they're going to be looked at as

- There's egos and there's
attitudes.

- I knew I could out wrestle
him.

but it didn't matter.

off.

- I got betrayed by what used to
be a brother.

But karma's a bitch.

- I am coming to end your

- I don't know how much more

of today's biggest superstars.

- Roman Reigns is addicted to
greatness.

That's why he is our Tribal
Chief.

- Seth 'Freakin' Rollins, one of
the most successful competitors

of the last decade.

- In some weird way,
it's like they're-

they're wrestling soulmate.

You could have a match with them
at any time or any place,

and it could be special and
magical and memorable.

- But it feels like we're at a
family reunion.

- That kind of chemistry you
don't have with everyone,

but I don't know if
they're friends.

They were friends, and I know
that now they're very

competitive with each other,
which probably makes

the rivalry even better.

- There they are, the Wild
Samoans,

Afa, Sika.

- My father is Sika of the
Wild Samoans.

He's a Hall of Famer with the
WWE.

So I come from the
wrestling business.

Everybody in
my family,

either has aspirations or
dreams,

or someone in our family is
doing that dreaming for you.

So yeah, one way or the other,
I've wanted to be involved

in this business.

And then years later, as I was
getting older, dad asked me,

"When are you ever going to want
to wrestle?"

I told him, "I'm, I'm ready."

I got a call the next day from
WWE.

"Hey, we'd like you to try out
for FCW."

And I was down there the next
week.

- FCW or Florida Championship
Wrestling is basically a proving

ground for young wrestlers

to make sure they were ready

for the biggest stage of all.

By this point, it was clear that
Roman had a great look,

and he had huge star appeal.

- Trying to play it all cool.

But I had a lot of ground to
cover.

- You wanna to wear it?

Put it on.

- For me, growing up, there
really wasn't anything else

other than WWE.

It's all I watched.

I obsessed over it.

- Good, mean.

- Used to wrestle in my
grandparents living room.

Body slam.

I lived and breathed it pretty
much from the day I discovered

it, when I was like 4 or 5 years
old, till all the way till now.

- Sit around.

- Roman got an opportunity based
on his last name.

And me, on the other hand-

[laughing]

I had none of that.

I had no pedigree.

I had nobody to help me get in
the door.

And I just made a name for
myself on the independent scene,

working my way up from little
tiny shows to the biggest

independent shows that you could
find.

- Just 21 years of age.

What a bright future.

- And you know, one thing led to
another, and I was able to walk

in the door around the same time
as Roman at FCW.

We didn't run in the same
circle.

He and I weren't close.

There was a presence about him,
but it wasn't anything that

jumped off the page to me.

- Uh, he was an [bleep].

To me, just came off as, like, a
[bleep].

Just came off as a quiet,
antisocial,

didn't really care about the
etiquette,

or the culture of the business.

What I want most is to to be on
one of those banners back there.

Not only as a FCW Heavyweight
Champion, but a WWE superstar.

- Roman was hand-picked company
guy,

can't miss blue chip prospect.

Seth maybe feels he
should have been

the hand-picked guy.

- Hell yeah,

there was a chip on my shoulder.

When you walk in and you see
people

with these famous last names,

Their dads are Hall of
Famers and they're getting

opportunities based solely on
that.

Of course, it's going to rub you
the wrong way.

Of course it's going to piss you
off.

It's about honor.

It is about respect.

- This is a triple threat match-

- You see right there Roman-

- -against Dean Ambrose
against Seth Rollins.

- So an incredible night for all
three of these gentlemen,

because this is the proving
ground.

This is where they have to
shine.

- It was then.

At-at the time, and I was doing
commentary for FCW,

and I'm watching the
dynamic between them.

They both have the
same mindset and they both

wanted to be that top person.

- Roman was very green at the
time.

Obviously, Ambrose and myself,

we have tons more experience
than he did.

Maybe the higher ups saw that as
an opportunity to put Roman

with us and just see if he could
hang.

And he hung.

- But-

Oh, just like that.

- I was in such deep water.

I quickly understood that I was
under experienced,

I was undereducated.

My opinion of him quickly
shifted from

"This guy seems like an [bleep]
to, well, maybe he should be.

He's put in the work.

Yeah, maybe I'd feel that way
too, if I was him."

- I mean, he's come from a
family of great professional

wrestlers, although he's only
been here for, what,

less than a year now.

He's got all that knowledge in
his brain

that he's just got to
put into practice.

- FCW,

when we were there, was like a
desert island.

