With teams tied at one apiece,

a shocking turn of events...

MERRYL:
It's a blow to us.

KEOGHAN:

must dig deeper...

Just got loaded, coming around.

SARAH:
This morning we got

to the van and...

we're down one guy?

CELI:
It's kind of really weird
and just...

feelings are all over the place.

Morning, everyone.

Interesting change of events.

Dirty Hands, as you know,

Tara injured her hand and,

unfortunately,
she cannot continue

in the competition.

She has not been
medically cleared.

IRAIDA:
It sucks to lose Tara.

She motivated us--
she says, "We've got this,

we're gonna do this,
we're gonna win," and, um,

you know, as a team,
we appreciated that, uh, but

injuries happen
and we understand that, too.

And you have to take
care of yourself, you know,

because you have to go back

to your real life
and your real job.

But, um, we miss her.

Savage Crew,

you're also down a teammate.

Mikey is no longer competing
on Tough As Nails.

He had to go home.

SCOTT:
We lost a teammate, but

Savage Crew is
a force to reckon with.

There's still a lot
of things ahead and

we have nothing
but confidence moving forward.

You're gonna have to do
extra work now that you're

only five against five.

I do have some good news.

The winning team

will still win

$12,000.

[cheering and applause]

That's $2,400

for each member

of the winning team.

Now it does seem symbolic

that as you reset

and start out as teams of five

that you're doing
something like this.

Your job today

is to build

a new road.

-Ooh!
-Oh!

-You with me, Swifty?
-Oh, yeah.

My foot is still injured,

you know, it's something
that's gonna take time.

But in this challenge,

I'm gonna lay it all out
for my team.

When the whistle blow,
I'm lining up and I'm ready.

KEOGHAN:
There's four million

miles of roads in America.

Think about that for a second.

You don't have to build
that much road.

-Hey, thank you.
-[laughter]

-Gonna make it tough...
-This is Tough As Nails.

Yeah, yeah.

When the work whistle blows,
you're gonna run

down to your workstations

and get to work.

First thing you're gonna do
is you're gonna jump into

one of those Ford Super Duty
trucks hooked up to a trailer,

then drive over
to the aggregate dump

where an operator
will fill up your trailer.

Then you're gonna drive
over to your team's

designated area
and dump your aggregate

out on the road.

Use a skip loader

to start levelling out
your road.

Make sure it's at least
six inches thick.

You don't want your road
to be too thin.

You need to lay down
and smooth out

four loads of aggregate.

And then you're gonna
use a roller to flatten

your road.

The first team
to build a 150 feet

of road will win

-that $12,000.
-[cheering, applause]

Hey, hey!

And, of course...

-the Badge of Honor.
-[murmured agreement]

So the team score's now
one apiece.

Go to your workstations,
strategize,

and then we'll get to work.

SCOTT: I remember at age 13,
my dad worked

for a geotechnical construction company, and I wanted to learn

how do you run
these awesome machines?

I would ask every operator
to teach me.

And before I could become
a superintendent,

I had to learn
all the equipment--

an excavator, a bulldozer,
uh, a rock truck,

anything, I'll run it.
I'll take Bad Boy.

-CELIA: Yeah.
-SCOTT: I want to use
the skip loader.

-The skip, the skip, okay.
-Yeah.

-Crew boss or crew boss?
-Crew boss...

-I'll do the crew boss.
-Okay.

SARAH:
It's the first time I'm gonna

be crew boss,
and I feel excited about it.

Swifty's gonna be handling
the F-350,

Celi's gonna be handling the
trailer, and Merryl's gonna be

handling the roller.

Liz is gonna be our foreman.

You're gonna be driving
the trailer and you're gonna

I'm gonna take

I don't have any prior
experience with operating

heavy equipment, but...

my son's birthday
was last month and I did buy him

a remote control tractor,
so... you know,

I do have a little bit
of experience, I guess,

in that regard... [laughs]

-Dirty, Dirty...
-ALL: Hands!

Dirty Hands chose me
as their crew boss.

I didn't volunteer myself.

But today is very hands-off
for the crew boss.

I'm going to be telling people
what to do.

"You do this, you do this."

Being a cement mason,
like, I mean,

if you pour concrete
to the wrong grade,

it's getting torn out, you know.

