a nightmare-like experience,

but that is only a prelude

to the terrifying
events which follow.

And now, speaking of
terrifying events.

be in a timeless,

neither light nor dark.

I have awareness but not senses,

mind but no memory.

Then I begin to
feel that I am being

pulled this way and that.

It seems that rival forces
are fighting for me.

- [Doctor] Here she comes.

Resuscitation seemed
to be retarded

this time for some reason.

Make a note of that, Nurse.

This is her fourth, isn't it?

- [Nurse] Yes, Doctor.

- Strange.

Well, get some fluids
into her and ship her out.

- After the fourth, it
should come easy, Mother.

terribly wrong.

- Now, Mother Orcus, it's
going to be all right.

Don't you worry about a thing.

Pretty soon she's gonna
say that she forgot

that servitors get beaten
for upsetting the mothers.

- It's Mother Orcus, Doctor.

She's been behaving
strangely since she

got back this morning.

(doctor sighs)

- Headache?

- What strange behavior?

- She's been upsetting
the other mothers

with some awful talk.

- It was disgusting.

And she's got delusions.

She thinks she can
read and write.

- Do you?

- That shouldn't be
difficult to settle.

Give me some paper and a pencil.

- What was the awful talk about?

- It was horrible.

About two human
sexes like animals.

It was disgusting.

- Get her to the sick bay.

Now, let's have it straight.

Who told you this stuff
about two human sexes?

- Oh, please, Doctor.

You were normal when
you went to the clinic

and had your babies.

Now you've come back
with your head full

of sickening nonsense

and then one day, I woke up

and I knew that I had
to start work again.

General Hospital,

but the work didn't
seem the same anymore.

Nothing was very important.

And then one day, Dr. Hellyer,

he was in charge of
Brockton General Hospital,

told me about a friend of his

who had synthesized a narcotic.

- [Doctor] What was the name?

- Sonodrine.

Do you know it?

- I've heard of it.

- In its original state,

it comes from the
leaves of a tree

which grows in Venezuela.

The Indians discovered it.

They chew on the leaves
until they go into a trance

in which they believe
that their spirits

are free to wander
anywhere in time or space.

- You have actually
taken this drug?

- The synthesized product.

- [Doctor] Why?

- I felt it was my
chance to be useful.

I had no ties, and
I didn't care what

happened to me, so I
volunteered to test it

and see if the reports were true

that it produced powerful,
mystical experiences.

It seems to have
produced a combination

of the absurd and the grotesque.

- You are suggesting
that we, all this,

are merely a product of
your narcotic hallucination?

- What else?

- Thank you, Mother Orcus.

I shall consider your case

and see what steps to take.

(gentle music)

- The last half of our drama

will be seen in a moment.

station-to-station call.

a piece of research

that produced unexpected
secondary results.

a man named Perrigan?

- No, I don't think so.

It's an uncommon name.

- It became very commonly known.

Dr. Perrigan was a
biologist working

on the extermination
of the brown rat.

He succeeded remarkably
with a selective virus

of great virulence.

But somehow Perrigan's
virus mutated,

and the new strain spread

with devastating speed
among human beings.

Fortunately, the majority
of women were immune.

But men were found
to have no immunity.

They, like the rats, were
completely wiped out.

- But surely, without men,

that would be the
end of everything.

Everything would collapse.

- It nearly did.

There was chaos for a
time and much starvation.

Almost all the
large organizations
broke down entirely.

You see, although women
outnumbered the men,

they had only been
important as consumers

and spenders of money.

When the crisis came,
hardly any of them

knew how to do things
because they'd all

been owned by men and obliged
to live as pets and parasites.

- That is simply not so!

- But it wasn't
their fault, my dear.

At the beginning of
the 20th century,

women were beginning
to have their chance

to lead a useful
and creative life.

But that didn't suit commerce!

It needed women more
as mass consumers

and as producers, so
romance was adopted

to promote consumption.

Women were induced
to believe that being

owned by some man and set
down in a little brick box

to buy all the
things manufacturers

wanted them to buy would be
the highest form of bliss.

- I tell you, it wasn't
like that at all!

All right, some of what
you say may be true,

but that's only the
superficial part.

It wasn't a bit the
way you described it.

It was my world, I know!

- There's such a thing
as being too close

to make a proper evaluation.

At a distance, we're
still able to perceive

your society for what it was,

a heartless exploitation of
the weaker-willed minority.

- That is the most
unrecognizable,

distorted view of my
world I ever heard!

Less creative indeed!

Women were in all
kinds of fields.

They were doctors and writers

and they had babies!

- What makes you
think there's anything

creative about having babies?

Would you call a pot creative
because seeds grow in it?

their simple function.

has great will to survive.

sure, test tube life

in simple form has
been achieved for years

before the crisis caused
by Dr. Perrigan's virus,

pursued their research

intensively along those lines.

So through all the
hunger and chaos,

babies somehow
continued to be born.

The girl babies lived,

and the boy babies died.

This was distressing
and wasteful too.

So before long, only
girl babies were born.

None of this is
really remarkable

as it seems at first sight.

You know, the
locusts will continue

to produce female locusts
without male assistance.

The aphid too is able to go on

breeding alone for
many generations.

So is it surprising that with
our superior intelligence

we're able to match
the biological

achievements of the insects?

- But what have you achieved?

- Survival.

You see, man was only
a means to an end.

We needed him to have babies.

- Where are all the babies?

No one will tell me.

It's no secret.

The procedure is very simple.

After the delivery, the
doctors examine the babies

and allocate them suitably
to different classes.

After that, of course,
it's just a matter

of seeing to their
specialized feeding,

glandular control
and proper training

in our rearing centers.

for giving her that
shot of sonodrine.

I never thought it could have
such dangerous aftereffects.

think that that was

at the bottom of
all this, Doctor?

and murder a man

she doesn't know for
no reason at all.

became so confused by
this drug that she,

she was unable to distinguish
between the actual

and the hypothetical.

She believed that
that hallucination

was real and acted accordingly.

And in that belief,
I can see why

she would feel
perfectly justified

in doing a murder, be
willing to die for it.

I have a feeling that
I'm being ganged up on.

- You might say
that, Dr. Waterleigh.

- It's for your own good, Jane.

About all I've got now
that really matters to me

is a sort of integrity,

the knowledge that
what I did was right.

That it had to be done.

hallucination was reality

and not just what I hope to
convince the jury it was,

an insane delusion
caused by the injection

of a powerful
experimental narcotic!

- I don't wish you
to convince the jury

of any such thing, Mr. Wilding.

If what I related to Dr. Hellyer

was only a delusion,
than I am insane,

because I am still
convinced it was real.

Real in the sense that I

actually lived through
what I described.
