Yeah.
Look to your left.

Look at that.

That is a big tree frog.

Got it.

There we have it now.

Oh, I hear you.

During the wet season,

Costa Rica is famous
for having endless days

of torrential rain, which
makes filming episodes

incredibly difficult.

This is one of the most
incredible fossorial creatures.

Hey, Coyote.

I'm sorry to stop you, man.

The camera is getting doused.

I'm afraid we're
gonna lose the camera.

Ugh!

Dude, we have to
film this animal.

I know.

On one hand, this
natural rainforest cycle

presents challenges,
however, it also

creates the perfect
conditions for finding

reptiles and amphibians.

While on the Caribbean
Coast, we spent

several days exploring the
Costa Rican amphibian research

preserve.

And this expanse of mid
elevation rainforest

is home to one of the
richest populations

of frog species on the planet.

All right.

We are rolling.

Check that out.

And you are in the mud.

This is definitely
a good sign.

It has rained quite a bit
here in the rainforest.

Now recently we just
showed you guys an episode

with the red eyed
leap frog, probably

the most famous amphibian
species here in Costa Rica.

And while we were
out at night, we kept

seeing these larger tree frogs.

They're green.

They also have red eyes.

And they're actually
called gliding tree frogs.

And I figured you guys
probably want to see

this up close for the camera.

So what we're
going to do tonight

is head over to this pond
where they have come down

from the trees, work our
way through this gloppy mud,

and get some up
close for the camera.

Typically,
these frogs can only

be found high up in the canopy.

However, when large
rainstorms push through,

they descend from the
treetops to begin breeding.

And because of this, we were
able to witness all stages

of this creature's
life cycle, from eggs

to tadpoles, and of
course, plenty of adults.

Get ready to meet the
gliding tree frog.

Let's see if we can find--

Oh, there's a frog right there.

Great place to
look for creatures.

There's a turtle.

Look at that.
You see a turtle?

I see a turtle.

Think you can touch it?

I'm going to most
definitely catch it.

Oh, I see it.
- Keep the lights on it.

Got it.
Nice.

Whoa.

There we go.

Oh, that's a little
deep right there.

Check that out.

Wow!

Well, we've seen me jump into
the water catch turtles before,

but not for this species.

That is a white
lipped mud turtle.

Not musking on me.

Though, they are
capable of musking

like most musk and mud turtles.

Look at that.

Sharp front claws too.

And the bite of this turtle
is, oh, yeah, pretty powerful.

You see how long they can
extend their neck out.

I see you.

Yes, no, my finger
is not a tadpole.

This turtle is
definitely too small

to be eating any
large frogs, the ones

that we would be looking for.

But tadpoles and little froglets
are definitely fair game.

So we're going to put
him back into the pond

and see if we can find
ourselves some frogs.

There he goes.

Bye, buddy.

Woop, they bury quick.

OK.

Oh, look at this.
Ah!

Perfect.

Right on the edge of
the pond, exactly--

Wow.

OK.

There's a snake right there next
to us with a mouthful of eggs.

That is a cat-eyed snake.

Wow.

It does have an egg
hanging of its mouth.

OK.

Caught this guy right
in the middle of dinner.

I'm going to take my
flashlight off it.

OK?
Yeah.

Does
it see well enough?

Yeah.

This is perfect.

And we are just
two for two here.

I'm going to gently bend this
leaf around here for you, Mark.

Look at this.

You see that.

Looks like fungus, right?

Those are eggs.

Those are eggs.

Those are the eggs of
the gliding tree frog.

Now this is one of the
dangers of being frog

and why these frogs
come down in the masses

to lay their eggs because
there's so many predators.

These eggs aren't
going to get the chance

to develop into tadpoles and
then drop down into the water.

Kind of sad, but that's
part of the cycle

out here in the rainforest.

All right.
Sorry, buddy.

We're gonna disturb
you during dinner.

Let's see if I can just gently--

Oh, now he knows.

We've been spotted.

Oftentimes, they will musk.

He's a very cool snake.

There we go.

Just want to be really gentle.

Hopefully with that mouth full
of frogs he will be thinking,

I'm full, I'm not going
to be biting anybody.

Look at that.

And these snakes have
incredible balance.

Look how it's capable of
just completely extending out

its head almost like a vine.

You see that.

It's looking at your
microphone right now,

Mark, thinking, hmm, that looks
like a place to escape to.

You know you have
some of your dinner

on the side of your face,
are you aware of this?

He's kind of like, yeah,
shouldn't have bugged me

during-- look at that.

I can just feel how well the
snake is capable of-- watch,

this is gonna to try to
get out onto the tree limb.