So I do sort of have
an eye for that.

-CELI: Yes!

All right, everybody
ready to get to work?

-On the work whistle...

SARAH:
Swifty, I thought

Now Savage Crew rolling out
to get their first load

of gravel. First come,

IRAIDA: High stakes.

CELI: Oh, it's only
one load at a time?

-Stop where he stopped.
-SWIFTY: See how
they loaded that?

CELI:
Yeah, it has to be
on the back end.

All right, you can jump out.

I'm gonna get out, then.

I'm gonna be working
with Patrick.

And I'm gonna be
working the lift.

KEOGHAN:
Iraida, giving direction

to Freight Train, who's driving.

Patrick, go forward.

I'm gonna have

a remote control that's gonna be

making the lift go up or down,

dumping the aggregate.

-A little more.
-KEOGHAN: Iraida getting ready

to dump the first load.

The idea is to try to get a nice

even surface of aggregate.

That's a great pour, there,

coming from Freight Train.

All of this has to be
levelled out.

Savage Crew

yet to lay out their aggregate.

Nice and slow, Swifty.

I have this control,
and I press up.

It was just
like pressing a button

and lifting a patient up,
so it was the same concept.

Swifty...

-dump exactly in the middle.
-Okay.

KEOGHAN:
Meanwhile here comes Scott
in the skip loader.

SCOTT:
As fast as you guys
can get me dirt,

I want it in just one pile,
I'll worry about the spreading.

Very little, Swift.

All right, Celi.

CELI:
There it goes.

SCOTT:
Yes!

SCOTT:
I wanted it piled up

in one certain spot so that when

you pushed it and spread it out,

I could control the low spot.

Beautiful.

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands already

heading back to pick up
their second load of gravel,

as Zeus moves forward

to level out
their first load on the road.

-Okay, there.
-Let me know

-when I'm in front of the pile.
-Okay.

We have, like, a hump...

here.

I'm not used to being
in a leadership role.

I always say at work,
"I never want to be in charge."

Like, I like just being told
what to do, put my head down,

do it, but I-I'm trying
to step into that role.

Okay, bring it further back

ZEUS:
We're off to an early lead and

it's gonna come down
to communication, essentially.

The start of the hump is,
like, right here.

I'm gonna use my back end, then.

I'm listening to Liz--
she has the most

-experience with grading.

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands doing a good job.

Pretty impressive driving
from Zeus and this road

is looking pretty smooth so far.

We're on our way back.

Okay, I'm-a get out the way.
I'm-a get out the way.

IRAIDA:
Liz...

tell me where to stop.

Freight Train rolling in here

-with another load of aggregate.
-LIZ: Stop, stop, stop.

KEOGHAN: So far, Savage Crew

still trying to finish
levelling out their first load.

-SARAH: There you go.
-KEOGHAN: Scott using
the back blade

to pull that aggregate forward.

Drop it... pull off,
here they come.

Our strategy is
to keep everything

moving forward,
kind of like an assembly line.

All right, Swifty, come on right
through the middle, Swifty.

You know it has to be
grade and level,

and at work I'm good at checking
pipes, if they're level.

Stop, stop, stop.

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands still ahead.

LIZ:
Okay, Patrick, go.

KEOGHAN:
Pouring their second load.

Two to go.

They're going with the spread.

Celi running back with the
controls now for Savage Crew.

They've got
some catching up to do.

-All right, all right, go
with it, Swifty.
-Nope, hey, you know what?

All right, when you drop it,
move forward with the truck.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew changing
their technique.

They started off
with one big clump of aggregate,

now they're trying
to spread it out as they go.

SCOTT [chuckles]:
Our strategy didn't
really go that well.

Things kind of changed
there in the middle.

Little bit more, pull them up.

I wanted it to be piled up
in one certain spot,

but you have to learn
on the fly,

you have to make adjustments.

Good, good, good.

ANGEL:
Move the truck, move the truck.

KEOGHAN: Angel, going back
to the start of the road

-to even things out.
-LIZ: Iraida,

Patrick? Go get some more...

Keep going down, keep going

-IRAIDA: We have a problem.
-PATRICK: Talk to me, Iraida.

ZEUS:
Hey, the dump's not going down!

-Let's go.
They're right behind us!

KEOGHAN:
Scott moving forward
on his road.

