The things I dream up in my head

would just take me so long.

- What I've been showing the judges more recently

hasn't impressed them enough to be on top,

so I definitely feel a lot of pressure.

My heart is still pounding. - Yeah.

I think that Tessa has a few different sides

of her personality, and I think

she can come off as fake sometimes,

and I think that that is really getting

to some of the other people here.

There is only one more challenge standing in the way

I can't believe I made the final five.

I came two years ago to United States

with no money in my pockets, trying to change my life,

and I'm so close to go to the end.

I just wanna push myself, and I'm gonna give it all.

I grew up watching "Project Runway."

I remember vividly Christian's season,

and to go this far, I just got chills thinking about it.

- One of you will take home over a quarter of a million dollars

supplied by Pilot FriXion Erasable Pens,

$50,000 to set up your own design studio,

courtesy of Bluprint, and a priceless mentorship

from the CFDA.

This is high stakes.

Designers are now combining fashion

with art and architecture,

pop culture, to create full experiences

for their fashion shows, which leads me to your challenge.

We want each of you to create your version

of an experiential fashion show within these rooms.

- Ooh, man.

- Create a look to show us who you are as a designer.

Make it bigger and bolder than anything we've seen from you.

- Oh. - There will be over 100

industry insiders walking through your rooms

and experiencing the show.

This will determine who will make the final four

to create their collection and present it

to the fashion industry.

- Is it feeling real? - Yeah.

- Each of you will be able to pick your model.

Sebastian, you won the last challenge,

so you pick first.

- Great. This is a 2-day challenge.

You'll work with a creative consultant

to create your room with your guidance.

After you're done, you guys will head to Mood

and meet Christian, where you'll have $500

to buy your supplies... - Wow.

- ...and bring your vision to life.

- I myself have done tons of experimental fashion shows.

I luckily had the platform during my club years

at this nightclub called Mother.

They would hire me out to do

an interactive experimental performance.

So I'm good for this.

- Hello, hello.

- [ gasps ] Hi! - Oh, my God. You're so cute.

- Hi. - Hi, Tessa.

- I want to create a rococo room

that is slowly turning into a forest.

- Okay.

- Rococo was just this really Baroque affluent style.

It was like a hyper-feminized aesthetic

that I find very inspiring.

I would like the floor to be, like, mossy

and mound into the center.

- Ah. - 'Cause I want my model

to be standing in the center drinking tea.

- Okay.

- I wanna, um, continue, um, with this idea

of Baltimore blooming or Maryland blooming.

- Well, you know what's one of the interesting places

that you see flowers that people don't think about,

are in, like, uh, walls. - Mm-hmm.

- When they're, like, literally breaking through.

- Yeah!

Every time I create something that's connected to Baltimore,

it gets me on the top.

Baltimore's my roots,

and every time I reference back to Baltimore,

it brings something out of me that makes me push harder.

- Okay.

- I have this whole concept of, like,

they're in their dressing room being dressed

by robotic hands.

- It makes me think of "The Jetsons," you know?

Like, you would go down the conveyor belt,

and they would spray your hair. - Exactly.

- And she would, like, put her dresses on.

- The more that you can have your guests interact

with the space, the better.

That's what's gonna really make it pop.

- I feel like we're kinda, like, getting there.

- My mom's a ceramicist. - Mm-hmm.

- So I'm really wanting to recreate

half ceramic studio/ art installation.

The judges have told me, you know,

I need to show more passion.

And my best looks in this competition

have all been inspired by my upbringing,

so I think creating a room and a space

where I really lean into my roots,

I can show them something with passion.

I don't know if it's possible

to get an actual ceramic potter's wheel here.

- Yeah.

- I was thinking, like,

she is living in a palace in Greece.

Try to put, like, some huge columns.

The walls can be, like, panels of yellow.

I'm not a really good storyteller,

and at this point of the competition,

I'm running out of ideas. I'm running out of energy.

So I'm just saying things without thinking.

I don't know what I wanna do with this room, to be honest.

- Just something metallic and shades of white.

- Desperately need a red and white gingham.

I'm trying to create a look that is bigger and better

than anything I've done so far.

I really need it to be red and white

'cause I'm doing, like, this picnic gown.

My game plan is just to find this material that I have been

dying after at Mood forever.

