THEME SONG: Here we are, born to be kings.
We're the princes of the universe.
I am Immortal.
I have inside me blood of kings.
I have no rival.
No man can be my equal.
Take me to the future of your world.
-I can't believe this.
Look at it, I have more than 100 tickets here.
I'm going to talk to the judge about this.
Listen, I'm a citizen.
I pay my taxes--
-Well, it looks like you've got another one up there.
-No!
-I bet it's a big fat one, too.
-Damn!
-Why don't you pay your parking tickets?
I pay all mine.
-Yeah, I know you do everything.
I know you know everything, Mr. I Know Everything.
-Come on, Richie.
Let's get going.
Stop feeding your face.
-If I have to pay these tickets,
I'm leaving the country.
Richie, quickly!
We're late.
-I'm here.
-Damn.
I won't believe that.
Richie, look at that?
Don't they have anything better to do?
-You know, some people collect stamps.
-Very funny.
-Well, they're not going to let you pay for those on an
installment plan, you know.
-Have either of you guys noticed we're
in a tow-away zone.
-They won't toe the car away.
-Oh, you've talked to the police already.
-No, because you are staying with the car.
It says here that the office is in building A.
-You'll get lost.
-Yeah, that's right.
Stay with Richie.
He knows his way around in there better than anybody.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Very funny.
-Well, if they put you in jail, I'll write every day.
-Yeah, sure.
MALE SPEAKER [OFFSCREEN]: Morning, Charlie.
-Now you promised to be good.
Don't go bothering the judge like last time.
-He was nice.
-I know, but he's real busy, OK?
-Is Mama coming to the courthouse?
-No, Mama's got to talk to a man about a new job.
-Why?
Didn't she like her old one?
-Yeah, but it sort of went away.
-Will your job go away, too?
-No, no.
My job's fine.
Hey, I'm the main man around here.
Without me, this building would fall down.
OK, baby, you go in there and play, OK?
Daddy's go to go to work.
-Close the door, please.
We're going to have a party.
Oh, goody.
And we're going to have chocolate cake with lots and
lots and lots and lots of icing.
Oh, goody.
I can't wait.
-Morning, Klein.
[door closes]
BAILIFF [OFFSCREEN]: All rise.
-Is the defendant ready to receive sentence?
-We are not, your honor.
I object to this entire proceeding.
-Noted.
-Anything to say before sentence is passed?
Also noted.
Bryan Slade, I hereby sentence you to the term of life
without the possibility of parole for each of the seven
counts of murder in the first degree.
Terms to be served consecutively.
-Your honor, defense would again l argue that Mr. Slade's
trial has been a mockery of the judicial system.
-Mr. Klein, your client has been convicted of one of the
most heinous crimes in the history this country, one
which has left seven people dead.
The man is so dangerous I had to sentence him in a closed
court.
-We're going all on the way on appeal, way over your head.
-Mr. Klein, that is your right.
Take him away.
-Come on, Slade.
Let's go.
-Don't worry, I haven't given up on you.
-That's very comforting, Myron.
-Mr. Klein.
-Your honor.
-Approach the bench.
Listen, pencil neck.
Next time you mouth off in my court, you'll have 30 days to
discuss the law with your other clients who never made
it out of here.
-Now!
[gunshots]
POLICEMAN [OFFSCREEN]: Some people figure meters don't
apply to them.
Hey, buddy.
Rise and shine.
RICHIE [OFFSCREEN]: Gunshots.
I heard gunshots.
-Backfires.
Just a truck backfiring, nothing to worry about.
-Yeah, right.
Stanley.
-Who wants to know?
-It's me, Richie Ryan.
Come on, we're out of here.
-I'll be damned.
Richie Ryan!
[laughs]
It's been so long.
What have you been doing with yourself?
-Go.
[gunshot]
POLICEMAN [OFFSCREEN]: Jerry!
[alarm]
[gunshots]
POLICEMAN [OFFSCREEN]: I've got you.
[alarm]
[muffled gunshots]
MAN [OFFSCREEN]: I heard some gunshots on the fourth floor.
LADY [OFFSCREEN]: Are you serious?
MAN [OFFSCREEN]: Yeah.
[gunshots]
-Back off!
[gunshots]
-We'll try the other side.
[alarm]
-Ah!
-Myron!
[laughs]
How good to see you again.
Move.
Bring him along.
Kill the alarm, Mancuso.
[alarm stops]
-Geez.
-And you thought you missed the party.
-MacLeod.
TESSA [OFFSCREEN]: Duncan!
-Let's go!
-No, they'll be waiting for us in the lobby.
Everybody back in the courtroom.
Move!
Him too.
Klein, give me your phone.
Move out!
[sirens]
[distant sirens]
-Duncan, it's me.
Duncan?
Duncan.
Don't touch me.
-Hey, bud, why don't you lay off her!
-Very nice.
ANCHORWOMAN [OFFSCREEN]: We're here in front of the county
courthouse, where 30 minutes ago an extraordinary drama
took place.
Bryan Slade, the convicted murderer, made a bid for
freedom from the courthouse where he was being sentence,
apparently aided by members of his own gang.
But the escape effort was thwarted by two unsuspecting
police officers who stumbled upon the gang members.
More detail as they become available.
-Lieutenant Cominski.
-So, they ask for anything yet?
-Yeah, a chopper and a pilot, Lieutenant.
-What are the chances of you putting some of your
men up on the roof?
-There's no roof access.
We could try bringing them in on the same chopper that Slade
wants to go out on.
-Oh, come on.
No, he's too smart to fall for something like that.
He'll have someone up there already.
What about the bailiffs?
-They're both dead.
-Put in a call to Mr. Slade.
[phone dialing]
[phone ringing]
[beep]
-Bryan Slade here.
Who am I talking to?
LT.
COMINSKI [ON PHONE]: Lieutenant Cominski.
I'm in charge down here.
-What's your first name, Cominski?
-Stosh.
SLADE [ON PHONE]: Stosh.
Let me ask you a question, Stosh.
Have you had much experience doing this sort of thing?
-Well, what do you think?
-Careful, Stosh.
We can cut through a lot of the ritual here.
Like I said, I want the chopper on the
roof in a half hour.
I want five backpacks, with enough food for
five men for a week.
Flashlights, a sleeping bag, a compass--
you get the idea.
Either the chopper's on the roof in a half hour, or your
first body hits the pavement.
-You OK, right?
-Are you all right?
-I'm all right.
Heh.
These guys aren't going to let us go--
go even if I wasn't all right.
-Maybe they will.
-No, no, no.
Not these guys.
I'm a student of the human condition.
I can size up a mark in a fiddler's minute.
-Mark?
-Yeah, mark.
Yeah.
A sucker, pigeon.
It's what I do for a living.
[chuckles]
I'm a--
I'm a con-artists, Miss.
I like it.
I--
I tried fencing for awhile, but you fall in with a bad
bunch of people that way.
Oh, in a con game, you're always dealing with nicer
people, honest people--
dumb, a bit of larceny in theirs hearts, but--
but nice and honest.
Nicer piece of people like-- like Richie here.
Anyway, my point is, these guys you cannot con.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: SWAT unit one, place your vehicle at
Post and Lincoln.
Unit to proceed on foot.
Unit one confirm.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Roger that.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: Go ahead 375.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Need to redirect traffic away from
Post and Main.
-They've taken out every other camera on the fourth floor.
Here goes this one.
-No, he'll ask Slade first.
See, I'm getting a feel for these guys.
They're like a well trained military unit--
commandos maybe.
SWAT COMMANDER [OFFSCREEN]: Slade was a
major in Special Forces.
Three of his gang are ex-military.
You've been reading their file.
-No, it's just a guess.
-Can you guess what they're going to do in 25 minutes?
-I think we better have that chopper on the roof.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: Roger that.
Sending additional support.
-Are you a cop?
You look like a cop.
-I'm not a cop.
-Military then, right?
-I put in time.
-I can always tell.
Nice move out in the hallway--
clean, efficient.
You're good.
I respect that.
-Am I supposed to respect this?
-This?
Just business.
Nothing personal.
A means to an end.
-So you're bluffing the police.
-No.
We'll do whatever's necessary.
You would to in my place, wouldn't you?
Sure you would.
You'd do whatever it took.
I'm a good judge of men.
-[WHISPERS] My little girl is somewhere on this floor.
Has anybody seen her?
-Let's try this "sources close to the scene routine," you
know, make them think that we know something
they don't, all right?
Ready.
Just shoot it.
I've just been informed by sources very high up in the
police department that something
big is about to break.
Although I see no unusual activity outside the
courthouse, these sources insist--
[helicopter]
---that this crisis is rapidly reaching a head.
[helicopter]
-Son of a bitch.
[helicopter]
-Sometimes you just get lucky.
Shoot it!
Shoot it!
Shoot it!
[helicopter]
-Are you getting it?
-Two snipers came in with the chopper.
They're on the roof.
-Keep an eye on them Take this with you.
[phone dialing]
-I'm disappointed in you, Stosh.
I thought we understood each other.
-We do.
What's the problem here?
SLADE [ON PHONE]: There are two snipers up on the roof.
-That was a mistake, Slade.
I didn't know about it.
We'll remove them.
-You're playing with me.
OK.
You want to see how I play?
Stay tuned.
[dial tone]
-We're taking the snipers off now.
-Commander, next time you plan some of this Rambo crap, do
you think you could inform me first?
I'd really appreciate it.
-Take my good friend Myron here into the office with the
security camera and do him in front of it.
-I--I tried to take care of you.
I was--
I was going to appeal.
We were going to beat this thing together.
Why don't you take him?
-He has a wife and child.
He told me about them.
-Yeah, it's true.
It's true.
It's a little boy.
It's three.
-Oh.
What's his middle name?
-Um.
It's, uh--
-What's that they say in the revolutions, Myron?
First, you kill all the lawyers.
-No, no!
[screaming]
[click]
-[cries]
-Take Rambo here and put him on ice.
Like I said, nothing personal.
Let's go.
-Duncan.
I love you.
-I'll see you.
-Not in this lifetime, pal.
-Now what the hell is this?
Who's the guy in the middle?
SWAT COMMANDER [OFFSCREEN]: Maybe one of the hostages.
-Wait a minute, I know this guy.
That's MacLeod.
[phone dialing]
SLADE [ON PHONE]: Just so we understand the seriousness of
the situation, Stosh.
-We're pulling the men off the roof, Slade!
Now listen.
Just to the chopper.
These guys are history.
SLADE [ON PHONE]: Just so there are no more games, no
more delays.
-Slade, I know you're serious.
You don't need to impress me.
I know you.
Just-- you don't need to do this.
[dial tone]
-Pick up, you son of a bitch.
Don't do this!
-Five, report your position.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Unit four in position.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Unit five, in position.
We're all ready.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Report shot fired.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Confirm that.
We heard it too.
-All squads attack on my command.
-No.
Dammit, no!
-Ready!
-Look, they're all dead before we even get close.
Now you call your men off now!
-Squads two, three, five, stand down.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Confirmed, standing down.
-Await orders.
Acknowledge.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Unit five, roger.
-So as of now, we have heard that at least one hostage has
been shot, possibly killed, and no further word as to the
identity of that hostage.
We will continue to keep you informed of any developments
as they break.
Now back to our studio.
All right, look, take this tape.
I don't care what you have to do, beg, sell your children,
just get us a live feed.
All the news, all the time.
You are there.
In sports, one dead, no men on, no score at
the top of the seventh.
Update--
any city, any time-- some poor fool just died.
Film at 11:00.
[sighs]
This week in Washington--
-There's a man in the hall.
Maybe we should tell him where we are.
[SPEAKING FOR DOLL] I don't like him.
He looks mean.
[AS HERSELF] We'll wait in here till my daddy comes back.
He'll know what to do.
he runs everything in this building, you know.
-He was a brave man.
He died well.
I admire that.
-Do you think that I give a damn what you admire?
-You're angry now.
That's understandable.
Later, in a day or so, you'll appreciate what I've told you.
-Slade.
In a day or so, you'll be dead.
-Aye.
Well, that still gives us a day or so
together, doesn't it?
[phone ringing]
[beep]
-Are we on the same frequency now, Stosh?
-Yeah, I'm listening.
-I want a helicopter big enough for the five of us,
plus 3 hostages.
LT.
COMINSKI [ON PHONE]: You have the pilot.
-No we don't.
Not until we're on the chopper we don't.
-They're headed for the Great North Woods.
They fly in their at treetop level, they can
disappear for weeks.
-How long do you think the hostages will
last once they land?
Meanwhile, we've got 25 minutes.
-Not enough time to install a beacon on the chopper.
Listen to me.
We've got to go in there, we've got to save as many
hostages as we can.
-Where the hell do you think you are, Beirut?
All right, all right.
We go in 10 minutes.
Yes, Mr. Mayor?
-Teams, two, three, five, stand by.
It's a go.
[rattling]
-Not your day, is it?
-Who are you?
Did my daddy send you?
-Yeah, he sent me to see if you are all right.
-Is he OK?
-Yeah, he's fine.
-You hurt yourself.
-It's just a cut.
It doesn't hurt much.
Now, we've got to be very quiet, OK?
-Can you please leave now?
I'm playing.
-I wish I could, sweetheart, but I'm sort of hiding.
-Then I'll go.
-Uh, no.
Uh.
There's some bad men out there.
My dolly told me they were bad.
[WHISPERS] I have to go to the bathroom.
-Schmidt isn't anywhere around.
I checked.
Maybe he split on us.
-How?
He can't get out without going past Mancuso and Pauling.
-They haven't seen him in the last 10 minutes.
-Check the roof.
-I checked the ro--
-Check it again.
[toilet flush]
-[gasps]
-You said there might be a loud noise, that
I'd be safer in here.
I didn't hear any loud noise.
-No, I know.
I was wrong.
We've got to go.
-I want to go home now.
Please.
-We can't yet.
Do you know any other really good hiding places?
-Yep.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Hold on the third landing and await
further orders.
-Let's move it.
Let's go, let's go.
-Yes.
Yes, I know that, Mr. Mayor.
Fine.
Thank you.
I'll tell him.
Yeah, he knows.
Wait.
-All squad leaders are briefed.
They know every inch of that fourth floor.
We go as soon as the chopper arrives.
Can you think of anything we're here?
-Yeah.
Munich.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: All units stand by.
Maintain radio silence.
MANCUSO [OFFSCREEN]: Slade!
Slade!
Slade!
Slade!
There's nobody in there.
There's no body!
-Pauling, you stay at the door.
[phone dialing]
[phone ringing]
-We have 10 minutes here, Slade!
What?
MANCUSO [OFFSCREEN]: Maybe he was wearing a vest.
-I shot him dead, Mancuso.
Check every room on the floor.
You stay here.
They're downstairs.
I can smell them.
-Slade!
What happened to him?
-You ever seen a bayonet wound before?
-What?
-Come on.
[gunshots]
[screaming]
[gunshots]
-Wow, wow.
Where you going?
-Little girl.
Little girl, she's out there.
-Where?
-She's hiding.
-Well, then don't lead them to her.
It's cool.
She'll be all right.
-OK.
[gunshots]
-Mancuso!
-I don't know who they are shooting at, but they are not
shooting at us.
We are all right.
OK, stay back or they'll kill us.
-Call it off.
The hostages are safe.
-All squads, hear this.
Abort.
Repeat, abort.
-What are you doing?
-I told them not to attack.
Somebody had to do it.
-That's very good.
You save more lives, including yours.
Give me that.
Cominski, are you playing with me now?
-What have you done, Slade?
We had a deal here.
-I've kept it.
Where's my chopper?
-The chopper is on its way.
Now, listen to be very carefully.
If you harm any more hostages, I will see to it personally
that you do not believe that building alive.
And I hope you believe that.
-Oh, I believe you, Stosh.
I just don't care.
She said that Slade's men didn't shoot at them.
What the hell is going on up there?
-You're some woman.
-You're garbage.
[whack]
[whack]
[whack]
-This is how the judge goes home without
anyone seeing him.
He told me.
-So what do we do now?
-Push here.
-Right here?
-You have to push very hard.
-You're being a very good girl.
You're very smart.
[WHISPERS] But now you've got to be very quiet.
-I will if you tell me a story.
-Shh.
-Only if you tell me a story.
-This is where I want you to hide.
And don't come out, no matter what you hear.
-It's pretty small.
I like my daddy's closet better.
-Well, we can't go back there right now.
Go on.
-Only if you tell me a story.
-All right, but get in first.
-No ghost stories.
I like fairy stories.
-OK.
Well, uh, once there was this place where the
fairy people lived.
It was a beautiful city in those days, surrounded by
white walls and tall stone towers.
-What were they like?
-Well, they were like regular people.
Except they lived for a very long time, and they never grew
old.
-Like Peter Pan.
-Yeah.
Sort of.
-Well, the fairies were handsome and wise and very,
very clever.
The problem was, as time went on, there were
more and more people.
And soon the fairy people had to leave their home in the
fairy city.
They moved into the mountains and into the old forests and
in the caves and in the cliffs.
But the other people always found these places, so the
fairy people had to move on.
-That's sad.
Where do they live now?
-[WHISPERS] Oh, Belinda, they're all around us.
And you know what their job is?
It's to protect children.
And sometimes tell them stories.
-Have you ever met one?
-Oh, lots.
You stay very quiet in here now, OK?
Hide.
-I know what's going on here.
-Sure you do.
-I'm serious.
It's that wacko serial killer on trial in 3B.
He must have escaped.
-I didn't hear about him.
-Eats human flesh.
I'll bet he took the body.
-What kind of trash are you talking, kid?
-Trash?
Let me ask you a question.
Was anyone out there killed with a sword?
yeah, this murderer, he kills people with swords, cuts 'em
up, and then [slurps]
mmm, mmm, good.
-Why don't you go relieve, uh, Pauling.
Send him in here.
-Sure.
-Go on.
-Slade wants to see ya.
[racks bolt]
[grating]
-[screams]
-Mancuso's losing it.
You keep an eye on him.
-How you feel?
-[GASPING] I've felt better.
-So, Stanley, what are you doing here this time?
-Fencing stolen merchandise.
Thought it would be an easy scam.
[coughs]
-At your age?
-I know, I know.
Thought I wouldn't have to go out of town so much.
I'm--
I'm getting too old for the con game, you know.
-Well, let me give you some professional advice.
Stick to what you know.
Fencing stolen property you meet the wrong kind of people.
-I just said that to somebody.
I must be looking pretty bad.
You're awful nice to me.
-He's gone.
Now there's nobody watching the hallway.
It's not secured.
Check for another way out.
Go on!
[ringing]
-Now, this is an interesting test of your reflexes.
-Can you turn and fire that thing before I skewer you?
Good news is I'm rusty, I might miss.
You wanna know what the bad news is?
The bad news is I'm really pissed.
[helicopter]
MALE SPEAKER [OFFSCREEN]: Chopper
squads on the building!
[helicopter]
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Chopper inbound,
golf, zulu, papa, victor.
Respond, blue leader.
[helicopter]
[phone ringing]
SLADE [ON PHONE]: Cominski, I'm getting out of here.
I've got a hostage.
If you try anything, we die together.
-I hear you, Slade None of my people will stop you.
Just what are you doing?
-[screams]
-Take me!
Take me!
-I'll go.
-What are you trying to do?
-You!
-I have a proposition for you, Slade.
-Who the hell are you?
-Just an old soldier.
Here's the deal.
You drop your gun, we have a duel.
-A duel.
[laughs]
Come again.
-You get to that gun before I get to my--
this.
You kill me, take her, fly away.
-Why should I do something that stupid?
-Soldier's honor.
-Honor.
-It's all you have left.
[clatter]
[clatter]
-[gasps]
-Nothing personal.
-[CRYING] Oh, I missed you!
Are you OK?
Mister, I don't know who you are, but I owe you.
-Oh, now that you mention it.
-Son of a gun, Richie.
Look at that.
-[laughs]
You're getting senile, Stanley.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: All units go.
Go!
-All right, folks.
Let's, uh, take you down stairs and, uh, we have some
questions here.
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: What happened up there?
Who killed them?
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: No idea.
Fourth floor is secure.
We found Slade.
ANCHORMAN [OFFSCREEN]: Lieutenant, do you really know
what happened up there, Lieutenant?
ANCHORWOMAN [OFFSCREEN]: Did the police kill Slade?
ANCHORMAN [OFFSCREEN]: Commander,
describe the final assault.
Commander!
ANCHORWOMAN [OFFSCREEN]: You've go to give us more.
Can you give us the name's of the hostages?
-Suspects apparently had a falling out.
Four of them are dead and one is in custody.
[sirens]
-What about the hostage that was killed?
-That, uh, fortunately, was only a bluff.
The hostage is alive and well.
He's doing very well.
He's pretty shaken up, doesn't want to talk to anyone.
That's all for now.
Thanks.
-Yeah, but can you give us any reasons--
-Thank you.
--why the gang members began killing each other?
-What do you think happened out there?
-I'm saving it for my memoirs.
-Richie.
Richie, what are you doing here?
-Got to go.
-Well, wait--wait a minute Were you in there?
What-- what happened to you?
-Look who's here?
-What-- what--
what, um--
what happened?
-Aren't you getting in?
-No.
I'll see you at home later.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: Unit two, how many body
bags have been requested?
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Six.
We have the bailiffs in the corridor.
The others are spread out all over the fourth floor.
WOMAN [ON RADIO]: Roger.
Medical examiner is on his way up.
Did you say six bodies, unit two?
POLICEMAN [ON RADIO]: Roger that.
THEME SONG: And here we are, we're the
princes of the universe.
And here we belong, fighting for survival.
We've got to be the rulers of your world.
I am Immortal.
I have inside me blood of kings.
I have no rival.
No man can be my equal.
Take me to the future of your world.
