a lot of hard things

and I-I doubt myself a lot.

being a little kid

I was a quiet,
kind of nerdy kid.

I wore glasses with Chums.

I had a headgear
that I had to put on

end-of-school bell rang.

And I remember,
every single day,

walking out of my chorus class,

I would get stopped
by a group of kids,

and I was bullied every day.

That seventh grader
still lives in me.

I... I still have
confidence issues from it.

Luckily, my teammates are amazing people who have also

been through hard things,
who understand

what it means
to doubt yourself at times.

We've been through
everything we needed

to go through for this moment.

And we're gonna

collectively put everything
we've been through

to win this today. Okay?

This is where old cars

They're picked for their
reusable parts,

drained of hazardous materials,

and then hauled away to
have their metal recycled.

So, today your job is
to actually bring a car

back to life.

As you can see,
there are two cars here

that have a few parts missing.
All the parts

you need to get these two cars
up and running, you'll find

in this sea of junked cars.

When that work whistle blows,
you're gonna go

into the mechanics' shed,

grab your set of tools,

and then look out
for the work order,

right here.
This work order tells you

exactly what you need
to get the job done.

You've got to find
a front bumper, headlights,

hood, front doors,

sliding door, taillights,

rear bumper, wheels,

seats and battery.

Finally, you need to
hook up the battery,

because you've got to
get your cars going

and smash through that wall.

I've been to the junkyard

a couple of times in my day.

I do feel strong
about my knowledge of cars.

Going in,
we want to get the win,

tie this thing up.

First team to get
this car up and running

will win $12,000

It's a hard thing to deal with

you have to maintain.

If you don't, your organs are

It's something that you have to worry about all the time.

The amount of times
I give myself insulin

could be anywhere between

three times,
up to ten times a day.

I've had friends that
pass away in their sleep.

You have to set your alarm,

wake up in the middle
of the night,

make sure you're okay.
Every day,

you're gonna have your lows,
you're gonna have your highs.

It's hard. It is.

Some people make you seem
like you're-you're fragile.

But you're not fragile.

There's no reason not to
go out there

and do what you can
to make a living.

I have a lot of love

for my teammates,

Your job today is to collect

15 quarts of oil from the cars
that you see around you.

Now, the average car has between
five and eight quarts of oil.

The key is picking a car
that has a big engine, and then

cross your fingers that
there's a lot of oil in it.

You'll collect the oil
on your drip pan.

You gotta slide the drip pan
from underneath the car,

and then you've got to
precariously

balance this drip pan
with the oil, like this,

back here, to fill up 15 quarts.

Just to be clear, this is not
the most efficient way

to get oil from a car.

But being tough
is about using ingenuity

and getting the job done,

even if you don't have
the right tools.

Why are you wearing coveralls

Sarah?

'Cause, uh, my blueberry is
gonna become blackberry.

When I was a kid, my dad always

wanted me to learn
how to change oil.

that's hard to carry.

I've done oil changes
before and everything,

so I'm comfortable
with today's challenge.

All I need is a 14 or 18 bit

to take the plug out.

The strategy is pretty simple;
just keep trying to find

as much oil as possible.

I know how to find the plug
to drain the oil, so...

-I feel pretty confident.

You know, I'm not great
with hand tools.

I'm having trouble
with the socket wrenches.

The bolts are different sizes.

Some cars are foreign,
so they're metric.

The bolts are so tight,
I just cannot

for the life of me
get them loose.

Every car is different!

This is a tough challenge for me

because I don't know
what I'm doing.

But every day I go to work,

I learn something new,
and that's what I love about it.

So today I'm gonna
stay positive,

I'm gonna give it my best.

You had to pour at a steady pace and maneuver it a little bit

to make sure you didn't lose
a bunch of oil.

I see everyone else, I'm like,
"I'm beating everybody."

But one slipup
is gonna mess me up.

So I'm really just
trying to focus.

because I've been a cement mason for eight years now.

I don't have these moments
where I'm faced

I've never done before.

So I am learning a lot
about how I function

since you were the last

to finish recycling the oil,

it means you

you're at a pick-a-part,

and you know what's great
about a pick-a-part?

Nothing on any of these cars
goes to waste.

But the thing is,
here you have to use tools

to get the parts that you need.

That's your job today.

I need you to take three parts
off these engines.

The first part, the flywheel.

Helps to keep
your engine balanced.

Second part,
the exhaust manifold.

Collects all the exhaust
from the cylinders

and then that goes out into the
exhaust at the back of the car.

And the third part, oil pan.

-And what does the oil pan do?

It holds the oil?

-It holds the oil.

That wasn't a trick question.

-Sorry, I'm like "What..."
That's okay.

All the tools you need
to get the job done

are inside your tool kits.

The first person
to put all three parts

onto these workbenches

will be safe and stay
in the individual competition.

I have never worked
on a car before.

This isn't an area where I have any knowledge or confidence.

I know Iraida has more
experience with these tools.

So I'm not looking forward
to this one.

The first thing I'm thinking is,

All the bolts

and it's gonna be easier

I did panic a bit
in the beginning,

but I feel like
I'm learning as I'm going along.

When I do something
that I've never done before,

I get scared and I panic.

That little doubt kicks in,
and just sitting there,

just waiting to pop out

I get the oil pan mostly done

and I just sort of get stuck.

And I have gotten in my own way
