Welcome to Crate Modular.

MISTER:
I'm very confident that we're
gonna close this gap today.

-KEOGHAN: As you can hear,

we are in a working, living,
breathing factory.

They take containers

and they turn them
into amazing things here.

Everybody,
I want you to meet Rich,

the CEO of Crate Modular here.

RICH:
There's a surplus of about
four million

shipping containers in the U.S.

We take recycled
shipping containers,

and we turn them
into buildings such as

apartments, schools,
all the way to

homeless shelters
here in our community.

Awesome.

RICH:
We start with a container,

we demo it,
and then skilled tradespeople

install mechanical, electrical,

and plumbing systems.
And by the time

the crate ends up at the end

of our assembly line,
it's a completely finished unit

that gets shrink-wrapped,
put on a truck,

picked up with a crane
at the construction site

to create a larger building.

How cool is that?

[overlapping agreements]

So, today

these containers
that you see right here,

they need to be cut.

This is the demo part
of the job.

They cut out doors and windows.
There are a total of seven cuts.

All the tools you need
to get the job done today

are laid out

on your work benches.

There's 100 grinder blades.

Don't run out.

We've already marked out

cuts that
you need to make on Module One,

but it's up to you
to do the measurements

and the markings on Module Two.

We have Jay and Armando

who are going to be
supervising your work.

When they see that you have
the measurements correct,

they're gonna spray an "X"

to let you know
it's ready to be cut.

You're going to be using
one of these giant cranes

to move the seven pieces
over here

where you see the Xs here
on the floor.

The first of you

to get all seven cutouts
stacked up

is gonna get the win
for today's team challenge.

I mess with these grinders

This is my first time
being the crew boss.

I'm kind of nervous,

but I do this every day
with this grinder.

We're kind of like
the underdog now.

I would like to do

I really think that
I've grown enough

to where I can be the crew boss,

and I know that y'all

BETH:
Aly is definitely
a badass for her age.

She works
in general contracting,

so she can get anything done.

And for Aly to say,
"I want to be the crew boss,"

it's a really proud big sister
moment for me.

I was thinking Sergio measure
and Synethia help him.

That way we can have
Jorge cutting with us

'cause I feel like
he'll be really quick.

Jorge does a lot of layout.

My thought was to take him
and have Synethia do layout.

My thoughts only.

Whatever you guys want
to come up with.

I actually wanted it to be Jorge
starting on the grinding,

but Sergio said that
he would be more comfortable

with Jorge doing the measuring.

We're gonna attack cutting.

Y'all are gonna

Sergio has a lot of experience

in construction,
and I trust his plan.

KEOGHAN:
On the work whistle.

My strategy going in is,

I want to put Renée and Laura

laying out and getting
the measurements

for one shipping container,

while Larron, Ilima,
myself and Jake,

-we're all gonna be
on the grinder.
-KEOGHAN: Savage Crew

already cutting
their first module.

Mister's looking after
his blades

a little more than Jake is,

who's already gone through one.

Crew boss Aly

has also burned through
the blade on her grinder.

Meanwhile, we have
Jorge and Synethia

measuring out Module Number Two.

All the measurements are there
in the plans.

You just have to look and see

what you're laying out
and prep it

so the guys can fall in
behind us and start cutting.

-Are you good on the mark?
-Yeah!

I'm a carpenter apprentice,

so I'm always measuring
in my everyday life,

like, metal studs,
2x4s, plywood.

KEOGHAN:
Laura and Renée
are measuring out

Module Number Two.

Put a mark on that.

KEOGHAN:
Both teams using
similar strategies--

dividing and conquering.

ALY:
The hardest part of this job

is definitely the grinding.

ILIMA:
The blades are thin,

and this container's
really thick.

If you're not pulling

a straight line down,

it'll just shred
your entire blade

right off of your grinder.

You're trying to
guide this thing.

It's vibrating,
you're moving it different ways,

so your arms start to throb
a little bit.

[Ellery groans]

The blades were
grinding down very fast.

It messes with your head

because you just put on
a fresh blade,

and with a matter of seconds,
you have to change it.

Dirty Hands frantically
switching out the blades.

They have gone through
dozens of blades already.

Meanwhile,
Jake and Mister working

on this very large cutout.

MISTER:
As soon as you dig off
into that metal,

you feel that vibration going

and it feels like butter almost.

[Johann Strauss II's

I'm thinking to myself,
like, "This is easy."

Whoo!

Damn it.