They can completely hold
up the weight of its body.

Look at that.

Wow.

So incredibly strong.

Look at how it just slinks
up the side of that tree.

That is amazing.

Let's see.

Can he actually hold on to that?

He's gonna curl
he's body around.

Wow.

How about that?

Well, two predators
right in a row.

I'm gonna let go of it.

I feel like it doesn't even
know that it has an egg hanging

out of the side of its mouth.

Can you see that?

I can.

Caught red handed.

Caught you, buddy,

robbing the nest of eggs.

So cool.
All right.

What I'm going to
do is actually put

him right back where he was.

I know that he is eating
the eggs of the frogs,

but that is a part of the
life cycle of these reptiles

and amphibians.

And I do not want to
disturb him from his dinner

any more than we already have.

Here you go.

OK.

Well, that's a
pretty good start.

We walked out of the
jungle right here

to the edge of
this body of water

and already have caught
two of the predators that

are out here, helping to control
the population of these frogs.

But for us, we want
to get up close

with one of these amphibians.

And this is the absolute
perfect time to do it.

Let's work our way along
the edge of the pond

and see if we can find some.
Sound good?

Yeah.
Let's do it.

What do you see?

What do you see?

Look at
this wandering spider.

Whoa.

That
is an enormous spider.

And if you walk underneath
a branch like this

and you bump it and that
falls into your neckline

and you take a bite, you
are going to the hospital.

Look at how big that thing is.

All right.

Just again, guys,
Mark, Mario, make

sure you're paying attention
everywhere that you are going.

All right.

Let's keep going.

Oh, there's a red-eyed
tree frog right there.

Check that out.

Ah!

We spent so much time looking
for a red-eyed leap frog

the other night.

And sure enough,
there's one right there.

Let's do this.

Actually get it up
close for the camera.

Can't let you not have a
starring moment, little guy.

Look at that.

Ah!

Isn't that awesome?

Oh, man.
Coyote.

Look to your left.

To your left.
Down.

See it?
- Perfect.

Look at that.

That is a big tree frog.

Oh.

Got it.

There we have now--

Oh, I hear you, chirping.

There is the gliding
leap frog right

next to the red-eyed leap frog.

Wow.

Now you can see the distinct
differences between the two.

And you'll notice the
difference is in the eye color.

You see that.

The red-eyed leap
frog has a much more

brilliant orange to its eye.

And the gliding
variety is darker

brown and significantly bigger.

Now the most
distinguishing feature

is, look at the side
of this frog's body.

You see how yellow it is?

All uniform in color, right?

Mm-hmm.

Yet the red-eyed leap
frog, can you see the color

on the side of its body?
Oh, yeah.

Definitely.

Blue with those
iconic yellow stripes.

And you'll notice
that the red-eyed leap

frog has very orange toes.

Oh.
Where you going?

Come here.

Very orange toes.

And very yellow toes on
the gliding leap frog.

And the size difference
is really the big thing.

So, Coyote, I notice
that you're holding the male.

How big are the
female gliding frogs?

Those are almost twice
the size of the male.

And that's what I really want
to get up close for the camera.

So let's keep searching,
put these frogs back

on their leaves, and
hopefully, we'll find one.

You ready?
Yeah.

Let's put them back.

Oh.

Yeah.

There we go.

Look at that one out
there on that tree branch.

That one looks like
it's a pretty good size,

and it will pose a little
bit of a challenge.

Watch that branch.

Here we go.

Yeah.

A little wet, but
I got the frog.

Here.

Nice grab.

Oh, I'm stuck in the mud.

Phew.

OK.

Back up a little bit.

I'm coming up there.

That is probably
about average size

that we're tonight, maybe
a little bit bigger.

But definitely, the
gliding tree frog.

Look at that little creature.

Wow. this is good because
now my hand is wet,

and it's skipping
the frog moist.

And look at how
those sticky pads are

just gripping onto my finger.

Now let's talk about the name
of this frog for a second,

the gliding tree frog.

And you're probably
thinking to yourself, well,

they must glide
through the rainforest.

Now when they leap they spread
out their arms and their legs

and then, flap, land
down on the leaf.

It's speculative that
they're actually gliding.

It could just be the momentum
of their body and the weight

as they're hurtling through
the air that makes it

appear as if they're gliding.

Either way, this
frog has definitely

earned a very cool name.

Compared to its body
size, its hands and its feet

look quite large.

Oh, they are.

And it needs to have these large
feet and hands because if it's

sailing through the
canopy from leaf to leaf,

if it misses a leaf, let's
say it just kind of goes off

course, it only needs one
hand to be able to grab on,

and then it will swing its
body up underneath and be

able to prevent
itself from falling

down to the forest floor.

