it's too much?

I had the worst summer in my life. The
worst summer.

How the hell we got relegated?

And I was angry.

I was angry. We didn't deserve it.
Players didn't deserve it. Fans didn't

deserve it.

This is not the place I want to be.

We were rubbish. We deserve to be in

The main focus is to go up.

I don't feel that we belong in the

The task is quite clear.

What we have to do now is be the best in
every game.

But this is my mission.

I want to have no limitations.

Last year, we screwed up. In the end, I
believe all sports start at the top. And

if you have failure, it starts with you,
and you need to provide solutions for

how to improve things.

It's inexcusable to Tom.

It also was so infuriating to be in that
position that it galvanized our

resolve to go and do some very ambitious
things.

It immediately set out, like, okay, how
are we going to fix this?

That's probably three things we had to
rebuild.

We had to rebuild the culture, we had to
rebuild the physical infrastructure,

and we had to rebuild the product and
the pitch.

In a very short period of time, the
stadium was generally unrecognizable.

It's amazing.

I mean, this was the dump. This was the
dump. We'll go out this way. The dump,

it was like, it was an embarrassment.

This is the fan team.

This is their fabric of their community,
and it's like, okay, how can we

complement their love of their team with
the support it needs for it

to be successful based on our own
experience?

I got a picture of it so I could send it
to Tom.

It was very painful to be relegated, but
despite the fact it didn't work out,

there was a bit of a silver lining in
there.

I don't see any silver lining in that.

I'd much rather be one step away from
the Premier League than two steps. And

we've got 500 more seats. So great. And
they'll sell.

Yeah. Yeah.

Well, that's the bet we're making.

In this past offseason, we had an
opportunity to really invest and create

culture that was reflective of what we
wanted.

I think culture, you hear that word a
lot.

Culture is about people doing the right
things every day for one another so that

the organization can be successful.

And that's where Tom's influence really
started to pay dividends, where we could

do a full search for a manager over a
long period of time, interviewing scores

of candidates, looking at hundreds of
candidates, and find somebody that we

reflected our vision.

Birmingham City have appointed Chris
Davies as their new first team manager.

He has extensive experience as a coach
in the Premier League, most recently at

Tottenham. Chris, welcome to Birmingham
City Football Club.

My brother told me, he said, Chris
Davies is going to be the new manager,

I'm, who?

I've never heard of him.

Very good, yeah.

None of us knew who he was.

I'm not the only one.

First appointment as manager. Why did
now feel right for you?

I think I've been ready to be a manager
for quite a few years. It's something

I've always been on that pathway to.

We spoke to, honestly, hundreds of
managers and every man and his dog

job.

Chris was different.

Chris has been coaching for nearly 20
years.

He wasn't unknown to us.

My pathway as a coach, I was not someone
who had a long or successful playing

career, so I had to really earn it.

through years of work and sessions and
building credibility and respect.

Obviously, I had a big coaching
pedigree, but never actually been a

for them to put their trust in me was
big.

I've worked at some of the biggest clubs
in the world.

Liverpool, Celtic.

I was assistant manager at Tottenham.

So when it came up, you're thinking, OK,
well...

Don't really want to go to League One,
but it's Birmingham and everybody knows

what they're about.

Chris has got exactly the right
attitude.

He's young, super energetic, really
positive, incredibly driven,

really football smart.

He's got real competitive fire.

When Chris spoke, you could visualize
it.

His message was clear, the information
was clean.

OK, two on the ball.

And the most important thing, he knew
the expectation to win.

For me, it's high energy, high
intensity, style of football.

To attack, to be dominant, the number
one rule for all the best teams is

to be the most hard -working team.

I believe very much in practising.

very hard and being a very stressful
practice environment so that you can

go out there when it matters on the
field against good competition and that

you're not overwhelmed by the
competitive nature of the game so the

One of the biggest parts of my job was
those two months with Craig.

He spoke to so many players.

We need to create a team that can play
football.

We need to create a team that can fight.

We were looking at our squad thinking,
right, what do we need? And you need to

score goals to get promoted.

There's no two ways about this.

We have to get Alfie May.

