I got Mario back there, and
I think it's a perfect time

to get an ice cream.

But I have a plan for
this ice cream cone.

So we're going to go through the
drive-thru at McDonald's right

now.

I don't oftentimes eat
McDonald's unless it's for ice

cream, so we're going
to love it today and do

something extra special
with this ice cream cone,

but this little girl
is just so cute.

a goat at the same time.

Watch my fingers.

I could have
sworn this goat would

have loved that ice cream cone.

going to be a surefire thing.

But as we know,
goats are herbivores.

And this salad is exactly what
Little G was in the mood for.

learned today, is

that baby goats
don't necessarily

This is Kate Bimrose.

And today we're going to be
exploring the Bolinas lagoon.

A unique ecosystem that's
part of the Greater Farallones

National Marine Sanctuary.

As the sun
breaks through the morning

clouds, we slowly cross
the harbor and land

on the shore of Kent Island.

Welcome to the Bolinas Lagoon.

An internationally
recognized wetlands

that is perfectly
tucked into the hills

of West Marin California.

This 1,000 acre tidal estuary
is a protected refuge and home

to a variety of animal species.

Today I will be heading off
trail with lagoon restoration

coordinator, Kate Bimrose.

Her field of expertise is
environmental management,

and for the past 5 years, she's
been working with the greater

Farallon's association.

A non-profit, whose
goal is to protect

the lagoon's native
plant and animal species.

My goal is to see what kind of
animals inhabit this island,

and we didn't have to
travel far before we

came across our first creature.

Look what we got.

Oh, right there.

Look at that.

Oh you know what that is.

That is a black widow.

This is not a spider you want to
get bitten by, that's for sure.

It's a big female right there.

Got her.

Wow.

Oh.

That's about
as close as you would ever want

to get to a black widow spider.

One of the most
venomous spider species

here in the United States.

So you guys are out
here all the time

then picking plants,
flipping logs,

and building piles of stuff.

You know what you're also doing?

Creating a perfect habitat
for the black widow.

Absolutely, I
didn't realize that.

That is one of
the biggest female black widows

I think I've ever seen.
Look at the size of her abdomen.

I'm assuming you've never been
bitten by one of these, right?

I've never
been bitten by one.

I've never even seen one
on the island, actually.

So this is a first for me.

So
this is a new find.

All right, we're
breaking ground here.

Absolutely.

This spider
has no interest in biting you.

The only reason it would bite is
to protect itself from getting

squished and killed.

I love getting to explore
uninhabited expanses

of wilderness.

And as we moved
across the island,

we soon came upon signs of
one elusive little mammal.

So, one of the little rodents
we have out here on Kent island

is the salt marsh
harvest mouse, which

is actually endemic to the
San Francisco Bay Area.

They're so tiny though.

What they do is they kind
of grab one of these stocks,

they pull it down, and then
they kind of bite it off

and they eat the seeds inside.

So they end up leaving these
little piles of matchsticks

around.

You can see where they've sort
of been eating and getting

their meals before they
bury down into their tunnels

and move to the next spot.

All right, well we'll
keep our eyes peeled

and maybe we'll see one
of these cute little mice.

Let's keep moving.

See what else we can find.

All right.

As we pressed
to the north end of the island,

we eventually came upon a place
where the land meets the sea.

And there hunting
along the shoreline,

we were witness to
hundreds of birds.

The Bolinas Lagoon is famous
for being a stopover point

on the Pacific
flyway, which makes

it a perfect spot
for birders hoping

to observe migrating species.

From galls and turns,
to egrets, cormorants,

pelicans, herons, and one
really cool looking sandpiper.

We saw more birds
that we could ever

present in a single episode.

Moving back inland, we suddenly
came across Kate's arch enemy.

And the most notorious
invader of Kent Island.

What are we looking at here?

We're actually
looking at ice plant

right here, which is
originally from South Africa.

So this is an
invasive species right here?

Yes exactly.

That's
too bad because they're

so cool looking.

And I assume this is some
sort of a succulent, right?

Yeah, exactly.

And when you open
it up here, you

can kind of take a look inside
and it's sort of crystallised.

It's almost looks like ice.

Oh
wow, it really does.

Yeah.

Actually one of the ways that
we are getting rid of this plant

is by pumping saltwater
onto the island.

Because these are
salt intolerant,

so when they soak up
all of that salt water,

they start to dry out, and the
nutrients run out of the plant.

And they go from
this healthy green

to a more unhealthy
red or yellow color.

And then they're easier to
pull up out of the ground.

Kate
spends the majority

of her days protecting Kent
Island against the ever

invasive ice plant.

And while we could have
battled these invaders forever,

it was time to continue our
search for animal inhabitants.

Where I finally found,
and managed to capture,

one of the island's most elusive
rodents, the California vole.

Oh, hold on.

I gotta get him by the
scruff of his neck.

Gotta be as gentle as possible.

All right look at those
little teeth there.

Do not want to get
nipped by those.

And they're out here eating
all the little seeds here

on the island, and it's great
because these guys are actually

helping the ecosystem
by distributing

seeds of native species, right?

