Original subtitles

- Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage.

This rivalry had it all.

Love, hate, jealousy, betrayal.

- It's simple storytelling.

- He nailed him.

And runs into The "Macho Man".

- It's an Avengers type thing.

Like seeing, you know,

Iron Man and Cap work together.

- You know I love you, Macho Man.

I loved you like a brother.

- Sometimes wrestling is like real life.

In Randy's mind Hulk really had a lot of affection

for Miss Liz.

- The lust in your eyes,

gotta be blind not to see it, yeah.

- You could feel the fragile

existence of the two of 'em together.

- That friendship couldn't last because it was all built on

Hulk Hogan's lies.

- That's when you turned the love to hatred, Macho Man.

- He ain't got character.

He ain't got the guts.

- It was the perfect storm.

When we explode, it's going to be the greatest

natural disaster of all time.

- You're out of line.

- So much animosity in this awesome rivalry.

- When two legends collide,

their rivalry stays pinned in our minds forever.

This is where we break down the the legendary stories

behind the greatest rivalries of all time.

I'm Gabriel Iglesias,

and this is

WWE Rivals.

- Listen to this Hulk Hogan.

I hate you.

I hate your guts.

Come on.

- Wait a minute, gentlemen.

- What a way to kick off this show.

Hulk Hogan versus Randy "Macho Man" Savage

as a kid watching this growing up, man, this-

it didn't get any bigger.

- Together, these two changed WWE history.

Hogan and Savage,

They brought a complete spark for wrestling

and for Sports Entertainment.

And that effect is still on us today.

- Hogan was so much bigger than life and you always wondered

who would ever be able to kind of match with him.

With Savage's intensity-

- I'm slapping you in the face when I say it,

and I'm saying it again, yeah.

- He was the perfect foil.

- Right into the barricade and over it goes.

Double axe handle.

- When you look at a lot of the larger than life characters

of the 80's,

Randy was the first person that came to mind.

- And at WrestleMania 5, Macho Man

with all my Hulkamaniacs on my side,

I'm going to end the madness, brother.

- The old thing of being larger than life so that people in the

cheap seats can see you.

- Yep.

- That's Hogan, and he did it magically.

- Get mean. Get mean.

Hulkamania. Hulkamania, come on.

- I got it man.

- Dip it. Dip it.

- I got it man.

- Harder, Harder Come on, come on.

- Well, in 85, it was

firing on all eight cylinders.

It was wide open.

Everywhere we went.

We never went through a door.

We were breaking doors down.

- Hogan had this amazing persona to him.

You know, he had a look, he had size, he had a charisma,

the way he spoke.

- I'm not saying that I'm the last great American hero

because that was John Wayne, brother.

But since he died, I'm awful close.

- He understood psychology in the ring.

He understood how to be bigger than everybody else,

but yet be a sympathetic babyface.

- Hulk Hogan, he drops the big leg on him.

We have a new champion.

Hulkamania is here.

- He really was the showbiz side of what we do.

[growling]

- You're in trouble man.

- Now, I love Hulk Hogan.

My daddy's crazy about him.

- You know, your arm is the size of my leg.

- I train, say my prayers, eat my vitamins,

and I even take time out here to come to The Tonight Show.

- He was this ultimate good guy,

and you needed somebody who could challenge him.

And along comes Randy Savage.

- Freaked out. Freaked out.

- Randy "Macho Man" Savage.

- You gotta want it bad, man.

You gotta want it bad.

- Wee Willie,

three feet tall, laying in the middle of the ring.

Savage comes off the rope on across his throat.

- If I spit in your face,

I want you to stand there and take it.

You understand what I'm talking about?

- Savage, hopping off of the ropes, coming over to the desk.

- That's the way it's gonna to be.

- Randy Poffo was a minor league baseball player

who changed his name to Randy Savage

when he joined the family business.

Professional wrestling.

Randy, with his brother

and their father Angelo Poffo,

created their own wrestling promotion based in Kentucky,

and they tried to run shows in and around Memphis.

- Randy would come on TV and challenge me.

Say, "Jerry Lawler, you know, this week when I get you down

in that arena, you know I will- I will beat your brains out.

