No matter how big somebody was,

there was always that next
level.

The Undertaker.

- Triple H and The Undertaker,

their rivalry spanned over a
decade.

- He and I have an opportunity
to do something here special.

- A brawl with criminal
intentions.

- We were killing each other.

You-you got to gear yourself up
for that [bleep].

- They're like the last two
toughest guys in the prison yard

from a bygone generation.

- You have only one thing left,

and it's the streak,

and when it dies, you die.

- The streak will still be
alive,

and so will I.

- I am coming to end your
career.

- I don't know how much more
personal it can get.

- When two legends collide,

their rivalry stays pinned in
our minds forever.

This is where we break down the
legendary stories

behind the greatest rivalries of
all time.

- Undertaker,

at WrestleMania,

You will rest in
peace.

- Triple H versus
The Undertaker.

Wow.

That's-that's the best way to
start it.

Wow.

- Those guys were they were the
backbone of our company

for decades.

- Yeah, and the fact they've had
multiple Manias together

is a testament to that.

- You want this?

You want WrestleMania?

- These matches, they build in
intensity and blood and guts.

That's as good as it gets.

- You go to war, but you respect
the fact that this person gave

you everything that they had,

you know, because that's what
you crave.

like, if you want to be the
best, you want to be on top.

You want to go up
against the best.

[The Undertaker's music]

- There's nothing that I've been
any more passionate

about in my life

than being a professional
wrestler.

- The agility and athleticism of
The Undertaker.

- Taker was the measuring
stick to me.

There was a different
aura about him.

Just steady, always there,
always a professional,

always above and beyond.

- You will rest in peace.

- Million people could have been
given that Undertaker character,

and probably the majority of
them would have failed.

You needed Mark Calaway to make
The Undertaker great.

- I draw strength from the
spirit of the dead.

- You know how you earn your
respect for a Taker.

Like going out there and doing
business with him

and holding your own.

- He was hard to get to know.

He was standoffish
to most people

and intimidating to talk to.

So that that Undertaker persona
lived with him everywhere.

So, you know, if you saw him in
the airport,

you knew it was The Undertaker.

No matter who was with him,

he looked like he was the king
court.

- It was like a pack of wolves,
right?

He was the alpha.

- But you had to earn his trust

and you had to earn
his friendship.

I'd say hello to him and stuff.

I don't think from
his point of view,

maybe that there
was a trust there

because I became friends with
Shawn, and,

you know, that comes with a
lot of baggage.

- You're a friend of mine,

you don't have a chance in this
business.

[laughing]

- Everybody liked Hunter.

Everybody hated me.

Mark and I, we didn't know each
other very well,

but we just figured what we knew
we didn't like.

- It was just his demeanor

all around as a human being
back then.

I had no use for him whatsoever.

- Whoa, whoa.

- Initially, this young guy
coming in

and buddying up with
Shawn, it's like,

"Oh, man, it's
a red flag to me."

- Shawn the giant.

[laughing]

- Shawn-dray

- But he worked his tail off.

That's what I always notice
about people.

Their desire to get better.

- Down across the knee.

- I just remember there was a
moment we were all out,

and I remember seeing him at the
bar that night.

Every now and then I'd catch his
eye and I would just see him

just like burning a hole in me.

He, like, gives me the nod,
like, "Come down here."

He's got two shots of Jack
Daniels.

We both do the shot.

Puts his hand on my back and
he goes,

"You're okay with me, man.

You're okay."

I was like, "All right [bleep]
yeah.

All right."

He was a guy I gave a [bleep]

if he respected me or not
because

he had my respect
at that highest of levels.

- Welcome to Amtrak's night
train to hell.

[laughing]

- One of their first encounters
was on an episode of an old show

called Shotgun Saturday Night.

- The Undertaker against
Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

- So Shotgun Saturday Night, we
shot throughout New York City.

You got- you got two guys in a
wrestling match

in the middle of Penn Station.

The match gets out of control.

We're fighting through the
crowd.

- And The Undertaker hot on his
heels and,

and no, no, no, no, no,

Oh, no.

Help.

Up on the-

Help.

He's gonna, he's gonna.

- Wait a minute.

- Oh no.

- We had done this tombstone on
the escalator.

