When I first started,

they looked at me like
I wasn't going to make it.

But I proved them wrong.

No one's going to tell me
what I can and cannot do.

We want to find out
who is the toughest of them all.

KEOGHAN:
These seasoned professionals

This is Tough As Nails.

You're the toughest workers in
America, and we want to find out

who is the toughest of them all.

-Who's that going to be?

KEOGHAN:
There will be only

one Tough As Nailswinner.

But... what makes
this competition different?

Even if you punch out of
the individual competition,

you're all going to be competing
in a team competition,

which continues right
to the end of the season.

And in this competition,

working with your team,

So introduce yourselves

what you do for a living.

I'm a BAC Local 1 bricklayer
out of New York City,

and my nickname
is "Mikey Eyebrows."

[Keoghan laughs]

Oh, no.

KEOGHAN:
Do you do it yourself?

No, no. I get them done.

-[laughter]
-My name is Swifty.

Second generation
USW steelworker Local 1011.

I'm a mechanical pipe welder,

-so I deal with a lot of steel,
too.
-My name is Cyril.

I'm a power line technician.

I'm from Hawaii,
and they call me Zeus.

I got the power.

[laughter]

I fix the tracks where
the Metro Rail runs.

We have to be very careful.

My name is Celi.
I'm a registered nurse,

and I'm a travel nurse.

I worked on a COVID-19 unit.

-Thank you.
-SCOTT: Wow.

KEOGHAN:
Thank you for doing that.

My name is Liz.
I go by "Knuckles,"

and I'm a union cement mason.

My name is Angel.

I manage construction sites

that have to do with
waterproofing.

I'm Scott.
I'm 40-- it's the new 20.

[laughter]

I'm in
the geotechnical industry.

I'm a superintendent,
been in it 15 years.

I'm Tara. I'm 38.
I'm a merchant mariner.

My name is Patrick.
I'm from the suburbs of Philly.

I'm a package delivery driver,

and my nickname
is "Freight Train."

[laughter]

-LIZ: Thanks for bringing
my wine.
-PATRICK: Yes.

-[laughter]
-KEOGHAN: Yeah.

And we have the "Dragon Lady"

sitting on the back
of the truck.

My name is, uh, Merryl.
I'm 49 years old.

I'm a retired Air Force colonel.

My last aircraft was
the U-2Dragon Lady.

I'm the first and only black
woman to fly the aircraft.

MIKEY:
All right!

KEOGHAN:
We are honored to have you here.

-Thank you for your service.
-[applauding]

All right. Well, listen.

The first thing
we're going to do

is we're going to pick
two teams of six.

And we're going to do that

by having you compete
in your first job.

-[group reacts]
-[clapping]

The first two of you
to finish the job

will get the power

to pick our two teams of six.

The key to any good team

is having a solid foundation.

And that's what
you're going to build today.

When the work whistle blows,

grab a sledgehammer,

and start crushing rocks.

Then you're going
to sift enough aggregate

to tip a set of scales.

After you've done that,
you'll take aggregate

sand, cement, some water,

mix it all up,

and then pour the concrete into

one of those concrete forms.

The first two of you
to level out your concrete,

will be picking
our two teams of six.

So there's a lot on the line.

Is everybody ready
to get to work?

-[cheering]
-Let's go!

Follow me!

My mother used to drive buses
for the mentally challenged.

And she couldn't afford
a babysitter,

so she took me and my sister
with her to work,

and that's when I learned
that I had to work hard.

KEOGHAN:
Okay.

Time to get the job done.

When you hear
the work whistle blow,

let's make some concrete.

-[work whistle blows]
-CELI: Let's go, baby!

KEOGHAN:
Off to a flying start.

Mikey Eyebrows smashing
the hell out of this thing.

MIKEY:
Coming out the gate,
I went hard.

My uncle Mark owned his own

concrete business, so I was
around concrete my whole life.

So the love
that I have for concrete

just goes beyond words.

-[grunting]
-KEOGHAN: Tara

already loading
her aggregate into her sift.

CELI:
I don't even know

what these words mean.
What is "aggregate"?

Get it!

KEOGHAN:
Good technique from Liz.

Powerful blows.

Got a lot of leverage.
Six foot seven.

I love construction because
my dad loves construction.

I saw my dad be very proud

to finish a job,
to be good at what he does,

and I wanted to do
the same thing.

KEOGHAN:
Angel's steady,
working away here.

This is all about endurance,
good technique.

And Liz has got
fantastic technique.

Look how far ahead she is.

Low, steady, powerful blows
coming from Swifty.

SWIFTY:
Man, it's rough,
it's hot, but I'm from

the steel mill.
I stand next to

2,700 hundred degrees
of molten iron every day.

So nothing is stopping me.

Merryl's got a lot of power
coming through the sledgehammer.

MERRYL:
My strategy is

I'm going to be slow and steady.

Take a deep breath.
Marathon, not a sprint.

Let's do this.

Who's got the mental grit
to get the job done first?

TARA:
My strategy is just to grab

stuff that's thinner.

It's going
to be easier to break.

