the legendary stories behind

the greatest rivalries

about "The Heartbreak Kid"

Shawn Michaels, and
"The Dead Man" The Undertaker,

and the rivalry
that these two men had.

- Undertaker, the man who
stayed, the consistent,

the last true locker room leader

He's in there
with a guy who really,

there was
no one who could keep up.

It was more
about playing with him

versus trying
to play against him.

- A lot of these rivalries were
so great because those people,

they needed
the other one

where these two entities
absolutely stand alone.

- Weighing in at 320 pounds,
from Death Valley,

I give you the Undertaker.

[laughs]

[The Undertaker's music plays]

- The Undertaker is now
revealed.

- I never heard of him.

- Take a look.

- Holy cow.

Look at the side
of that ham hock.

- In the early '90s
I'm still trying to figure out

what exactly the Undertaker is.

- Nasty, nasty look.

- I've been given this
character,

but I still have
to develop the character.

- Look at his eyes.

Look at his eyes.

The man is possessed.

- I'm throwing a lot of stuff
up against the wall

and trying to figure out
what's going to stick.

- Rest in peace.

- It should have been cartoonish
because you have this idea

like he's a dead man
who's out there wrestling,

but he did it so well

and it was so convincing that,
oh my gosh,

this is cool creepy.

- It's thundering,
its lightning.

Yes, it's the Undertaker.

- When he first came in,
it's a like cool character,

but how long is
that going to last?

It doesn't seem like
it's got a long shelf life.

How long can you not sell
and you're dead?

- Look out.

What agility by the big guy.

- I ended up dropping the
undertaker guard a little bit,

but still try to hang on
the elements of the character,

making me a more
well-rounded sports entertainer.

- The one and the only,
the phenom, it's the Undertaker.

- Man, the Undertaker
had an aura,

and Mark had an aura.

That Undertaker
persona was legit.

- It just seemed watching
a natural transition to go from,

"Oh, I'm scared of this guy" to,
"Oh, yes, Undertaker

This is going to be great."

Naturally, you just started
to love him.

- The most phenomenal
athlete to ever step

into the squared circle
is finally champion.

- There's certain
things WWE is built on.

I think the Undertaker was a
cornerstone for all those years.

He was the guy, good and bad,
that had to carry the ball.

- What I always got the sense
watching was that Undertaker

was trying to outperform the
greatest performer

of the new generation.
Shawn Michaels.

- I will give you a show like
you have never,

ever see before.

Why?

Because I can.

- You're looking at the wrestler
of the '90s, Shawn Michaels.

- Shawn who's not
the biggest guy in the world,

but man, what a performer
when the bell rings.

- What I do is go out there,
thrill people beyond belief.

- There's only one
"Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels

- Pretty boy, ahead of his time
with the things

that he could do in the ring,
and he was so talented, man.

Shawn could have
worked with a broomstick

and made it entertaining
for 30 minutes.

- He's resilient.

He's flamboyant.

Look at all of these people
are standing up.

Haven't seen a reaction
to anybody like this since

The Beatles - I'm always ready
to rock the house.

That is what I do
for a living, Vin Man.

- Shawn was starting
to really grow as the beacon

of the company, the top guy.

- The fact that
I'm the showstopper,

the headliner, the main event.

- Make no mistake about it, back
then, Shawn Michaels was a --.

- I don't give a damn
what anybody thinks of me.

- As a human being back then-

- Shut up.

- -we were just way
too different kind of people.

I just didn't care
for him personally.

- If you can't trust Shawn
Michaels, who can you trust?

- Mark and I didn't know
each other very well,

but we just figured
what we knew we didn't like.

[laughs]

We just sort of agreed
we didn't like each other

and that was it.

We didn't like each other's
personalities, and clearly,

mine was easy to dislike.

- I'm not the most popular
guy in the World Wrestling --,

but then again,
I'm not looking to win

any popularity contests

- I think that Shawn's talent

and being able to perform
and outperform

everyone else on the card,

I do think that it was Shawn's
talent outweighed his attitude.

- I currently, right now, am not
scheduled to be at SummerSlam.

That's not my decision.

Shawn is the

- Shawn Michaels asserting
himself from the get-go.

Look at this.

- Oftentimes, those special
referees will play

a definite role in the end
of the match.

- Shawn Michaels
with that chair

that Bret tried
to throw out of the ring.

- Good God.

- I get blazed with the chair,
end up losing,

and that sets it all off.

- This is horrible.

- The Undertaker is
going after Shawn Michaels.

