We heard that dental floss is a great
hack for cutting cake.

But is the hack more effective than
using a knife?

Let's see which works best in this
Hacking the Norm.

Hello, Miss B. Hello.

You have a phenomenal bakery. This is
amazing.

And I love what you've done with this
cake.

You are a pro, and we want you to take a
stab, literally, at cutting the first

half of this cake, you know, with a
normal cake -cutting knife.

We are going to be using this.

Just some plain old dental floss. All
right. The tool that makes the cleanest

cut takes the cake.

Let's begin with the traditional method.

Absolutely. Oh, no.

Ouch. At the wrist.

Ah,

right through the, you know what. Oh.

Mrs. B, do you think this is going to
stand up to the knife test?

Well, I certainly think it will work. I
have never done this before, so I'm

going to use your lines as a guide.

It's hot.

There it goes.

I'm going to get a little.

It's on action in there. Yeah. I can't
tell. It got all the way through in the

middle. I've got to be really careful on
the way out. Ooh.

That was oddly satisfying. Really? Not
bad at all. You want to hop in? Yeah, I

do want to hop in. I'm going to take off
that beautiful chin of yours.

I'm going to get your fingers a little
dirty with this method. Do a little wavy

line, or is it pretty straight on the
cut? Kind of wavy. Okay.

Let's remove a corner piece now and see
how the cut looks. Nice.

Beautiful. Yep, that's very nice.

Dental floss. All right.

See how we did.

I'm so worried.

There we go.

We have this little ridge here.

Problem is getting all the way to the
bottom. By a jagged margin, it looked

the knife beat the dental flaw.

Not going to be as perfect as a knife,
but it would serve the purpose.

Will this be a special service you're
going to offer to customers, though? I

don't think so. Hooray, great, let's eat
cake.

Cake.

uses permanent marker on a whiteboard.
Hand sanitizer, pencil erasers, and dry

erase markers are all supposedly
effective hacks. To find out which works

we asked HR to send us some real -life
office workers for this hack -off

challenge.

In this corner, the dry erase product.

Yeah. We got a marker. We have a dry
eraser.

Do you think this is going to be
effective at all?

I don't know. Maybe.

Let's erase some stuff and just show.

what is permanent, what's not.

So clearly, this was dry erase marker.

That was the proper tool for this.

Someone really wants you to remember
robust learning. What in the world?

Hackers say you can cover these
wonderful corporate sayings with the dry

marker. And as long as the ink is wet,
you should be able to wipe both off.

And that's actually really effective.

Look at that. That worked really well. A
bit of a mess there, but it's a

cleanable mess.

Do you feel like you're empowered?

By my hack, my dry erase product.

She loves it.

Someone went to a corporate retreat, did
one too many truss balls, and now they

want everybody to know their corporate
values are vertical integration and core

competency. Your hack will be using a
pencil eraser to clean that board. Good

luck. Get in there. Yeah, hop in it. All
right, give it a try.

Is that actually working? It does seem
to be working, but I might be here for a

while. Yeah.

There's also, like, eraser particles on
it, so you're definitely going to need

some sort of cloth to fix it. If you
spent another, I don't know, 12, 13

here, we might not know that vertical
was ever written on this surface. Maybe,

yeah. All right, let's move on. To our
third hack.

How about some hand sanitizer and a
cloth? All right, let's try it out.

Oh, well, here we have something.

Synergy. Well, I'm enjoying the synergy
between this hand sanitizer and this

whiteboard. Me too.

Well, it's fully remover now. There we
go. You got to go in for the detail

Yeah, exactly.

Perfect synergy.

100 % right here. Brooke, you're guiding
eyes. That was the additional 10 that

we needed. Thank you. The clear winner
here, hand sanitizer and a cloth. It

on quick. It does an incredible job. And
the room smells amazing.

Breaking down the hack.

The dry erase markers contain a solvent
called isopropyl alcohol, which can

dissolve the ink.

The rubber pencil eraser rubs the
surface of the board, which removes some

the marker. But because it doesn't
contain any chemicals, it only succeeds

removing superficial ink.

Hand sanitizer contains isopropyl
alcohol just like the dry erase marker,

much greater amounts. So it's far more
effective at removing the marker.

Sometimes an item is so useful, it
ascends into the pantheon of great

tools. Today we celebrate one of those
useful household items that truly has

become a hack all -star.

Bread.

To fix burnt rice, place a slice of
white bread inside the pot for five to

minutes. That will get rid of the
charred taste, and your dinner party

be ruined.

All -star.

Use a stale piece of bread to scrub away
the greasy fingerprints that your kids

leave behind on your stainless steel
fridge.

To remove a splinter, pour hot water on
a piece of bread and place it over the

skin. Cover it with a bandage, and as
the bread cools, the splinter will come

out.

