we're experts in our crafts.

We're gonna get you guys to go

one at a time, head-to-head,

one challenge at a time.

Up first, here you'll see
a set of scales,

and behind that
is a concrete block.

You are going to smash
your weight in concrete.

You're gonna put it
into that steel cage,

through a tight
five-by-five-inch hole

and tip the scale.

This is about
power-to-weight ratio.

Over here, a skill job.

You will be using a grinder

to cut a slice
of seven-inch pipe,

and put it on the stand.

Sparks will be flying.

And then,
if you look over there,

those two bikes each have

a 50-foot chain
wrapped around them.

You have to undo all that

and throw those bikes onto the
scrap heap as fast as you can.

-Everybody ready to get to work?
-(cheering)

KALIMBA:
What Dirty Hands does

is work together as a team
in stressful situations.

This is something different,

it's gonna be individual,
one-on-one.

I think we're both
evenly matched

in this type of competition.

Dirty Hands, because you won
the last team competition,

you get to pick
your first competitor.

Let's go.

KEOGHAN:
Choose carefully.

Once somebody's been picked,
that person

can't be picked again
until everybody on the team

has had a turn.

Every time you win a challenge,

you win a stake for your team.

But on the fourth round,

one person from each team
will have to complete

-all three challenges.

-KEOGHAN: If you win that,

you will get two stakes.

just because once you do
a challenge, you're done

until you go through the rest
of the team members.

QUINCEY:
I wasn't surprised

when Mike chose the concrete.

ELIZABETH:
You got it, Mike.

QUINCEY:
He already came up there

with his guns out,
flexed his muscles a little bit,

and showed his tattoos.

It's what America

LIA:
Yeah, give America
what they want.

KEOGHAN:
Gloves on,
let's make it a good one.

MIKE:
I love a good challenge,

he's a great competitor.

I do weigh more
than Quincey does,

so, you know, I got a lot
of concrete to break up.

(work whistle blows)

-SARAH: Go, Mike. Go.
-KELSY: You got it, Mike.

KEOGHAN:
Lot of smashes
coming from Quincey.

QUINCEY:
My strategy right away
was bust the corners.

QUINCEY:
That way, you can work your way

towards the middle

and get smaller pieces
in order to fit

in that little five-inch hole.

Yeah.

-HANGER: Yeah.

-Mike, Mike.
-You can rest tonight.

KEOGHAN:
Mike has almost broken up

all his concrete.

(whoops)
Using a lot of power.

HANGER:
You're doing great, Mike,

I can't see Mike,
but I can hear him back there.

-(cheering)
-Just sounded like

cannons going off behind me.

So I-I know I got to pick it up.

-CHRISTINE: Breathe, breathe.
-Breathe.

KEOGHAN:
Quincey starting to load.

Using his hand as a hammer.

-You see that? Boom.
-He's got hammer-hand.

KEOGHAN:
Looking for pieces
that will weight this down.

First to tip the scale gets
the first stake for their team.

-MIKE: It's not easy.
-SARAH: Yo, ditch it, ditch it.

MIKE:
Some of the pieces are too big.

-HANGER: Come on.
-Keep going, Mike.

KEOGHAN:
Mike smashing a piece
on the ground.

MIKE:
So I start smashing
as hard as I could,

but, you know,
you feel like you're just going

-in slow motion.
-KEOGHAN: Oh.

Lost a bit of time there.
Here comes Quincey again.

Look at the way
he's sliding up the hammer.

Excellent technique.

Oh, this is gonna be close.

Both Quincey and Mike have
to have smashed enough concrete

to tip a scale with their weight
on the other side.

Oh, Quincey's starting
to teeter a wee bit.

-TAK: Come on, Quincey.
-HANGER: There's a skinny one.

-(cheering)

MIKE:
This is our last team challenge,
and ultimately,

I failed.

(sighs) I'm just glad
it's not over yet.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew,

Take a moment to strategize.

KELSY:
We have either grinder and bike,

that they have to pick from.

If we do Kalimba,

I feel like she's gonna pick
the grinder.