Here. Oh, my God. Thank ----ing God.

Orange. Okay, I didn't realize it was more orange-y red.

Too orange-y. I'm going for more aggressive picnic gown.

- Aggressive picnic gown. - Rococo picnic gown.

I have never heard. - Rococo...

- So my room is inspired by my mom being a ceramicist.

- Mm-hmm. - And she uses

a lot of Japanese techniques. - Mm-hmm.

- And I'm often, in my work,

inspired by wabi-sabi, which is a Japanese aesthetic.

Wabi-sabi is finding

and appreciating the beauty in imperfection.

That's why I make hems unfinished.

- I just mean, like... - I need to--

It needs to be completed properly.

- Yes.

- There's a way to make an unfinished hem finished

but still look unfinished,

but with the pressure of everything,

sometimes I haven't been able to do that.

I'm thinking, like, a lot of layers.

This is, like, the color story I'm thinking.

- It's very clay-inspired. - Right, yes.

- But I think maybe there's other worlds, you know,

even those kind of purple-y tones that I'm looking at.

- That's true. Yeah. - Anything that might be

different than what you've done. - I agree.

I'm creating this geometric sculptural dress

with diamond shapes all over the place.

I'm gonna try to recreate something that I make

in the second challenge,

because that was the first time I won,

so I'm gonna try to make, like, a new version of that design.

- Nope.

But I'm a little bit concerned because I need to find a fabric

that is, like, really thick so it will stand up.

Maybe I just have to make it in another fabric,

in another color.

If I don't find the right fabric,

I'm gonna be ----ed.

- Coming up...

- I am literally cutting into this right now.

- I need my person to sparkle. - I do like lavender.

- The fabric that I see is a rose gold lamé.

Last time I worked with lamé, it didn't work so well for me.

But I'm trusting my gut and creating a gown

with an abstract rose petal at the top

that comes all the way down to the bottom.

- I'm just trying to figure out how to change my idea

on the spot 'cause it's not...

- 'Cause you're not finding fabric?

- ...the color I want. Ugh.

- You did do a red and white outfit.

- I did. - So maybe changing up the color

is kind of interesting. - Yeah.

- I mean, I love this, too. Maybe it's a backup.

- Yeah. - I'm not really sure

what I'm gonna do because my concept is, like,

slowly going down the drain.

I see this really good gray wool,

but it's not the color I want.

- I'm making a giant, like, hostess skirt with a corset.

- My look will show off everything that I'm capable of.

I'm gonna use knitwear, corsetry.

I'm going to make things levitate in the air

with all sorts of structural boning.

It's going to have a futuristic vibe,

because that's what my space is going to be.

I definitely wanna do some serious shoulder action.

- Hester. - Yo!

- I bought shiny nylon-coated fabric.

- On purpose? - Yes.

- I am so excited to see this. - I thought you might like that.

I am creating a kimono-inspired cropped jacket

with very oversized kimono sleeves.

For the bottom of the skirt,

I'm going to weave strips of fabric together

to give it the falling apart decaying look.

This is definitely showing

that I can make something a little more complex.

I'm really glad that Christian suggested adding a pop of...

- Color? - Yeah.

- Papito, what you making?

- I'm gonna try to put all these panels.

I don't know how I'm gonna make this more thicker

so it's not gonna fold like that

because I want it to stay like this.

- I got this thicker Neoprene,

so maybe I can stitch this together,

and make all the stitches and all the panels

and go crazy, and maybe that's gonna work.

- I like when you say, "Maybe it's gonna work,"

'cause that mean it's gonna work.

- Because of what happened at Mood

with the fabrics not working out,

I spent the whole first day spinning my wheels.

Eventually, I decide to make

a clear plastic and sheer gingham cocktail gown.

- I don't know what I'm about to do.

- I just figured out what I wanna do.

It only took me all day.

- Right. - But now I only have one day,

and if it doesn't work, I will have no dress at all.

This morning seems like a year ago.

- Yeah, it certainly does.

- Sebastian, 30 minutes left.

- Ugh! I know!

I have to do a lot. A lot!

- Ugh. I put the...wrong thing on the wrong side.

I think I'm particularly getting in my head because

out of all the designers left, I'm the only person self-taught,

and that can make you question yourself as a designer.

I didn't know if what I did was appealing to a wider audience.