If you spill water on your leather
furniture, just roll up a ball of white

and blot the affected area. It's going
to prevent water damage.

Stick bread to the cut edges of cake to
prevent it from going stale.

Finally, you don't have to eat it all in
one sitting.

These are your kids. They demand a fast,
hot, gourmet breakfast every morning on

their schedule.

To prevent pancake panic, try storing
the batter in an empty ketchup bottle.

You'll make flawless flapjacks in
seconds.

Your kids can make a mockery of the
simplest task by putting their shoes on

wrong feet.

To make sure they never again walk like
Frankenstein, cut a sticker in two and

place half on the back of each shoe.

See? All your kids have to do is line up
the stickers correctly and they're good

to go.

Be careful. Make sure you're used to it.
Your kids want you to be their playmate

24 -7. Girls, just slow down. Which is
impossible because you are a busy and

important person.

To turn playtime into multitasking time,
run a long rope around their swing and

tie a secure knot.

Now, pull away while you catch up with
your child -free friend. I know, she's

great. Finally, your kids love to mess
up the kitchen. All right, who's going

help me clean up this mess?

No way!

But they disappear the moment that you
ask them to help clean.

To trick your kids into sweeping, take
two squares into the middle of the floor

and have them compete to get the biggest
pile. Yeah, there you go.

Great. So don't let your kids get the
best of you, because you have a hack

of defense.

Here's one more kid -friendly hack to
prevent a sticky situation.

Popsicles, they leave even worse stains
than ice cream because they're basically

like frozen through a die. You can take
a real solo cup, trim just the bottom of

it off, and then you make a little slit
in the bottom, and then boom, you've got

a no -mess treat.

Orange for purple.

I love it.

Today, it's Science Club versus Slacker
as we test out some solar -powered pizza

cooking hacks. In this hack versus... In
this corner, a trio of engineers from a

local firm. We're calling them Team
Science Club.

And in this corner, it's Johnny.

Johnny's the only one who showed up for
Team Slacker, though it's just... Team

Johnny.

Johnny, what's your strategy? How are
you going to cook this pizza using the

sun? My car gets really hot.

Figured I'd toss it on the dashboard
and, you know, see what happens.

I am so excited to learn how you are
going to cook a pizza using nothing but

sun. Please explain.

Today we have all the components to make
a solar oven. Pizza box, which will be

our oven, and the black paper will
absorb the sunlight.

We're going to use this aluminum foil to
reflect the power of the sun. We close

up the pizza box with saran wrap. And
it's going to capture in the heat so

that it's just going to cook just like a
regular oven would. Fantastic.

Have you guys done this before?

We understand. It'll work in theory. All
right. We've got some pizza to cook.

We're going to go head -to -head with
that guy.

We've got two hours to make this happen.
Ready, set, bake pizza.

Let's build that solar oven.

Team Science Club starts off the solar
oven by cutting a large flap into the

pizza box and covering it with aluminum
foil.

They then lay more foil on the bottom of
the pizza box.

Well, I'll let you get to work.

Yeah, okay. Okay, Goldman. Thanks.
Thanks, Johnny.

They line the box with black
construction paper, wrap the perimeter

with plastic wrap, prop it up with
toothpicks, and line in the pizza.

Oh, my God, you guys, this is amazing.

Oh, yeah.

Something's going to happen.

It looks slightly edible, but I've
noticed, like, the cheese hasn't even

yet. Once the heat gathers up inside, it
will start melting the cheese.

Okay. I hope that starts happening soon.

Johnny, you cooked that in record time.

I didn't cook this. I ran out and got
it. I was starving, man.

So the pizza's still on the dash.

All right, the moment of truth has
arrived, guys. Let's check out this

oven pizza.

Okay. How's it going over there? Oh,
looks like that may have gotten lukewarm

best. Well, I guess there's really only
one way to truly determine which was the

winner. Let me give you a slice, okay?

That sounded so crisp as you were
cutting into it. Well, it's not cold.

definitely not.

Okay.

Mmm. Yeah?

Yeah. We did good, guys, right?

Try mine.

Yeah, let's try Johnny's. Oh, Johnny,
you want me to try yours? Yes. Okay.

Oh, that's even less cooked.

Looks like neither hat can cook a pizza
in a reasonable amount of time.

Stick with the old -fashioned way. Or be
a slacker like Johnny and just... Stick

with delivery.

Leaving your house alone for an extended
period of time, that can be daunting.

Sure. But it doesn't have to be.

Here's how to hack your home while away.

You don't need to bother your neighbors
about watering your house plants ever

again thanks to this hack.

Fill an empty 2 -liter bottle with
water. Then put one end of a nylon cord

to the bottom and the other end in your
pot. Through the magic of physics, your

ficus will water itself.

Hooray, science!

Right? Make sure your house doesn't get
too hot and humid while you're out.