Absolutely.

And then they're also a
great food source for a lot

of the bird species out here.

Wow this was so
tough to catch.

I've seen about 4 of them today.

Haven't been able to get close,
and I don't want to get bitten

by him, he's got some pretty
sharp little teeth up front

there.

I've got a gentle hold
on the back of his neck,

just by the scruff, which is
not causing him any Injury Just

going to enjoy his
company for a minute

here, and then let him
back off into the wild.

Look at his pudgy
little belly there.

You see they've got a
real short little tail,

got these nice
springy back feet,

and they are incredibly quick.

And they have burrow systems
all over the island, don't they?

Absolutely.

Every board or log

that we have flipped up
looking for creatures

has had a burrow underneath it.

And like Coyote said, they
have a whole system of tunnels.

So as soon as they see
some sort of a predator

they are out of
there in a flash.

All right, we're

going to let this little guy
go back off into the wild.

So you can continue distributing
seeds here in the lagoon.

There's an old saying that
things go bump in the night.

And if you were out exploring
the darkness of Costa Rica's

most diverse region,
the Osa Peninsula,

those things that
go bump also stock

stealthily in the shadows.

Just before they charge,
pounce, and attack.

Woah.

That's a wild ocelot.

It's just right here my feet.

Look at that.

How cool Is that?

Fortunately
for me, in the encounter

you are about to witness,
I was about to become

a playmate, and not an item on
the rainforest nightly menu.

OK, so let me tell you
what we have going on here.

This is really unique.

We're out night herping, looking
for reptiles and amphibians,

walking down the
trail, I literally stop

and I'm shining my light
on this giant wolf spider.

Biggest wolf spider
I've ever seen.

And out of the darkness I
hear

and, boom!

An ocelot just
zooms right past me.

Let me see if I get her back.

She likes my snake stick.

Wait for this.

There she is.

See that?

She's gonna come right up here.

Ow.
Ow!

She's attacking my arm.

Where are you?

Come here.

There she is.

Look what I got my hands.

Look at that ocelot!

Hey, buddy.

Wow!

And she is a lot heavier
than you would think.

OK, can you stay
here for the scene?

We can play the snake stick.

She's gonna be all over the
place while we're filming.

This is a wild cat.

However, she is used to humans.

She hangs out on this trail.

We were told, if you
walk this trail at night

there's a good chance that
you will come across her.

Let's see, what else do I maybe
have for you to play with?

Let's see we got in the pack.

I'm sure there's
something in here

that a little ocelot would love.
Oh, yeah.

There we go.

Took the pack off
and she's on my back.

Maybe just the pack itself.

Look at that.

Wanna wrestle the pack?

Wrestle the pack.

Look at that coloration.

Now this cat blends so
perfectly into its environment.

All this cryptic
patterning allows

him to stay hidden
in the shadows

as they're moving through
all of this foliage.

Come here.

You come here for a second.

I'm just going to
hold onto you,

and take
the risk of a bite or scratch.

A paw to the face.

A paw to the face.

How about a little belly rub?

Yeah.

I hear you talking.

You got that pack?

Can you see your face?

Oh look at that.

Now this is just
like a big housecat.

She's only about half grown
right now, but look at--

she weighs about 25 pounds.

Oh I see you.

Oh, yeah.

OK.
Oh.

Ah.

Yeah.

Oh, she's biting my ear.

Oh, she's bit-- Ow!

Was that a kiss or a bite?

Oh, you're so cute.

You're so cute.

You are.

Don't go for my jugular though.

These cats are lethal
once fully grown,

and they can take down pretty
much anything that's out here

in the Costa Rican rainforest.

All they have to
do is run, leap,

sink in those front claws, and
then a bite to the jugular.

And she's got a meal.
- Oh.

That was crazy.

Kissed by an Ocelot
Where'd you go?

There she is.

And a pounce.

Oh.

Woah, Mario.

Uh-oh.

Got the camera man.

Now she
has found the microphone.

No, no.

I think we
need a new mic.

We just need
one for ocelots to play with.

I knew it was
a matter of time.

I was expecting
creepy crawlies.

Not something as
cute as an ocelot.

You've got to get that
landing down, you know that?

That's what she does.

She's been leaping-- come
here-- from log to log,

and she literally
launches over the log.

Oh, woah.

Let go, she says.

So Coyote, is this rare?

This is probably the
most unique thing I

have ever done with an animal.

Yeah, she's got
a hold on me now.

There, see, that's
what she would want.

She's going for the jugular.

And hopefully she just
doesn't bite me hard.

OK.

All right, I'm keeping
my eyes closed so I don't

take a claw in the eyeball.

That would be bad.

So just so
everybody knows,

this is not a captive animal.

No.

This is a wild ocelot.

100% wild right now.

I would never recommend
you go on the wild

and ever try to get
this close to an ocelot,

because if it
didn't want to play,

it could really do
some serious damage.

And she is just,
loving me right now.

You are just the most adorable
thing I think I've ever met.

Your hat's all messed up.