I like Sarah,
because Sarah can do either.

I'm cool.

We have to get a point.

No matter what Kalimba picks,

Sarah is a strong competitor
on our end.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew going with Sarah.

-Who would you like to pick?

that I'd rather go up against.

We have a fire captain
against a cement mason.

very quickly
with that long chain.

When I'm not working
as a fire captain,

I work at a day care,

and I'm untying knots
on shoes all the time.

I'm hoping that translates.

-KEOGHAN: Sarah's struggling
with that chain, it's tight.

SARAH:
I realized I had

wasted time starting
at the wrong end.

I could make time up

was follow the chain through...

KELSY:

...and just not get too panicky
when things aren't going my way.

There's just a lot of chain

So I started panicking
a little bit.

TAK:

-QUINCEY: There you go.

around my hangar.

My grinder's
a little bit smaller,

but we're tied up one to one.

I just want to go out
with a bang.

Kelsy, our crop duster,
going up against Lia,

our Jill-of-all-trades.

SARAH:

JEROME:
Let the blade do the work.

LIA:
One thing I've done recently

is small engine repair.

Working with lawn mower blades,

I-I use a grinder
to get out the big nicks

-in the blades.
-QUINCEY: No pressure, Lia.

LIA:
My goal is to keep ahead
of Kelsy

-and get us that second stake.
-SARAH: Less pressure.

ELIZABETH:

MIKE:

are a lot more lightweight.

It's so heavy that I'm not
getting that blade in straight.

SARAH:

SARAH:

every day by hand.

ELIZABETH:
I know I can do
very small movements

and it would break
really easily.

KEOGHAN:

And she finally gets it done.

Welcome to today's jobsite.

The team competition is over,

we are down
to the individual competition.

Because we're working
in a confined space,

I'm gonna ask those of you
who are not competing today

to go and wait for us
in overtime.

The rest of you, stay here

and I'll tell you
what your job is.

QUINCEY:
It's down to the final five.

Somebody gonna be
punching out today.

If I win the $200,000,

it'll mean so much
to me and my family.

You know, I didn't come
this far to turn back now,

so, you know, I'm all in.

It's gonna get busy in here
real fast.

There is a serious shortage
of wood right now,

so the recycling pallet business
is exploding.

Up and down this street, the
price is constantly changing.

Look over there, look at that.

The price is changing right now.

Guy just changed the price.

-Now it's $5.50.
-LIA: Supply and demand.

KEOGHAN:
In all seriousness,
up and down this street,

that happens all the time.

See the pallets behind you?

-They're all smashed up?
-Oh, yeah.

You would think that someone
might just throw that

in a dumpster, but no.

Hugely valuable.

Your job today is to repair
ten pallets.

Got to do it as fast
as you possibly can.

When the work whistle blows,
grab a pallet,

take it to the workstations.

First, you got to remove
all the broken slats

off both sides of the pallet.

Make sure all the stray nails
are flushly hammered in

or pulled out.

All the tools you need
to get the job done

are laid out on the jobsite.

And each of you have a stack
of useable slats

to replace the broken ones.

Keep in mind that they're
all different sizes,

so many will need
to be trimmed to fit.

The first of you
to complete ten pallets

and hang your hammer
on the wall,

will be the winner
of today's challenge.

The last two of you to finish
the job will go into overtime,

and by the end of the day,

one more of you
will be punching out,

losing your shot at getting
into the final four.

The good news is:
if you win today's job,

you will get a 566-piece
mechanic's tool kit.

-ELIZABETH: Hey.

KEOGHAN:
Okay, everybody.

Ready to get to work?

-ALL: Yeah!
-Grab a workstation.

ELIZABETH:
Thinking about the people
I'm going up against.

Quincey is very focused,

very detail-oriented.

Jerome is very calm
and very relaxed.

Mike's got a lot of strength.

And then Lia can have
incredible speed.

So they're not gonna
make it easy for me.

KEOGHAN: All right,
I'm gonna get Guillermo in here,

he's gonna check out your work.

He owns this place. Guillermo.