- If I'm not mistaken,

I want to say that was his idea.

- When we came back from it, he
was like,

"Dude, that was awesome."

You got to gear yourself up
for that [bleep].

- Triple H, he's always been a
student of the game,

and when his time came,
he was ready

and he dominated.

- This is about me.

It's about me reaching my goals.

You guys talk about being
students of the game.

I am The [bleep] Game JR.

[Triple H's music]

- It was a game changing moment
for my character.

Now all of a sudden this guy
will go through anything

if it means being the top guy.

- Straight through the-

- No no.

- Good God.

- He's got that fighting spirit
in him.

Well, The Undertaker was the
same.

- Oh my God.

It's The Undertaker.

- What?

- As great a character as
The Undertaker persona is,

our business was changing.

Everybody was just cutting
loose.

What ended up happening is

I turned into the American
Badass.

If you got a beef with me,

I ain't a hard guy to find.

I stand six foot ten.

I weigh 330 pounds,

and I'm usually kicking the hell
out of somebody.

What else am I about?

Of course, motorcycles

and being an ass
kicker and all that.

It just kind of fell together.

- A day or two off Mark until
you get back?

- We were rolling into
WrestleMania,

and Vince comes to me.

He's like, "You should have
something and it should be big.

I just don't have anything for
you at WrestleMania."

I was [bleep] devastated.

So a little while later, Taker
comes out of Vince's office.

I can see the look on his face.

He's pissed and I'm like,
"What's going on?"

And he's like, "I just [bleep]
talk to the old man."

He's like, "[bleep] nothing at
WrestleMania."

- And this is crazy to me.

Like, it's The Undertaker and
Triple H,

and neither of us have
opponents.

- And we both like, "Oh
[bleep]."

And like, [bleep] went right
back in his office, like,

you know what I mean?

Like, [bleep] yeah, right?

Physically and mentally,

I am superior

to anyone else that dares
to step in this ring.

[The Undertaker's music]

- Wait a minute.

What's this?

The Undertaker?

- When you walk through here,

through these ropes,

bad things happen in my yard.

- Going into WrestleMania 17,

your shiny object was Rock
and Stone Cold.

And sometimes you can overlook

this diamond over here,

and this ruby over here.

And that's what happened with
Undertaker and Triple H

at WrestleMania 17.

- And if you try me,
I'll make you famous.

- The Undertaker is here.

Wait a minute.

It's Triple H.

Triple H ambushing the
Undertaker.

- No, they're going too far.

Triple H is going too far now.

Had to make it interesting
quick,

and we did.

- Oh my God.

- End up getting hit with the
sledgehammer.

- Oh, sledgehammer to the head
of The Undertaker.

- And, brother, I bled,

like a stuck pig.

- It was main event color for
sure.

- Oh, my God, look at the
Undertaker's eyes.

Can you imagine what
The Undertaker

is going to want
to do to The Game?

There's going to be some serious
hell to pay.

- We welcome you to
WrestleMania 17.

- It's WrestleMania X-7
2001.

What an incredible night.

- We were on this amazing ride,

this Attitude ERA where
anything goes.

- Man, we're in the Astrodome.

I mean, this was awesome.

You know, we hadn't done stadium
shows in quite a while,

and all of a sudden now

we're selling out this massive
building.

- The roof may come off
momentarily

because the Undertaker and
Triple H ready to get it on.

- I felt like he and I had an

opportunity to do something
here special.

And both of us, I think, had a
little bit of an attitude of

like, "[bleep], you have nothing
for me, okay."

You know?

- Houston's own Undertaker,

arriving here at a high rate
of speed.

- 17, was in Houston,
my hometown.

My dream is to ride my own
motorcycle into the Astrodome.

I think we both were like,

"uh, whoever follows us is going
to have a really hard time."

- The Game has beat the best in
the business,

but he has never defeated
The Undertaker.

- You have two juggernauts,
clearly.

- They were hitting each other

like hitting each other
really hard.

It was crazy.

- One of the cool things about
working with Paul,

we were always on the same page,

making the whole thing epic

and the whole fight through the-
through the crowd,

and up on the rigging.

- I learned that with him all
the time, you know, like,

if you're hittin' Taker with a
chair shot,

hit Taker with a chair shot.

