probably the most basic.

First, how did you come up with the novel?

Uh, well, uh, man, my
publishers were really on me.

Uh, it'd been some time since
I'd released anything, and they

were like, oh, everyone's
going to forget about you.

You're all washed up.

And,

it just hit me that a serial
killer story is something that

would work.

You know, all you need
is a well-told story.

He doesn't need to be the
most innovative thing ever.

But if you tell it well,
it's going to work just fine.

[Dramatic music]

Wow. Yeah, that's great.

Okay, my second question.

Um, what is your, you know,
writing process look like?

Are you a morning or a nighttime writer?

Do you write in your pajamas?

Do you write naked?

I mean, no judgment.

Hey, man, I know I'm a horror
writer, but no one can pull off

that story.

Um, yeah.

I write whenever it comes to me, man.

I could write in anything.

And with nothing, I guess
I've never done that, though.

But whenever it comes to me, man.

So just wherever you get the inspiration.

Wherever you find it hard to
write like on planes or trains

or car rides or anything.

I do um oh man, I'm always scared.

Someone's looking over my
shoulder to steal the idea.

Um, writing books is hard
though, so it's not really

something that's too easy to steal.

Um, when you write, do
you drink coffee or tea?

I mean, do you booze it up?

Do you smoke a J?

It's the booze, man.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for vodka, liquor.

Um, I don't like to do it
before or when I'm writing,

though, but.

Yeah, after.

I mean, if you smoke a J after
the show, I mean, I got you.

I don't smoke.

So you're clear-headed, you're.

Only when I write, not after.

So you kind of pull the
James Caan in misery.

You only drink and smoke
after you complete something.

Um, when you wrote the girl in
the story, was there a special

someone when you were writing it?
Like a muse?

Or was this just entirely fiction?

Yeah, I was with someone at
the time, and not anymore.

It's mutual separation, I think.

But,

she was supportive of everything.

It just didn't work out.

But, you know, there's times
when someone else really brings

out the best in you, and you do
what you need to do to get what

you need.

And she was great for that.

Bro, should we be scared
of your search history?

The only thing I'm going to
say about that is sometimes the

only thing that's more
dangerous than a question is

the answer, man.

So yeah, we're going to leave it at that.

I understand the movie's

already underway with Lionsgate.

I mean, are you part of
the production at all?

No, the production is not my thing.

They probably don't want
to hear my ideas anyway.

It's too different
writing books and movies.

I'll be lucky if they'll even
invite me to, to the set, man.

Do you have a say on who gets

to be the killer or who is the killer?

Well, they haven't asked
for my opinion yet, and

I'm not sure who could play
this role right, and do it

justice, but I'll let the
movie people handle that.

your book for a second.

Um, is there going to be a sequel?

I know this day and age,
everything that's good the

first time they want a sequel,
whether it be a movie, a TV

show, a video game,
books, they want a sequel.

Is there going to be a sequel?

I've left that open.

I mean, if you read the ending
of the book, you can see how

there might be a sequel.

Not spoiling anything.

That could mean a lot, but it's
open and sales are doing very

well, so

I'd love to do a sequel.

Research is hard and all that, but

it's worth it in the end.

If the inspiration hits, I like that.