But after getting this far, I really do think I can win it.

- The CFDA is the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

We're known a lot for supporting emerging designers.

We're also working with retailers, factories,

new media, traditional media,

so it's all part of the ecosystem of the CFDA.

The opportunity that we have for the winner

is a very unique customized mentorship.

We'll basically do a diagnostic.

It's like taking a car into the mechanic.

We'll look at the engine of your business,

and we'll see what's working

and we'll see what's not working.

And then we'll find a person who's gonna come in

with the wrench and help you fix that.

- I have so many huge plans for what I wanna do

with my brand and with my whole world,

and I would just love the chance to be mentored

and to learn how to take it to the levels that I dream of.

- Focus on your craft. Don't get caught up

with the "glamour" of fashion because we can tell you

the glamour of fashion isn't so glamorous sometimes.

- Well, I've made this modernized kimono,

and all of the panels for the skirt--

they have all of the different colors and layers,

and some of them fold over on themselves.

- Now that I'm hearing more about the look,

is that I'm maybe a little confused

of all the different layering.

- Tessa's look I just can't buy into.

It looks like this weird, twisted mess of fabric to me.

How is that even functional in any way, shape, or form?

- It feels messy because there's too many things.

Make sure you really listen to all those things I've said,

'cause it's kind of like this is it, you know?

- My model's like an abstract, uh, rose in a way,

and what my concept for the room

is a rose that grew out of concrete.

- So your room--the actual space will kind of be like a street.

- Yeah. I was gonna make it like a column skirt,

but I also wanted to put a split in it,

just to break it up.

- If she is growing from the ground,

you might not need that, because then it, like,

actually looks like a stem.

- I used to think that you needed to have so much

in one thing.

- Your work is already sculptural and interesting,

and your shapes are really interesting,

so in that case, you don't need, you know, anything extra.

Hello, sir. What's your concept?

- My room is like a Greek palace.

- A Greek palace, okay. - So that's the reason

everything is like the Greek columns.

- Although I think it's gorgeous,

for some reason, like, the balance is a little off.

Because you have nothing on the back,

so it kind of is, like, she feels like--

almost like she's gonna fall forward in a way.

- Oh, okay.

- You should play with the proportions because,

you know, the whole idea is it's a room.

You know, what is she doing in this room?

Is she doing anything? - She's just hanging out.

- She's just hanging out.

What are you envisioning?

- The walls are yellow. The floors are purple.

- Why? What? What are you talking about?

- I don't know. - You get up there,

the judges are gonna be like, "Oh, why are the walls yellow?"

- But, yeah, that's always my problem.

I-I never have, like, a clear story of what I'm doing.

I don't like to have to talk and talk.

I just like my clothes to speak for themself.

- Basically, like, galactic glamour.

- 'Cause I definitely wanted to show, like, how this could

turn into a collection.

- Mm-hmm. - Because this could go

skinny with, like, a pair of jeans.

- Right, you always have a fabulous cincher,

which I knew was not gonna not happen.

- I like that she's not overly sexy.

- I pretty much just wanted to see length

and how this could work.

I kind of like that folded like that, too.

- Jeez, Louise. It fit perfect.

It just wanna put-- tuck this part in.

- How do you feel? - Like a queen.

the palette, the textures.

- The palette, see? - Yes.

- Gorgeous. - Yes.

- Oh, it's sucks that it's so beautifully made,

but it's so...not fitting.

The bustier is way too loose.

It doesn't even fit her boobs at all.

So I have to, like, literally figure out

how to make an entirely new top, but I have no more fabric.

- How's it going? - Um, we're making it as we go.

I'm literally gonna cut that off.

I kind of, like, have a mental lapse of insanity,

and I cut into it, and I start, just, like, playing around

with materials and just trying to drape something

and hope that there will be a dress to be worn at all.

She has these grandiose visions for what she wants to create,

in an abstract way, in a dreamy way.

- It is a rose grown out of concrete.

No matter where you're from or your background,

you're able to blossom and bloom into something beautiful.

- My space is better than what it started out being,

and surprisingly enough, Aviana strikes out in it,

so I'm extremely happy with it.

- This is an entrance maker.

- And I feel it has such beautiful proportions.

- Thank you. - Do you have something

which is kind of continuative through your work?

Because that's really important

for a designer to develop a signature.