Nobody was paying any attention
to it,

so it just gave us that more of
a of a chip on our shoulder

to have the best
performances possible.

- What?

- No way.

- No, no, no.

My gosh.

- I'm sort of taking over talent
development.

At the time, I'm trying to make
it into something bigger,

and really get these guys to
another level.

They're given the opportunity
to step up to the plate

and they took their shot.

- Who the?

What the?

- That's Roman Reigns.

That's Dean Ambrose,
Seth Rollins.

- What the hell are they doing
out here?

- The Shield was three guys out
of that developmental system,

getting an opportunity to go
show what that system

could do in the big level.

I remember thinking to myself,
like,

this group is going to work.

It's going to be big and it's
going to launch whoever's in it.

They came in here and just
showed up and went to town.

It was wonderful to see.

- Their impact was immediate.

It was just really three
strangers showing up.

Before long, they were one of
the most dominant faction ever-

-in a matter of months.

[yelling]

- They were in there with main
event top guys from the jump.

And I'm not just talking about
me.

They're in there with The Rock.

They're in there with John Cena.

They didn't start at the
bottom.

They started right at the top.

And it's sink or swim and those
guys swam laps.

- When you hear their music and
they're coming down through the

crowd, you knew something was
going to happen-

-car wreck was about to happen.

[The Shield's music]

- There was like a synergy to
them as well to where it was

like the sum was greater than
the parts.

Nothing against any of them
separately, but it was just-

That's what kind of group they
were.

- This is The Shield.

- It couldn't have worked out
any more perfectly.

- We are the new kings.

- But they all had their own
part in that,

but they all worked brilliantly
as a unit.

- We were all going through the
same aches and pains-

- Ah.

- -just learn about each other
and each other's past.

Once you develop a friendship
and a and a healthy respect for

each other, you start to be a
little less judgmental of where

these people came from and how
they got to where they are.

We just became brothers very
quickly.

Every time we ever rode
together,

I drove, uce in the back,
usually asleep.

Quick, quick.

- What?

- I was just saying, you know,
he's sleepy, you know.

He's just-

- Ah.

- He's got a rest.

- We treated each other like
brothers on the road, traveling,

you know, it wasn't just like on
camera.

We really kind of
created a bond

that became very authentic
and very real.

- We were always talking, always
thinking,

always bouncing ideas
off each other.

Always looking out for each
other.

We were going to be there for
each other.

But Roman and I, I mean, we
worked well together.

[yelling]

And he listened and learned
really quickly.

[crowd yells]

- One, two, three.

- When you're in a tag team
or a group,

there's competition
between that group.

And whenever one person does
something,

the other person wants to-

-be a little bit higher.

[yelling]

- We completely
understood that

we're competing
against each other.

It's always going to make you
better

because iron sharpens iron.

We always said that.

We always knew it.

- Rollins and Reigns tag team
champions.

- In the most healthy way,

we were butting heads.

That's the mindset I've always
had,

and I just want to show him
better than him.

- I remember I was not in WWE
yet, but I was still friends

with Seth and he would tell me
he's like, "Yeah, you know,

I'm just trying to keep up with
Roman.

They really like Roman."

I'm like, "The fans or like?"

"The company too.

I'm just trying-"

You know what I mean?

- Everything we'd seen from
The Shield was that they were

the most tight unit imaginable.

- The men standing in this ring
are brothers.

- It looked like the world was
completely opening

up for The Shield.

Nothing could go wrong until it
did.

[crowd yells]

- Oh my God.

Are you kidding me?

- There's always a plan B.

Oh my God.

- Seth Rollins turned on Roman
by hitting him with a chair.

- Yeah, it was pretty shocking
because at the time,

The Shield was still so strong,
still so dominant,

still so popular.

It's one of the most shocking
turns.

- They still had all their
steam.

- Yeah, there was no.

And you know, sometimes you
always see when a tag team is

going to break up, you see
cracks in the foundation.

There were no cracks at all.

It was a complete 180.

- Man, I honestly, it's one of
those moments that gets replayed

so many times that I don't have
a first person experience of it.

Like, I can't picture myself
holding the chair.

I can't picture myself

seeing it as I'm beating them
with the chair.

I can't see any of that.

It's a very surreal experience
to know that I was the person

that lived those images.

- You guys are on top of the
world.

Why in the world would Seth
Rollins do this?

- I trusted him.

The bond that
we had was very real

and the trust was very real.

Then he just smashed it all and
he left.

- I am the one who created
The Shield,

and I am the one who
has destroyed it.

- There is only one man, a ring
general like no other,

and he is the future of the WWE.