Savage Crew is using
the opportunity to catch up,

as they inch ahead
of Dirty Hands.

-LIZ: Iraida!

ZEUS:

We have a problem.
It's not going down.

ZEUS:
Behind the wheel, it's stuck.

Iraida starts working
the remote,

and the cable's
underneath the tire.

-The cord.
-Patrick, go-- back up a little.

KEOGHAN:
Oh, after taking an early lead,

Dirty Hands now at a standstill.

SARAH:
All right, go with it, Swifty.

The load's done, we can
probably get ahead of them.

Savage Crew is using
the opportunity to catch up.

PATRICK:
What's going on there?

-Look.
-Good job, good job.

ZEUS: Get it down
and get it out of here.

KEOGHAN:
That's a mistake that's gonna
cost Dirty Hands.

KEOGHAN:
Ooh, Swifty sneaking in front

of Freight Train
for the third load of aggregate.

-PATRICK: No, wrong way.
-[horn honks]

KEOGHAN:
Remember, first come,
first serve down there.

There's only one loader.

ZEUS:
We were in front,

and because of that
little error,

we're behind now.

KEOGHAN:
Scott moving forward,

trying to level out
their second load.

MERRYL: I'm on the roller,
and I'm chomping at the bit

a little bit, 'cause I'm like,

"Sarah, hey,
do you want me to go now?"

SARAH:
Merryl, I'm gonna have him
go for two more loads,

and then I'm-a have you come in.

Once the gravel pile's in play,

Scott's gonna come
right up behind them.

-MERRYL: Back up.
-I didn't want to put Merryl

into play until we had
a couple long sections in.

All right, we just got loaded,
coming around.

SARAH:
As long as we can keep
that gravel coming,

we're good to go.

KEOGHAN: Smoother surface
coming from Savage Crew.

How's my claw? How's my claw?

Little bit more.

LIZ:
No, but we need to bring
that back, though.

-D-Drop it. Okay...
-Angel, Angel.

I saw that they weren't
grading it the right way.

But I wasn't running the job,
so I was really trying

to, like, collaborate with Liz.

-ZEUS: How's that?
-Uh, little bit more?

I don't think we should do that.

LIZ:
I'm trying to direct Zeus,

and Angel is kind of in my ear,

like, this little mosquito
flying and buzzing around.

Liz, come here. Drop-drop this.

Hold on, we're gonna--
Let's just do the back

and see how it looks? Okay.

He wants to do something,
but there's nothing,

there's nothing for him
to do yet.

-Angel, please let me do my job.
-ANGEL: Okay.

ANGEL:

LIZ:

'cause we're low back here.

KEOGHAN:
Savage Crew now coming back
with their third load.

SARAH:
Keep going a little bit...

-SWIFTY: I got you.

Sarah, she was a great foreman.

And she really did a great job
with communication.

SARAH:

Go up a little bit.

I'm fine with communicating
with people,

I'm fine with telling people
where to go and stuff.

KEOGHAN:

KEOGHAN: As Freight Train
comes driving in now

with the third load
for Dirty Hands.

-LIZ: Keep going.
-PATRICK: We fell behind.

A little bit of panic
may be setting in,

but we just kept on rolling.

Talk to me on the move.

-Slowly, slowly.
-LIZ: Okay, yeah.

KEOGHAN: Dirty Hands
dumping their third load,

-trying to catch up.
-LIZ: Great. Awesome, you guys.

KEOGHAN: Savage Crew
with a very impressive

piece of road so far.

Scott really taking his time
as he levels out the road base.

SCOTT:
All that that's gathered
in there, Sarah,

will all naturally fall out.

SARAH:
All right.

You look over and you see
Dirty Hands, they're rushing.

LIZ:
Up, up, up, up,
up, up, up, up, up now.

-Liz, check my back end.
-Up a little.

-We don't want to drag it
too low.
-Keep in mind

when Angel jumps on this,

he's gonna flatten this thing
out and make it look nice,

-all right?
-Yeah, gotcha.

SARAH:
Swifty, when you get up here,

-just wait for him.
-SWIFTY: Copy.

CELI:
We're on our way back.

-We'll be there
in probably a minute or two.
-SARAH: Okay.

SARAH: We've had to fix up
a couple edges,

but other than that, our road is looking really nice.

