the country

to find the toughest
of them all.

Only 12 made the cut.

They've been ordered to report
to Camp Pendleton in California

for the start
of a life-changing competition.

LIA:
I don't think I was born
with whatever brain cell

tells you
to be afraid of things.

I was an active duty Marine
for four years,

so I feel at home.

And I'm gonna win
with such a stretch

that people are gonna be like,
"We need to make this harder."

MIKE:
I have mental toughness,
physical toughness,

endurance.

I'm the whole package,
and I'm gonna bring it.

ALFIE:
I came to this competition
with a heart of a lion.

I don't know how to quit.

I don't know second place.
I'm here to win.

KELSY:
What is that?

-Oh, no.
-Oh, shoot.

KELSY:
Oh, gosh.

(laughs):

KELSY:
Seeing that ocean

and the military trucks,

it's breathtaking.

-(laughter)
-It's just unbelievable.

I come from a town

of 900 people.
(laughs)

I cannot wrap my head
around what's happening.

Talk about a grand entrance.

you guys-- it's Phil!

(whooping)

SARAH:
First impression
of everybody I see--

I-I know it's gonna be
a tough competition.

Phil brought us here because
we're the best of the best,

so I got to watch out
for them.

KEOGHAN:
Welcome to Tough As Nails!

(whooping, shouting)

You have no idea
what you're in for, do you?

(laughter)

Welcome to Camp Pendleton.

Welcome to Red Beach.

This is iconic, this beach.
Chances are

if you've ever seen a photograph
of a Marine training,

it happened
right here on this beach.

-Wow.
-Here at Camp Pendleton
they have

17 miles of pristine coastline.

This is one of the few places
on the West Coast

that hasn't had
any development at all.

To be here is an honor,
and you are standing here

because you are
the best of the best

in your chosen trades.

You've all got that
perfect combination of strength,

endurance, agility, life skills,
mental toughness,

but in the end, only one of you

will win
a 2022 Ford Super Duty...

and I am owner and operator

of a helicopter
crop-dusting business.

I'm Sarah. I am a cement mason
out of Queens, New York,

and my goal here is to be
the first female to win

I'm Mike, uh,
from Upstate New York.

I'm a lineman,
and I'm gonna bring the power.

The first thing we are going
to do is decide which two of you

get to pick
our two teams of six.

And we're gonna do that
by having you take part

in a military exercise.

(engine roaring)

You hear that?

That's the sound

of a C-130.

It has

a 45,000-pound payload.

That is a workhorse.

(whirring)

And what's coming out
of that C-130?

12 airdrops; 12 of you.

You're looking
at your first job.

Who better to adjudicate the job
and make sure

it's done properly
than this man.

(cheering, whooping, clapping)

KEOGHAN:
This is our season one
Tough As Nails champion...

Welcome, Murph.

-(excited shouts)
-KEOGHAN: Oh, hold on a second.

So, as you know,
Murph has served our country.

And I know that this beach
is special to you.

-This is sacred ground here.
-MURPH: It is.

I spent 22 years
in the Marine Corps.

16 years of that was
on this base, Camp Pendleton.

As a Marine,

we came in from the ocean
to do amphibious assaults.

I've landed on helos
on this beach.

My oldest daughter was born
at the naval hospital

here on Camp Pendleton.

So to be here with you
on this beach means a lot to me.

-That's so amazing.
-That's amazing.

So, let me tell you a little bit
about the job

that Murph's got
lined up for you.

When the work whistle blows,

you're gonna be
logistic Marines.

First up, run inland and find

one of the 12 airdrops.

It's first come, first served.

Unwrap your airdrop
as fast as you can.

Believe it or not,
those airdrops include an ATV

and trailer filled
with essential supplies.

Assemble your trailer
with wheels,

hook it up to your ATV--

you need to bring everything
you find, even the parachute,

all 1,000 pounds of it--

and race as fast as you can
back here across this line.

Getting through this soft sand
without getting stuck,

will require
some serious life skills.

First two of you
to get the job done

get to pick
our two teams of six.

Oh, they are going for it.

ELIZABETH:
I grew up on a farm.