Alfie was a top scorer in the league
last season.

I heard great things about his
character.

And then I also thought he'd be really
hungry as well to make his mark.

I'm sweating.

prolific goalscorer in League Two,
prolific goalscorer in League One, and

chance to push a team on. So I just
thought it all ticked all the boxes.

I was actually

signing for Huddersfield.

I got a phone call from my agent saying
that Birmingham are going to match the

bid of Huddersfield.

They offered an extra year on my
contract.

Yay! Right, you ready? And me being sort
of a senior pro now at 31, years

are important.

I think it was about eight and a half
years ago I was working on a building

site.

I was brought up on sort of a council
estate and working hard to try and earn

some money to buy a building house with
my brother's company.

Playing non -league football on a
Saturday.

At 23, went on a week's trial at
Doncaster and never looked back.

When it comes down to sports with the
kids, I'm very...

I stuck up for myself.

probably more of a winner than I have

been because there's that end goal where

and next year play in the championship.

But we have got 46 league games to sort
of grind out

and achieve what we set out to do.

new coach, new programme, super

Chris kind of ran a tough training camp.
He's really interested in getting these

guys in good shape and pushing them. I
think we've made a lot of good moves to

get different players in there that are
embracing what he's trying to do.

I actually got to move all the players
that I felt were not contributing and

bring in players that I could almost...

Guaranteed, certainly from a cultural
point of view, would contribute.

Really, we turned over the entire team.

And this does look like a championship
-ready team, doesn't it, on paper?

So I spoke to the team yesterday.

It's just me kind of telling them, it's
about you guys. It doesn't matter what

anyone else says.

Chris can coach you, but at the end of
the day, you guys got to go out there

play the way you're capable.

One thing I've missed more than anything
is those fireworks.

Today we get to see them in League One
against Reading and there can only be

winner.

The sun is shining and the expectations
are high.

The Birmingham fans hoping that they'll
find an immediate return back to the

Championship.

Birmingham with new faces, a new league
to get used to as well.

but they will have the weight of
expectation on their shoulders and

for promotion.

What a really good chance in following
the way of Reading.

had come in and it was really easy for

people to start getting carried away and
I think that Reading result just put

everybody's feet back on the ground.

Then we get all the way to the first
match.

exactly as we planned, but we hadn't

the squad yet.

We knew we had a good team, but we
wanted that little bit more.

We had to do a lot of convincing to get
the sort of players that I knew would be

really good League One players. Just for
my benefit, let's just run through

where we were at the end of last season
to where we are today.

The transfer window is an opportunity

where you can basically trade, buy and
sell. Once the transfer window is shut,

you obviously can't do business.

We ended up signing Tomoki on deadline
day.

That was a massive, massive signing for
us.

He's a hot player.

We believe that it's a little bit of a
field of dreams scenario. We build it,

you know, we're proving it, right?

We tried to build a team that could win
the league.

You know, we're convincing players to
leave clubs that are... playing in

Champions League football to come play
League One.

Tom was great in this because it's easy
to have money and spend money, but it's

hard to spend it in the right areas.

And then you start hearing whispers and
they're saying, we're going to put a

final bid in for Jace Dansfield.

Jay was on loan from Fulham.

He was like a hero.

His first loan season, they always say,
don't fall in love with a loan player.

The fans loved him. He gave 100 % every
game. You could see his heart was really

in it and he really tried.

That's all we want.

Jay Stanfield, who has been a tannisman
for Boos this season.

His future's still uncertain.

Might have been his last run out in a
blue shirt. Who knows?

Jay Stansfield is a Premier League

Everyone was telling us there was no way
it could happen and it would be

impossible and that Jay would never come
play for us and we'd never be able to

afford to buy him.

Fulham have rejected the £10m bid from
Birmingham City Football Club, but

negotiations still remain ongoing.

It's hard to find really
transformational players.

And Jay was getting offered
opportunities at other clubs too that

than ours at that time and certainly
maybe in the championship because Jay's

really good player.

At the minute, they're saying it's not
for sale.

transfer window to improve the squad and

deliver a product to you that you'll all
enjoy.

And we got nearly everything we wanted.