If you don't cream him with it,

he's going to be mad.

That's the sort of how I looked
at it in my career as well.

Hit me safe.

Hit me really hard.

I'd rather do that than have it
look bad.

- Oh, my.

- Triple H about to hit the
Undertaker between the eyes

with a steel chair and got
caught.

Oh my God, look out.

Triple H just

went out of
sight.

- With bumps like that, it's
pretty hard for me,

like, "Hey, what do you think
about this?

I'm going to Chokeslam you off
this ring."

- Wait a minute.

The Undertaker, oh, just drove
his elbow

right into the heart of
The Game.

[yelling]

- I remember picking him up for
the Last Ride,

and he whacks me with the dang
thing.

He ended up dinging me with the
handle of the-

of the sledgehammer and busted
me open again.

- What does it take?

What does it take to stop the
Undertaker?

- And now The Game,

like a shark tasting blood.

- Triple H has him.

Oh, no.

- Oh the Last Ride,

The Undertaker
came out with a Last Ride.

- To me, it was like the start
of a friendship.

I could begin to see Mark,
not Taker.

When Steph and I got together,

and we're starting to have
a relationship.

The guy that I talked to about
it was Taker.

- You know, I was kind of like,
"Hey, you love her?"

He goes, "Yeah, yeah, I love
her."

You know, I said,

"You got my blessing,
brother."

- Anyway, yeah.

Good luck.

It's all downhill from here all
right?

[laughing]

- Over the years that grew and,
you know, he was in our wedding

at a certain point in time, the
one guy that could relate to

everything that you had been
through was Taker.

- I personally didn't

even realize there was a streak

until my 10th WrestleMania.

I'm standing on the apron

and I kind of do the thing
with my fingers.

You know, where I count them out
and you know it was 10-0.

- That streak is a huge part of
The Undertaker's legacy.

- 11-0 at WrestleMania.

- 12-0

- 13-0

- Undertaker is 14-0.

- Taking on Taker at
WrestleMania,

trying to end the streak,

it was almost unthinkable that
anybody could do it.

But yet challenger after
challenger after challenger

after challenger would come in
and try to beat the streak.

If you could take that streak
down,

that's the biggest thing you
could accomplish

in the business.

- You have never beaten me,

and you never will.

- You know, look, there's a
period of time when

Taker probably wanted to kill
Shawn in real life.

Right?

And then-
then over time,

they become
very close friends.

And there's a massive respect
level there on from both.

- Tombstone.

- Tombstone.

Piledriver.

- 17-0.

- Those two matches at
WrestleMania 25 and 26 were

completely off the chart and

storytelling at its finest.

- If I beat you,

your career is over.

- Shawn Michaels is going out.

He's going out a s defiant as
ever.

The Undertaker is 18-0.

- Shawn Michaels career is over.

[clapping]

- It fell into place, so I take
his career.

Everyone at this point knows the
relationship, obviously,

Shawn and Triple H.

- You feel the story.

- Going back to Shawn's legacy
at WrestleMania.

They literally call him Mr.
WrestleMania.

If Mr. WrestleMania couldn't
even beat-

- Yeah.

- -Taker at WrestleMania,

they set an impossible stage
to follow.

[The Undertake's music]

- Sometimes less is more.

That situation was a prime
example.

[Triple H's music]

- I know that we went and
pitched it to Vince

where we were just like, "What
if we don't say anything?"

- "You're not going to say a
word?"

I said, "We're not going to need
to."

Just the whole time we were in
the ring, I just had goosebumps.

[bleep] like, "Holy [bleep],
this is [bleep] so badass."

- I knew exactly what was about
to happen.

Well, The Game confronts the
Dead Man

just six days before their epic
encounter at WrestleMania.

- What in the world makes you
think

that you can do what I couldn't?

- The Undertaker's streak is
just continuing to grow and grow

and grow, and it's like, "Who's
going to be able to even,

you know, touch that?

- Right.

- I think Triple H liked the
challenge, though.

- I remember leading up to the
match, Triple H talking about

how he's going to have to step
into a dark place.

- Dead Man at WrestleMania,

you have only one thing left,
and it's the streak.

And when it dies,

you die.

- His body was just
trash at this point.

We knew that both hips needed to
be replaced.

