owns 25%, and the rest is kind of split

up around the town.

A man named Mike Galena, a blacksmith,

By the way, Mike Galena was Benton's
foreman down at the mine.

He votes his stock with Alice Fuller and
Rafe Benton, gives them control.

They want money. Money.

Everybody wants money. You, me,

Then tell me a little about the mine.

Gene Fuller and Rafe Benton developed
it. They borrowed local money when their

cash ran out, lots of it.

Rafe Benton ran the mine and Gene Fuller
ran the offices up here in town.

The mine petered out.

Fuller went away to try to get money to
pay back the investors.

Well, he died back east.

And the townspeople figured that Rafe
Benton had swindled them.

So they sent him to jail for a year.

Just got out.

What kind of conditions is he in now?

Personally, he's meaner than a rattler.

But money -wise, I hear he's been trying
to sell his spread.

Very interesting.

Now, if I need a lawyer here in town,

both of them, I don't know what it was,
Benton says to me, I'm going to change

my plea to guilty.

He says, I did it. I salted the Bible.

And from that moment, I couldn't get a
word out of him.

Of course, the judge accepted the plea,
and he was set up for about a year, and

that was the end of it.

I thought you were the judge.

That's right, I was.

As you know, Benton never held it
against me.

I gave him the minimum sentence.

Of course, his confession exonerated
Fuller.

Were you his lawyer, too?

Right, until he went away.

Now, what about Garson and Arnold?

They seem to want the railroad.

Sure, they brought the suit on behalf of
the minority stockholders.

They had legal recourse. They exhausted
it.

Of course, they were stuck with a bad
investment.

Too bad you weren't their lawyer also.

Obviously, I couldn't.

It would have been impractical. It would
have been a conflict of interest.