If it hadn't have been for you,
the Undertaker might still be

the World Wrestling --
Champion.

- Shawn Michaels
doesn't apologize

to anybody or anything.

- Back then I wouldn't have
pissed on Shawn

if he was on fire,
but there's no one

that I'd rather be in the ring
with working against.

- The Undertaker
against Shawn Michaels.

First-ever matchup
here in Louisville

- I'd say this might be a bad
time to be Shawn Michaels.

- I could lock up with him and
just as we would go

through things,
you could feel the comfort.

- Michaels, no, no, no.

- Oh, my Gosh.

- There's no way
to describe it to somebody,

just that you feel it
and you know right away like,

"Okay, this is going to be
a cake walk."

- The referee.

- Another referee.

- Tim White coming down
and calling this, I believe.

- Trying to get control
of this match.

Nothing is going
to stop the Undertaker.

- They got the Undertaker
in the ring.

They got Shawn Michaels out.

Oh, my God.

He took out about 10 superstars
including Shawn Michaels.

- They got The Undertaker
in the ring.

- They got Shawn Michaels out.

Oh, my God.

[crowd cheers]

- Did you see that?

- You don't expect somebody
my height and size

to go flying like that.

It just really caught
people like,

"Did I just see him do that?"

- Both these guys were
so top shelf that for them

to get together
is literally just a bonus.

It's just a treat
for everyone else.

- Shawn had used every tool

at his disposal to evade the
inevitability of his demise

at the hands of the Undertaker.

He'd get away.

That's how Hell in a Cell
comes into effect here.

Two men enter, one man leaves.

- The largest cage
in the history of the

World Wrestling --.

There's one way
in and one way out.

[The Undertaker's music plays]

- For me, that's like my
version of Christmas.

It's like, "Oh, this is going
to be so much fun."

- Shawn understood that
he was undersized, overmatched,

and what needed to happen.

- This is not a good time
to be Shawn Michaels.

- Man, I beat him like
he owed me money.

- Michaels now-- Oh, my.

This is not going to be pretty.

Mowed down to the canvas,
and Michaels just literally

bounces off the canvas.

- This is truly Hell in a Cell
for Shawn Michaels.

- If nothing else,
what I do really well

is get my backside handed to me.

- Michaels coming right back.

Oh, no.

Oh, God.

He just wiped out the cameraman.

- The EMT crew out to help this
unfortunate cameraman.

- When his opportunities arose,
he took full advantage of them.

- Wait a minute.

Michaels is out.

Michaels is out of the cage.

Michaels and Undertaker
are out of the cage.

- You have to appreciate the
fact he may go down,

but he's going
to go down swinging.

- No.

- Oh.

- What's he doing?

Trying to get away
from the Undertaker.

Michaels is going up.

Michaels is going up
on top of the cage.

- He's on top of the cell.

- God.

The Undertaker's
going right after him.

- What?

- Oh, my God.

What is this?

- The two were so great at what
they did that any animosity

that may have existed for
whatever reasons

disappeared when
they were performing

out in front of an audience.

- Shawn's bleeding so badly
that it's just coming down and

hitting the lens of the camera
which was such a cool shot.

You felt this is it.

This is it for Shawn Michaels.

- Incoming.

Incoming.

- Oh, no.

- My God.
He may be broken in half.

- We have built this thing up
to Hell in a Cell

and the match is going on
and it's exactly what

everyone's expecting.

- He's trying to completely
destroy Shawn Michaels.

- Chokeslam.

Chokeslam.

A chokeslam off the top

- He's getting his ass
handed to him.

- Heading back from hell.

- It's all over.
It's all over.

- Low and behold,
little brother.

[Kane's music plays]

- That's got to be Kane.

- Undertaker and Shawn Michaels
are having a classic match.

In fact, at one point my thought
was, "Man, I just hope I don't

mess this match up
because it's so good."

- The Undertaker is
driven down to the canvas.

- This is shocking.

No, no.

[bell rings]

[Shawn Michaels' music plays]

- Here is your winner,

"The Heartbreak Kid"
Shawn Michaels.

- For my money,
that's still the best cell match

there's ever been.

- Shawn Michaels
has defeated the Undertaker.

- No, no, no.

Wait a minute.

Kane has defeated
the Undertaker.

- After that initial cell match,

Shawn Michaels and
the Undertaker

would square off again
at the Royal Rumble in 1998.

- The following contest
is a casket match.

- One man must place his
opponent in the casket

and shut the lid.

- It had some really cool
spots around the caskets.

