybody your belly.

Ow, so spiky.

Look at the belly
of that lizard.

Wow.

And there's a little bit of
yellowing speckled in there.

Oh, you are so
handsome, so handsome,

and incredibly strong.

Now, this is one of the most
robust lizard species out here

in the Sonoran Desert and
one of the fastest lizard

species you can come across.

They're almost
impossible to catch

during the daylight hours.

It's even been tough
to catch them at night.

But as you can see, we
finally managed to get

one in front of the cameras.

Woo!

We have been out here for--

gosh, it's going on three
hours at this point,

trying to catch this lizard.

But we have finally got one.

Now, let's talk about why they
call this the desert spiny

lizard.

This is probably easier
to feel than it is to see,

but there are sharp scales
running all along the length

of this reptile's body.

And if I run my finger
backwards, like this--

ah.

Mark, put your finger out there.

Tell everybody what
that feels like.

Just kind of run your
finger gently backwards.

Yeah, it's
like a cheese grater.

Right?

Oh, yeah, that
would shred you.

Now, imagine being something
trying to eat this lizard--

let's say a snake.

Tries to swallow
this, it's going

to get stuck in its throat.

So the only real predator
for this creature out

here is a bird, something
like a roadrunner or a hawk.

Snakes usually tend to avoid
the desert spiny lizard.

Oh, and this is absolutely
one of my favorites.

And as a kid, I would
always try to catch these,

but they were incredibly
difficult to ever get close to.

Now, you'll notice
this sort of dark patch

on the lizard's back.

Can you see it's shedding
some of his scales there?

That dark patch
actually becomes much

more vibrant during the day.

And what they will do is
wake up early in the morning

and lay out in the sun to
bask in the warm, glowing sun.

As they warm up, they get
ready to head out and hunt.

This is a diurnal
species, which means

it's active during the day.

And as that sunlight
warms them up,

they actually get
brighter in coloration.

But you can see, even here,
at night, under these lights,

the belly is
absolutely beautiful.

And you'll notice that
bright blue coloration.

You see the chin here?

It's not as bright right now,
but during breeding season,

these lizards are
absolutely gorgeous.

And the males, what they will
do is they'll go up on a rock,

puff up their chest,
and say to all

the ladies with that bright
coloration, aren't I handsome?

Don't you want to date me?

And I'll tell you what, buddy,
you are about as handsome

as it gets for a
desert spiny lizard.

Wow, these guys
are just so cool.

Now, they are
voracious predators,

and they have a
pretty powerful bite.

Let's see.

You want to show us
how tough your bite is?

No.

I really want to
show you guys-- ah!

Wow, that's powerful
right there.

Wasn't expecting to do that.

But as he showed me the teeth,
yeah, they can latch on.

And that's about as
powerful as the knight

anole and kind of getting
close to the collared lizard.

Can I have my finger back?

Please?

Ooh, yeah, those little
teeth-- ow, ow, ow.

I'm going to turn my
finger like that, Mario,

so you can get a tight shot.

Can it break
skin, you think?

Probably not, but the
pressure is noticeable.

And I'll tell you what.

For any little insect or
arachnid running around

out here in the
nighttime desert,

those jaws would
be the end of you.

All right, can I have
my finger back, please?

Ah, oh.

Oh, I saw the
saliva coming off of that.

Oy.

That was a powerful
little bite right there.

Do you ever
worry about getting

bit by all these reptiles?

No, not so much.

I knew that this one
wasn't going to break skin

but gave me a
solid little pinch.

Well, it took us
quite a bit of time,

but we finally
managed to catch one

handsome desert spiny lizard.