Thanks for coming out.
Make sure they do a good job.

On the work whistle.

(work whistle blows)

Jerome's coming back
for another pallet,

and being very methodical
with his selection.

JEROME:
The pile of broken pallets,

you couldn't take the top one,
you have to go find the ones

with less damage on them.

So, look
for the easiest pallets.

Less to repair.
That's the challenge.

Remember, you've got to get
ten pallets complete today.

Last two of you
going into overtime.

MIKE:
We have to smash
the old boards out

that are cracked or broken
and then grab

a new board from the pile.

Use the air nailer
to nail it in.

My boards were all longer
than my pallets, so,

you know, I took the handsaw

and, you know,
started cutting them.

That thing was flimsy.
(laughs)

Nice. Thank the Lord.

KEOGHAN:
Whoa, Jerome with
the first pallet complete.

And he's off to the pile
to get a second.

Guillermo, what do you think?

Oh, yeah. Ready to go,
ready to go.

KEOGHAN: Thumbs-up, Jerome.
One pallet complete.

ELIZABETH:
My first pallet I selected
was severely damaged.

I'm taking forever to repair it.

I really want to avoid overtime.

Jerome is already
on his second pallet,

and I'm still working
on my first?

If this happens again,
I-- it's over for me, I'm done.

KEOGHAN: Mike,
you have one pallet complete.

Thumbs-up, Quincey, one for you.

Thumbs-up, Lia,
one pallet complete.

Elizabeth, you have a pass,
first pallet complete.

Jerome takes the lead
with two finished pallets.

MIKE:
We started off with
12 individuals that are toug,

and now we're down
to the final five.

It's coming right down
to the end here,

and there's no messing around
or no time for mistakes.

Jerome has the lead
at this point.

Six on the stack,
working on the seventh.

Elizabeth is starting
to catch up.

Solid with five.

Five complete, getting a sixth.

I got a lot better
at my pallet selection,

and I was fortunate enough
to get several pallets

where I didn't have
to cut any boards.

I want this win.

KEOGHAN:
Mike has got four.

Working on his fifth.

Quincey, got four,
working on his fifth.

And Lia with four,
working on her fifth.

LIA:
I use pallets on the farm,
where-- to keep the hay

up off the ground,
and feed in feed bins,

but nothing compared to this.

This was pretty intense.

LIA:
I need a check down here!

Let's inspect that, Guillermo.

Ah, no, it's not gonna pass.
Look at that corner.

Look at that corner.

LIA:
Coming.

-Too big a gap right there.
-What about this one?

(groans)
I thought everything was right.

Elizabeth and Jerome
coming down to the finish.

Elizabeth, you're passed
on your ninth.

-Yeah, he's passed this.
-KEOGHAN: Jerome gets
his ninth one.

Elizabeth and Jerome

Ten pallets, this to stay
in the final four.

Mike has never experienced it.

-JEROME: Uh-oh, uh-oh.
-ELIZABETH: What happened?

KEOGHAN:
Quincey with a jammed-up
nail gun.

He's gonna need
to get that cleared up

before he carries on.

ELIZABETH:
So close.

QUINCEY:
I'm on a roll, and then
my nail gun gets jammed.

And I start panicking
a little bit,

because I know
we're all neck and neck.

I got to get this thing fixed

and get it back going because

I have to stay out
of overtime today.

(groans)

-Damn.
-ELIZABETH AND JEROME: Uh-oh.

KEOGHAN:
Quincey, still trying
to get his nail gun working.

He's gonna need to get that
cleared up before he carries on.

QUINCEY:
Luckily, I got some experiene
with nail guns

and-and-and power tools.

Go, Quincey and Lia!

I was able to unjam my gun
and go back to work.

KEOGHAN:
And nine is good for Quincey,

working on his tenth.

Lia, Quincey, Mike,
only one guaranteed spot

left in the final four.

None of you want to go
into overtime.

Who's gonna be safe?

MIKE:
I'm sweating.

You got it, Mike. You got it.

QUINCEY:
Lia's beside me,

she's on the same number
of pallets I'm on.