I'll rip your head off if you show up."

- Man, don't you have no pride?

Don't you have no pride, Jerry Lawler?

Think of your dad, man, being dead, yeah.

Think of your dad being dead, Jerry Lawler.

- Uncouth, goofy son of a gun, that Randy Savage.

- One time Bill "Superstar" Dundee was a big star in our

organization, and he and Randy Savage crossed paths.

- "Superstar" Bill Dundee

pulled out a gun, allegedly

because he felt menaced by Randy Savage.

- Get him out here now.

Get him out right now.

- Randy disarmed him of the gun,

and may well have pistol whipped him.

But again, when I asked Randy about it, he said,

"There's a lot of versions to that story."

- By 1985, Macho Man Randy Savage had earned his reputation

as a wild man.

- When you arrived here on that thing

hey, let's take a break.

Just go to a break.

- Not a lof of people.

not a lot of promoters,

anywhere in the country, or I dare say the world

wanted to book The "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

- The "Macho Man" Randy Savage

making his World Wrestling -- debut.

- So it was a little shocking that

WWE was going to take the

chance on Randy and bring him in.

- He made his TV debut, he was so crazy.

Like his-his eyes were crazy, you know,

and his hair was crazy.

Very athletic.

It was just him jumping off the top rope to the floor

with the axe handles.

Really big deal at the time.

- Oh my goodness.

Attacking from the outside.

- I am the greatest wrestler, bar none.

Understand?

- Well, I-

- Yes I am.

- I didn't know he existed

until he showed up in Poughkeepsie, New York.

And he looked like a smaller wrestler.

And then my first question was "Who's the girl with him?"

- The "Macho Man's"

new manager.

And here

she comes.

- Uh oh, my goodness

- Oh, my.

- So that's Miss Elizabeth.

That's his wife.

And uh I said, "Well, if they're together, this'll work."

- You know, Randy Savage was this tough guy,

and there was Miss Elizabeth.

She was this just delicate, beautiful part of him

that he always wanted to protect.

- I always remember, like growing up, wanting to be like

Miss Elizabeth.

My sisters and I were always like,

"We want to be like Miss Elizabeth."

- He has the most charisma of any wrestler in the world.

He's-he's the best.

- Like that.

Electrifying.

- Randy and Liz were married in real life.

However, on camera, their relationship was never exposed

and it was never talked about.

- She didn't put up with any crap from him.

He really, really admired her and really loved her.

- She just had this innocence about her,

but yeah, she definitely was a contrast to Randy

because Randy was so overprotective.

He was overprotective in an on-air role,

but also we knew that he was kind of like that

at home as well.

- From the first day I met Randy, he was just totally

intense, you know.

He became "The "Macho Man" oh yeah, dig it."

- Join The "Macho Man" Randy Savage bandwagon

before it's too late.

'cause I am the next world Heavyweight Champion, yes I am.

- His intensity did make him great.

He gave it uh 100% effort out there,

uh every time he went out.

Hulkamania is alive and well in Philadelphia.

- You could easily make the argument that this is the

greatest rivalry in the history of WWE.

And it all started September 28th, 1985, in Philadelphia.

- Here's The "Macho Man".

He's looking at all those Hulkster shirts there,

and trying to intimidate.

- He did intimidate those youngsters.

- Once the bell rang with Randy, the chemistry was just like a

constant flow.

- Arm wringer now by the champion.

Whoa, look at him go to work now on the left arm.

I don't think there was ever a more perfect match,

simply because both guys

knew what they were doing in the ring,

and both guys actually wanted to do business.

- Plants that knee right across the throat.

- Elizabeth applauding.

- It was a perfect opponent, perfect nemesis.

I think it was the perfect storm.

- And the Hulk off the ropes with an elbow of his own.

Hooks the leg he got him.

[crowd cheers]

- Look out.

Grabs the World Championship belt, look out below.

- Hulk Hogan won the first match, but immediately after,

Randy Savage brutally attacked him,

letting him know this was a rivalry,

that was going to take him to the limit.

- The champ is down on the floor.

- In 1985, Randy Savage debuted in the WWE.

- They really just thrust Randy right into it.