Dampen a light -colored towel and hang
it in your window. The trapped water

evaporate and cool the air that's
flowing through the house.

In case of an emergency, you'll want to
leave a spare key behind. But don't just

leave it under the mat. Glue an empty
medicine bottle to a pine cone.

Place the key inside and bury it. Only
those in the know will be able to find

it.

You can hide your alarm keypad from
intruders and judgmental interior

with some simple wall art.

Just use hinges instead of a nail. And
that allows you to access your alarm at

will.

When you're done with a beverage, rather
than just recycle the can, you can

actually hack it into a bunch of useful
items. You might have a Wi -Fi router at

your house. Well, did you know you can
use a can to improve the signal

It's true.

You need a can, a knife, and some
scissors.

Here's how it works. Take a can. You
want to go ahead and cut the bottom off.

Don't try this at home, kids.

Go to a neighbor's house. Once the
bottom is off your can, you're going to

down the old middle.

Cut along the bottom.

Here's how this is going to work. Pop it
over your Wi -Fi antenna.

Your Wi -Fi signal is going to bounce
off of this bad boy here, and you'll

improve your signal strength in a single
direction. It looks amazing, and it's a

great conversation starter. People say,
hey, what is that? And you can say, you

used the soda can to improve your Wi
-Fi. And you almost slit your wrist in

process.

Today, Kevin and I will be hiding behind
some mirrors and posing as a makeup

focus group.

We've set up hidden cameras, and we're
offering free makeup to anyone who can

hack household items into eyeliner, lip
stain, blush, and bronzer for this

undercover hack.

Come on in, and, yep, have a seat,
please.

Okay, so this is supposed to be
eyeliner.

I don't understand how this would work.

Makeup hack one, using an almond, a
lighter, and olive oil to make eyeliner.

Are we supposed to light it?

Don't burn the brush. All right.

She's a little confused as to what we
should do here.

I have no idea.

They're waving the white flag before
they even started.

Okay. I just wanted to know right away
if you just wanted any pointers or help.

Yeah. They're unsure about everything
that's happening right now.

You can use the almond. You can burn the
end of it so that it creates a little

bit of a char.

Freebasing eyeliner.

Break some of the char off.

Then add olive oil and mix it with the
ash, and then use that as a liner.

Well, they couldn't hack the eyeliner on
their own, so no free makeup.

This is like MacGyver stuff here.

Makeup hack two, combining water,
petroleum jelly, and powdered drink mix

make lipstick.

Making sure it's not poison.

I wouldn't trust that either.

It's hard because I don't know what the
ratios are supposed to be.

They're combining the powdered drink mix
and the water.

Is it working?

No. Oh, my gosh.

Oh, no. Sour face.

It's really, really tart.

You really have to love makeup to even
put up with this. No man or woman is

worth it.

Are my lips at least red? Did I do it
okay?

Yeah, it looks good. Okay. If you can
tolerate sour lips, then this hack is

you. And this duo did, earning them free
cosmetics.

Oh, is it the cocoa powder?

Makeup hack three.

Packing cocoa powder and lotion into
bronzer.

They're both pouring the cocoa mix into
their jars. It's not good at least.

A little glob or two of lotion.

It's a little glossy.

This is actually kind of amazing.

She's making it work.

She's happy.

All right, so it looks good. It's
blended with your skin really nicely.

The only thing is you have to worry
about bugs.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Insect -related paranoia aside, they
completed the hack, and the free makeup

there. All right, for the blush, my
friends.

Is there anything else in there? No. I
think they're just trying to see how far

they can get us to go.

Makeup hack four, highlighter as a
substitute for blush.

I'm not putting it on my face. Why would
you do that?

Brave, honey.

But who would think to do that, though?

Hey, that's hard. This is the funniest
thing I've ever done in my life. This is

much better than anything else. And a
round of free makeup for these brave

women. I'm going all the way. I like
them cheeks, though. I love her.

I love her.

I'm always losing my phone charger and
USB cables.

Now what?

You can stow your loose chargers and
cables in a sunglass case.

But now I have nowhere to store my
sunglasses.

Hmm? Now what?

Well, a hanger can hold up your entire
sunglass collection.

I couldn't hang up my shirt.

Thanks a lot, sunglasses.

Now it's wrinkled and I don't want to
iron.

So now what?

Roll your shirt up like a burrito and
place it under your mattress.

Remove it in an hour and most of the
wrinkles will be gone.

I like to take a nap, but now there's a
burrito -shaped lump in the middle of my

bed. And my air mattress pump is broken.

Now what?

You are impossible.

Trap some air in a trash bag and use it
to inflate your air mattress.

Now I have this lovely new trash bag.
I'd love to replace my smelly one, but I

can't get it out because of trash can
suction.

Now what?

Well, you can stop the suction that
makes trash bag removal tough by

holes in the bottom of your garbage can.

All right.

Done and done.