We knew that his right knee

definitely needed to be
replaced,

most likely his left.

You know, he's had shoulder
surgery.

He's busted his orbital socket
twice,

where he still sees double
to this day.

- At that point in my career,

uh, for me to have a
WrestleMania match,

I'm probably three, maybe
four injections

directly into my hip socket, uh,
just to kinda nullify the pain

enough so that I could actually
move.

Uh, every step that I took,
it felt like somebody had taken

like a blowtorch and just put it
on my joint.

- He saw the way his body was

reacting in a way that it
hadn't before.

That he was sort of breaking
down.

And his reaction was,

"I'm going to just keep going at
100 miles an hour.

See if I can go any faster."

- As we get older, our bodies
are ravaged from injuries,

but still, there's an
expectation.

When people pay money,

they want to see a bigger than
life human being,

and they want to see a guy

that can kick somebody's ass.

- This is WrestleMania.

This is the showcase of the
Immortals.

The electricity is in the air.

It's all around us.

Can you feel it?

[fireworks]

- When we got to 27,

I remember having a conversation
with Taker where he was telling

me about the anxiety that he
felt and how bad it was.

And I remember that being mind
blowing to me.

Like, "This is
The [bleep] Undertaker."

It was hard for me to
contemplate

that he had those doubts that I
did.

- It's hard to simulate those-
those kind of moments

where you have, you know,

crowds in excess of 70,000
people there.

And when it's go time, it's like
no other time I've ever been in.

- We are seeing two blocks of
granite on which the foundation

of WWE has been built.

- Ring the bell.

- Match is underway.

No Holds Barred match must be
won in the ring,

but anything goes.

- I was there when they went to
the ring, and I dashed up to my,

uh, to my little skybox.

And watched it from up there,
and, uh,

I remember it being physical.

- Oh my God.

Power of The Undertaker.

- Oh, gosh.

- Again, high impact.

- If you go into a match not
wanting to beat the hell out of

the guy you're working with,
it's a problem.

And both of those guys, uh,
Triple H and The Undertaker.

I think if you ask those guys
that question, they would say,

"Yeah, I'm going to go out and
beat the hell out of that guy."

And that's the true wrestler
mentality.

- I was doing good all the way
up until the time

I did the big dive over the top,

and then it was like I didn't
get a shot or anything.

It was just like all that
medication just left my body.

You could actually feel it at
that intensity

with all that adrenaline
going on.

I mean, I knew that the hip was
on its last days there.

- Uh oh.

But I wouldn't want to be
Triple H right now.

Oh.

- The resounding splat of steel
on the human anatomy.

- I don't remember hitting
anybody any harder

than I'd hit him,

knowing in the back of my
mind that

neither one of us would have
accepted anything less.

- I think those two guys also
knew the importance

of this match, you know,

and they knew that what you do
at WrestleMania lives forever.

- And The Game again trying
to hit that Pedigree.

- Got him.

- The Game's got the cover.

He's hooked the near leg.

History is going to be heading-

Oh, my.

The Undertaker.

I cannot believe what I have
seen.

Now the steel chair.

Oh.

This chair.

It is warped and bent.

with the shapes of two men.

- Stay down

- Look-

barbaric, caveman mentality,
whatever you want to call it.

It was what was needed to tell
the story,

the way the story needed to be
told.

[yelling]

- I wore that mother [bleep]
out with a chair.

I would expect nothing less

than those chair shots being
that hard.

- The Undertaker trying to pull
himself-

everything he's got.

Everything The Undertaker has
left.

- Stay down.

- This is one of the
most brutal matches

I've ever seen between
the two.

- It's just iconic.

It's iconic because you know
what it's going to take

to beat Undertaker.

- We know when we get into this
business

the toll it's going
to take on you.

But it's still worth it

to be able to go out there and
create moments like that.

- Will The Game be the one or
will The Undertaker be 19-0?

No, no, come on.

This is too much.

Oh, the tombstone of the
Undertaker.

- Streak had become such a big
thing,

and I think as a fan,
subconsciously, you know, like,

"Man, this guy's had a long
career," and wondering, like,

"When is he going to retire?

How is he going to hang this
up?"

- Wait, Undertaker with a Hell's
Gate submission.

Triple H trying to find the
hammer.