Nobody wants to do any
of the work, so I just learned

that if you could do work
that nobody else wanted to do

and you didn't complain,
you were valuable.

As a general contractor,
I know how to manage

things that are unexpected.

I just stay calm,
and I keep moving forward.

I compete every day to work
harder than I did the last day,

and I've just come to believe
that I cannot be defeated.

-I see this
is holding it together.
-KEOGHAN: Have you ever unpacked

-an airdrop before?
-I have.

-KEOGHAN: What's the key?
-Efficiency.

Just getting the gear laid out.

Just got to get
in that rhythm, man.

MIKE:
Coming into this,

I felt very confident,
because...

what God has given me is...

is strength, and...

I want to choose my team.

KEOGHAN:
Quincey is actually struggling
with those straps.

My fingers so big,
but the knot's so small...

I'm struggling.

I'm struggling bad.

KEOGHAN:
You look just behind him,

Alfie is a clear leader
at this point.

Yeah, he's definitely way ahead
of everybody else.

ALFIE:
Age is a man-made

measure of time

that's used to measure us
or limit us

to where we should be

according to society,
but I don't buy that.

Being underestimated
is what I love.

I never quit.

I fight till the very end,

and I keep fighting
till the task is done.

Originally, I'm from Chile.

I applaud my father,
'cause he was brave enough

to just jump on a plane,

have 150 bucks in his pocket
and come here.

When my dad got here,
he swept floors at a tire shop.

But eventually,
he became the general manager

of that tire shop, and so that'

the work ethic that, I think,
took me to be who I am,

and I've raised my children
that way.

I'm playing for my family.

I'm playing for my retirement.

This is one shot in life.

I'm coming to win.

KEOGHAN:
Oh, wow, Christine
is taking off her tarp.

I would say she's in third place
at this point.

Kalimba's doing very well.

And Kelsy started strong.

KELSY:
I think this competition is
very mental.

You need to prepare.

With crop-dusting,

you need to be on your toes
any minute.

It only takes a second
for something to go wrong,

and you only have a second
to fix it.

I fly about eight to ten feet
off the ground,

65 miles an hour,
and I do about 40 acres

every eight minutes.

You got to realize that, hey,

this is a job
that's really dangerous,

and keep all your focus
right there,

in the cockpit
and what you're doing.

Uh, my whole family
has always told me,

"I don't know
how you do what you do."

I don't know
where the muscle comes from,

but somehow I get the job done.

I want to show all females,

don't let anyone tell you
you can't do it. You can.

KEOGHAN:
Lia's picking up the pace.

Got to get
all these supplies off.

It's a lot. It's 1,000 pounds.

Look at this. There you go.
Jerome muscling that.

MURPH:
Looks like Mike almost has
his trailer put together.

KEOGHAN:
Yeah, Michael is moving quickly
and so is Alfie.

It's gonna be a race
between those two at this point.

Lia gets her ATV
off the trailer.

It's rolling away
from her a little bit.

Christine is making
great progress, as is Tak.

Kalimba
just working steadily away.

Alfie is loading up his trailer.

I have a feeling
Alfie's gonna take this win.

-He's the oldest competitor.
-MURPH: Well, I know that Lee

definitely showed us
a thing or two.

-As did you.
You're no spring chicken.
-(laughs)

Elizabeth, working on the wheel
of her trailer.

As is Sarah.

SARAH:
Me being a female in my craft,

it requires
a lot of mental toughness.

When I go to different jobs,
I see the guys' faces, you know?

And I see them wondering
what I'm capable of, and...

I take enjoyment out of that,
you know?

It-it pushes me harder.

KEOGHAN:
Mike picking up all the pieces.

Alfie pulling in his parachute.

-Very close finish here.
-Oh, it's close.

KEOGHAN:
I don't think anybody else
is close.

It's gonna come down
to these two at this point.

Kalimba's finally got her ATV
off the trailer.

Whoa.

TAK:
To me, tough means...

just overcoming obstacles
in your life.

Like, I'm from Kailua-Kona,
Hawaii, and, uh,

work on the Island

is scarce.

If you don't prove that
you're one of the best,

they're not gonna, you know,

keep you hired,
because there's another guy

right down the road.