Seth Rollins.

He started to succeed at the
moment

when he was branching
out of The Shield.

He knew with the Authority's
support,

sky was the limit for him.

- A lot of people, including the
other members of The Shield,

think that Seth Rollins sold out
to Triple H and The Authority.

- Staying in your comfort zone
makes for a boring television.

I think it's important to change
and reinvent

and, uh, challenge yourself.

- I just feel like there was so
much greatness

for The Shield to be had

and then it was done.

- You know, when you start out
in a group, it's tough to go out

on your own because you're used
to doing things as a team,

so you become comfortable with
that.

When you go out on your own,
there's nobody looking back

in the mirror except yourself.

You got to take the good and you
got to take the bad.

- Now you're a man on a wire
with no net.

So it was very scary.

And you're in there with the big
fish, you know?

I got Randy Orton
to my left.

I got Triple H, Stephanie
McMahon.

I've got all these people who
are right there.

It was very nerve wracking for
me, uh,

personally and professionally.

- Everybody wants to be that
guy.

You have to have a mindset
that if you're going to lead,

you can't lead by just a little.

You have to get so far ahead of
number two

that they can't even see
your tail lights.

And then you have to stay out
there.

- Seth Rollins, he's going to
climb to the top.

He's going to grab the
briefcase.

What this means is Seth Rollins
has a contract that he can cash

in anytime for a WWE World Title
opportunity.

- It was a big moment for Seth
Rollins because Seth Rollins

knew at that point in time he
had a chip in the game,

and he was going to have
a hell of a future

in WWE if he just kept on that
trajectory on that right track.

- When Roman Reigns came in, we
were full of piss and vinegar,

but now we got to where we
wanted to go and we really

started to cement ourselves as
the top guys in the company.

- And here he comes,
Roman Reigns.

Spear.

Roman Reigns is going to
WrestleMania.

- You can look at Roman and
tell-

yeah, he's a star.

But when you can tell that the
company is trying to make you

the face of the company,
you know,

sometimes that can
be a tough hurdle,

and I think I think Roman kind
of faced

that a little bit early on.

- I wasn't ready.

I think it created an insecurity
which then created an obsession,

relentlessly pursuing to be the
top echelon of this business.

And it was all just happening so
fast for me.

- Welcome to WrestleMania.

- Roman Reigns is walking in to
his first WWE World Heavyweight

Championship match tonight.

- Roman's been climbing that
ladder, climbing that ladder,

and he finally gets up there and
he's got Brock Lesnar.

- That's the man that Roman
Reigns goes toe to toe

and face to face with tonight.

- And here we go.

And Roman Reigns wasting a
little time going on the attack.

- Now that Seth is on his own,
he wins Money in the Bank and

goes on to have one of the
greatest cash ins.

- It was such an exciting
moment.

Biggest way possible to do it.

And he ended up winning the
title before Roman.

So I think he felt pretty good
about that.

Because of their competitive
nature,

it had to sting for Roman.

- We weren't together anymore.

It stopped being so much about
looking out for each other, and

we were more looking out for
ourselves.

- That main event was almost a
validation that what I felt when

The Shield broke up was correct.

That it wasn't ready.

And by Seth pulling the trigger,

he signed the dotted line to
confirm it.

My only goal was to be able to
show that-

no matter the mountain,
I'm willing to climb.

Did I get the job done tonight?

No.

Did I represent?

In my heart,
I feel like I did.

[clapping]

- You become so
passionate about

what they're so
passionate about.

And seeing their highs and their
lows and all these things.

And then when they have these
moments where they succeed

at a level that they only
dreamed about,

and you can see how
excited they are.

You're so excited for them.

- I'm 29 years old.

I'm in great shape on the run of
a lifetime,

was able to kind of move through
the fall and have

some really cool,
exciting moments.

- Rollins is going to win the US
title.

- And we were getting ready

to get back to working with
Roman again.

Unfortunately, when you-

when you wrestle 200 times a
year,

bad things can happen.

I was doing a move that I'd done
literally a million times,

and I landed awkwardly
and felt the knee pop

and everything went
south from there.

Got the news within 48 hours
that it was a torn ACL,

and it was going to need to have
surgery pretty quickly

and, uh, vacate the title,

and I was in a bad, bad place.

That was a really tough for me.

- Our main event, The Game
Triple H, the champion,

the challenger, Roman Reigns.

- I did not want to be in
Dallas.

And then being up in the box and
watching the show,

and I remember just not being
able to enjoy anything.

- Got to be able to hold up.

That's the part of the job here.