- My favorite thing that I love to include in all my garments

are pleats, ruffles, or architectural shoulders.

- For me, in terms of design,

I've seen the peplum from you a lot,

and up against such an idea that's so pushed on the back,

it seems slightly elementary on the front.

But otherwise, I think it's very clear

the story you've been telling the entire competition,

and now we've come to see you

quite literally and figuratively bloom.

- You know, every time you give me a compliment,

I'm--like, the inside, I'm, like, smiling in my heart,

so I always get happy. - You know what?

People normally do that with Nina,

so I'm glad that I have one fan.

- Well, I never got a chance to tell Nina,

- The fabric choice on the corset is really smart,

and it's actually my favorite element

of the whole story that you're telling.

- I'm inspired by my mom. She's a self-taught ceramicist.

My mom often refers to Japanese aesthetics

in her ceramics, so that's where the kimono sleeve comes in.

And I wanted to create a studio/gallery.

- Do you feel like this piece

really represents you as a designer?

- This is me at my maximalist, which is still minimal.

I feel like I really delivered.

It's pushing the envelope for me

from what I've shown so far in the competition,

and I feel pretty confident

that I will be one of the top four.

- Wow.

I love how she's getting dirty.

Cardi, you can get on the potter's wheel, too,

if you want to. - Not in this suit, girl.

- You know what? [ laughter ]

- The clothing is definitely different from what we've seen.

- I know. - You love using black

in your work. - Yep.

- I think that's a nice departure for you.

trying to push yourself to the limit,

I feel like the quality of it doesn't feel finished.

but would it look good on the runway?

Would customers buy it at a store?

- I was viewing this whole thing as a little more avant-garde.

- I get it, but it just has to be a little bit more well made.

I'm a little bit worried because my room

don't communicate who I am as a designer.

I've never been on the bottom in the entire competition,

and I hope this is not gonna be the first time.

- Tell us about your look and tell us about your room.

- She's a living sculpture,

and she's trying to live in her dream palace.

- There's a kind of a push and pull

between this kind of almost electric yellow,

and then this very neutral palette right here.

Is that intentional? Because they kind of fight a bit for me.

- Well, it was intentional, because like I say,

she's trying to live in her dream world

because in her world, everything was super plain.

It was gray, white. - Aha.

- So she wanted more joyful and more color in her life.

- Ah. Well, why doesn't she wear a colorful gown then?

- Because she's a sculptural...

- Because she's almost like a sculpture.

- Exactly.

- Whew. Stressed for you on that one.

- It's double-facing wool, and every panel is individual.

- Is it on a charmeuse? - This?

- Your ability to construct a garment

that has the weight at the bottom half of this

hanging off the lightness at the top

is very exceptional.

I mean, I would never have hung double-faced wool off of tulle.

Like, that's hard.

- I like to create a fantasy world

because the real world is a little, like, blah.

This is not the look I started out to make,

but given the emotional breakdowns

that went into making this, I think it came together

better than I could have ever anticipated.

You all look amazing. - This room is fantastic.

- I love how you hung this frame at the front.

and encase it in the plastic, but I see a few fit issues.

- Especially for me, I wouldn't have put the D-ring

in that breast area, which is then making the bustier

gape open like that, but the skirt is pretty perfect.

- I love this dress. Like... - Ooh, thank you so much.

- I feel like I could wear this on a red carpet.

But it don't really go with the room.

- Every piece is modular.

You can strip it down to just the dress itself.

like, so many challenges ago, because now I clearly understand

who and what you are, and this is you pushing it.

- Let's start with Bishme, guys.

- I think he's one of the few designers today

who actually showed us something that was bigger and better

than anything he has shown us thus far.

- This final piece, I actually see a mashup

of so many things we've seen from Bishme

in the competition so far. - Yeah.

The clothes are made really well for being self-taught.

- Yeah.

- His collection, I think, could really be something.

- This shows a lot of range. - Exactly.

- I mean, it's not stuck in a design rut.

You know, you've got this almost '40s day dress.

You've got this kind of utility pant

and this bomber.

- And he really developed this fashion language--

something that could be identified by.

- All right, let's move on and take a look at Garo's.

There is a corset in every piece except maybe this one.

- It is interesting that that waist belt is so apparent.

- It's only apparent to you now in this moment?