I've never cut

giant holes in, you know,

big metal things before
with a grinder.

Come on!

I'm panicking in my head like,

"Oh, my God, I'm,
I'm holding our team up."

Dude, we're gonna run out
of blades at this point.

KEOGHAN:
Take it easy on those blades.

You've only got 100 each.

All right, I'm going over.

MISTER:
Larron, he's gonna run
that crane

because he does that
every day at his work.

So I had plenty of faith in him
to get the job done.

Mister! Hey, watch your

KEOGHAN:
He's got the hook attached.

Now he can cut out those corners

and release the panel.

Corner's cut!

-All right.

Moving these large
pieces of metal

with the crane
is extremely dangerous.

LARRON:
Watch yourself.
It's sharp, guys.

It'll cut right through.

Ilima and Renée
had to go and guide it

while I started moving it
with the crane.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew, the first
to get a cutout.

It might go down.
Let it touch the ground.

They've got to get seven done.

That's the way they wanted it.

a little bit more

What we have discovered is,

We went to pull it out
and it wasn't ready.

Sergio is trying to rip it out,

looks to see where it
needs to be fixed.

SERGIO:
So we're frantic, you know,
we're like,

"Let's get a grinder.
Let's cut these pieces."

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands, only one cutout
complete so far.

This will complete
Module Number One

for Savage Crew.

Now they can focus on just

cutting out the pieces
on Module Two.

Finally that piece came out.

KEOGHAN:
Second piece for Dirty Hands.

Savage Crew have three.

LARRON:
What's the deal with this one?

ILIMA:
Somebody lost the pieces.

All right, I'm gonna try
and find the pieces,

-okay?
-Okay.

We lost one of the bits
for one of the grinders.

So essentially the grinder is
useless until we find it.

I've got to find that piece.
We're not gonna win without it.

We have got to find it.

We have a little bit of panic.

It's a critical error.

This may cost
Savage Crew the win.

-It's got to be here somewhere.
-LAURA: What would it look like?

-Hey, Larron...
-[overlapping shouting]

Dude, we don't have the pieces.

-Somebody lost them.
That's what I'm trying to find.

'cause we can't keep going

with just three grinders.

We need blades,
it's slowing us down!

KEOGHAN: Savage Crew

Can Dirty Hands catch up?

Aly, you want to swap out?

ALY:
I let Jorge take over grinding

just 'cause I knew we were
a little behind on that.

JORGE:
I finished my measurements,

so I immediately
jump on a grinder

and start cutting
those windows out.

You know, as a concrete
form setter,

I use a grinder maybe
a couple times a week.

Using a grinder is just
letting the machine do the work.

Dirty Hands desperately
trying to catch up.

Look at Jorge just slicing
through those panels

effortlessly.

Makes you wonder why he wasn't

working on the grinder
from the beginning.

ALY:
Jorge is fantastic
with a grinder.

I think he is probably
the best out of all of us.

He's definitely catching us up.

We only have so many blades,

so I'm finding things that are
still three-quarters left.

I started gathering them up,
trying to figure out

if there's a way
we can reuse 'em.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew have used up

their 100 grinder blades.

Dude, we have these blades,

but you got to use them
all the way.

KEOGHAN:

their sixth piece out.

And it releases off the hook.

Somebody who does not have
a home right now

by the time it arrives

down to them in San Diego.

Now, in order for this
beautiful home to arrive

in one piece,
it is shrink-wrapped.

When that work whistle blows,

pull shrink-wrap
over the container.

The idea is, you want
to completely cover

this container with shrink-wrap.

Then trim the shrink-wrap
to size, and then finally

you're gonna use the heat gun

to secure
the shrink-wrap in place

to protect them
from the elements.

That way, they arrive
clean and pristine

in one piece.

Armando and Jay are back

and they're gonna make sure

that the job's done right.

is going to get

Next step, Jorge and Beth

are doing the cutting of
their plastic,

getting it sized up.

BETH:
Initially,

we're making really good time.

But then, I cut myself.

Jorge, I cut myself, dude.

I just need something
to wrap it with.

I was rushing, but in my job,

I've learned that it's important
to take a step back

and move slow.

This is a two-person job.

Like, Jorge is not gonna
make progress

if I'm not right there
helping him.

KEOGHAN:
That overhang is
the toughest part

of this wrapping process.

Let's see if Ilima and Jake can

figure out how to do that.

They're getting rid of
the excess plastic.

-Okay, I'm gonna push it up.
-LAURA: Larron and I used

the broom that we were given

to help push the plastic up
underneath.

