I'm Coyote Peterson.

I want to show you something cool,

but it's going to be one pinchy situation.

Here we go.

1, 2, 3--

The Pacific Coast is an expanse of beauty,

and if you head down to the shores of Half

Moon Bay at low tide, there's a world of biodiversity

that you may encounter.

All right, so here's something pretty interesting.

As we're waiting for the water to recede

back and the tide pools to become exposed,

this is what's left behind.

This giant mass of nastiness, this is kelp.

And you aren't here with me right now,

but I promise you this stuff absolutely stinks.

Ooh.

Looks like the tide's going out.

Looks like the tide is coming back in.

So now you can eat kelp, some people do, but if you were here

and you stuck your face in this and you could smell it,

it's like a rotten fish market.

Certainly not something that I want in my salad.

All right, let's head up this way

and see if we can find some cool creatures.

From sea anemones--

That feels so cool.

All those little tentacles are so sticky.

- to prickleback fish,

the tide pools are alive with friendly animals.

Though, some of the local inhabitants

aren't quite as well-mannered as, let's say, a sea star.

And if you flip over some rocks, watch

your fingers because you might get

more than you bargained for.

Down here nestled in these rocks is a purple shore crab.

I'm going to gently move some of these rocks

back and try to get a hold of him.

He's pretty good sized, and one thing about these crabs

is that they are very difficult to handle.

And there's probably a pretty good chance

that I'm going to get pinched.

I got him.

Look at that.

There it is.

That is the purple shore crab.

Now you notice how that crab is blowing bubbles?

He's not doing that to be funny.

He's actually doing it to aerate his gills.

And if he didn't know that crabs have gills, they do.

All these little bubbles, because he's

out of the water right now, as they pop

push oxygen back in through his skills.

Now the reason that they're called

the purple shore crab, as you can see,

he's very purple in coloration.

The carapace, which is the top of the crab, is purple,

and then the claws up front here have very distinct light violet

color with darker purple spots.

And these little crabs are a very important part

of the ecosystem because they become

food for a lot of the other animals

out here, primarily birds.

So at low tide like this when the water has receded back,

the birds will flock in and look for these crabs

stranded in shallow pools.

Now fortunately for these little crabs,

they're able to climb under rocks and hide.

But if you're human and you come out here to the tide pools,

all you need to do is flip over a couple of rocks

and you're going to find tons of these little crabs.

Now one way to not get pinched by these crabs

is to just gently let them rest on the palm of your hand.

You want to move one hand to the next,

so that you don't apply any pressure and that way

you avoid getting pinched.

Now you're looking at this little crab

and you're probably thinking to yourself, man,

that looks like one voracious little predator.

But they're mostly vegetarians out here feeding on sea lettuce

and occasionally, they'll scavenge on a dead carcass

of some sorts.

Now these front pincers are actually used as defense.

And I'm sure you're thinking to yourselves, Coyote, you going

to get pinched by that crab?

Why not?

Let's see how powerful it really is.

All right, here we go.

You ready?

1, 2, 3--

Oh, my goodness.

That is a serious pinch right there.

Oh, he's going to get me with that claw, too.

Wow, look at that.

I can only imagine what it would be like-- ah--

to get pinched by a crab bigger than this.

Now this is one of the smaller species of shore crabs

that we have out here, but if you were ever

to go out into the tide pools and try

to catch one of these crabs and you are pinched like this,

don't panic.

Try to tough through the pain, and gently set

it back down into the water.

Watch this, as soon as he's down there,

he will let go of my finger.

Just like that, as soon as he felt that he was back

in his environment and he was comfortable,

he let go and went about his way.

Pretty cool getting up-close with the purple sure crab.

Let's head down the beach and see what else we can find.

Ahhh!

What's going on, guys?

Well, it is another day off for the Brave Wilderness team

and instead of lounging around, what we're

going to do is take these sea kayaks out into the waterways

around the San Juan Islands.

We're going to be exploring and see what we can come across.

And if we're lucky--

fingers crossed-- maybe we'll see some marine mammals.

Approaching quietly in a sea kayak

is a great way to observe wildlife.

So as long as we kept a respectful distance,

there was a good chance we would have luck seeing some animals.

Check this out, guys.

I just found-- if I can get it up here--

well, if Mario keeps balance-- you

can turn it towards the right.

