SERGIO:

and it was the exact opposite.

I would've tried to do
the same thing.

ILIMA:
I love being
underestimated by Jorge.

I'm definitely riding that wave
into today.

I'm more determined than ever.

Today's a turning point
in the team challenge.

We got to get after it
for real today.

JORGE:

Whatever team wins today,

But we lost
our last team challenge,

and then Beth and I

had to go head-to-head
in overtime.

We really need to come out of
the gate with a win today.

ALY:

I feel like I'm in, like,

a really good mindset.

SERGIO:

[overlapping chatter, laughing]

ALY:

LAURA:
Carpenters Union

LAURA:
There are three different
carpenters on their team.

BETH:
It's really nice and clean

KEOGHAN:
There's a word
that seems to appear

again and again and again
inside this beautiful workshop.

KEOGHAN:

Sergio, what does 714 mean
to you?

Means everything to me.

This is where I got my skills
to pay the bills.

Feel like I'm right at home.

Ilima's smiling like,

and this is where you can
learn and earn.

Having been on Tough As Nails,
when I see a hammer,

I think of
someone in particular,

and he's here today.

ALL:

KEOGHAN:
It's Hanger time!

-[cheering]

KEOGHAN:

Holding a hammer
comes second nature to me.

Our winner today was
Hanger by 15 seconds.

married to his wife

for 29 years;
she's a union nurse.

KEOGHAN:
It's like 1985 all over again.

He's definitely
invited to my wedding.

HANGER:

KEOGHAN:
Hanger, what have you
been up to since you left us?

I am now a woodshop teacher
at a local high school.

This is, uh, my local 714.

The skills that I've acquired
here, I'm truly blessed.

And now I get to teach
the next generation.

KEOGHAN:
All right, let me tell you about

today's job; you are going to be

building some scaffolding--

structures that provide
a safe working platform

when working up high.

Once that work whistle blows,
you get to start

taking out all the pieces

and assembling them
exactly as they are

laid out here in this blueprint.

The scaffold is two levels high.

You'll see that
there are six bays,

as well as some railing
on top of the second level.

That is for security.

All the pieces you need are

on the back of your trucks
and on the trailers.

Once you have
your scaffolding assembled,

drop your team banner over
the side of the scaffolding,

and that team
will get the victory.

If you win today...

But I'm able to put people

and do what we need to do
to get things done.

and you know
how to give out orders

and delegate,
this is perfect for you.

SERGIO:
Yep, I'm ready.

I do want to go up top.

Yeah, who's afraid of heights?

I'm not a big fan of it.

MISTER:
It's a lot to do
on the bottom anyway.

LAURA:
I do have a fear of heights.

So the plan is

Renée and I will stay on
the ground

and hand everything
up to everyone up top.

Aly, you fall in with Jorge.

I'm gonna hang on
to Synethia, then.

I'm feeling great,

because we have
to build scaffold

and I've done that in my
training to become a carpenter.

SERGIO:
This is fast-paced,

but if you try to go too fast,
complete fail.

SYNETHIA:
It's $60,000 on the line.

Dirty Hands is gonna
up their game.

ILIMA:
I think Dirty Hands has

something to watch out for.

straightaway.

Reaching inside their tool kits.

We have to build two levels

of scaffolding and then
we have to hang our banner

over the side of it.

You never want
to set your material up

right where you're working,
so they're doing a great job.

JAKE:
Remember, this is second level!

We had three of us attacking

those pieces
and getting them laid out,

where other people got
the blocks and feet secured.

MISTER: Watch your back,
watch your back!

KEOGHAN: Over on this side,
Dirty Hands, very cool.

Sergio, who's the crew boss,
very calm.

-Now these here...
-Yup!

I'm setting them in place.

SERGIO:
You got it.

I'm stoked because
this is what I do.

I can't even count
the hours that

I've touched scaffolding,
you know; it's been 25 years.

Just keep doing what
you're doing, just like that.

My strategy is to put

Ellery and Beth
offloading a trailer,

and then Aly and Jorge
squaring up a line

and getting things level.
Synethia's with me.

Keep going. Keep going.

She's just no fuss.

SYNETHIA:
I could grab this one.

SERGIO:
She just keeps moving.

JORGE:
Good enough.

Sergio wants me
to establish a straight line.

