This is the first day of winter.

NEALE: I knew this was going to be big last week

but I had no idea that it was gonna feel quite this epic.

You can't go and spend 7,000 bucks on a piano

and stick it in the room and expect me to let that slide, boys.

It's Living and Dining Room Week and our Blockheads are tackling

the largest rooms we've ever had on The Block.

No word of a lie.

The four spaces range from 67 to 107 square metres each.

Ceilings up to 7m high.

Huge.

Twenty-four hours to reveal.

We have got the brick laying to be finished.

SARAH-JANE: Around the hearth.

Plastering to be sanded.

About 100L of paint that's gotta go on.

Tiling that's gotta go on. Downlights. All electricity.

Got all the electrical to be fitted on.

Just take it all the way around.

Skirting boards, the floorboards... To put on.

..to be laid.

The curtains that need to go in.

The rest of the timber beams that need to go in.

We've pretty much got to build a whole room.

Got tiling, electrician, plumbing,

concrete polishing, brick face, grouting.

OZ: Saturday was the full crew.

Everything had to hit on time.

Saturday was a big push.

SCOTTY: Houses one and five seem up against it

but Dylan and Jenny are in better shape.

KEITH: How are you, Jen? Are you going this morning?

You look like you're gonna finish. Yeah, we'll definitely finish.

We're gonna do the roof first so then that's done.

And then we'll move up on our way down...

It's a very different room. I've never seen anything like it.

I can't say I'm a fan of that colour, to be honest.

I've got a really nice artwork going on that wall.

I think when it's all dressed up it will make sense.

Not only did they start Thursday but they rolled over the whole night

and continued right up until they finished which was today.

Money well spent though. It's a beautiful feature.

SCOTTY: Next door also has a stone wall fireplace but

it's nowhere near completion because Ankur and Sharon's builders

decided that they will only have enough time to

take it halfway up the wall.

I spoke to Scotty, our chip,

and he said "Yeah, you're not gonna get it done."

If the other houses are doing it then so be it.

I think at the end of it when you actually look at it,

it would have looked really great but...

I'm trying to keep everyone in the zone of reality here.

SHARON: This is the room of the whole house.

Yeah. This space.

Yeah but you've got to think that we have limited time to do this.

I think it hurts because we could have done it

and then we're not doing it.

You couldn't have done it in time.

(EMOTIONALLY) I don't even wanna look at it.

This wall, that's all I wanted and we can't have it.

We could have had it but like...

I need the support behind me from my building team

to be able to achieve this.

ANKUR: To go ahead and do that without our approval was even...

Yeah... Just silly, really.

Yeah, that's a huge stylistic decision.

It's just gonna look silly 'cause we're

just gonna have a big white triangle there now.

As far as I knew, everybody had a fireplace feature except us.

Ours was stopping halfway. So that just was hard. It was hard.

We also have a team that's not fully unified in achieving greatness

and that is hard.

(EMOTIONALLY) Every week this happens.

Every single week on The Block this has happened where like,

we never quite get there and we just bust our gut.

And it's just impossible,

the fact that this is the biggest room that's ever

potentially going to be completed on The Block ever in a week.

I just feel like we don't even get an opportunity to compete.

That's all.

(CRYING) That's the only thing I wanted in this house.

SCOTTY: Even though Sharon is dealing with a humongous room,

she doesn't actually have the biggest room on The Block ever.

Tom and Sarah-Jane in house one do,

a whole five square metres more to deal with.

16.3m long by 8m wide.

It's got 107 square metre footprint and that is huge.

Not to mention 6.8m ceilings.

But who's counting?

This is what The Block is all about.

When you look at it on Saturday morning

So, I start painting at about, I don't know, 12:30pm.

Which is normally all painted on Friday night.

We all know I'm normally the sprayer on The Block

that there's just too much masking up here.

So I'm on the paint pole.

Yeah, I had my doubts that we're gonna finish but not anymore.

Mate, I'll pump this in, this painting.

I know I'll do an all-nighter but I'll happily do it.

We'll get it done though.

KEITH: I wonder if the stonework's gonna go all the way up.

It looks like they've got plaster up there, Keithy.

So I don't know if they're gonna.

They can't, can they. You can't put no stones on gyprock.

The whole thing of getting living and dining right,

it was something that we had from the start.

This fireplace and the stones.

Because it's actually part of the plan

that there was floor to ceiling stones.

That was a key factor in planning for the room.

I'm perplexed why we haven't Villaboarded all the way up.

So, even if you don't...

Even if you get so high with the stone

you want to be able to do the stone all the way up later on.

That's what we were planning to do so I don't know.

The plasterer wasn't sure.

It would have looked nice but it's not realistic.

We have to be realistic on what gets done.

ANKUR: Scotty, who is our chippy, and Liam,

they know what they're doing

from what we have told them but, yeah, they can go a little awry.

just gonna look weird, I reckon, stopping halfway up.

That would have been an amazing feature.

Yeah, that's why Shaz has been crying for like, 24 hours.

Because of that.

There's bad energy in there between

client relationship and builder and that's what's affecting this.

That stone can be done. Definitely.

you've got to do it, at the end of the day.

Doing multiple cuts and you're screwing every 150mm.

do is put that Villaboard stuff or that cement sheet on top of it.

It saves us an hour too. You won't notice it.

We want to give our tilers the best opportunity to finish it.

So we need to get started ASAP.

KEITH: We were shocked that it wasn't going all the way up.

So, you had your own concerns about it.

Well, you look at it now. Imagining it just stopping there.

It just wouldn't look nice. It's weird.

And it's also a big white. A bit dodgy.

From my calculations,

you renovated 480 square metres in seven days.

Wow.