Then we could tape
everything back nice and tight

-and finish it off.
-I got this.

MISTER:
I'm gonna start cutting

some of this extra meat off.

ELLERY:
There was an overlap

off the container,

so we cut inwards

so we could fold it in.

You want to win today, Ellery?

ELLERY:

MISTER:

ILIMA:
Jake and I, we find ourselves

a little at each other.

We got to put some tape on this
to wrap it first

and tape it up to the roof.

But we need to find the strategy
in order to move forward

and not knock heads
the way people think we do.

You know, getting to know Jake,
he actually has

a great ability to just listen,

and when you can make
eye contact with him,

that changes the whole game.

using the heat gun.

It starts burning a big hole.

And once you get a little hole,
it just starts spreading.

It takes a delicate touch.

You hold that heat
on the plastic too long,

you get a hole.

Looks like Mister's got
a nice touch.

And you would expect that
as a welder.

He knows how to work with heat.

I can see when my material
is getting too hot.

You know,
I have an eye for that.

ELLERY:

but I think that some of it

and we needed to wrap it

more like a Christmas gift.

This is kind of a mummy-wrap
coming from Beth and Jorge.

But I know that Jorge,
he has a lot more experience

as a whole, you know,
when it comes

to this challenge.

I'm not voicing my opinion.

to have Beth

you know, you're going up
against somebody

that you see is super strong.

Today's job is a little bit of
a pressurized piping puzzle.

You are going to be putting in
29 feet of copper piping.

The job is to install
the copper piping

so that the water will
flow through it,

come out the other end
from the spigot.

All the tools you need

are sitting on top of
these workstations.

You will install
the copper piping

through the holes
that's inside this framing.

The first thing you're gonna do
is cut your copper piping

into the lengths you need
to get the job done.

You then want to

brush flux
on all your connections

so you get a proper seal

at the end of the job.

Next, you need to solder
everything together.

And finally,

I need you to deliver me
a glass of water.

The first of you will stay
in contention

for the Tough As Nailstitle.

Last of you to get it done,

you'll be punching out.

At work, we do occasionally

have to solder wires into place.

I know what I'm doing
going into this.

First thing I want to do
is go take a measurement,

make sure the size
of pipe I need

so I can get
that first piece cut.

ALY:
Hey, let's go, Jorge.

He's good with the tape
measure, for sure.

I've never soldered before

and never installed pipe,

but as a concrete form setter,

I deal with a lot of tools,

so I'm hoping to be able

to use that as
an advantage today.

BETH:
I go and get
my first piece of pipe

cut down to size and then
the next step after that

is to put a lot of flux
on the pieces,

make sure everything's,
you know, nice and clean.

There we go, Jorge.
Keep it up.

KEOGHAN:
So much about working on any job

is how you organize the job,
how you make sure

that your tools
are readily available.

SYNETHIA:

BETH:
I turn the heat gun on
and I start to heat up

the entire joint.

The process for using the torch
is to heat underneath without

making a mess of it,
without glooping it all up.

JORGE:
I feel like
I'm making good time.

I kind of peek over at Beth

and, oh, crap,
she's already ahead of me.

KEOGHAN: Beth is up high
now in her ladder,

up and over this doorway.

He's just like, what,
one piece behind her right now.

However, she's yet to solder
that top piece in.

ELLERY:
Measure twice, cut once.

-LAURA: You got this, Beth.
-[grunts]

No. Ooh, there's a pipe.

BETH:
I noticed that
I had made a mistake.

One of my pipes was
a little cockeyed

and it ends up being
too tall up there.

It's not gonna work.

KEOGHAN:
Beth's vertical pipe

is sticking up too high.

ALY:
Hey, let's go, Beth.

SYNETHIA:
You got this, Beth!

ALY:
What's she doing?

KEOGHAN:
She's making a cut.

-ELLERY: No.
-LARRON: Don't cut it.

I have to.
It's not gonna go.

BETH:
At my job as an electrician
on board the ship,

I learned how to adapt

quickly in my mind

in any situation.

what you need to do, Beth.

BETH:
I know I'm ahead

by a little bit at this point

and I'm just trying to
keep that lead.

JORGE:

and she's smart.
Something inside me

just kept wanting to look over.

But I really kept picturing
my son sitting there

and stop looking over there.

But I had a little bit of

I mean, she adapts.

Since the first day I met him,

I've seen a lot of growth

pretty much tied up.