KEOGHAN: Iraida knows how
to use a sledgehammer,

she uses one at work
all the time.

Sarah's got endurance.
We know that.

I've never taken a week off.

I've never taken vacation.

If you don't put in the work,
you're not going to succeed

or get what you want.

-[banging]
-KEOGHAN: Here we go!

Liz the first
to finish crushing her rocks.

She has tipped the scale.

She's moving on
to making concrete.

CELI:
Let's go, crew!

LIZ: I love physical work, and uh...

moms are some of
the toughest people out there.

I mean,
I worked through my pregnancy.

I remember the day
it was 35 degrees,

and I was 35 weeks pregnant.

But there's still people,
this day and age,

who think that women
don't belong in the trades.

And I'm just excited to bring itand kind of prove people wrong.

KEOGHAN:
Angel, Iraida, Sarah and Mikey,

right behind.

But here's Mikey Eyebrows
moving forward.

MIKEY: I knew I had to pick up
the pace a little bit

'cause in the back
of my mind I knew--

Liz? She's amazing,
and she knows

how to mix concrete very well.

Wow!

KEOGHAN:
Wheelbarrow getting
slightly tippy there.

MIKEY:
Come on!

KEOGHAN:
Liz! Mixing it together.

And now we have
Sarah moving forward.

Sarah's scales tipped.

And Iraida has also
tipped her scales.

She's moving on
to making her concrete.

IRAIDA:
Everything that I am today
is because of my mother.

I was born in Venezuela,
and when I was five years old,

my mom decided
to take an adventure

and say, "We're going to go to
the United States of America."

She worked hard.
Sometimes she had three jobs.

And she taught me

if I keep working hard,

I know that I'm going
to keep getting blessed.

KEOGHAN:
Angel has tipped his scales.

-Yes.
-He's now making his concrete.

ANGEL:
My motivation is my son.

He's five years old.

He's my everything.

I live in Miami,
and my son lives in Chicago.

There's times that I don't even
have money to travel,

but I figure it out.
That's why I do side jobs.

I want to move closer to him.

Like, that's why I work hard.
He motivates me to do good.

There goes Tara moving forward.

And now Scott moving forward.

And Liz with the first
shovelfuls into her form.

Mikey Eyebrows not far behind

as he starts filling up
his form.

Right now you've got
to give the lead to Liz.

Tara putting in
her first pour...

just as Zeus tips his scale

and moves on to making concrete.

And Swifty
gets his scale tipped,

closely followed by Merryl.

-[Celi whoops]
-KEOGHAN: Celi still battling on

and the only one
still crushing rocks.

And Freight Train getting

his first load of concrete
into the form.

Remember: the first two
to get the job done

get the power to pick a team.

[grunting]

Does Mikey Eyebrows have
the stamina to keep on going?

[grunting]

Liz already filled up
a quarter of her form.

[grunts]

I felt like I was dying.

I had to stop for a second.

At that time,
I'm thinking just "water."

I was ready to stick my head
in that barrel.

[grunting]

Mikey Eyebrows, don't stop.

-Let's go, let's go.
-[Mikey pants]

KEOGHAN:
Remember.

The first two to mix enough
concrete to fill their forms

get to pick a team.

Mikey Eyebrows, don't stop.
Let's go, let's go.

-Liz, how are you doing?
-LIZ: All good.

KEOGHAN:
In the lead,
a little ahead of Mikey,

but it is going to be
a close finish.

There's no quitting anyone here.

That uniform doesn't look quite
as crisp as it did at the start.

Swifty has made up a huge amount
of time with his mix.

And Zeus also wants the power
to pick a team.

This is when
that mental toughness kicks in.

-Right, Celi?
I know you got this.
-CELI: Yes, sir.

KEOGHAN:
And here's Liz
with another huge pour.

Looks like she only needs
one more to get the job done.

And Sarah-- maybe only
one pour left for her.

There you go!

Celi tips the scales,
moving on to the concrete.

[clapping]
Beautiful job. Beautiful job.

CELI:
My body was shutting down.

It was long, hard, and tiring,
and that's what I do every day

working 12-hour shifts.

This could be
the final pour for Liz.

Doesn't want to spill it
out of the concrete form.

Mikey mixing up what should be
his last batch of concrete.

Come on, Liz.
You're just seconds away now.

Mikey is mixing,

but once Liz gets
that concrete form full,

all she has to do then
is just smooth it out.

Once it's smooth,
the job is done.

Mikey coming back with a load.

Will it be enough
to catch up to Liz?

[Mikey panting]

Mikey Eyebrows
just seconds behind.

It looks like Knuckles
is going to get the win.

Oh!

She's come up short.

Not enough concrete
to get the job done.

Has Mikey made enough

-and make more?
-MIKEY: Ah!

-Mikey Eyebrows gets the win.
-Yeah!

MIKEY:
Feeling great right now.

I get to decide
who's on my team,

and that's really important.

Beautiful job.

MIKEY:
These team members

are going to become
like my union.

Local 1 BAC saved my life.

I was at a very dark place
in my life at one time.