But it's not really the floorspace that nearly broke you,

it's the sheer volume of painting that had to be done.

If you add the walls and the ceilings together,

it's 1,560 square metres of painting.

That's nuts.

That's easily a Block record.

Like, by a mile.

And fun fact, it's just a bit below half an acre.

The judges were absolutely stunned at what you guys achieved in a week.

Overall we delivered more than I thought we'd be able to.

So, most proud of the timber work because I know how

much frickin' hard labour has gone into putting those up, all by hand.

The vastness of the shape that we're seeing here

and the fact that they've elevated it all with those raw beams.

It's just elegant and rustic amongst this contemporary feel.

And then, look at these pin lights lighting up the posts.

They all thought the addition of the timber beams was phenomenal.

The fact that these ceilings are painted that well is amazing.

Like, it's a phenomenal amount of effort.

And it's such an extraordinary volume of space.

SARAH-JANE: He killed it. He absolutely smashed it.

I mean, I don't wanna brag but I did

all the cutting in around the windowsills and the skirts.

But anyway, this isn't about me. This is Tom's moment.

But...

SHAYNNA: I'm not a fan of the dining chairs and table.

And I feel like there's this vast space

with a couch that's too small.

I just feel, because of the scale here, something bigger,

something grander.

And there's an eyesore. It's really very distracting.

All I see is a mess of cables.

I was wondering why the clock is sitting there in the middle.

To hide the cable. That's why.

The clock, it just doesn't work.

It's so out of sync with how refined this house is.

From day one we saw this steel structure go up.

I always thought this house was gonna have the most phenomenal view

and standing here, that view is to die for.

did not give her the same feeling of cohesion

that you have delivered previously.

For the very first time I'm saying this does not wrap around me.

I don't feel the same as I've walked into every room.

I don't feel their personality.

I don't feel their little nuanced bits and pieces.

when they changed it to concrete,

they'd use that timber on the ceiling.

So that's real blackbutt. That is such a perfect choice.

And that then draws you to that incredible fireplace.

Last week I really felt that I was

standing in a kitchen that was somehow in search of a style.

It was in search of an aesthetic.

It just wasn't... Nothing was gelling.

But my goodness me, if ever there was a kitchen, dining,

and living area that was made to go together, it's these three zones.

I am absolutely blown away by

what Rachel and Ryan have delivered today.

The room is ginormous.

Nothing's been done yet so like, it's just killing me.

It'll be an all-nighter tonight, I have a feeling.

We are most proud of the feature stone wall.

I have to say, that ceiling is phenomenal.

SCOTTY: Shaynna was immediately overwhelmed by the sheer size of the

space and she thinks that adding in the timber beams really warms it up.

And I really love those lights and that stonework.

To me, those elements just work together.

And that stonework, obviously it still needs to be grouted.

"Because it looks like the Flintstones right now."

We're in another hunting lodge. Yeah.

Well, we've got the elks to prove it.

We certainly have. Mmm.

But...

But I sort of feel from there down it falls away.

Yeah.

She found it to be lacking ambience.

Some of the same elements that they'd just seen in house two

but they just don't add up to the same level of success.

A lot of people will look at this area that we're in now

and think well, it's the same sofa that you all loved next door.

You know, so how can one be so good and the other not?

But it is how you use these elements

and it's the relationship between the zones, the spaces.

I mean, looking at that dining table,

from this angle actually it looks quite magnificent.

But it's very cold. It's quite austere.

It needed a huge rug underneath it.

What's lacking here are the things that make a house a home.

It needs bookcases. Yeah.

It needs more artwork.

"It just needs more paraphernalia. Some big lamps.

"Anything to make it feel more homely."

It doesn't gel. It doesn't feel like a home to me.

And this artwork on the wall, yes, it's impressive but again, to

me that doesn't feel like something you would have in your home.

That feels like something you would see in a commercial space.

Do know what I feel like?

I feel like I'm in the lobby of a hotel.

It feels like these spaces are now too big.

It's almost defeated them.

Darren did acknowledge that it must

have been a crushing amount of work to do in a week.

And you can see it.

This is so bad.

I'm trying to problem-solve in my head.

I'm actually sitting in my mind reconfiguring

what's here and trying to think about effective and efficient

ways that they can maybe just add a couple of things to level it up.

We're all thinking of solutions.

They've got some great features but they're not selling them.

They're not celebrating them.

Even like, we know that's an art TV

but I feel like they've picked the wrong piece of art for it

with colours that don't even work with here.

The individual elements here are lovely.

I mean, I love this leather sofa.

We all love the couch that you're sitting on.

The dining table certainly is magnificent.

It's an impressive piece.

These chandeliers are perfect.

Yeah.

There's a lot to love here but they've

got to rethink the relationship between all these elements.

"It just needs a few tweaks with the furniture

"and some time with a paintbrush."

I'm calling this their redo room straight away.

Yeah. This is their re-do room.

And they very much believe it needs

to be salvaged before you photograph it for a brochure.

Shaynna was feeling that the mixture of contemporary

furnishings with the traditional pieces isn't really working.

You know, we've got contemporary side tables and coffee table

but then we have traditional.

So it doesn't feel connected. It doesn't feel right.

It doesn't feel aspirational. No.

That's what I'm trying to say, I think. It doesn't feel lux.

that you would expect to find in a house

that will be commanding the kind of price that presumably this will.

done is they've presented something that is very cookie-cutter.

and this feels more like the proportions of my place.

It feels like a lot of real estate has been given to the dining table

and the dining table is floating in this huge space

and then everything has been shunted forward.

Whereas I should be standing here in amazement at the proportions

And yes, of course there are gonna be people out there that

love this interior and the way it's been styled

but are they gonna be the people who are prepared to spend $4 million?