Mike's on the other side of me,

he on the same number
of pallets I'm on,

and we're all just
neck and neck.

I can't afford to fall behind.

I got to pick up the pace here,

because I'm not
punching out today.

KEOGHAN:
Quincey's sweating
like crazy now.

-Gonna be close.
-Looks close, right?

Look, he got a cut.

KEOGHAN:
Quincey stacks his tenth one.

-What do you think?
-JEROME: Let's go, guys.
-ELIZABETH: You got it.

-That's it, looks good, done.
-KEOGHAN: And... done!

-Quincey has the hanger...
-Yes!

...and he's safe from overtime!

(Quincey whoops)

QUINCEY:
Broke my overtime streak.

I'm feeling good.
I can finally breathe.

Here I'm now in the final four,
ready to get the job done.

I've been to overtime
and I really don't

want to do it again.

But I'm gonna go out there,
and it's going to be a fight

because I've made it this far,

and I want to be
in the final four.

-(sighs)

QUINCEY:
Boy, that was fun.

MIKE:
I performed very well

for myself on this challenge.

Fought all the way till the end.

I haven't been in overtime.

Uh, I've been trying
to avoid it.

But I'm gonna fight
tooth and nail to win it.

KEOGHAN:

KEOGHAN:
So, Mike and Lia,

you will be fighting it out
for one last spot

in the final four in overtime.

MIKE:
It's gonna be

KEOGHAN:
And you're playing what role?

-The big guy, I guess.
-Yeah, the big guy.

-The big guy.
-We know how that story ends,

but I don't know, I don't think

you're gonna give it up
that easily.

Not that easy.

Today's overtime
is going to be about

keeping your cool,
because each of you

needs to build a rocking chair

just like this one here
that Elizabeth

is sitting in so comfortably.

You've got to make the seat
for your rocking chair.

You can see that the cradle
is already done.

When the work whistle blows,
go and study your work plan.

You need to make six dowels.

You are gonna be making
the dowels by hand,

you have to size them up

using this die right here.

It's about precision,
because if you hit too hard,

you split the wood.

You want to use your dowels
to join the seat together

so you can build your chair.

The first of you to get
your rocking chair completed

will be in our final four,

stay in contention
for that Tough As Nails title.

If you finish last today?
You will be punching out.

MIKE:
I've never built
furniture before,

but, you know,
I love the pressure.

That's what my job
gives me every day.

It's life or death when
you're working on the line,

so you have to have
that mental sharpness.

Okay, let's get to work.
Mike, you'll be here.

Lia, you'll be working
over there.

-(applause)
-KELSY: Yeah, guys.

LIA:
First thing about Mike
you notice is,

"He's a big guy,
and he's powerful."

When people first see me, thy
see someone kind of average.

I'm five-foot-three,
120-some pounds.

There's nothing
about me that says

I'm super-duper capable.

But you can't judge a book
by its cover, honestly.

On the work whistle.

Let's go, guys.

(work whistle blows)

-KELSY: Come on.
-JEROME: Okay, let's go.

LIA:
Mike and I are given
a bunch of wooden pieces

that we have to assemble,

using dowels which are not
the right size.

So we have to take
the dowels down

to the right size
to assemble together

and make a rocker chair.

SARAH:
Let's go, Mike. Come on.

-Focus, Mike. Focus.
-Yes.

MIKE:
My strategy is gonna be

thinking of, uh,
doing Legos with my son Landon.

You see the picture and you lay
out exactly the pieces you need.

Good job, guys.

KEOGHAN:
Lia gets through
her first dowel.

CHRISTINE:
Nice job, Lia.

KELSY:
Did he just cut himself?

Oh, my gosh, he did.
Be careful, Mike.

CHRISTINE:
Watch your fingers.

MIKE:
I think I cut myself

on the box cutter.

I was trying to move
my dowel out of the way,

and it caught me.

KELSY:
Mike's bleeding.

KEOGHAN:
Mike, you all right?

MIKE:
Yeah, I'll keep going.

And then, as soon
as I start hammering

the-the first dowel,

uh, blood just started
going everywhere.