Scott, he can come
to my house and build

my driveway if he wants to.

I'm just gonna drag this

and then I'm gonna move
out of the way.

SWIFTY:
Go ahead, Scott, go ahead.

We're on our way back, Liz.

KEOGHAN:
Can Dirty Hands catch up?

They are very close
at this point.

We can wait
if you want us to wait.

LIZ:
No, just drive over it.
Go, go, go.

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands right on
the heels of Savage Crew,

as both teams pour their fourth

and final load of aggregate.

Almost at exactly the same time.

A nice spread coming
from Swifty.

That's a good pour also
coming from Dirty Hands.

-Start going down.
-Once this final load
of aggregate

is dumped and spread,
it's down to who

can be the first to flatten
their road with the roller.

Pretty even at this point.

-Am I clear to...
-SARAH: Come on and do
a little bit off the front.

Oh, and here comes Merryl.

Feels like an earthquake
as Merryl brings out the roller.

MERRYL:
As I'm riding the roller,

it's just a little
squirrely at first,

but I've been
in mechanical devices

like aircraft, so you just have

to be very smooth
on the controls.

Look at Merryl go.
This is a woman

who knows how to fly
a U-2 plane.

MERRYL:
I put the roller up to max,

and we're still...
[imitates whirring]

We're maybe doing
three miles an hour.

[steady beeping]

LIZ:
Angel, I think we're almost
ready for-- to flatten out

-and see how it looks.
-ANGEL: All right.

KEOGHAN:
And Angel's gone back
to get the roller.

Coordinated effort
from Savage Crew.

They want this win.

SARAH: All right, Merryl,
Scott's gonna turn around

and smooth all this out.

LIZ: I look over at their road
and realize

that I'm being way too much
of a perfectionist.

We're just gonna keep doing it,
keep working it towards the end.

At that point,
we just bring on Angel.

Let's flatten this out,
let's do it.

So stop here.

This is a much better effort
from Dirty Hands.

Angel has rolled up

Merryl, another 30 feet forward.

SWIFTY:

I was impressed with, um,
Merryl running that roller.

She did a good job,
being her first time, man.

KEOGHAN:
Scott running
to the beginning of the road.

It all comes down to rolling.

And Merryl is rolling ahead.

This ain't definitely
no jet right now.

ANGEL:

LIZ:

KEOGHAN:
Dirty Hands desperately
trying to catch up.

-ANGEL: Guys, come on!
-Great driving coming
from Angel,

-MERRYL: Let's go!

KEOGHAN:
Merryl smoothing out
the last feet.

And they are showing Dirty Hands

they want to win
this team competition.

-LIZ: Go forward, go forward.

Merryl's getting
to the end of the road now.

It's looking good.

-SWIFTY: We got it, we got it.
-SARAH: All right, go
all the way.

Savage Crew
get their road built.

SCOTT:
Go park. Merryl, go park.

Merryl's going to park
the roller,

and we all go sprinting
towards the van.

You start
to celebrate a little bit.

-Let's go!
-IRAIDA: Come on, move,

they're picking up their cones.

Angel, go,
please don't waste no time.

-LIZ: I'm sorry, guys.
-SWIFTY: Yeah!

SCOTT:
We get to drive across
the road we just built.

-It's a good feeling.
-CELI: It's Savage time!

I give it up to the workers
out there

who are doing this job.

And when I go over a road
from now on,

I'll just always roll down
my window and say,

"I love you guys."
They'll be like... [laughs]

I'm kind of, like, pissed off

and a little down about losing,

but, you know,
everybody worked really hard

and I'm really proud of my team.

In concrete,
grade is really important.

So you were being
maybe a little too fussy.

-She's our, uh...
-Maybe a little too--
maybe a little...

-s-she's our perfectionist.
-...too meticulous. Yeah, yeah.

I take responsibility
for our loss,

and I'm disappointed.

What do you guys

If it's something like
operating equipment...

If we are operating,
and you are in there,

the main thing
is to just stay relaxed,

'cause once you feel
that pressure kick,

you're gonna be like,
"Oh, whoa, whoa."

-You know what I mean?
-LIZ: Yeah. That could be
my downfall.

I mean, I love putting my head
down and getting in the zone.

But when it comes to...