- I know, I know. - He has no shortage of ideas.

- Totally.

- And yet he doesn't get stuck in his ideas.

- Mm-hmm. - He comes through

with these really thoroughly made garments

with a lot of creativity.

- Well, I think there has been some ups and some downs.

Listen, I was pretty harsh on him.

There is a fine line between kitsch and costume,

and this crossed the line.

You are only here because you're technically very good.

- He gave us this, so I think that was a huge improvement.

- Can he stay in that world is the question?

- I think Garo has really taken to heart

all of our constructive feedback, and he showed us that.

- All right, moving on... - Yeah.

- ...to Sebastian. - Sebastian.

- The piece that was finally created for today

is almost the best of what Sebastian had.

- He can make amazing clothes. He doesn't always really have

a story behind them ever, so I think if he was to do a show,

I don't know what the concept would be.

- He really is solely dependent on his skill set...

- Mm-hmm. - ...to wow us.

- With this look right here,

I don't actually care what the story is.

I would just wanna throw a stiletto on,

put my hair in a top knot and walk out the door

and have everybody look at me. - Exactly.

- Do you know what I mean? That's the story.

- Let's move on to the color section of the room.

- Hester's body of work. I think every time

her work appears, it lights up the runway.

- I mean, you see this. She's so different

from kind of everything else in the room,

which I think is really important to think about.

- It's very theatrical. It's playful, a little silly.

I don't know. I'm not--I'm not quite sure

where the market is on this.

- She's got great ideas, and she has won more challenges

in this competition than anyone else.

When she has had immunity, she always pushed herself,

not just, you know, doing the same thing.

- All right. - Let's move on.

- Tessa's body of work.

Seeing her room and her world today,

I wasn't that excited by the clothes,

but it was an art installation of sorts.

- For me personally, creating the room, she was the winner.

Unfortunately, the only thing I did wanna buy

was some of those pots. - [ laughs ]

- I feel like one of the things that we've always

championed about Tessa is her taste level,

but when we have asked Tessa to push herself

outside of her comfort zone,

I think that's where we get this.

This isn't really her. She won the first challenge

with this simple, refined look,

and I think then we got a little bored.

- She's had a rough go toward the end,

and I think she did lose a little steam,

and I think she does have a lot of issues.

She doesn't finish. She kinda--

She, like, kind of can teeter on things.

But I will say, she has a pretty defined brand here.

- She is a minimalist.

It's harder to have this kind of fanfare

when you operate on block and beige.

Perhaps she is a very good designer,

but she doesn't need to have a big runway show.

- Judges, I do not envy

the decision you guys have to make.

It's gonna be a tough one.

- Let's get to the runway.

- All right, judges, we need to pick a winner,

and the winner of this challenge

has a guaranteed spot in the final four.

- This is the most nervous I've ever been.

- For me, the winner would be...

Sebastian because of the quality of design.

Even with the acid yellow room...

- [ laughs ] - That's my number one. Yeah.

- Whew.

- I have to put up a fight for someone else.

Garo made the best use of the space that he was given,

and I think that this represents sort of the culmination

of what he's capable of as a designer.

- Garo had a wonderful room.

However, on the design versus the room experience...

- Hmm. - I do think that Sebastian--

his clothes speak for themselves.

- Sebastian's room was basically hideous.

- Yeah. - But also at the same time,

the clothes with Garo are very hard for me.

I didn't love the outfit today, but the one thing I did love

was that python that he used, I thought was so beautiful,

and there could be something there.

- Now that we have a winner,

we need to choose the other designers

who are gonna move on to the final four.

- I had been pushing one person in particular,

and that was Tessa.

I think she really gave us an experience.

It was really rooted in who she was.

- I think there's some kind of a purity to her design

that I think some women like.

- I got seduced by her world,

I think she taps into this new creative that we are seeing.

She would put on a great show.

I have always been, since day one,

and I continue to be charmed by Hester Sunshine.

- For Bishme, when he does not hit, he does not hit,

but when he hits, he really hits, right?

- I wasn't sure of the finish,

but the color, I think, is beautiful.

- He is someone who has proven time and time again

that he can rise to the occasion

just like a rose that comes from the concrete.

- Can't give up no matter what. Honestly, you can't.

- So are we all in agreement? We know who is moving on

to the final four.