It's pretty much what I do
on a daily basis.

Just so you know
your scaffolding is-is square.

You want everything
to fit nice and easy.

Uh, you don't want to have
to struggle and fight it.

HANGER: We drill it into
an apprentice's head,

if they're not square,
they're gonna get in trouble.

So I'm hoping both teams
establish that square.

JAKE: Somebody didn't
put this in right!

It needs to have

really fast to things.

We're gonna have
to do the height one side

-at a time!
-LAURA: Yeah, but you gotta

get them straight,
and then we can fix the height.

HANGER:
Savage Crew is now ahead,
but I still don't

see a line here, Phil,
so that concerns me.

That line's gonna
dictate everything.

-ILIMA: There.
-JAKE: There you go!

Remember about the string line.

You need to erect
the whole bottom first

before you run a string line.

ILIMA:
I got the string line here.

JAKE:
Once we got those feet down

and X braces in, run a string
line from each side to side...

Right there.

...and then move
all the center posts to that.

And if you get one side square,

your other side's
gonna fall into line.

Run it all the way down!

If your foundation ain't level,

you're gonna have issues
going up.

Parts are not gonna fit
right together.

ILIMA:
There, you're good.

-Good?
-Yeah.

Getting those first steps
right are very crucial.

LAURA:
Now, listen,
do not put it against it.

You put it
just where it kisses it.

-JAKE: Okay.
-LAURA: Right above!

KEOGHAN:
You can see Dirty Hands

-is getting some decking up
on top of their first level.
-Yeah.

KEOGHAN:
The platforms on the top

also help to square
everything up, right?

-HANGER: Absolutely.
-Because they have to be

-fit in a certain way?
-Absolutely, absolutely.

SERGIO:
Are we good?

HANGER:
You need your diagonals.

KEOGHAN:
You've got to wait for

a thumbs up from Hanger
before you climb.

HANGER:
On the diagonals--

that's keeping it square.

Before they go up,

they have to make sure
that the diagonals are in.

SERGIO:
Hanger, can we go up?

Uh, something's
out of square here, guys.

LARRON: We got to fix it,
fix it, fix it, fix it!

We're ready to start going up,
and, uh, Hanger says, "No."

that's not right.

HANGER:

LARRON:

LARRON: Our lead is toast.

can start climbing

LAURA:

Getting the string out

after we already set up
everything was wrong.

So now our end pieces
were just off a little bit,

and we just had to
straighten out those posts

and make sure that everything

was plumb and level.

HANGER:

-JAKE: Renée, get the clips!

HANGER:

KEOGHAN:

JORGE:
Building the second level
is the easiest.

You already have
a base platform to go off of.

It's pretty much just

how fast can you
feed me material

and how fast can I install it.

Start bringing me planks!

I have Synethia
feeding me material,

and instead of coming back
with one, she starts

coming back with two and three,

and she gets it
all laid out and ready to go.

I don't even have to say
anything else anymore.

She always wants to be
one step ahead,

and you don't always see that.

It's something
I really respect from her.

-Let me get those planks!

-RENEÉE: What do you need?

I need you to hold it--
ladder, right there for me.

LAURA:
Got it.

Quite honestly,
the hardest part of today's job

is knowing where
all of the pieces go.

JAKE:
What a pain in the ass this is.

If you got to loosen it, loosen
it-- is that not sideways?

LAURA:
The most experience I have
is literally pushing, like,

a painter's scaffolding out of
my way to continue working.

-JAKE: Now just spin it.
-LAURA: It's not--
it's not level.

It was a giant puzzle.

KEOGHAN:
Both teams with

Now it's rinse and repeat

for the second level,

and they've got to get
that safety rail in.

ELLERY:

SERGIO:
All right, Jorge,
what do you need?

I need planks,
and then I need hand rails.

HANGER:

LARRON:

It looks like Dirty Hands has
a slight lead at this point.

Getting those planks
up on top of

-the second level, Hanger.
-HANGER: Yep.

Ilima's doing this by herself.

-It's much more difficult.
-HANGER: Yep. Yep.

HANGER:
If you started off with a great

foundation,
this wouldn't happen.

So now they're fighting.

JORGE:
Disconnect that other one.

BETH:
We get to our last

cross section, and the holes
in the X cross-shape bars

aren't lining up.