That's pretty cool to be
out here in the rainforest

where we're getting to see
all phases of this frog's life

tonight, from the eggs to the
tadpoles, to little froglets

far out there in the
water, and then of course,

the adults, which are just all
along the edges of the pond.

This is a cane toad.

He's extremely toxic, and
tonight I'm going to show

you where he keeps his poison.

Look at that toad, totally
toxic, and totally right next

to my face.

And you may be
wondering, Coyote,

are you in any sort
of danger right there?

Not unless I plan
on eating this toad.

Now, a lot of you
have written in,

asking about these
amphibians, especially

if you live here
in South Florida

where they are an
invasive species.

Where is the poison in
a toad actually kept?

Is it in the toad's skin?

Is it in his blood?

If a toad bites me is
that how the poison

is going to get into my body?

Well, a toad isn't
going to bite anybody.

But you know who
might bite a toad?

Your pet.

And that's who we
have to worry about.

So where is that poison located.

It's actually in
the parotid gland.

You see that large bump
right behind the eye there?

That is where all
the poison is stored.

So this gland contains a white
sticky substance with a very

powerful toxin in it.

Let's say this toad is out
there minding his own business,

and your dog or cat
comes up and thinks,

hey, that looks like
something fun to play with.

If your dog or cat starts
batting this toad around,

what he will do is
puff up his body,

and then those
glands will swell,

and they'll start to
secrete the toxin.

Now let's talk about the
danger of this poison.

It's extremely toxic.

If you get it in your
eyes or in your mouth,

you're going to get really sick.

But what's even more
dangerous is for animals

out there in the wild,
whether it's your pet

or it's just a natural
animal in the environment.

If it comes in and eats this
animal, it can get so sick,

it may die.

But I want to do
tonight is gently

squeeze those paranoid
glands to show you

what this toxin looks like.

To do this, though, I
want to be extra careful.

It can shoot out
at points in time.

And I don't want it to get
into my eyes or into my mouth.

So what I'm going to do is wear
this really fashionable pair

of safety glasses and also
put a latex glove on the hand

I'm going to use to
squeeze the parotid gland.

All right.

I think we're all set.
Wait a second.

What?
I need safety glasses.

You're behind a camera.
You're going to be just fine.

OK.
- Yeah.

Trust me.
You sure?

Yeah, it's not going to
like shoot out in a stream.

It's going to just
be little white dots

that come out from these pores.

I've heard this looks a
little bit like a zit actually.

Not to be gross, but
that's what I've heard.

Yeah, it's kind of
like popping a zip.

But not as in like it's going
to hurt the toad in any way.

This is going to
cause absolutely

no harm to this animal.

And they're constantly
producing this poison,

so he's going to be just fine.

All right. we ready.

I got to keep my mouth closed.

So I'm not going to
talk during this part.

Ready?

1, 2, 3.

Oh.

Look at that.

I guess it does shoot out.

It get on your camera lens?
Yeah.

Jeez.

Look at that.

Oh.

I guess it does shot out.

Wow.

Look at that.

Holy cow, that is
a lot of poison.

Wow, it's sticky too.

I would not want that getting
in my mouth or in my eyes.

That could put you in
the hospital for sure.

That does look just like a zit.

It really does.

Holy cow, that
is a lot of poison.

And there it is.

That sticky white
substance, that

is the poison that you
need to watch out for,

whether it's you or your pet.

If you live in an area
that there's cane toads,

use extreme caution.

You get that in your
mouth, you're going

to be in some serious trouble.

Well, I guess now we have
answered the question,

where does poison
come from on a toad.

That would be the parotid gland.

Living inside of each
and every one of us

is a call to adventure.

Follow that call to Costa Rica,
and it will likely lead you

on a trail to the
Osa Peninsula, where

you are certain to
make discoveries

that will never be forgotten.

Hm?

Is there something on my face?

Central America is one of
the most biologically diverse

locations on the planet.

And if you know where
to look, there's

a chance you will encounter its
most elusive amphibian species,

a tiny yet toxic creature that
has always lived at the top

of my animal wish list.

However, finding one
would not be simple.

And this adventure would
require the team and I

to journey deep into the
heart of the rainforest.

Oh.

One thing that you don't
realize until you're

in the Costa Rican rainforest
is just how sweltering it

really is.

Now we've scaled down
the side of this ravine

and made it to a creek
bed, the perfect place

to search for amphibians.

What I'm after are
poisoned frogs.

Let's head up this way
and see what we can find.