So I have to compete for my job

so I can provide for my family.

I need that win, 'cause
I'm gonna get married soon,

and I have a new baby,
so it would just mean

a lot to me if I won.

KEOGHAN:
Mike is trying to tie things up

Alfie loading his last cover.

-MURPH: Mike's
a little bit closer to us.
-KEOGHAN: Yes, that's true.

Here he goes. Is this it?

-Is this it?
-MURPH: Uh-oh.

(engine revving)

KEOGHAN:
Here we go.

Alfie's starting up.

(motor rolls over, dies)

(pedal clicking)

God, please, Lord.

(pedal clicking)

KEOGHAN:
Mike, he's rolling ahead.

He's looking behind him to see
if anybody's close.

Meanwhile, Alfie trying
to get off the mark.

But he can't find neutral
on his ATV!

Come on!

-(starts motor)
-Yeah.

KELSY:
The trick to start an ATV

is you have to be in neutral.

It will not start
if you're not in neutral.

-Come on, baby, come on.
-KEOGHAN: Mike, the lineman,

crawling along-- he must be
worried if he picks up speed

something's gonna fall
off his trailer.

-Come on!
-Meanwhile, Alfie,
can he catch up?

(laughs):
Only 50 yards to go.

Mike wants this victory,
he wants to pick a team,

but can he hold it together
and get over the line?

MIKE: Come on, come on,
come on, come on.

KEOGHAN:
Oh! And Mike's getting stuck

in the sand!

(engine revving)

(Mike grunts in frustration)

KEOGHAN: Can you believe it,
Mike and Alfie were

just seconds away
from finishing.

They would have been
picking teams,

but now they're both
at a standstill.

-Come on!
-ALFIE: It's overwhelming to me

I've owned motorcycles
since I was 13 years old

and all of a sudden

I have this thing
that won't go into neutral,

which is killing me.

MIKE:
I'm just like,
"You got to be kidding."

I'm within feet
of the finish line, and...

this is getting intense.

-Come on!
-KEOGHAN: Wow,

that's a huge effort from Mike.

Those ATVs weigh a ton.

If Alfie can get this together,
he could literally run

past him right at the end.

But with Mike and Alfie
neutralized,

this is a chance
for everyone else to catch up.

Jerome and Lia
have almost finished

Stacking their trailers.

LIA:
I want the weight on the front

of the trailer, so that
it has weight on the ATV,

so that I can get some traction

How could I lose this? This!

-Oh, shoot, shoot, shoot.
-KEOGHAN: Kelsy, losing control

of her ATV and trailer.

It's just rolling down the hill

-Sarah struggling to get
that second wheel on...
-Come on!

...as Kalimba fights
to attach her first.

Lia tightening those straps.
She's getting pretty close.

MURPH:
Quincey's hooking up
his trailer now.

(motor starts)

KEOGHAN:
Alfie, finally getting it
into gear.

-(motor dies)
-(whispers): Oh, you bitch.

All right, let's go.

Oh, my God.

♪ ♪

KEOGHAN:
Mike is just using
brute strength

to move that trailer

-onto the back of the ATV.
-(grunts)

If he does it here--
I think he's on harder ground--

he might do it.

(starts motor)

KEOGHAN:
Oh, here we go!

Lia about to come down
from the hill.

And over there, it looks
like Jerome is doing well.

He's about to finish.

Mike finally has
his trailer reattached.

But here comes Alfie--
he finally got his ATV going.

♪ ♪

You got to go fast, but if
something falls off your trailer

you've got to go back
and get it.

(engine revs)

♪ ♪

Mike struggling for traction
in the sand.

And here comes Lia.

Lia and Mike so close!

-Yeah!
-And there goes Lia!

She beats Mike by half a wheel!

-Whoo! Nice!

LIA:
I can't believe it!

I won the first
Tough As Nails challenge.

I'm 54,
I'm a Jill-of-all-trades, and...

I have done so much in my life,

I... I can hardly
believe it myself.

I started out as a Marine.

From there I was a full-time
professional firefighter.

I'm a chief warrant officer
in the Army Reserve.

I've been
a large-caliber gunner.