Look at this.

Look at that. Ow!

He's pinching me.

Woo, that's a big kelp crab right there.

Look at that guy.

Wow.

There's all these kelp beds and look at those pincers.

That's awesome.

It's covered with seaweed on its back.

It's got algae growing on it.

That is a kelp crab right there, and it's just

sitting there pulling apart little piece of the kelp

and then forcing them into its mouth.

Look at that.

Woo, those pincers mean business.

That's actually the largest kelp crab I've seen since we've

been here in Washington.

Now they get significantly bigger than this.

Look, the plastron underneath there,

you see how thin that is?

That means that this is a male and not a female.

Females have a much more rounded plastron

and the males are far pointier.

Ooh, that guy's cool looking though.

Trying not to get pinched by it.

We've got pretty good reach-- ooh, almost got me there.

All right, I'm going to set this kelp crab back down here

into the kelp, and we're going to keep

searching for other bizarre marine creatures.

All right, see you later, buddy.

After I released the crab back

into the kelp, we quietly drifted closer

to South Peapod Island, which is hailed as one

very popular bird hangout.

All right, guys.

So just behind us on the rocks right here,

we have a pair of pigeon guillemots.

It's a little marine bird and they're very distinct.

They have the same color structure as an orca,

they're black and white, but they have these really distinct

light kind of pinkish red feet.

Now Mario is trying to get a really zoomed-in shot,

we're being really quiet, just trying to not paddle at all.

We've drifted right up to the edge of the rocks like this.

They're just kind of looking down at us saying,

hmm, look at that kayak.

This massive rock

was also the perfect hangout for western gulls,

one of the most plentiful birds on and around the islands.

With a wingspan of nearly five feet, they're rather sizable.

And as we drifted closer, they all looked

down at us with curious eyes.

Believe it or not, a flock of seagulls

is rather intimidating.

So after a few admiring moments, we paddled

on toward North Peapod Island.

We're still about 800 yards out

and I can hear from here that there

are a whole bunch of harbor seals hauled out on the shore.

So what we want to do is approach

very slowly, very cautiously.

We don't want to get any closer than about 200 yards

from the island, and we'll see if there's

any out in the water that actually get curious

and come up near the kayaks.

Look at that, there's a harbor seal right there.

Right off the side of the kayak.

Hi, buddy!

Harbor seals hail

as being the most widely-spread pinnipeds, or true seals,

in the world, and can measure up to six feet in length

while weighing nearly 300 pounds.

Staying a respectful distance from the island

kept the animals at ease.

However, as a human you can't help but feel

a little hesitant as they surrounded

us from nearly every angle.

The good news is that harbor seals are seldom aggressive,

and oftentimes are simply curious,

like little water puppy dogs that just pop their heads

out of the water to say, hello.

Filming seals from a distance was rather difficult,

so we decided to turn our attention

to another marine creature that was

also incredibly plentiful in these offshore waters.

Surrounded by jellyfish right now.

Here comes one.

Where?

Oh, it's too deep.

Too deep for what?

I'm going to try to catch one.

You're going to catch a jellyfish?

I'm going to catch a jellyfish.

That's a moon jelly, should I pick it up?

You're going to pick up that jellyfish?

Yeah, well, not by the underside,

I'm going to scoop it from the top

so that the tentacles don't get me.

Ready? MARK: Is that possible?

I think so. MARK: OK.

We're going to see what happens.

Ready? MARK: Yep.

MARK Are you sure about this?

Ah!

Did he get ya?

Just kidding, guys.

That's a moon jellyfish.

And while they're capable of stinging very small prey,

the sting has absolutely no effects on a human.

But it's very slimy.

You tricked us. - I did trick you.

In fact, I'm so confident it won't sting, Mark, go ahead,

put your hand out there. MARK: Eh--

Right into the pneumatic force,

which are right in the center.

Slimy, but not stingy.

Nothing.

Nothing at all, right?

See, watch.

I'll even place it right down on my forearm and upright

like that. Nothing at all.

You see that?

That's what I love about moon jellies.

See, they have those little crescent-shaped circles

right there underneath the top of their body structure.

Very cool looking.

All right, little guy.

I'm going to get you back into the water here.

It's important that we keep the jellyfish hydrated.