Tryin' to find an escape.

The Game taps.

The Game had to tap out.

The Undertaker is 19-0.

- We don't talk about it very
often,

but after 27,
they carted me off,

and that was
pretty much legit.

I was in rough shape.

- That's a weird thing
about our business.

It's my friend,

and I just [bleep] halfway
killed him with a chair.

That's the way we did it.

- You go harder with the ones
you love.

You can beat the living tar out
of one another,

hug it out backstage and know
that they really do love you.

- My hip is trash,

so I called Doctor Bird.

And, I was just like,

"Yeah, doc, I-I think it's
time."

And he goes, "Mark, it was time
12 years ago.

Your hip is one of the worst
hips that I've ever seen."

And now this is at the later
part of my career.

The years have taken its toll.

The old school mentality.

You just suck it up and you go
out and you work.

Once I was cleared,

went right into training for
Mania again.

I had my left hip replaced.

So not only do I have the
pressure

of getting back from that,

but we also have
the pressure of outdoing

what we did in Atlanta.

Every passing moment of every
passing day,

I have lived the memory of the
beating that I took

at the hands of Triple H last
year at WrestleMania.

So The Undertaker, this
character who has been in such

mental control, is now in this
situation where he's beside

himself because this guy left
him vulnerable.

- I understand how bad
you want this.

I know what I have to do to beat
you.

I have to finish you.

I'm not going to do it.

- That's hard to get
to WrestleMania.

It's hard to be on WrestleMania,

and to be able to do this,

and create a storyline that is
this hot is quite incredible

that they were able to do that.

- You know, Hunter.

I think I just figured it out.

You know that you can't do

what your buddy Shawn
Michaels couldn't do.

Because, you know, Shawn was
always better than you.

- I will face you at
WrestleMania.

Under one condition.

Hell in a Cell.

Taker had more Hell in a Cell
matches than anybody.

And we had kind of both become
synonymous with that match.

Hell of a Cell for me was the
ultimate blow off match.

I was there for the first one
with Taker and Shawn.

I'd never seen anything like it.

And it blew my mind.

- The steel girders are bending,
they're about to break.

- And then you go to the Mick
and Taker one.

There was nothing ever like it.

- Look out.

- Oh no.

- Good God Almighty.

Good God Almighty.

It killed him.

- If you've ever been inside of
one of those structures,

there's no way to fake how that
feels up against your skin.

You know that it's going to be
intense.

You know that it's going to be
violent.

- I watched you go out there

and beat him with nearly an
inch of his life.

And then you lost.

This year at WrestleMania
Hell in a Cell,

I know who's going to win,
and I'll be right again.

- I think Shawn respects Taker,
but there's also a part of him

that doesn't want Triple H,
even though he's his friend

and he loves him, he doesn't
want Triple H to be the guy

that beats The Undertaker at
WrestleMania

because he couldn't do it.

- I'm sorry.

And the reason I know that

is because I've been made
the special referee.

"We were thinking about,
you know,

adding you as special
referee.

What do you say?"

It's like, "Oh.

Are you kiddin'?

Yes."

Those are my friends.

I spent as much time with Hunter
and Mark than I-

as I have with my
children.

Probably more.

- I love you.

- All right, let's do it.

[bell rings]

- Ladies and gentlemen, this
match is the end of an era.

- When we said end of an era,

it-it not only was meaningful,
storyline wise,

and to have that come full
circle for you,

but I think it sort of told a
story of-of a generation

of the
guys in that era.

None of us would step foot in
in that ring together

at that level.

It was sort of the end.

- We knew it was going
to be brutal.

It was going to be physical,

and we knew it had to be.

And once again, it was Triple H
wanting to be the best.

The Undertaker wanting
to be the best,

and wanting to be the best on
that card that night.

- And here we go.

End of an era.

Triple H and The Undertaker.

- How do you take it to the next
level?

Well, Hell in a Cell.

It's a recipe for disaster.

- I mean, you actually believe

that Triple H had a legitimate
chance

of beating The Undertaker,
which was incredibly hard to do

because you had that streak
behind it.

- They're like the last two
toughest guys in the prison yard

from a bygone generation.

When these two hooked up, like,

everybody in the yard
was watching it.

And you know, they're-they're
legends for a reason.