I was the more durable one.

Was it misfortune on his behalf?

Or was it good things come to
those who wait?

- Injuries-

especially as athletes.

It can be really, really tough
times emotionally for people.

- You know that in your mind,

that's your spot.

- Right.

- And that person is taking your
spot,

and you're sidelined because of
an unfortunate accident.

You don't- you don't
really want to be there.

- Reigns is the champion.

Reigns is the WWE World
Heavyweight Champion.

- I was a World Heavyweight
Champion

just a few months ago.

You know, one of the biggest
names,

and I felt like I couldn't
have been smaller.

- After that night at Mania 32,

I started to really get my
footing

in that main event
scene.

- Tonight, Roman Reigns will
battle AJ Styles.

- I go up to Newark.

I'm hiding on a bus.

I'm like, here we go.

I just didn't think anybody was
going to care.

I didn't think he was going to
matter that much, you know?

I thought it was just going to
be like,

"Oh, great. He's back. Woo hoo."

You know?

- AJ Styles went for the-

- Oh my God.

Spear out of midair.

- He cut him in half

- Spear out of mid-air.

Roman Reigns retains the title.

- That's why-

- Oh my God.

- What?

It's Seth Rollins.

It's Seth Rollins.

A Pedigree.

Seth Rollins is back.

- It was a really nice feeling
to get out there and and hear

the reaction from the people.

- It was Seth's way of saying,

"I'm back and I'm
better than ever."

So now you have the story back
in full swing.

- And it sets up what's to come.

- Seven months I have waited to
come back

and take the title that
I never lost.

- I would have been willing to
compete with anybody,

but the obvious choice was
to go back to Seth.

- Back in November, Seth Rollins
suffered a serious knee injury,

forced to vacate the
championship.

Tonight, he's coming to get what
he calls "His title."

bigger than any rivalry

that the two could ever have.

- It was good to see him there.

For leukemia,

if you caught it in an early
enough stage like I did,

you were able to take
essentially a medication,

a very potent medication that
I'm still on to this day.

- So good to see you.

- It has been a long road back
for that man.

- Physically speaking,

Roman Reigns looks as healthy
as I've ever seen him.

- I'm in remission, y'all.

- And this is the portion of
time where nothing

was going to be the same.

- During the pandemic, Roman and
Seth both had this incredible

opportunity to turn lemons into
lemonade

by reinventing themselves.

- It was time to establish a new
character and go in a different

direction and see where that
took us.

I am a visionary.

I am a revolutionary.

I am Seth 'Freakin' Rollins.

- Seth Rollins is willing to
entertain himself.

He's willing to laugh at
himself.

When I look at Roman,

everything about Roman is no
nonsense.

- When you have this kind of

all you got to do is

he is a WWE superstar.

Roman Reigns isn't here 365 days
a year.

He's here for the big events.

- I knew I could out wrestle
him,

him,

but it didn't matter.

I operate better when I have a
chip on my shoulder.

Even if I had no reason to put a
chip on my shoulder,

I was going to find a reason.

- There's always something there
with Roman and Seth.

- The one thing Roman Reigns has
not been able to get over

the dissolution of The Shield.

I think in that match.

it's almost like a divorce.

so I was very happy about that,

but Roman and I is a
WrestleMania match.

Rumble.

- These two guys could have a
match anytime.

I feel like they're always going
to be intertwined.

- You know, as much as they
might have competitive nature

now between them,
I don't think Seth would be

where he is without Roman,
and Roman wouldn't be

where he is without Seth.

- The biggest tag team match in
WrestleMania history.

Roman Reigns and The Rock.

- Guys like Roman and Seth,
you know, have to always be on

because wherever they go,
they're going to be looked

at as the main event guys.

There's very, very few guys that
can pull that off.

I mean, Undertaker's one,

you know, John Cena is another,

The Rock's another.

I mean, there's very few guys
that have figured out the art

form and really, really hang on
to their spot

no matter what happens.

- When you think of Roman and
Seth, they're both so different,

but they're both two people that
are leading the way in WWE

and inspiring the
next generation.

- The amount of history they've
had from the night

they debuted to
where they are now.

years down the line still,

and I think they're always
going to be fueled by

wanting to be better
than the other.

- It's Seth Rollins.

A Pedigree.

are,

because it didn't just
stop at The Shield.

We kept pushing.

But there's really only one
reason why I'm better than him-

because I wanted to be.

- Two men who grew up

in this business together.

- We're always going to look at
each other with an understanding

that we couldn't have done this
without each other.

think is unbreakable.