So you see these washed up on the beaches a lot.

Yeah, they do wash up on the beach

and unfortunately, the ones that are washed up on the beach

usually end up drying up in the sun and dying.

But they're all over the place out here today

and you look at this one, you think, oh, it's

just a little tiny jellyfish.

You guys want to see a big jellyfish?

There's been-- yeah, we have seen some bigger ones.

Where are they?

I got a bigger one right here--

Oh, you had one all along?

When we were-- no, when we were in-between takes there,

there was one float right next to my kayak on this side.

I lifted it up and got it into the boat.

Look at that, look at all the little moon-shaped crescents

inside this one. Can you see that?

That one has more than four.

Yeah, that one's got--

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and it is just so incredibly slimy.

I do have to keep dunking it in the water

to make sure that the body stays moist.

Look at that.

I mean, my hand is all wrinkled from being in the water all day

and now it's coated in slime.

So you weren't nervous trying to hold that jellyfish?

No, I knew that the species wouldn't sting me.

But there are some species out there

that do have an incredibly potent

venom, so much so that some species

are capable of killing a human. MARK: Really?

Like what? - Yeah.

Uh, I believe the box jellyfish.

Ooh, Australia coming up soon.

Yeah, you do not want to mess with the box jellyfish.

But a moon jelly?

Moon jelly, totally safe.

Well, I would definitely say that this was one epic

expedition, exploring around the San Juan Islands

where we came across all sorts of marine creatures,

from crabs and birds to harbor seals, and even

these slimy moon jellies.

that I don't actually own.

We're going to explore the bedrooms, the bathrooms,

the upstairs, the downstairs, the nooks,

the crannies, the trinkets.

You name it, if we have it, you're going to see it.

Now last time, we almost forgot about Mark's room,

so today we're going to look at Mark's room first.

Let's see what he's got.

Check this spacious spread out.

Ooh.

Man, Mark, look at this horse.

Looks cozy in here.

What kind of horse is that horse?

Well, it's a horse, of course.

Pretty fancy horse.

This is Mark's bed, this is where he sleeps.

Look at these pillows.

Is this a comfortable bed? MARK: It is.

Oh, man.

I think it's more comfortable than my bed.

It was comfortable.

Oh, man, check that out.

We've got some photos.

I love everything that's on the walls in this house.

And as you can see, I'm obviously a giant because I

can touch the ceiling.

I feel like LeBron James in this house right now.

Normally I can't touch the ceiling.

That's an awesome room.

So whenever you have an episode like this,

and I know last time we were trying to reference MTV Cribs,

I don't think some of you have seen MTV Cribs.

And everybody was like, Coyote, how much sugar did you eat?

I didn't eat any sugar this morning.

Let's look in the fridge and show you guys how much

food we really have with sugar.

Must have been the Maine Sasquatch,

but he left behind the blueberries.

As you can see, we also have water,

and my personal favorite, tuna fish.

This is like cat food in a can, but it tastes amazing.

Now sometimes I sit on this couch right here--

I'm gonna finish my carrot.

I've got these binoculars.

Ooh, do you bird or something?

Is that for birding out the win--

I mean, we have all these windows.

No, there are a lot of great windows for birding,

but actually I use this to watch the TV.

And I'll tell you what, it looks like a big-screen TV

when you're looking through the binoculars.

Lobsters.

These are the three lobsters that

were used in the filming of the lobster pinch

episode, all of which are saved and are

now going to be released back out into the ocean.

Coyote, what are those bubbles there?

This is so that the water stays perfectly aerated

and lobsters stay alive.

The water is very cool, kept in the shade and aerated.

So they are healthy, they are happy,

and they're about to be released back out into the wild.

All right, I'm going to put Lonnie in here first.

Woo, he's flicking water everywhere.

In you go, buddy.

There you go.

I know, it's a tight fit.

Then we're going to put Angry Andy.

There you go, buddy, in the bucket.

And last but not least, Little Lucy.

Let's head down to the ocean.

So it's low tide right now.

It is low tide.

We've got to walk way out there.

But that's good because that means when the tide comes back,

in the water is going to get real

and the lobsters are going to be further

out than if we had just released them right on the shoreline.

The first one to be released is going to be Little Lucy.

Let me take the rubberband off her pressure claw there.