I can get a little panicked.

Sometimes I have
a lack of confidence

when it comes to things
I haven't done before.

Like, I don't
always believe in myself.

There's a lot of situations
where I might step back

and let somebody else come in,

where, in individual competition
that-that's not an option.

I have to-- It's me. It's on me.

ZEUS:
When I was in high school,
I was a good athlete,

just living the life.

As soon as I went to college,
there were guys

three times my size
that could run just as fast.

-Instead of being a big fish
in the pond, you're the...
-Yeah.

-The little-- the minnow
in the ocean.
-Yeah.

ZEUS:
In high school, I was
an All-Star running back,

and I had that mindset,
to where I was always the best.

I got recruited to play
at the Naval Academy,

and I was instantly humbled.

I wasn't the best anymore.

I was just a number.

That was the most
humbling experience of my life,

and it created that doubt
you feel,

but getting over it
and finding myself a little more

helped me to become
a stronger person.

LIZ:
Sometimes I feel like
I'm the only one

who has these self-doubts,
so it's good to hear this guy

who's just this big muscly...
stud, like... [laughs]

say that sometimes,
you know, he's-he's been

in those situations, too.

MERRYL: So today, we'll have
fun, and we'll just work hard

-and...
-Stay focused.

Yeah, I don't want
to go into overtime.

And I definitely don't
no nother overtime.

-I know you don't.
-MERRYL: I know you don't.

MERRYL:
Swifty, I'm gonna go there.

I don't mean this
in any bad way, but...

I didn't want any brothers
or sisters to be the first

-to be eliminated.
-[laughter]

-I just didn't.
-CELI: As a Black person,

-you think that.
-I just didn't,
as a Black person.

-SCOTT: Yeah-- okay.
-Like, yeah.

-Yeah, I didn't-- see..
-CELI: Sorry, no offense, Scott.

No, I don't take offense,
it's, it's good to hear

that point of view, 'cause I
wouldn't even have thought that.

-CELI: I was like,
"Not my brother."
-As a, as a Black person,

-I was like...
-Yeah, I immediately
noticed that

-I was the one representing...
-CELI: I was like,
"Not my Swifty.

-...the-the Black male.
-My-my Black brother."

I carry that burden, like, oh...

I-I feel pressure

being the only Black man, yeah.

It's nothing new. I feel that pressure every day.

that I cross my T's
and dot my I's, so...

It's another day for me.

Being, you know, Black
and being in that spotlight,

you-you just,
you just can't stop, so...

-You can't drop the ball.
-That-- you just, you can't.

You're on a big platform.

My gosh, like, that's so--
that's so much--

it's so much pressure
on you guys

that I wouldn't even have
thought about.

-You know? That's...
-Yeah, yeah.

It's a lot of pressure
being Black sometimes-- It is.

MERRYL:
As a Black female working

in a male-dominant profession,

sometimes it's so doggone
exhausting.

There's been times
I'm sitting around the table

where no one looks like me.

Every word that I say,
if I make a mistake,

I know I'm screwing it up
for the next person

who looks like me
to sit at the table.

So I put a lot of pressure
on myself

to perform the best every time.

SCOTT: I-I didn't even think about it,

but I'm so proud to have, like,
three strong, Black teammates

that I love, and I'm-- like,
you're family now, to me.

-Like, it makes me so...
-Aw...

-Like, I-I got chills,
I, like...
-[chuckles]

CELI:
And I feel comfortable
talking about being Black

-in front of you guys,
because sometimes...
-MERRYL: Yeah.

...it's not comfortable,
talking about being Black

-in front of...
-SCOTT: Okay.

-MERRYL: No, it...
-White people.

Yeah. Because some white people
just don't understand.

-You know?
-Sure, sure. Well, and we don't.

To be honest, like,
being a-a white man from Utah,

I-I don't understand fully

Tough As Nailschallenge.

As you see behind you,
there is a course.

A bulldozer course.

Today, you are going to be
racing in pairs, on the clock,

to see who is the best
bulldozer operator.

They're amazing machines,

very difficult to control
and to drive.

You're gonna use your bulldozer
to push one of these large tires

around the slalom course
as fast as you possibly can.

As always onTough As Nails,
you never want to finish last.

It's a pride thing, and also,
there's a lot on the line.