Getting into poison
frog territory

is only half the battle.

The rainforest poses
many challenges,

but none more
paralyzing for a camera

team than a massive rainstorm.

Well, I guess this is why
they call it a rain forest.

It's really raining now.

For nearly two hours, we were
forced to keep the cameras

in protective bands while
our bodies soaked up

the deluge of torrential rain.

And while rain is
bad for cameras,

it's absolutely perfect
for bringing amphibians

out of their hiding spots.

You hear something?

Yeah.

We got one right in here.

Right in here.

I see him.

I see him.

Come up slow.

Yes.

Right there.

He's right there on
the edge of that leave.

You see him?
Hold on.

Red and teal.

Yeah.

That's it.

Let me see it I can just get
him to hop up on to my hand.

There we go.

Got him.

Awesome.
All right.

Now that we finally
got one, let's

get him out into
the better light

and get him up close
to the cameras.

Whoa.

Oh.

How cool is this?

OK.

Take off my pack here.

Finally, we have
found a poison frog.

Get ready.

This is the granulated variety--

Oh, oh, oh.

Come here, little guy.

I'm going to try to
just get him to balance

on my hand there for a
second, so you can see him.

Look at how adorable
that little amphibian is.

Right.

I'm gonna get him
under better control

so we can keep him
here for this scene.

Come here, little guy.

Gently hold on to his back legs.

That's an awesome--

That is a cool
frog right there.

I'm pretty safe right now.

I'm sure you're
all watching this,

thinking to your
yourselves, oh, boy,

Coyote, here you
go again, handling

another dangerous animal.

Trust me.

I'm in no danger as
long as I don't lick

or eat this little tiny frog.

This has to be the most
brightly colored frog

I think I've ever come across.

Being from Ohio,
I'm used to catching

green frogs and bullfrogs.

They're brown and green.

And you look at this
environment, the rainforest,

you think to yourself,
how does this frog

possibly camouflage itself?

Well, it doesn't.

It's actually doing
exactly the opposite.

This bright coloration is
called aposematic coloration.

It's actually a defense
against predators

because it warns them if you
eat me, I'm extremely toxic.

Now this specific species, the
granulated poison frog is not

quite as toxic as some others.

There are some species in South
America that are so potent,

you could die within
a matter of hours.

Now because this
is amphibian, it

absorbs a lot of its
moisture through its skin.

So I'm constantly putting water
on my hand from this creek

and dribbling it onto
the frog to keep his skin

wet and my fingers wet.

My fingers are actually
also capable of extracting

some of the moisture
from this frog's body.

The most important
thing is to make

sure I'm handling it gently and
keeping this amphibian moist.

Now one really interesting
feature about poisoned frogs

that separates them from
many other frog species

is that they do not have
webbing in between their toes.

If you can see there, almost
looks like the little toes

of a gecko.

And I don't know if we'll be
able to see that with a macro

shot, but they do have little
sticky pads right on the tips

of their fingers
which allow them

to easily climb through
the environment on leaves,

up and down logs.

It allows them to hunt through
the forest for their food.

And what they're
primarily feeding on

is little ants, mites,
and other invertebrates

that have high
concentrations of alkaloids.

These alkaloids once they're
ingested into the frog system

allow them to produce the
toxins that make them poisonous.

That's a pretty cool feature.

Basically, the food
that he's taking in

is turning them into the
superpowered toxic amphibian.

Male poison frogs are
incredibly territorial.

And our wildlife
biologist, Mario

managed to find himself in the
right place at the right time

to film an epic battle.

This was a true
clash of tiny giants.

As the frogs went
head to head with spin

moves and body swings.

This defensive behavior
is rarely seen.

And only few have ever
captured it on camera.

The rivalry was intense but
only lasted for a brief moment

as the challenger was pin belly
up and finally driven off.

With victory claimed, the
king of this territory

sat and croaked proudly
upon his leafy throne.

Now I would never
recommend that you go out

and actually pick up one
of these poison frogs.

Now, this species is not
potent enough to kill a human.

But if you had a cut on your
finger and some of that toxin

gets into your system, it will
give you a nauseous stomach.

And you probably have to
lay down for a couple hours.

What a cool experience
getting to handle

a beautiful yet
toxic amphibian here

in the Costa Rican rainforest?

Every time we film an episode
of Breaking Trail we are

faced with unique challenges.

And between the unforgiving
terrain, an onslaught

of inclement
weather, this episode

specifically was one
of the most difficult

we have ever produced.

It seems crazy that such a small
creature like the poisoned frog

would pose such a challenge.

But in the end, this was
one adventurous episode that

was totally worth the effort.