I've driven tractor trailers.

I've done almost every
construction trade there is,

but I am not a master
of any of these trades.

But I got a pretty good handle
on most of them.

Currently,
I do walking trail tours

on my hobby farm
with our alpacas,

horse, too many donkeys
and a goat.

-Yes!
-If I do win,

I would hope that
I'd take the money and the truck

and use it to help others.

KEOGHAN: And Jerome
with a very close third.

JEROME:
Man,

don't make Lia's look
fool anybody, man.

Her attention to--

just ready,
you can see her focus.

Alfie racing to the finish line
with Elizabeth right behind him.

SARAH: It was surprising,
uh, reaching the finish line,

seeing that there were
so many people there already,

but then to also have
the support of everybody,

it was definitely
an amazing feeling.

I know I'm the last person,

when there is none.

I'm a firefighter for 21 years,

and, uh, I'm nine years sober
being alcoholic.

It starts off as a way to relax
to unwind after shift.

Next thing you know
you're doing it

just to, like,
get up in the morning.

It was a long road back,

but I want to show my sons that
uh, that you can push through

any kind of obstacle,
even when things are hard.

I've been through the storm
and I've survived,

and I'm gonna keep on going.

QUINCEY:
You know, I-I played football.

I guess I made
a few great plays.

Did you play in college, or...?

No, I didn't play in college.

I sustained,
like, three injuries

my senior year
in high school.

I was one of the stars
on my high school football team.

My goal was to finish off
with a state championship.

I shattered my leg,
broke my tibular,

tore all the ligaments up
in my ankle. It just...

It was heartbreaking.

Yeah, pretty much just ended
my whole football career.

It was pretty hard to deal with
for a little while.

My family, my coaches,

they were all preparing me to g
out and play college football,

so that was a turning point
in my life.

But...

this Tough As Nails
competition is my redemption.

It's tough when you see
a future for yourself,

and then it just all goes away.

You overcome it, man.

MIKE:

I feel it.

KELSY:
We're not accepting losing.

MIKE:

What experience
does everybody have?

I'm currently a cement mason.

My grandfather was my dad,
growing up.

He was a mason
for 20-plus years,

and he was a hard worker.

I got a lot of determination
and drive watching him.

I have some bricklaying
experience,

some tile apprenticeship,

uh, eight years military.

-Oh. Thank you for your service.
-HANGER: Yeah.

SARAH:
My grandfather passed
away in 2016,

and I decided to leave the
military to be closer to family

Losing him was probably the
hardest thing I've had to do.

My grandfather
and me were besties.

While he built my mom's house,
I stuck to him like glue.

He taught me whatever
I showed an interest in.

My battle buddy referred me
to a program,

Helmets to Hardhats,

and they had a cement mason
apprenticeship.

(whirring)

I feel like
it was a sign from my gramps.

Every day I try and pass

those same values he instilled
in me to my nephews.

My alternate life goal would be

to take the land my grandfather
left in South Carolina

and build a property
that we can keep in the family,

just to keep
my grandfather's legacy going

and to keep the family
tight-knit.

Anything I do,
I do for my grandfather.

I know my grandfather
believed in me,

so I got to believe in me, too.

I'm-a give it whatever I got.

(waves crashing)

-Good morning, everybody.
-CONTESTANTS: Good morning.

So, as you know,
we are here to find out

who is the toughest of them all,

but in the end most of you
will be earning your money

in the team competition.

The first team to get
to five wins

will get a cash
bonus prize of $60,000.

-(cheering)

-HANGER: Yeah!

And for today's job,
I have $12,000...

-(whooping)

-...and today's Badge of Honor.

You want to collect as many
of those as you possibly can.

Now, guess what's arriving
on the beach right there,

with all those supplies,
you see that?

Holy moly.

-KEOGHAN: It's an L-CAT.
-Whoa.

MURPH:
It stands for
"landing craft air cushion."

They're doing marine exercises
right now.

And look at the payload
that that thing has.

All the supplies,
when you land on the beach,

straight from the water
onto the land,

and you can get those supplies
into the front line.

MURPH:
No matter where you're at,
your Marines need

the ammunition,
the food, supplies.