- Look at the look on the Champ's face.

- Look out.

Just listen-

- He's immune now to those shots.

- You can tell WWE had a lot of faith in Randy Savage.

- Elizabeth looking concerned and rightly so.

- I think he's going to use that belt.

- With the belt, look out below.

Wow, right on the back of the neck of the champion.

- Well, when Randy got in the ring as a performer,

he was real organic and real natural.

He understood the art form.

He understood the pace,

setting up the storyline.

And once you got him in the ring, everything's fine.

The problem was before the ring, that he was just so intense.

Randy calling me at 4 a.m.

to talk about a match was not something that was unusual.

Um, I do remember the one call, which was a little crazy,

where he called me at 4 a.m. and he'd been up all night.

He sounded like he had drank 100 cups of coffee,

and he just didn't want me off the phone

because it was Madison Square Garden, which was a big deal.

When I talked to Liz the next day, she goes,

"Thank you for taking the call.

He was driving me crazy. He was up all night."

- 1986 Hulk Hogan and Macho Man are on fire.

They're tearing down arenas across the country,

including Madison Square Garden.

- Macho Man once again on the outside.

Climbs to the top turnbuckle.

Could be for that patented flying elbow

Yes it is.

He gives that sign, look out.

He nailed him with it.

- Randy amped up Hogan's intensity level,

and Hogan, by virtue of who he was,

elevated Randy to a place he had never been.

[crowd cheers]

- That's Savage

long way down, look out.

Oh no look at that.

The champ rammed into the post again.

[bell rings]

- Referee calling for the bell here.

- The rules of the WWE are that once you leave the ring,

you've got 10 seconds to get back into it,

and if you can't meet the referee's ten count,

you lose via countout.

That night during the height of Hulkamania.

Savage beat Hogan.

- The title can only change hands

on a pinfall or submission,

not on a count out.

- Randy beating me by count out.

It helped, uh,

catapult Randy.

Now he's a threat.

There was egos involved

until the moment we got through those ropes.

And then in the ring, it was all business.

A lot of it had to do with Randy being raised by his dad,

who was a pro wrestler.

- This is what drew people to the "Macho Man's" character.

He decided

that anybody that bought a ticket

was going to get everything he had.

- Unjustifiably, in a position that I'd rather not be in,

but the cream rise to the top, oh yeah.

- I always enjoyed working with Randy

because he was a pro.

Forget the script.

He told the story in his own words.

- 'Cause Hulk Hogan, yeah.

I am the cream, yeah.

The cream of the crop.

- "Yeah, the cream of the crop."

Yeah, that's all ad lib with Randy.

You know, grabbing a little prop there next to Mean Gene,

you know, craft services was a couple feet away so,

all that type of stuff is just all ad lib.

He-he was just brilliant.

- And there is no one that does it better

than The "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

On balance, off balance.

Doesn't matter.

I'm better than you are, yeah.

- "Cream always rises to the top."

- It's just a given that a Macho Man promo

is going to be outstanding.

If you look at the great promos in history,

he's definitely up there.

- The cream of the crop.

Nobody does it better.

- Say you're a heel and you're that entertaining.

You're just a step above.

[crowd cheers]

- What a roar from this capacity crowd.

- I was there in Hershey, Pennsylvania,

when Honky Tonk Man was battling Randy Savage.

- Off the rope- oh nice maneuver.

- The reason WWE turned Savage into a good guy

was because the fans demanded it.

- He leaps.

Yes, a new champion to be crowned.

Brett

That's Brett Hart.

- He's in trouble.

- Look what they're doing.

Look what the Hart Foundation is doing to Randy Savage.

He's raring back.

He's getting ready.

That's it.

End this.

Here it-

Wait a minute.

Oh my goodness.

Elizabeth almost struck by the Honky Tonk Man.

- Oh, no.

Oh no.

- At that instant when I pushed her.

Randy was now a good guy.

- They're starting to cheer Savage, but WWE being smart and

you got to think Hulk Hogan sees that, says,

"I want to be tethered to this guy in some fashion."

- Elizabath is coming back.

What courage and what brilliance this lady has.

With a purpose to bring help

And help she has brought.