- It's like they were almost
having that match

not just for themselves, but
everyone from their era.

They just really left it all out
there.

- And now you've got not only
come back from a hip,

but you've gotta top
what you did the year before.

- I remember Paul, we were going
back and forth and we felt like

we might need a little extra
sumpin' sumpin'

and he just told me he goes,
"Hard way me."

And I'm like, "What?"

He goes, "Hard way."

So he took three pretty good
right hands to bubble up his eye

and bust him open a little bit,

as they say, "The hard way."

- I certainly would be the last
man to count out Triple H.

- Oh, no.

Oh, no.

Oh, my God.

- Flat on the spine of
The Undertaker on the steps.

- Oh, look at- look at this.

Look at this, look at this.

Hell's Gate.

Hell's Gate.

Hell's Gate.

- When you're retired and you're
in there,

it's again having an
appreciation for what it is

we do to ourselves
and what we put

ourselves through for so long.

- And look-

Oh my God.

Oh, the strength.

The strength.

- And now, when I had stopped
doing it,

I'm watching these two do it to
each other.

And I'm like, "Damn."

- Watch out.

Head first.

- You two are
murdering each other.

I mean, absolutely blistering
one another.

- I remember hitting him with a
chair

and Shawn coming by me at
one point.

He was like, "[bleep],

with the chair shot, you're
gonna [bleep] kill each other."

- How can it be too much when
there are no rules.

- You know, Shawn just was
emotional about it,

trying to get us to calm the
[bleep] down.

- And the Dead Man goes down
again.

Finally the cover.

Finally the cover.

Will it be the streak will end?

No, it will not end.

- You want it done?

Then you end it.

- Just cover him.

- Once you add Shawn to the mix.

It could be very easy two on
one.

He always brings that specific
degree of drama.

- Do it.

- It looked like Michaels was
thinking about

stuffing the match.

- Can he achieve what I
couldn't?

I'm this close to taking a
shortcut.

If I can feel like I have
avenged what happened to me.

- Don't stop it Shawn.

- End it, Shawn, or I will.

End it or I will.

- Oh, for the love of God,
not the sledgehammer.

- It's conflict.

- What is this?

- Taker's got the Hell's Gate on
Shawn Michaels.

- Oh, look it, look it, look it.

from, oh, the sledgehammer.

- And now our only official has
been obviously incapacitated.

- When people see Triple H
versus Undertaker,

they have expectations.

I want them going like,

"Holy crap."

- Thunderous Chokeslam.

The count of three.

Oh.

The Game kicked out.

- Did he get him, what?

- Oh no.

No, no.

Oh my God.

The Dead Man riseth.

- Oh, no.

What?

Oh.

- Sweet chin music.

Sweet chin music.

- Look at this.

- That moment of the superkick
into the Pedigree.

- A Pedigree.

Pedigree.

- If there's not a hook, line
and sinker moment where people

knew that streak was ending and
the holy [bleep] factor of that,

I don't know what that bigger
moment is.

- Streak's over.

Streak's over.

- My God the count.

It's not over.

It's not over.

The streak lives.

- You have Triple H and
Undertaker.

Everyone knew that it was coming
to an end.

And to have Shawn Michaels be
the special guest referee.

And then, like, the-

I'm getting goosebumps

even, like, thinking about this
man.

- And stuffs out the-

oh, Sweet Chin Music.

- I'm really not one to put my
own stuff over.

- Sweet Chin Music and a
Pedigree.

- But I believe that that may be
the best false finish

that I've ever seen.

More so than at any other point
in any other WrestleMania match.

They thought the streak was
going to get broke.

- Michaels was put into a very
tough position.

The emotion overcoming The Game
with his obsession.

- Oh, oh my God.

- Those guys are masters of
their craft.

And I think that match,

that rivalry is years of
experience on the job

doing what they do best.

- He is truly superhuman.

How's he doing this?

This is it.

- God, I can't believe what I'm
seeing.

- Neither can The Undertaker.

- The Game-

Lunging.

There's not enough gas left in
the tank.

Undertaker shaking his head.

- I think that match,

yeah, man.

I mean, it speaks for itself,
right?

And it really it did.

It did a great job of putting a
button on it.

Right?

This is done.