And they accepted me.
They didn't judge me.

And I am forever grateful
for that.

Liz with a final
mix of concrete.

I was, uh,

SARAH:
I feel good

Especially behind those two

who, you know,
they work with cement.

Well, I struggled on that.

I would take you on
as my apprentice on the job.

-I would.

Flying U-2s, you can wear
yourself out in a heartbeat.

You have to be very methodical

in how much energy
you're going to use,

so I'm going to be
slow and steady,

but I've got to prove
to those team captains

that I am a huge asset
to the team.

SCOTT:

KEOGHAN:
All right.
Getting it done, Scott.

-Bring it on over.

KEOGHAN:
Angel finishing up the job.

-MIKEY: Boy, Angel, attaboy.

KEOGHAN:
And there goes Tara.

TARA:
I finished in sixth.

I didn't do half bad.

I did half bad.

Just before half bad. [laughs]

KEOGHAN:
Swifty's got the job done.

Bring it over, Swifty.

-SCOTT: Way to go, Swifty!

MIKEY:
Attaboy.

SWIFTY:
It bummed me out.

If you're not first,
you're last.

But I never try
to make an excuse.

My basketball coach told me,
"Excuse is like

"a butt--
everybody's got one.

Get off your butt,
and go get it if you want it."

KEOGHAN:
All right, Zeus.

-[whoops]
-KEOGHAN: Iraida, nicely done!

-Yeah!

Finishing the job,

Celi might not be at the top

of every competition,

but she has the heart,

and that's what you need
on a team.

If you have heart in your team,

everybody else
is just going to ride that.

who have dealt with so much
mental pressure in their lives.

Celi is somebody who holds

a person's hand
when they're dying.

Can you imagine
the mental fortitude

that it takes to do that?

but there's no doubt
they're tough.

I realized there were

And I'm like,

KEOGHAN:
I hope you've got

Savage Crew legacy.

KEOGHAN:

I learned how to be tough

from being a boxer.

That's another reason why,

when I got into
the construction field,

I was like,
"This is definitely for me."

If you use your knowledge
and experience,

you can win the fight,

and that's how I see it
every time I walk

into a construction site.

A 12-inch pipe

and we're not afraid

But I can't underestimate them.

SCOTT: For the people who it isn't a normal day of work for,

that's amazing,
what you did today,

and I respect you guys

so much for finishing.
I could not go be a nurse.

I could not be a pilot.

Whoa, that's awesome.

The steel industry in my area

is the big ticket, you know?

From East Chicago, Indiana.

What most people would call
the worst place on Earth, man.

A lot of bad things
happen there.

Just because it's the worst
place on Earth to most,

it's the best place
on Earth to me because

it made me who I am.

I've never been afforded
the luxury of quitting.

I was 22 when I lost my ma.

So I had to look out for
my little brother and sister.

I couldn't quit then.

Tough is someone that's
determined to do better in life.

Tough is... Tough is Swifty.

Once I got my time in,

I became an official part

of the biggest union
in the United States, the USW.

-Yeah, that's right.
-And within three years,

I went from
a labor grade 1 shoveler,

to a senior operator
commanding the whole squad.

-SCOTT: Hey!
-SWIFTY: So, you know...

-MIKEY: Sarah? Sarah?
-Yeah?

How long you been welding?

Uh, only two years.

-Two years?
-MERRYL: Only?

Yup. I was a police officer
for ten years.

-MERRYL: Wow.
-SARAH: Yeah, my dad

did a little welding,
my mom's done

a little welding
in art and stuff,

and I was like, "You know what?

I'm going to get
my certifications."

-Wow.
-MIKEY: I'm going
to be honest with you guys.

I live paycheck to paycheck.
I've got four kids.

I live in a two-bedroom
apartment in Staten Island.

-And I need a house.
-CELI: Let's go, Mikey.

And I need a house.

That's what I'm doing this for,
guys.

And when I talk about that,
I get emotional.

-CELI: Of course.
-Because my kids are my life.

-[sniffles]
-CELI: Mikey...

You're going
to make them proud, Mikey.

You've made them proud already.

I think we have the skills
to really push forward.

I love doing everything

Both sides of my family have

roots back to the sea.

It doesn't feel like work.

It just feels
where I'm supposed to be.

I love facing adversity and
seeing if I can overcome it.

Because I'm going to.
I might fail once or twice,

but it's not going to stop me.

I've worked in the shipyard--
welding, grinding, pipe fitting.

I was one
of the lead carpenters.

-ZEUS: Oh, cool.
-I knew you were
my jack of all trades.

You've got to be on a boat.

So the first thing
I'm thinking is, "Oh, crap.

It didn't get nailed in.

the end, and we'll be good.

Luckily, it was just that
we had missed a couple of spots

nailing in the header,
then we were able

to get the third wall
taken care of.

from different ends,

to mess us up a little.

I really haven't looked at

so you kind of have
to mirror things in your head,

but we're trying our best here.

with my crew and being there

for them when they need me.

I'm going to the plans,
trying to memorize

the measurements, running back, making sure everybody is
