It is comforting to know

his sense of humor.

Tonight's narrative is
called Final Performance.

Although whose performance,

I shall let you
discover for yourselves.

It begins in one minute.

- Hi, you goin' to Rawlins?

- Yeah, yeah, get in.

- Good.

Oh, it's cool in here.

How come it's so cool?

- Air conditioning.

- Look, I wanna warn you,

I'm having some
trouble with my car.

I just hope I make it.

- Where ya goin'?

Just Rawlins?

- No, I'm going to Los Angeles.

Hollywood.

- You goin' to Hollywood?

Hey listen, that's where
I'm goin', ain't that funny?

(car sputtering)

Hey, what is all this stuff?

You movin' or something?

- Yeah, movin' to Hollywood.

- Oh, you in the movies or what?

- No, I write for the movies.

- Oh.

Hey, listen, would you mind
drivin' me all the way?

I mean, that's where
I really wanna go.

I mean, if you don't

- Well, it's still a good trip.

I'll probably have to stop.

I can't sleep anywhere.

(siren wailing)

- Look, sheriff, I think
you've made a mistake.

- If you'll just
be quiet a minute,

I'll tell you what
all you done wrong.

Number one, come through
our town back there

at better than 30 miles an hour.

Speed limit's 15.

That's 15 miles an
hour right there.

Number two, you come through
trailin' enough blue smoke

to contaminate the
whole state of Iowa.

Number three, I've got you
in real serious trouble,

Mr. Allen, pickin' up
a young girl there,

tryin' to make off with her.

- Wait a minute, not
five minutes ago,

she flagged me down.

I just gave her a lift.

- Yeah.

- She begged me for a ride,
I'm going to Hollywood.

She begged me for a
ride to Hollywood.

Ask her.

Go ahead, ask her.

- All right, I will.

Rosie, what you doin' in there?

- Well, I was just out walkin'

and that man he drove his car up

and he got out and
he made me get in.

- Hey, what's the

Why don't you tell
him what happened?

- That's enough.

Now, Rosie you
come on outta there

and go up and get
in my car, you hear?

Yes sir, you in serious trouble.

Now you just get in your car,

follow me back to town.

- Look, sheriff I
didn't touch that girl

and I was not speeding.

- And there's number
four, Mr. Allen.

That's resist arrest.

I sure hope you carry
lots of money, young man.

(birds twittering)

Well, hurry up.

(engine sputtering)

- I'm havin' some
trouble with my car.

- Won't start, huh?

Well, tell you what I'll do.

I'll take Rosie on
back where she belongs

then I'll send a
tow truck after you.

Now, when you get into town,

you're gonna stop by my office.

Just look for the car.

You remember, young fella,
I've got your drivers license.

(suspenseful music)

- [Cliff] Now you get
right to work on it,

I'm in a hurry.

- I know, you told me.

Stop around tomorrow.

- I wondered if
you could help me.

- What do you want?

- Well, who do I

- Yeah, how'd you know?

- That's the only reason
anybody stays here

unless the sheriff holds
them up for speeding.

- Yeah, well I just left the
guy from the gas station.

- Ah hah.

Allen's a pretty common name.

- I knew Fred Allen.

I was on the same bill with
him for five weeks in Philly.

- Rudolph the Great,
you ever hear of him?

- Rudolph the Great?

No, I can't remember.

- Well, you do look
a little young.

You ever seen any vaudeville?

- When I was a kid.

- You musta seen me.

(bell dings)

I got all the cabins
named after stars.

up, clean sheets, towels.

(suspenseful music)

- I'll explain

but if the sheriff knew

ride into Rawlins,

sleep in a field, anything.

(suspenseful music)

Well, Mr. Allen,
got ya all fixed up.

- Yeah, yeah, everything's fine.

- You do look kinda young but
I thought you might remember

Rudolph the Great.

- Well, I don't know, Rudolph.

Maybe I did see you.

- Maybe I can
refresh your memory.

(suspenseful music)

- Quite a collection.

(Rudolph laughs)

What are you doing here?

- Oh, that's a long story.

I come through here
with a travelin' fair

about 10 years ago.

It closed down and here I was.

Me and Maggie and Rosie.

- Maggie and Rosie?

- Yeah, Maggie was my wife.

She was the other
half of the act.

You see, Rosie's folks
died in the Hartford fire,

you remember that and for a
while we all kinda took care

of Rosie and then the
county fair closed down,

I got a job here cookin'
then I took over.

Maggie died the first year.

That was the end of the team.

But Rosie and I stayed on.

And she's a big girl now

and we're gonna get
bookings as an act.

- As an act?

- Yeah, you know, another team.

We got a lotta routines
we're workin' on.

You oughta see 'em.

Well, they're not as good
as my old act used to be yet

but they're gonna be.

- You're a juggler?

- No, no, no, that's
just kid stuff.

Listen, I was next
to closing 43 times.

That's no juggler's spot.

I had my specialty.

I'll show it to you sometime.

But I can't just show it
to anybody, understand?

- Oh sure, sure.

I'd expect 'em to look at her.

- It's a got lot to do

'Cause when she wore this dress,

love, honor, and obey.

some anxious woman.

I wanted to explain
about everything

and I wanted to apologize.

and when the sheriff came,

our comedy patter.

when I'm so outta practice,

- Mr. Davis, you know Rudolph

happen up at his place?

about Rudolph.

He's a very
interesting character.

- I never heard a man

a comedy writer.

But I gotta have some new
material for Rosie and me.

My best friend, Louis Boyton,

he's got this one routine,
this one exact same routine.

circuit for 15 years.

He makes a good
living out of it.

He even goes on television

and does the same
routine and it wows 'em

but that is it.

That is the end of the routine.

That is curtains for Louis.

Everybody's seen his act.

No more jobs.

- Times have changed.

You young kids are

a television camera

and times have changed.

Instead of building up a routine

I still got what I had

when I played the
circuits and it works.