Well,
yeah, probably did

a number on my hat, didn't you?

Let's see--
Is this a kitten?

This is a kitten.

She's probably only
a few months old,

and you can see those paws.

Come here, let's take
a look at your paws.

You see those paws right there?

I see you trying to whack me
in the face with those paws.

Those paws are how
they climb so well

through this
rainforest ecosystem.

Is she behind me right now?

Yeah, you're probably
going to get pounced.

I feel like when

I make these sort of movements,
that's when she pounces.

And that's what they
do, they creep up

really slowly staying hidden.

And then they see sudden
movement like this,

and they do that.

A paw in the mouth.

They go right for the neck,
or the head in this case.

Ah, gees.

I just got bit in the eye.

And then they have their dinner.

Ouch.

Oh.

Oh, she's licking my ear.

That feels weird.

I've never had my ear licked
before about an ocelot.

First time for everything.

Ah!

Yeah, oh that's good.

She's training right there.

She's going for the
back of my neck.

Hopefully she's not going
to inflict that death wound.

Ow, ow, ow, ow.

Ah!

Yeah, OK.

I guess you're there?
Ow!

I see you.

You're so playful.

Now if I was one
of her littermates,

this is exactly how
she's be playing.

You know, those claws are sharp.

The teeth are sharp.

I'm getting slight little itty
bitty punctures here and there,

but nothing that I can't take.

Not to be this close to such
a cool rainforest creature.

living underneath this crate

is one of the most
vicious creatures

in the animal kingdom.

And I'm going to let it out.

Are you ready?

Come over here.

The wilds of Alaska

are home to one of the
most ferocious mammals

on the planet.

A fearless predator armed with
a bone crushing bite force,

lightning speed, and the ability
to take down prey several times

its own size.

I know what you were thinking,
it must be a grizzly bear.

Or maybe a wolverine?

But what if I told you the
maximum size of this animal

is only 15 inches long?

Making it one of
the smallest members

of its family, the mustelids.

Today we are in Haines, Alaska,
at Steve Kroschel's Wildlife

Sanctuary, where we
will be getting up close

with one of these little mammals
who's been raised in captivity.

This stealthy hunter's related
to badgers, pine martens, mink,

and even wolverines.

Have you guessed who
we are talking about?

If not, get ready to meet
the short tailed weasel.

Very slowly.

Hold on, let me
lift off this rock.

Got to keep it in
there with a rock,

that's how strong they are.

You nervous doing that?

Yeah.

It's gonna lunge out of
the straw and maul me.

I see it.

It's over there in the corner.

By the white thing.

There you are, come over here.

Oh, you hear that chirp?

OK.

Let me get it out.

And maybe we just sit
back for a second.

One thing you don't
do is try to force

a member of the weasel
family to do something

that it doesn't want to do.

Wait a minute, I hear
some rustling in there.

Here we go.

Here we go.

About to spring out.

There it is.

Look at that.

It's a weasel!

Now don't like this
cuteness fool you,

this is one voracious predator.

I'm trying to stay
still right now.

I don't want to just twitch my
fingers around because if I do,

it may think that that's
something to latch onto.

This little tiny animal
that's jumping around in here,

has a bite strength that is
150 pounds per square inch.

To give you some perspective,
a human's bite force

is only 85 pounds.

And I think it's
underneath me right now.

OK, you getting a little
more comfortable with me?

It's behind me.

A little nervous.

Tiny little sharp teeth.

You'll notice that
the tip of the tail

is dark and coloration,
almost black.

And the tip it'll stay
that color all year long,

even when the coat is white.

You're so cute.

You would fit
perfectly in my pocket.

You know where that
weasel would go best?

Right-- ow, he's
scratching my back.

In an instance like this,
it is all about just letting

the animal acclimate to me.

I don't want to try
to force an encounter.

If I were to grab
that weasel right now

it would reach
around and bite me

with those sharp little
needle like teeth.

I want-- it's right
behind you, Mark.

Don't move, don't move.

Just let it come back this way.

I'm just keeping my
hand low to the ground.

It's underneath you.

It's totally cool.
Don't worry about it.

Oh, there.

Right there, right there, OK.

This little creature is like
the hummingbird of mammals.

It's heart is going
it 800 beats a minute.

At a resting pace
300 beats a minute.

That is crazy.

So this little thing
is running around,

it's heart's going
...

Imagine that.

800 beats in a single minute.

In the wild these weasels
are incredible predators,

and what they will
do is they will find

the burrow of a mouse or vole.

It will go in there.

It will find whether it's
an adult or its babies,

and it will just eat everything
that it comes across.

Then it will take
over the burrow

and turn that into their home.

I'm going to be
honest with you,

I don't think there's
any chance of me actually

holding on to this
weasel and keeping

it still for the cameras.

I do want to get you guys really
cute shots of this animal,

it's absolutely adorable.

So I brought with me
a GoPro on a gimble.

And I think, if I follow
the weasel around,

and get you got
some great shots.

I just want it to come
up on these rocks here.

It's almost like I
can't move the camera

fast enough to get it in frame.