Without logistics,
the forward elements,

-they don't move on at all.
-Those L-CATs dropped off

those two containers
that you can see on the beach.

They're filled
with lifesaving supplies

that keep the front lines fed,
watered and ready for battle.

When the work whistle blows,

you will run to
your supply containers

and then use all
the equipment you find inside

to match this staging plan.

You'll need C-wire
to set up a perimeter fence,

set up a 305 tent,

load essential supplies
onto four wooden pallets,

then repair
the stranded Humvees.

Final part of your mission is
to raise an American flag.

That will signal a Marine to
drive out of the staging area

towards the front line.

This is all about teamwork.

So I feel confident in my team.

KEOGHAN:

LIA:
Start clearing and organize.

SARAH:

we got to get the pallet.

I have military experience,
eight years served.

The challenge is similar
to my job--

I was a unit supply specialist,

and we handle all the logistics
of any unit mission.

So it was very familiar.

I've done it several times.

Water containers, next pallet.

LIA: Get it out of the way,
get it out of the way.

Not in the center,
this is where the tank goes.

My strategy going
into the challenge is

to first unload the container,

position some things
out of the way

because I have to get
the tent out,

and that's going to take
six of us.

From there,
have a fence team,

have a team
to work on the Humvees,

and have
a team to work on supplies.

JEROME:
Okay, I got one pallet.

LIA: Take the pallet
where it belongs,

out to the side.

ELIZABETH: You guys got
to do assembly line,

'cause we're gonna wear
ourselves out.

-Yep.
-They're trying to move

too much material at once,

so I go back in my head,
on the farm.

We always do assembly lines.

It's a quick way to move
materials a long distance

without exerting
a lot of energy.

There you go.

Savage Crew going

Dirty Hands, breaking off,

-LIA: Help with these.
-TAK: I got them myself.

-Get the big stuff.
-LIA: We'll need you
for the big stuff.

I need everybody.

SARAH: We need people

I'll start filling them up.

while they fill that.

MIKE:
Sarah started giving
those directions out,

and I was happy to see her
be excited to,

you know, take this on.

She was just like,

"Okay, this is what I do."

KEOGHAN:
Four ammo cases, one trip.

That's gonna save
some time right there.

-I need everybody in.
-Okay.

Everybody for the tent,

JEROME:

Okay, Christine's leading.

She calls the shots.

-Let's go.
-KEOGHAN: Great teamwork.

Dirty Hands starting
their 305 tent.

We need to flip it up.

Being an ironworker,
you have to be versatile.

I have a big voice,
and when I give direction.

I give it clearly.

-Two, one, flip.
-LIA: Flip it over.

CHRISTINE: Our idea is to get
the tent set up first.

It's probably
one of the quicker things

that we're gonna do today.

Come on, y'all,
get that tent open,

-get that tent up.
-KEOGHAN: Dirty Hands working on

their first two pallets.

Savage Crew look like
they're one pallet ahead.

Now, they're moving on
to putting up their fence.

ALFIE:
Work it together, brother.

We got a lot of spikes to do.

HANGER:
As a carpenter,

I've installed many fences.

This is what I've done
my whole life.

I didn't have to think about it.
It came natural.

KEOGHAN:
You see the red line?

He's got to get it
under the ground.

Fencing, that was one of my
first construction career jobs

of learning the level side,

learning the hard work,
bust my hands up.

But, yeah, it was tough.

-Bring it in!
-JEROME: Wait, wait, wait.

LIA:
Pull it straight.
Wait, wait, wait.

They're having to stop their
individual tasks right now to...

-To go and work on the tent.
-Pull out.

Go, go, go.

As tight as you can, tight.

KEOGHAN: Elizabeth
working on the sandbags.

that's almost as big as she is.

Dang, this stuff is sharp.

CHRISTINE:

-KEOGHAN: Beautiful.

-Pop it in! Legs go down.
-Good teamwork.

Savage Crew, moving on to
their fourth pallet of supplies.

They've got their MREs.
They've got their ammo.

They've got the water,
one more pallet.

That's gonna be loaded up
with sandbags.

Attagirl. Hell yeah.