I need you to pull this
bottom one back.

[Beth yells]

We're about that much off.

[grunts]

BETH:
We're falling behind, quick!

HANGER:
Savage Crew's now ahead, Phil.

ILIMA:
We're taking everything

that we learned
from past competitions.

We understand everyone's
strengths and weaknesses.

It allows us to place everybody
in a perfect spot.

ILIMA:

JAKE:

I'm shaking it, I'm having her
pull the other frame back,

and I'm having people
at the bottom

adjust it left and right,
back and forth.

Just trying to get a footing

so I'm able to pull it back

so it pops right into place.

KEOGHAN:
Nice work, Beth.

Once you lock it in,
they can go up.

JAKE:
Laura, can you go up?

I'm taller,

LAURA:

I do have a fear of heights.

That's something
that I struggle with.

ILIMA:

LAURA:
But we'd all like to come
home with that $12,000,

so it's now or never.

LARRON: Don't stop on us,

LAURA:
Attempting to face a fear
of heights,

it's a whole lot different
looking at it from the ground,

and that was the part that was
making me nervous.

things kind of start to move.

That's when my fear
of heights is an issue.

going through my head:

Some of my sweetest victories

have been
in somebody else's turf.

KEOGHAN:

[sighs]

JORGE:
We're on our home turf.

For Sergio and I,
this is our wheelhouse,

this is what we do.

Kind of discouraging not winning
today.

[Aly exhales]

ALY: Today I feel like
we kind of let Synethia,

Sergio, and Jorge down.

I know how much this win meant
to them.

And the fact that
we couldn't pull it out,

it was a hard pill to swallow.

KEOGHAN:

HANGER:
I'm very impressed.

For me,

this is kind of like losing

I'm disappointed.

We leave every team competition
holding our heads high, like,

hey, we did everything we could
to win.

But at this point that's not
enough.

I don't know
what else we can do.

Nobody's weak on this team,
and nobody, you know--

honest, I really don't.

BETH: We have to stop patting
ourselves on the back

when we lose.

Like, "Hey, you know,
we still did a good job."

punched out who are only
thinking

about the team competition,

so we need to figure out a way
to use that as a rallying point.

We've got to win

-Like, we have no choice.

ILIMA:
Yesterday was awesome.

-Wicked awesome.
-[laughs]

So, today's individual day.

Just gonna hope

all of Savage Crew makes it
through today.

No one goes into overtime.

But statistically, we're
getting down to the point where

a lot of us might go up against

each other,
you know what I mean, so...

I've always been
a member of team sports

where you work together

and you
lean into your strengths,

and your strengths support
someone else's weakness.

But I'm one of only

seven left
in the individual competition.

There's no one else to depend on
besides yourself.

So, pressure's on.

Everybody trying to get
Dirty Hands knocked down.

Whatever the task is, you know,
hopefully

it's in some of our wheelhouses

and we can all manage to keep
going in this competition.

JORGE:
I need to win today.

I need to bring it back for,

for my carpenter brothers
and sisters.

It's a lot of pressure,
but at the same time

I'm feeling motivated

knowing that we have
some redemption to do today.

HANGER:
I know what it means to be here,
and I consider

As you look at our final
seven here, Hanger,

there's only two that haven't
been into overtime before.

Me, personally, I don't like OT.

-[laughter]

It's gonna be tight
competition today,

and I'm looking forward
to seeing it.

KEOGHAN:
When the work whistle blows,

The first thing you have to do

is you're gonna have to build
your Perry Scaffolding,

just like the one

in front of Hanger and I.

Then start installing
acoustic tile.

As you can see,

each section has
an air vent for the HVAC

and there is also

a fire sprinkler overhead.

Those are gonna be the tricky
parts to cut out.

As you can see,
you've got all the tools

you need to get the job done,

and Hanger's gonna be doing the
judging.

And I will tell you,

he will not accept
anything unless it is perfect.

Hanger gives you the thumbs up,

you are going to win today's

individual competition and...

on season four?

MISTER:

LARRON:
I look around and I see

that Jake and Laura have

nearly every tile installed.

They're both
working on their HVACs.

It's getting
really nerve-racking.

Jake is drilling in his cover.

Laura is also working
on her HVAC cover.