$200,000 and an all-new
Ford F-150 truck.

Couple of pointers
on driving the bulldozers.

There's two control sticks.

Push the left one forward
to go forward,

pull it back to go in reverse.
Then left to go left,

and right to go right.

Use the right controller to lift your blade up and down,

Very simple controls.

The hard part
is coordinating everything.

Remember, it's about the time.

So you might go against
somebody who is super quick,

but you might end up with
the second fastest time, too.

You're going against the clock.

As an added incentive today,

we want to make this
competitive.

So, the person with
the fastest overall time

will win a big advantage

in the next
individual competition.

Anybody driven
a bulldozer before?

so it's in my world now, Merryl.

MERRYL:

on his own playground

with his own equipment,

KEOGHAN:

KEOGHAN:
Rolling his tire forward.

Merryl's doing very well so far,

getting into the first turn.

SCOTT:
I want to put my money
where my mouth is.

I don't want to be
the one that's like,

"I'm the best at this,
I'm so good at running this,"

and then come in last place.

I didn't want to do that.

KEOGHAN:
Scott coming down to the far end
in under a minute!

SCOTT: I look over and I notice Merryl's not far behind me,

and I'm like, "How is she
already this good at this?"

KEOGHAN:
Look at the control she's got.

That's all right,
let's go, Merryl!

MERRYL:
It's just like flying
an aircraft.

Everything else, you shut out.

Whatever drama
you have in your life,

you just close that off,

and you just focus
on the task at hand.

felt like a trim button
on an aircraft.

KEOGHAN:

I totaled my car

Meanwhile, Zeus

ZEUS:
I've never driven
a bulldozer before,

but I picked it up pretty fast.

There's a lot of buttons,
and it's the same thing

as all the video gaming
experience I have,

which is quite a lot.

KEOGHAN: Zeus really adapting
very, very quickly.

All Zeus has to do now
is get across the finish line

to stop the clock.

-MERRYL: Good job, Zeus!
-[applause]

KEOGHAN:
Ready to stop the clock,
and stop the clock for Zeus!

Celi at the other end

and she's making a turn.

SWIFTY:

SARAH:
Zeus got through fairly quick.

Celi kept getting

her blade stuck in the ground.

SCOTT:
Get out of the dirt!

Celi, you're digging
your blade in.

Straighten up your blade.

And apparently,
I was honking the horn.

-SCOTT: All right,

KEOGHAN:

So now we're reaching
the end, and of course,

that's when I get
the hang of it.

driving a regular vehicle,

how to drive

a bulldozer in three minutes?

And I think I did pretty good.

I'm trying to get it
to move a certain way

and I just start
getting frustrated.

I do struggle
with confidence sometimes.

I mean, there are definitely
moments when it was like...

Oh, sorry.

I don't know.

When it comes
to learning something new,

I feel like I'm a slow learner, and I just get in that head of,

"I'm not gonna be good at this,

maybe I'm not smart enough
to figure this out," like...

[sniffles]
When I was growing up,

I wasn't always
the best student.

I just got a lot of feedback
that maybe

I was lazy,
I was not trying hard enough,

and now, as an adult, I know those things aren't true,

but I think those are
feelings of inadequacy

that I still battle. [sniffles]

KEOGHAN: Knuckles has not
gone anywhere

for the last four minutes.

She's stuck in this position.

She's digging up the ground.

and being bad at it,

like, I-I tend to avoid things
that I'm bad at.

LIZ: The controls are really tricky.

I'm jerking.
There's no smooth motion.

I got a background in racing,

so I started out young
with go-karts,

and I moved up
to four-cylinders.

I spent a lot of time
behind a wheel.

There's a lot of pressure
on me today,

especially that I race cars

and I drive for a living.

So I'm hoping I don't let
everybody down.

SARAH:
Come on, Freight Train!
Let's go!

KEOGHAN:
We've got a tight race
on our hands.

MERRYL:
Oh, man!

[overlapping cheering]

-MERRYL: Freight Train! Whoa!
-SARAH: There you go!

KEOGHAN:
Swifty is flying.

But Freight Train,

the whole time.

I've run, like, scissor lifts
and stuff like that,

but I've never operated
this kind of machinery before.

So I start moving forward

and realize that this thing
is nothing like a car.