The Hulkster hammering away cleaning house.

- That was the origin of the story.

- Yes.

- When the Hart Foundation attacked Randy.

And then Hogan came out.

- Macho Man and the Hulkster.

Elizabeth doesn't want to see 'em go at it,

and I don't think anyone does.

Yes.

They've had their differences in the past, but The "Macho Man"

is extending that hand of friendship to the Hulkster.

We could be seeing the meeting of the Madness

and the Mania.

- Yes.

- There it is.

- As a kid I'm like,

"If Hulk Hogan can see the good in Macho Man Randy Savage,

maybe I should be viewing Macho Man in a different light."

- When I was watching,

I was transported into my ten year old brain.

But you knew deep down inside, something was going to go wrong.

The Mega, yeah.

The Mega Powers, yeah.

Mega Powers, yeah.

- It was the handshake, brother.

It's getting closer.

It's getting closer.

And then eventually, the build up once they did,

it was off to the races.

- He nailed him, and right into The "Macho Man".

Hits him with a leg drop.

- The people want this.

We want to see Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage together.

We want this.

- It's an Avengers type thing.

Just very much like seeing,

you know, Iron Man and Cap work together.

- Here comes the Hulkster with a chair.

Protecting Randy Savage.

- They're awesome on their own,

but when you see them together teaming up,

you get the goosebumps, you know?

- Hulk loved Randy, you know.

They were so tight.

They had a great chemistry together.

Even though they were so different, but so much alike.

- Hulk Hogan, I compare him to Babe Ruth in baseball.

And I get chills up and down my spine when I say that.

Now I'd be lying if I didn't say

that I respect him 1,000,000%.

- A day without Randy was like a day without air, you know.

It was great to be around him.

His voice was always, "Hey, brother Hogan,

we're going to hit chest and back or

we just doing chest today, brother?"

Even when he was talking just normal,

he still had The "Macho Man" thing.

"You want to know about Elizabeth, you know."

[crowd cheers]

- Hello, everybody Welcome to Wrestlemania 4.

- 1988 WrestleMania 4,

every gamble that had been taken on Macho Man

prior to that paid off.

You could feel in that moment a real changing of the guard.

- You could feel the electricity in the air.

Nice move.

Oh, look at that.

Andre reached up and hooked the leg.

- André is going to cause a lot of trouble down there, Jess.

- Look bad for Randy,

and then to everyone's exhilaration.

- Dibiase is definitely taking advantage here.

[crowd cheers]

- Oh look at this.

The Hulkster.

- Oh.

- Oh, he clobbered the Million Dollar Man.

Savage hooks the leg.

It's over.

- That night elevated Randy to the great heights of

superstardom.

He was living his dream.

- Hogan was the one that built WrestleMania

for him to give the endorsement.

Then at that point to Randy Savage

was a real passing of the torch.

- It's jam packed here in the Richfield Coliseum for this

World Wrestling -- Event Survivor Series.

- In 1988, Survivor Series is when you first started to see

that there was cracks in the Mega Powers.

- Look at this.

Everybody got a shot.

- We got to see them come together.

But I think as soon as they became a team,

it also was in the back of your mind.

"Uh oh."

- We all knew from watching WWE that Randy Savage was supposed

to be possessive and jealous of Elizabeth.

So now she's also managing Hulk Hogan, and Randy Savage starts

to cast a wary eye on his partner,

because he knows how beautiful Elizabeth is.

The fans know how beautiful Elizabeth is.

Hogan must too.

Come on, Hulkster, we've got a date.

- Whoa ho ho ho.

- Seems a little peculiar to me.

- When they started shooting that angle with Liz,

you know, all of a sudden it came real to Randy.

- I just remember Randy being so intense about it.

I think it was the first time I felt any type of

little jealousy there.

It got a little weird.

That was the first time I felt any kind of weird stuff

that he might be a little bit uncomfortable

with me being friends with Elizabeth.

- Paris, France right now.

The Eiffel Tower,

one of the world's greatest masterpieces, yeah.

No, out of the way.

I'm a very jealous Macho Man

Isn't that right?

Yes I am.

- We're in Paris, France.

