As you can see,
it takes a lot of skill and practice.

Yeah? I will! And I won't just be better,

I'll- [stammers] I'll be the best.

You weren't the best at Hula,
and I'm still hopping.

I'm noticing you seem to be
having a competition.

about the lion and the cheetah?

relate to this story.

It takes place on the plains of Africa.

Every day, two friends,
a lion cub and a cheetah cub

would fetch water from a stream.

Then they would play together.

Hey, pass me the ball.

[Stillwater] Until one day the lion cub
found he had a new talent.

[roars]

Wow, you roared. That's so cool.

You think so? Can you roar?

Uh, I'm practicing my roar too.

[inhales, meows]

[laughs] You call that a roar?

I said I was practicing.

[roaring]

Hey, Lion, wanna race to that tree
and back? Bet I can run faster.

Ready. Go!

[laughs] Beat you. [laughing]

Hey, I told you I would be faster
than you. [chuckles] I won. [laughs]

[Stillwater] Soon, every day was the same.

[cheetah cub] I can run faster.

[lion cub] I can roar louder. [roars]

[Karl] Didn't they play together anymore?

[Stillwater] No, Karl. Now it seemed
every time they crossed paths,

they felt the need to show each other
who was best.

Day after day, year after year, they
still wanted to prove who was better.

[roars]

[cheetah] I can run faster.

[Stillwater] Nothing ever changed
for these two.

Until one of them had enough.

[roars]

You know what, Lion?
I will never roar louder than you.

[scoffs] 'Course not.

And that's okay.

Oh, it- it is?

Yes, because that's something you do.
And you do it really well.

I can still run really fast.

Well, you do run faster than me.

[laughs] Much faster.

Mmm. Thank you, Lion.

I miss when we played together as cubs.

Yes, until we were more concerned
about who was better.

You know, it's still not too late.
How about a game?

As long as we don't keep score. [laughs]

[lion] Good pass.

[cheetah laughs] Look at
your fancy footwork.

- Come on now. [chuckles]
- [lion grunts, chuckles]

The lion and the cheetah

spent a lot of time
trying to show who was best

instead of having fun together.

Are we doing that? [sighs]

Always competing isn't fun,
playing with you is.

Competition can be fun, and so can
celebrating the talents of others.

We should do that, Koo. We should
celebrate all the things we can do.

I know what to do. We can have
a talent show. Won't that be fun, Karl?

What's your favorite thing
about fall, Michael?

The changing of the leaves.

Did you know it's caused by having
shorter days and changes in temperature?

That makes the green go away,
and we get to see the other colors.

Red, orange, brown,

yellow-brown and orange-brown, and red.

[chuckles] That's a lot of colors, Karl.

That's because there's a lot of leaves.

[Michael] Whoa. That is a lot of leaves.

It looks like Mr. Morgan hasn't
been able to rake his yard.

Well, raking leaves is a lot of work.
Especially for Mr. Morgan.

Hey, kids.

[children] Hi, Mr. Morgan.

I know! We can help Mr. Morgan
by raking the leaves off his lawn.

That's a great idea, Michael.

I bet Stillwater has rakes
in the shed we can borrow.

- We'll be back in a minute, Mr. Morgan.

for when you're ready to take a break.

We were just talking about pumpkin bread.

[laughs] Then, uh, I better get started.

[Michael] Hmm.
This is gonna be a lot of work.

Why don't we each take a part of the yard?

Karl and Stillwater can do the left side,

Addy and I can do the right side.

I'm gonna split my section up into rows
and rake one row at a time.

I think I'll just make one gigantic pile.

Sure. Everyone can do it their own way.

Leaf plane. [imitating airplane]

[humming, chuckles]

[Karl imitating airplane]

You sure have a big pile of leaves there.

It's perfect for jumping, isn't it?

Can we?

[chuckles] That's the best part.

- Whoo! Whoo! [laughs]
- [chuckles]

That does look tempting.

- Whoo! Yeah! Whoo! [chuckles]
- Ooh. [chuckling]

As long as we put the pile back
when we're done. Incoming!

[children laughing]

Look at that. Not a single leaf left.
All we have to do is put them in the bin.

Well, after all your hard work, I'd say
it's about time for a break. And a treat.

- Pumpkin bread.

Mmm. This is so good.

Yeah. Thanks, Mr. Morgan.

It would have taken me the rest of the
fall to rake all those leaves by myself.

Hmm. [chuckles]

[wind whistling]

Uh-oh. It's getting a little windy.

Oh, no. The leaves are going everywhere.

We have to keep the leaves down. Come on.

[Karl] Turn off the wind!

Grab that one, Karl.

Come back, leaf.

I'm not having much better luck myself.

Just try to get the leaves
to stay in the pile.

They're coming down from the trees too.

I don't believe it.
It looks like we didn't do anything.

We're sorry, Mr. Morgan.

We promised there wouldn't be a single
leaf, but now they're everywhere again.

We worked so hard,
but it's like it didn't even matter.

Well, on the bright side,
I have more warm pumpkin bread.

And I have a story.

Those are two things we all like.

[Stillwater] Every fall, as soon as
the weather started getting cold,

Farmer Zhu would begin plowing his field.

The job was a lot of hard work.

What do we do now, Papa?

We plant the seeds, Qui.

[Stillwater] But Farmer Zhu
never complained

because he was growing food
for the village.

The wheat they were planting
would turn into

delicious bread for everyone to enjoy.

[sighs] That was a hard day's work.
What do we do now, Papa?

[Zhu] We water the seeds.

Finally, we are finished.
What do we do now, Papa?

We wait.

[Stillwater] Fall turned to winter.

Winter turned to spring.

And with the warm weather,
the wheat grew and grew.

It took many months of hard work
to grow this field.

What do we do now, Papa?

Tomorrow we will harvest.

[Stillwater] But that night,
there was a late frost.

- [wind whistling]
- [ice crackling]

The cold weather that came last night
has ruined all of the crops.

I'm afraid we won't have
any wheat this year.

But we plowed the field.
We planted the seeds.

We watered and waited and now,
all that work for nothing?

It is not for nothing, my son. This wheat
will enrich the soil for our new crop.

A new crop?

Of course.

There will always be fields to plant
and food to grow for our village.

What do we do now, Papa?

We begin again.

Farmer Zhu did all that work,

but he couldn't stop the frost
from destroying the crops.

Is that like how
we can't turn off the wind?

Just like that, Karl.

The only thing we can control is
how we react to things that happen.

Farmer Zhu said
there will always be seeds to plant.

And there will always be leaves to rake.

Some things just need to be done
again and again.

Like picking up our toys?

And brushing our teeth.

And making our beds.

And it appears there's something
I need to do again too:

slice some more pumpkin bread.

[all laugh]

You know, it still was a good day.
I like the raking system I came up with.

I got to jump
in the biggest pile of leaves ever.

And we got pumpkin bread and a story.

I sure appreciate your kindness.

Even if we didn't get all the leaves?

Even if you didn't get all of the leaves.

It was nice having you over to visit.

[chuckles] There will always be
leaves to rake.

[Karl] I'm going to be
a bulldozer this time.

- [chuckling]