And I was just like,
"This is gonna suck,"

but you got to just
push through it.

CHRISTINE:
Good job, Lia.

Good job, Mike.

LIA:
We have a hammer,

a little template
to slam the dowels down

and size them.

It's time-consuming and...

not just easy to make a dowel.

KEOGHAN:
Mike is keeping ahold

of his dowel as he works.

That helps to keep
his dowel steady.

Lia hitting at different speeds.

-LIA: Oh, son of a gun.
-(all oohing)

Oh, no!

-Come on, Mike.
-Nice job, Lia.

KEOGHAN:
Mike, who picked teammates
for Savage Crew,

battling it out against Lia,

who picked Dirty Hands.

First of you to build
your rocking chair

gets the last spot
in the final four.

-LIA: Oh, son of a gun.
-(contestants groaning)

Oh, no.

KEOGHAN:
Hit it too hard.

LIA:
Snapping dowels,

having to start over again,
it's a process.

And I had no strategy
whatsoever.

I'm winging it.

And then it dawns on me

that I have a little step,

so that I can get
a little height.

KEOGHAN:
Lia, talk about getting
on top of the jobsite.

LIA:
I can get straight above it,

so I'm not hitting at an angle,

and that's what I had to do
to get the job done.

KEOGHAN:
Mike is pulling it
from the bottom.

Good job, Mike.

KEOGHAN:
He's got his first
dowel complete,

ready to stack
the long support seat pieces

as well
as the connecting pieces.

You got it.

ELIZABETH:
Come on, Mike!

KEOGHAN:
Mike is taking a second

to line up all the spacers.

KELSY:
He's stacking them.

MIKE:
You have to have
a really good, organized plan

on how you work this.

One wrong move
could set you back.

(rooster crows)

-(laughs)
-KEOGHAN: Chickens
are yelling out for you.

Those are roosters.

Uh, those roosters
are yelling out for you, sorry.

I knew she was
gonna correct you.

(screeching)

KEOGHAN:
Lia's first dowel on her seat.

And Mike
with his first dowel in.

MIKE:
I'm getting into a rhythm

of doing these dowels correctly.

You know, just staying
at a steady pace.

Listening to my wife in my head
saying, you know,

"Take it nice and easy,

don't be a bull
in a china shop."

There you go, Mike.

Mike with four dowels in.

Lia working on her fourth.

(contestants groan)

It's okay! We got another side.

Don't worry about it.

LIA:
In the process of trying to make

a new dowel,
I-I broke one or two.

KEOGHAN:
Whoa. Watch that.

LIA:
But I'm not gonna
beat myself up.

I'm just gonna keep moving.

ELIZABETH:
Nice.

Mike gets that fifth dowel in.

One more piece of dowel
for Mike.

SARAH:
One more. One more.

Don't take a chance
on breaking it, take your time.

Mike has the saw out,
cutting his sixth dowel.

Lia doing a great job
pushing out the broken dowel,

pushing the new one through.

LIA:
I'm feeling like
I'm way behind Mike,

but the same thing
that's happening to me

could happen to Mike,

so I just-- you can't stop.

KEOGHAN:
Beautiful work. Look at that.

-Straight, straight, straight.
-That's nice work, Lia.

Both Mike and Lia working
on their sixth and final dowel.

MIKE:
My forearms were burning,

going through,
hitting those dowels,

and I was like, "Whatever,
just keep going, Mike,

just keep going."

Oh...

Mike has a break.

Now he's got to make
another dowel from scratch.

That's a disaster.

Lia's now looking to get
this sixth dowel in.

Mike and Lia fighting it out
to stay in the final four.

-KEOGHAN:
There's a little bit of dowel

left at the top.

Lia's cutting
off her sixth dowel.

I came here to win and to be

the next Tough As Nails
champion.

So taking a loss
was heartbreaking for me.

But Lia's a great competitor.

and me being able

we kind of grew a bond together.

And I have so much respect
for her.

I mean, my family just grew
bigger now, and, you know,

I-I love it and I wouldn't
change anything for the world.