I was wrestling Randy, and when we went to the ring,

there were no steps.

I grabbed her under the armpits, picked her up over the top rope

like a Barbie doll, and sat her on the ring next to me.

All of a sudden, the referees got between me and Randy.

"You grabbed her boobs.

I saw you, you grabbed her breasts on purpose.

You're gonna pay for that."

Whoa, bro.

I said "I didn't do nothing on purpose."

"Bull [bleep] Hogan, you got lust for Elizabeth."

He's a real [bleep] through the whole match.

- This capacity crowd is coming alive, yes.

Here comes the Hulkster with his manager, the lovely Elizabeth.

Hulk Hogan knowing full well what the odds are here.

And yes, holding the rope for the lovely Elizabeth

to step through.

- Chivalry is not dead yet Macho Man.

- Oh yeah.

- You talk about that triangle forming

between Randy, Hulk and Elizabeth.

- They're going after Elizabeth.

Randy Savage chair in hand into the ring.

Swings at the Big Boss Man.

Elizabeth attending to Hulk Hogan,

who has been severely beaten.

Macho Man over to query Elizabeth,

about what's been going on, I think.

- I think Macho's a little more concerned over Elizabeth's

concern over Hogan.

- To use Elizabeth in this storyline was so easy, because

Randy did not like anyone to put hands on Liz except for himself.

And Randy was adamant,

he did not want Liz being touched in any way.

It's simple storytelling.

- He was not happy about a storyline wise,

so I would do everything I could to throw some extra

gas on the fire,

whether it be open the ropes or give her an extra hug

when we won,

or put her on my shoulder,

which got very ugly after a while

because he just did not dig that at all.

I understand, but you know, it's either you bring your wife in

and we go wide open or don't bring her in at all.

- You're going to have one of the great World Wrestling --

main events tonight,

the Mega Powers against the Twin Towers.

- That was such a weird night.

You could definitely feel something was going on

between Randy and Hulk.

- This is really getting off to a bang here.

- I kind of took it as

you know, they're really amped for this.

- Here comes Big Boss Man

[crowd cheers]

- Look at this.

- There's the tag, here comes The "Macho Man"

- The match was incredible.

Akeem and The Big Boss Man.

And then-

- Oh, no.

Oh my God, no.

Oh, no.

Oh my God, no.

- It's a pretty solid shot.

It wasn't for the faint of heart.

It's a pretty solid-

And that was like sacrilege to- to touch her.

- You know, there were so many different layers and so many

different ways that you could kind of perceive that story.

- If she's not there, it doesn't happen.

- It doesn't happen.

- Randy Savage hurled onto Elizabeth.

Hulk Hogan covering both of them.

- I remember the spot where Randy went through the ropes

and hit Liz.

He crossbodied her through the ropes so her head hit the floor.

I was shocked.

- This is a major problem.

Elizabeth is out.

- If he would have landed on top of her,

he probably would have done some serious damage.

Randy was-

an incredible tactician and knew what he was doing,

but she went down.

- Randy Savage

fuming mad at Hulk Hogan.

Who's attending to Elizabeth.

- Hulk takes her backstage.

- Hulk Hogan with Elizabeth

- Come on, somebody help us.

- And Randy, of course, sells that perfectly, like,

"What are you doing? We've got work here."

- Oh, God, please save her.

- Please, doc, she ok?

Do something for her, please.

- And look what this has done to The "Macho Man".

It's left The "Macho Man" in the ring,

all by himself.

- And so the match continues.

Hogan returns to the ring.

[crowd cheers]

- Here comes Hulk Hogan

- I can't believe Savage hasn't attempted a tag.

- Oh, over the top rope.

Now, Hulk Hogan reaching for the tag.

Oh, what a slap.

Savage struck Hogan.

What was that for?

- Anybody that had known Randy and Miss Elizabeth

behind the scenes,

they knew that Randy was very, very overprotective.

- I imagine there's real life jealousy.

And then there's the on screen jealousy you're presenting.

But Savage finally crosses the line at Main Event.

- Randy I think is leaving the area.

- Hulk finishes the match.

- To the ropes.

Drops the leg.

The cover one, two, three.

- And goes backstage.

- Randy. Macho Man.

- Over 20 million viewers, it finally happens.

- Right now.

You understand that?

- What the heck is wrong with you, man?

- What do you mean, what the heck is wrong with me?

- Why would you leave me out there?

- No, what is wrong with you?

- The Mega Powers exploded.

From that point on, there was no turning back.

Took his finger and he was poking me.

I thought he was going to poke me in the eye.

- Those eyes lust Elizabeth, you understand that?

- Randy.

- Get out of my face.

- You got lust for Elizabeth right there.

- He got real intense.

Listen to this guy, man.

Try and talk some sense into him.

And then.

[yelling]

When he turned his back on me and swung that belt,

he definitely made some serious contact with that belt.

You know, I know I couldn't have taken another one.

- Randy

[yelling]

- They send Gene back there

to do the interview,

and Hulk ain't talking.

I get that one.

- Back here in the first aid room.

I'm going to get a chance now, I think, to-to talk to Hulk Hogan

after everything that's happened.

[groaning]

- I remember Gene saying,

"What the hell they send me back there for?

He's not going to talk to me. What the hell?"

[groaning]

- Randy.

[yelling]

- Then you've got Hulk storming down the arena hallways,

throwing crates, knocking people out of the way.

People got hurt in that.

- Randy.

- But man, was that good television.

- At the time as a kid,

obviously I was heartbroken.

But as an adult, looking back at it,

was Savage a little bit right about Hogan?

He brings her back to get her help.

I mean, did Hogan have to stay in the locker room?

- This was really built on a lot of truth that Randy was jealous,

and he thought Hogan had eyes for Elizabeth.

- I think the realism helps the-the talent,

you know, because we're not Al Pacino.

We're not trained actors.

I think it's just easier for people to play that because they

actually can feel that way.

- Big ideas from Hulk Hogan.

He had to go in there and try to catch Elizabeth's eyes, yeah.

- Try it again.

And you could just take it from there.

- Randy Savage was not thrilled at the idea of this love

triangle storyline.

- But ultimately, Savage was a true professional and was going

to tell the story that needed to be told.

- Tape's rolling.

We've got speed.

Okay.

Stand by.

Here we go.

In three, two, one.

- Their friendship couldn't last because it was all built

on Hulk Hogan's lies, yeah.

- Excellent.

Excellent.

- Now we're rolling.

- Let me tell you something, Macho Man.

At WrestleMania 5, I'm gonna take my belt back from you.

- Let's go to Sean Mooney.

Sean go ahead.

- Macho Man Randy Savage will indeed face Hulk Hogan,

the World Wrestling -- Championship

at WrestleMania 5.

- His promos ahead of WrestleMania 5 were intense,

emotional.

- You've got lust in your black heart.

- Are you going to be in the corner

of Hulk Hogan or

The "Macho Man".

- I'll be in a neutral corner and from there I will continue

to support both men.

- Elizabeth, you want to be in a neutral corner?

It's fine, cause I don't need you either, yeah.

- He went so far as to put our manager, the lovely Elizabeth,

right between us, man.

- WrestleMania 5,

The Mega Powers explode in Atlantic City.

- If you look at the entire rivalry,

it's one where you can flat out say,

if Miss Elizabeth's not there, it doesn't happen.

- There's only one title.

There's only one person that could be there.

And something had to give.

- Hogan, you're mine.

I-I didn't sound like myself on that one.

- Wait a minute.

I'll tell you when.

Oh, jeez.

Okay, go.

- Before WrestleMania Randy Savage would end up suffering a

laceration in a match which would become seriously infected.

- We heard that he had a pretty serious medical issue

with that infection.

- He was really in bad shape.

He had busted his Bursa sac.

His elbow was really, really bad

to the point of doing the blood poisoning thing.

You could see it moving up his arm, the red and everything.

- Let me try that again.

That-That's embarrassing.

- He was in the hospital,

basically checked himself out against doctor's orders.

- And you've got

WrestleMania 5 coming up.

I will be the World Wrestling -- champion.

And what you gonna do, Macho Man?

- The day comes WrestleMania 5,

the Mega Powers explode.

It was my Super Bowl.

- Hogan and Savage and Elizabeth.

That story had the people.

- You want a nice button on things.

You know, you want a nice button on storylines like that-

that last years.

And this was a nice button.

- Get out of here.

I told you, no interview.

Come on, I'll knock you out.

Hulk Hogan I'm ready.

- He had a horrible injury on his elbow,

and he went out there in excruciating pain.

- If you knew Randy, you knew there was no chance

they could have taken a limb.

He would have found a way

to have gotten into that ring.

- He was just as intense as ever.

I mean, he would really turn the dial up when he worked with me.

So I was not getting a night off that was for sure.

- Oh, you're biting your nails.

This is not gonna end well.

Miss Elizabeth chose to go into a neutral corner,

and then she finds herself in the middle of the match.

- Oh, come on, give me a break.

- Having Miss Elizabeth involved helped contribute in a major way

to that being so exciting.

- He's gonna ram him into the steel posts.

What's this?

Look at Elizabeth.

Miss Elizabeth stepping right in front of him.

She's not staying in a neutral corner.

Look at that.

Miss Elizabeth

is causing all kinds of complications in this match.

Referee Hebner just put Miss Elizabeth out.

- Macho Man has just had Elizabeth

escorted away from the ring.

And finally.

We have mano y mano,

Hogan and Savage.

- Look at that.

What a battle this is.

- The Hulkamania legend definitely in trouble.

- Savage perched up there and the elbow.

- He got it.

- He nailed him.

- He got it.

- The Hulkster's outta there.

- Listen to this place.

This place is going crazy.

- I can't believe this is happening.

There's the big boot.

And the leg drop.

One, two-

He got him.

[crowd cheers]

- And the new World

Wrestling -- Heavyweight Champion.

- You know, the timing and everything felt magical.

It felt like we were on point, but I didn't realize how

special it really was.

Randy being intense and being way over the top and everything

was overkill and over check and over recheck.

"Well, did we truly close the garage door.

We just went by twice.

Maybe it's still open," you know.

Randy, we closed the garage door when we left.

That intense part of Randy was part of me also.

I just didn't externally expose it like Randy did.

- You get into my frazzled brain for 24 hours and

you need a vacation.

Me, I'm locked in.

[laughing]

I have to do this.

All right?

This is me.

[crowd cheers]

- Savage's not sure.

- It was one thing for Randy to pick Elizabeth to be his manager

right after entering WWE.

But now Elizabeth had become a star too.

And with stardom comes pressure.

And now they were feeling that pressure together.

And there was no place to really escape that pressure.

Naturally, their relationship was impacted.

- They are together every day.

That can be tough on a couple, especially if you're doing 300

shows a year and you're seeing each other every day.

Let's face it, every day is not peaches and cream.

- We're in Florida.

We were on his boat and they put me off of my dock

and they drove off.

And that's when my wife at the time, Linda,

invited Miss Elizabeth to come down to Miami.

And about a week after that is when everything exploded.

Liz confided in her that I'm leaving Randy.

You know, I just can't handle what was going on.

We had a suite at the Jockey Club.

It's a hotel in North Miami Beach.

Randy was actually going on the road for a while.

I go down to the pool and Liz is down there with this tennis pro.

And they're acting more than friendly.

But, I didn't know that she left Randy like a note

and said she was leaving him.

All the sudden about three days later,

you know, I don't talk to Randy.

I don't talk to anybody.

I'm getting out of that shower about

5 or 6 o'clock.

And as I'm getting out of the shower, I hear,

"Where's she at? Tell me where she's at."

I said, "Hold on, brother, slow your roll.

Back up a little bit."

So, I took Randy down to the front desk.

Me and the manager and Randy all went around to where

Elizabeth's apartment was.

Randy took the key from him, opened the door, and as he

pushed the door, he goes,

"Hey, Liz. What's up?"

And I hauled ass.

I was gone.

I mean, as soon as he got in that room, I took off.

About 20 minutes later, I go out front.

There must have been 20 cop cars out there.

So I'm not exactly sure what happened in the room,

or if the tennis pro was there or what was going on, but

that was the beginning of the end.

"It's your fault, you destroyed my marriage.

You're the one that did it."

He hated my guts.

He blamed me for everything.

So after Randy and Liz's divorce

Hulk and Savage's friendship started to deteriorate.

Within a few years, both men would leave the WWE,

but you knew that it was only a matter of time before

both men ended up in the ring again.

- WCW was looking to compete

with WWE,

and they were throwing a lot of money at Hulk Hogan.

- And WCW Eric Bischoff

came to me.

We got a chance to bring Randy Savage in and Eric knew

how our relationship was.

I said, "Well, brother, if there's money to be made,

bring him in."

And then Eric came to me and said,

"Hey, we can bring Liz in."

I said, "Well, this is a personal thing with Randy."

But Randy gave Eric the green light, "Bring her in, man."

- Elizabeth ends up coming to WCW.

At this point they've been divorced,

but Randy Savage has to find a way to make something work.

- It was a very awkward situation,

and I think it hurt him a lot.

- They mended the fences, but only on a working situation.

While they were at the ring, everything was happy.

- WWE eventually would buy out WCW,

and Hulk Hogan had one of the greatest second chapters

in wrestling history.

Randy Savage's career had pretty much wound down.

- Unlock the thing.

Take the chain off.

- But he still had an incredible pop culture presence.

- Hey, freak show, you're going nowhere.

- Then out of nowhere, he put out a rap album,

and he's calling out Hulk Hogan.

- All your Hulkamaniacs

are knocking on your door.

They're saying, "Be a man, Hogan, be a man."

What's up with that?

- Randy's personal attacks on Hogan were pretty much the

lowest point of the relationship.

- You know, he became a prima donna.

He believed his own publicity.

He became a legend in his own mind.

- At the same time, they both suffered a profound loss,

someone that was very close to both men.

- She's known to millions of wrestling fans as

Miss Elizabeth.

She's been found dead in her Georgia home.

- Liz was so young and so vibrant and so full of life.

And I know on his side of the fence

he loves her till the day she died.

- Elizabeth's story is- is really tragic.

I remember, you know, meeting them, you could see

that connection between those two.

- First of all, I want to ask you about, you know,

Miss Elizabeth, you know, her loss and everything.

- Yeah, we were actually married, and we got a divorce,

like, which happens in life sometimes.

And we had separation.

We had closure.

But I really feel real bad for her and her family.

- I don't doubt for a moment.

He always loved her.

- For eight years he hated my guts.

You know, 10 or 12 years before that, we were best friends.

We did everything together.

After a while I was at a heart doctor because I was having some

issues with my heart.

- Hulk was on the table, and all of a sudden he sees somebody

standing over him and he goes, "Hulkster."

- And he walked in the room and I said,

"Man, Macho you look great."

And so we talked for a few minutes.

He had this wedding ring on and he said he remarried

his high school sweetheart.

And, things were going great.

It kind of like made my life to see how happy he was.

And he forgave me for whatever I did.

We talked over the phone several times,

and we were planning a barbecue.

- If you follow pro wrestling, you know,

Randy "Macho Man" Savage.

- One of pro wrestling's best known former stars.

- Randy Savage died after suffering a heart attack

while driving.

- Randy "Macho Man" Savage was 58.

- Feels like he's still here.

I was looking at some pictures of him yesterday.

Seems like he's still should be here.

He had everything.

He had the look.

He had the gimmick, the physicality.

He understood the art form of storytelling.

He was the perfect wrestler.

- Savage again from the top rope.

- Macho has got everything going his way.

- With Randy,

just his presence made it feel more of a spectacle.

- But Hogan had depth as well.

He goes against this colorful guy that is this super intense

human being with this beautiful wife, and now he's kind of

caught in a love triangle.

That's that's a pretty divergent path.

- Wait a minute.

- Think about the 80's.

It's always those two.

You always think, Hogan, Macho.

- We could be seeing the meeting of the Madness and the Mania.

Yes, there it is.

- People say, "Oh well, it was meant to be.

God put us together for a reason.

We met for a reason."

Him and I were in the ring for a reason because it just worked.

Randy and I went through a lot.

It was really nice to bury the hatchet,

get back on the same page with him.