KEOGHAN: Dirty Hands are yet
to finish off their pallets.

They've got the water, ammo,

but they've staggered
their job here, Murph.

They've got supplies lying out
all over the place.

Not as well organized at all.

LIA:
Up! Go all the way up!

-I need somebody on this leg.
-KEOGHAN: Dirty Hands have
their tent up.

-That might save them some time.
-LIA: All right.

Everybody, find your job.

Back to the fence.

KEOGHAN: Look at the power
come from Mike.

And that is the hardest part
of the ground right there.

That is gonna take some work.

Dirty Hands, the minute that
they opened their container,

they ran and put their tent up.

We have a totally
different strategy.

-Shovel, shovel, shovel...
-We're going to take care of
different tasks

and eventually
all gravitate to the tent.

And we're confident
in Sarah's plan.

SARAH:
Talk to me, Alfie.

-You good?
-Huh?

ELIZABETH:
You want my help
or you know how to do it?

SARAH:
Go help him, I got it.

KEOGHAN:
Now we're moving on
to the Humvee, and...

Whoa, look at Elizabeth.

Sliding in to help Alfie,
like she's stealing home plate.

-ALFIE: One more to go.
-KEOGHAN: These tires are
no joke.

-Changed out one of these
before?
-I have.

-You almost up?
-I'm up.

ALFIE:
The challenge is to change
a flat tire on a Humvee,

then there is a broken Humvee
behind it,

so we have to make it
able to tow.

I was probably ten years old

when my father had us
take an engine apart,

and so that kicked in.

LIA:
Okay, wire team!

Let these guys hammer the posts.

Get the wire laid out.

KEOGHAN:
Look at Sarah,

carrying four sandbags
over to the pallet.

Come on, Mike!

They must be
towards the end now.

(grunts)

Wow. Did you see her
just lift that thing up?

-That's, uh...
-MURPH: That's pretty heavy.

Don't worry about that,
we'll that together.

ELIZABETH:
100 pounds, 150 pounds,
that's nothing.

I can lift a 200-pound plate
compactor up off the ground

into the back of my truck
in ten seconds.

(grunting)

Are we sure it's
in the right spot?

LIA:
Right in between each post.

Come on, guys, keep it up!

KEOGHAN: Who is gonna get
the win here today?

MIKE:
Keep going down to here.

KEOGHAN: Savage Crew getting
their C-wire out.

-They've got their stakes
in the ground.
-SARAH: Where we at, Hanger?

We got to run the other one.
It's a pyramid.

-MIKE: Yep.
-Good communications.
-Yep.

(engine starts)

Let's go, let's go, driver.

-Come on.
-SARAH: Hold up, hold up.

Already, Savage Crew
hooking up their Humvee.

-SARAH: I can rock it on.
-KEOGHAN: But they still have to
put up their tent.

Dirty Hands have their tent up,

and they're finally starting
to pound in those posts.

LIA: We're pounding fence posts
into the sand.

How hard could that be?

Well...

(metal clanking)

(grunting)

KEOGHAN:
Quincey, everything he's got.

Look at the strain on his face.

QUINCEY:
That sand is not like sand

that you walk on
on the beach.

Oh, it felt like I was trying
to drive through concrete.

I was looking at Christine,

and her and Kalimba,
oh, my goodness.

(clanking)

KEOGHAN:
Oh, Christine's got some power
in those arms.

-Come one!
-KEOGHAN: As is Kalimba.

I'm like man, oh, yeah,
we got a strong team.

-KEOGHAN: Good to go.
-I'm going to the truck.

-ELIZABETH: Lift and pull.
-KEOGHAN: Beautiful.

They're working
on the sandbags

as Quincey works away
repairing their Humvees.

QUINCEY:
My job as a mechanic,

anything that
has wheels and moves,

if it breaks down, I fix it.

I'm so focused on getting
my team across the finish line.

My biggest competition
right now is ourselves,

and we can't beat ourselves.

-ALFIE: Mike!

-ELIZABETH: Push it in,

-(Mike grunts)

We realized the tent was

according to the plans,

so we had to reposition it
really quick.

and strengths and move forward.

LIA:
