For this matchup between the Mafia and
Yakuza, we've got some particularly

dangerous weapons.

So I think this is going to be our
closest matchup yet.

Scientist and karate black belt Jeff
Damoline has designed specific tests to

reveal the killing force of these
powerful weapons.

ER trauma doctor, Armand Dorian, will
give his medical opinions about these

vicious attacks.

So the stakes are much, much higher than
what we've seen previously.

The mafia's weapons will be wielded by
Italian -American historian and mafia

weapons expert, Joe Ferrante.

To be in the mafia, you must be 100 %
Italian.

back to the old country, to Italy, to

Sicily, for you to even be a made man.

Thomas Bonanno knows the mafia inside

In an organization where family means
everything, Tommy's cousin was Joe

Bonanno, head of one of the original
five families and the inspiration for

title role in the movie The Godfather.

For any mafia person in the world, they

say, have you heard of the mafia?

They're going to say yes.

Are they deadly? Yes.

Are they warriors?

Yes. What about the Yakuza? Who?

But the experts representing the Yakuza
are ready to reveal their secrets.

government dissolved, the Yakuza armed

There's these huge stockpiles of weapons
from right after the war. And when you

have the weapons, you have power.

Heavy trained in martial arts, the
disciplined Yakuza grace their lineage

Japan's legendary samurai warriors.

When you're trained to fight from a very
young age, you just see one adjustment

of the body and you know exactly where
the attack is going to come from,

especially from an untrained opponent.

Japanese Yakuza and New York Sicilian
Mafia each ruled their respective turfs.

But when they face off, which one will
bury the other?

Both of these opponents are getting
firearms, which are instantly lethal

depending on where they hit.

Because of that, it's really anyone's
game.

Thompson's 1921 submachine gun fired up
to 1 ,000 rounds per minute.

It's a very powerful weapon. I mean, you
could spray down a whole wedding, spray

down a whole funeral.

It's going to give you a serious case of
lead poisoning.

So because of the lethality of these
weapons in this particular episode,

got to go off -site in order to get the
safety we need to test these weapons

appropriately. At a nearby firing range,
the team will find out if the Tommy gun

deserves its legendary reputation.

Great firing power.

Deadly kill.

And if you miss, you're going to shoot
them again to make sure they're dead.

Reliable? Does it jam a lot? No, it
doesn't jam at all. Is it an accurate

weapon? It's been 50 feet and killing
and moving.

Three, two, one, fire.

The Tommy gun easily cuts down this
single target with a hail of bullets.

What if there's more than one enemy?

We've got different distances. We've got
a standing guy. We've got sitting guys.

To see how much damage his gun can do,
Tommy is given a single drum holding 50

what we're going to have to compensate

two of history's most sinister warriors

Yakuza versus Mafia.

The Mafia's arsenal is simple and
effective.

The Tommy Gun, Molotov Cocktail,
Baseball Bat, Sword Art Shotgun, and the

Ice Pick.

But the Yakuza's arsenal is meant for
shock and awe.

The British Sten, Ceramic Grenades,
Nunchucks, the Walther, P -38 Pistol,

and the Sai.

When you compare these two groups, the
Yakuza has a lot more education with

regards to killing. They're the scholar
of killing.

And I think that's going to end up
making the difference.

Mafia proved that Tommy Gunn's killing
power was more than crime novel hype.

Yet the Yakuza are ready to reveal their
own killing move.

The British Den.

Simple.

yet chillingly accurate submachine gun.

It's a specialized piece. This weapon
was used primarily to keep control of

streets for high firepower, but very
effective.

the chest, the rest of them in the face.

So what do you guys think? Any of these

Basically, it's quick and efficient. The
intimidation factor of an automatic

weapon with the accuracy of pinpoint
laser.

Nobody survived.

But which team has the more powerful
long -range weapon?

High -speed footage also shows the
stand's amazing accuracy.

I've always thought of a machine gun as,
as you say, a spraying weapon, but I'm

seeing someone who's placing four or
five rounds at a very high rate of speed

it needs to be, right? Right. Just a

talking about. You're actually taking

time to pace out your shots, but it's
still enough to drop all of these guys

Because of the martial arts training,

I'd have to say, sir, this is excellent
shooting. In a second and a half, you

wiped them out and had ammo to spare. I
think this proves that precision

dominates power.

So which submachine gun gives their gang
an edge?

The Sten makes a bang, but the Tommy gun
makes a boom.

It's greater caliber, so it hits with
more stopping power, but it also fires

faster and is capable of holding the
drum clip, which can hold 100 rounds.

I'm going to have to give the edge to
the Thompson submachine gun.

The Mafia gets the edge in long -range
weapons for the Thompson submachine gun.

The disciplined Yakuza feel this game
will ultimately be played in their

The ceramic grenade is the equivalent of
a flashbang grenade, except that it has

a more lethal bang.

The mafia would not know what hit them.

And before they can recuperate or even
think straight, they'd be dead.

Testing this grenade's explosive power

Yes, primarily all black powder. To see
how much damage these small grenades can

do, Jeff places pressure sensors on

The numbers I get from this will tell me
whether we've popped the eardrums,

caused brain injury, or collapsed a

What's impressive is the fact that...

This person has a complete compressed
rib cage, a dropped lung, but these two,

almost like they're unscathed. It's
very, very interesting.

Though not intended to be lethal, the
grenade lacerates the closest victim.

This guy's confused.

This guy's disoriented.

And you know what? This guy's dead.

Impressive. But the mafia also know how
to deliver bang for the buck.

The Molotov Cocktail.

A deadly message in a bottle.

This scare tactic was often used for
revenge and to make sure no witnesses

survived to tell the tale.

Gentlemen, Molotov cocktail.

Very simple and effective product.

A little love letter, basically.

Could someone survive a Molotov
firestorm with a full fire crew waiting?

Jeff places temperature sensors in the
test vehicle to measure the intensity.

The vehicle bursts into flames,

but the pain is just beginning.

The face just reached 300 degrees C. The
chest is at 200 C.

How's the roof? The roof is spiked.

Holy crap.

I think they got the message.

I guess what's really good to know is
how quickly the heat built up in that

right. I don't even know if you'd have
enough time to get out. You can't get

out. You don't get out. As soon as it
was thrown, like the whole bottom was

covered in flame.

Back at the Fight Club.

Each team defend their explosive weapon.

It's almost like the glass breaks,
right? And it takes a moment for the gas

get out. I think the Molotov cocktail
gives you a fraction of a second to

actually realize what's going on, get
out of the car, and start shooting.

Whereas the ceramic grenade...

You've completely incapacitated at least
one person here, whereas the other two

or three would have a very hard time
getting out and drawing the pistol.

because they're just stunned.

Exactly.

I'm giving the edge to the ceramic
grenade.

The Yakuza gets the edge in explosives
for the ceramic grenade.

So far, the Mafia and the Yakuza have
very well matched.

But these gangs are just taking off the
gloves.

of destruction with martial arts

How many people actually go into a fight
wanting to die?

expecting to die. It's engraved in their
blood and in their genes.

There's no way you can fight that.

Young men hoping to join the Yakuza were
drilled to ignore the pain of battle.

Yakuza were trained not to give up
anything to their enemies.

Not pain, not emotion, nothing.

Any mistakes require personal sacrifice.

If a member fails, they show their
dishonor by severing one of their

the originators. They want to be the
innovators. That's exactly right.

The Sicilian Mafia's peasant background
was seen in their use of everyday

objects in combat.

These newly arrived immigrants found
inspiration from America's favorite

pastime, a baseball bat.

This is my favorite weapon of all.

There's nothing better than taking a bat

125 -pound pig.

And what I want to know is if you can
smash this guy's spine in.

A killer combo of wood and chain.

Nunchucks in combat were primarily used
as a defensive farmer's weapon. But you

could do a numerous amount of attacks,
like across the head, body, above the

chin. And any one of those would
probably knock somebody out pretty

this? This weapon is very easily

concealed. It's very flexible, and you
can use it for a lot of different

You can use it to farm people, crush
skulls with it, break arms, break legs.

whole idea is you get mesmerized by the

it's not real practical.

To test the kill factor of the
nunchucks, we'll use a gel head and

Yeah, I mean, obviously, when you see
this, you know that it's pretty much

on the inside. It does worry me, though,
that you have to take two to three,

even four swipes at it before you're
sure of what your handiwork has done.

Here, let me show you what I can do with

As the final battle nears, each side
raises the statement.

The nunchucks are flashy. They present
themselves a lot more than what trauma

they inflict.

However, the bat, it definitely does a
lot of trauma. I mean, the bat breaks

bones. I gotta go with the bat.

The mafia takes the edge in close combat
weapons.

But the yakuza are ready to fire back.

Who will win the ultimate street fight?

Yakuza versus mafia.

Yakuza. Versus the Mafia, two of the
meanest, most conniving groups of thugs

history are about to fight it out.

The 1920s Mafia openly killed in broad
daylight to protect their interests.

The problem here is that people started
to get greedy.

Because if one guy fights the other guy,
you got a big war. You got a huge war.

In contrast...

The Yakuza maintained a lower profile
while they fought for control of a legal

racket.

Hard -hitting, easily concealed guns
were critical to success on the streets.

When given the choice between precision
and firepower, the mafia went for

maximum impact.

If somebody comes at me with a handgun,
I'm going to take this all -off shotgun,

blow his head off, and have a nice day.

It's real simple.

The double -barreled, sword -out
shotgun.

Packed a one -two punch.

Sword -out shotguns, they don't jam. And
the firepower they put out is

phenomenal. All you do here is double
-click, and you're gone.

It's over with.

You don't have to aim, you just shoot
points. That's right, that's right.

Demolishes anything and everything in
front of you.

Two triggers? Two triggers, one for each
barrel.

Okay, cool. And how would you saw these
barrels off? Right down the middle with

a hacksaw. Hacksaw? Hacksaw. I'm not
convinced you're going to maintain the

internal ballistics.

Oh, trust me. This thing, two shots, is
going to leave the body unidentifiable.

The mid -range combat, the Yakuza
favored a precision weapon that could

greater distance.

The Walker P -38 pistol was lean, mean,
and deadly accurate.

Walther P38's perfect, like, let's say,
for a assassination attempt. It's

accurate, it's small and concealable,
and that's all that really matters.

But which weapon delivers the bigger
impact?

What's the Yakuza doing with the German
weapon?

What, you didn't study world history?

They fought together during World War
II.

It wasn't really standard issue to the
Japanese, but after the war it was

accessible to the Yakuza via the black
market.

Oh, I love the tightness of the group.
The only thing is I see a little bit low

and left. That's because he got that gun

How will the guy be feeling after this?

The exit wound destroyed the skull.

The Walther P38 pistol clearly delivers
an accurate kill.

Now it's the short -off shotgun's turn.

to prove it can deliver the hit as well.

The killing power of the 12 -gauge
shotgun is devastating.

What have we here?

He has no more anything where his heart
should be. And you can see the peppering

here as well.

Those are all signs of close quarters.
As we back this guy up, you would see

to the Yakuza.

In comparing the P -38 to a shotgun, the
amount of trauma caused by multiple

pellets going into your chest versus one
bullet, Multiple pellets win.

Shotgun, far greater killer than a P
-38.

The mafia gets the edge in mid -range
weapons with a 12 -gauge shotgun.

The mafia have the Yakuza on the run.

But the descendants of the samurai have
deadly tricks up their sleeve.

I got the ability to disarm whatever's
coming at me and bite them. Coming up, a

centuries -old killer takes on a lethal
kitchen tool.

So far, the Yakuza and Mafia have pulled
out their best firepower to see

These kings of the underworld were also
famous for their special weapons.

We got a little shaving knife. Okay.
This shaving knife can cut you from one

Swords are still very good.

But when you're talking about the actual
Yakuza against Mafia, close combat, no

question, Yakuza will take them out.

Our warriors' special weapons threaten
to make mincemeat of any enemy that

crosses their path.

All this is is a silent five inches of
death.

The common household ice pick.

The mafia is a deadly killer.

The ice pick was used very simply.

In many cases, it's been reported that
people would just go to town with this

thing and just put in 150 holes in
somebody just to make a point.

Well, you know, the first thing I
noticed here is the length of this. I

you put this into the brain.

and pretty much anywhere you put this
in, it's reaching basic functions to

sustain life.

This would go hand -in -hand with the
kiss of death. You'd go in for a hug.

Boom, right into the brainstem.

At silent death, the body's going to
flop, and then the body's going to die.

To block bladed weapons, hook it down,
and attack with a blunt end, or spin

around and use the sharper end as a more
lethal option.

I mean, the movements are beautiful.
It's fluid action. It looks pretty, but

let's really see what it can do.

Wow, that's a good setup.

Jeff readies the test by attaching a
sensor to the foam torso.

This device will measure the force
delivered by the deadly sigh.

It's a real deal.

I wasn't joking about the point on that
thing. Those things are sharp.

one. I think it's a very fluid weapon. I

think it works well with his motions,
and you can use body inertia to your

This will hit the rib and go right

So if you hit anywhere in the chest,
you're almost guaranteed a puncture

of the lung. However, that does not mean

In the ultimate battle, can a warrior

In comparing the P -38 to a shotgun,