- For me as a bad guy,
I can't just beat the guy

bigger than me
in these matches without help.

It does nothing for me
and my character

if I'm outright
really beating a guy.

- There he is.

There he is.

- The Undertaker refused to
fight his brother, Kane,

but because of that,
Kane started interfering

in all of the
Undertaker's matches.

- A Chokeslam into the casket.

Taker in the casket.

Michaels shut the lid.

- Shawn Michaels
was the beneficiary

of that interference.

- During the course of the
match, unfortunately,

I did something where I threw
him over the top

and I think he
was trying to clear

it was the big casket
and he was trying

to clear it too
and he hit his back.

I didn't know how bad it was and
probably was somewhat skeptical

because of Shawn and
how he acted outside of the ring

Maybe he's hurt
maybe he's not.

- Basically, crushed several
discs in my back

and I had to get
my lower back fused.

- The edge of that casket right
on the lower back

of Shawn Michaels.

- At the time, the majority of
people that got that

done were older people that
began to live a very limited

quality of life after that.

- Shawn Michaels is
hurt and hurt badly.

- When he took that backdrop
into the casket and blew

his back out, he was done.

He had a lot in the tank and he
knew he had a lot in the tank.

It was very, very
difficult for him.

- How's the back feeling?

- Hurts.

- Are we going to see you
in the ring anytime soon?

- Not anytime soon.

- While Shawn Michaels was
injured for several years,

the Undertaker continued to
build up his aura through

his WrestleMania
undefeated streak.

- He has never lost at
WrestleMania has the Undertaker.

- Whenever we needed somebody

when guys were hurt
and business was good,

business was bad,
we'd called on Taker,

and Taker always came in
with consistent greatness.

- The Undertaker came out
with the Last Ride.

The Undertaker has done it.

[bell rings]

- I personally didn't even
realize there was a streak

until my 10th WrestleMania,
so I was 10-0.

It was in Toronto against Flair.

- Now the tombstone.

No.

Oh.

- That's the first time that I
acknowledged it in any way.

- He's 10-0.

10-0.

- While the Undertaker's
undefeated streak was becoming

the stuff of legend,

an old nemesis arrived
back on the scene.

- He is a show stopper,
what an amazing, amazing athlete

He has had several
life-changing experiences

since his last match.

- I knew that he had
got his life together.

He'd found Christ and he had
made all these changes.

I remember welcoming him back
and then he was like,

"Hey, I'm sorry I was a --."

It was cool because what I think
of him in the ring,

now I feel for him
on a personal level,

which this one is far
more important.

- Mark and I were two
foundational pillars

of a really important time
in the WWE

carrying this company through
a tougher time and a leaner time

I don't know.

I think he and
I took some type of pride in.

All these years later to
possibly having the opportunity

to revisit some
of that was I think realized

when we were in that ring
together at the Rumble.

[ringer buzzes]

- Now it is time for
The Royal Rumble match.

- Once you go over the top rope
and both feet hit the floor

you are eliminated.

[The Undertaker's music plays]

- Uh-oh.

- Here we go.

- The legendary phenom.

He's going from the chokeslam.

- Oh, spear.

- Edge spearing Undertaker.

- They eliminated everyone until
it was only two men left.

- Wait a minute.

Shawn Michaels back in the ring.

- Wait, wait.

- Randy Orton eliminated.

Edge eliminated.

Sweet chin music-

- Look out.

- -eliminated Edge.

We are down to two men.

- Then you've got
an entire match just about.

- The lights are on bright.

- Whoa.

- You've got two legends
that know how to finish people.

- Undertaker sit up.

Shawn Michaels kip up.

These two legends
are face to face.

One of these men is going
to headline WrestleMania?

- How long's it been since
we've seen this?

- We all wanted more
of Shawn Michaels

and here was this magical moment
where that could happen.

In that situation,
you had the greatest opponent

he could ever ask for.

- Oh.

- With one arm and now the
rights and lefts from perhaps

the best pure striker
in the history of--

- What a right hand.

Look out.

- What a shot.

- Shawn Michaels
close to being eliminated.

- There were so many levels to
it that made it fun and made it

that much more special.

- Everybody in this arena
standing up and feeling it.

Here we go.

- Shawn Michaels eliminated
Edge like that.

Went for sweet chin music,
got caught.

- Whoa, whoa, whoa.

- Undertaker has eliminated
Shawn Michaels.

Undertaker is going
to WrestleMania.

[The Undertaker's music plays]

- Then it becomes so obvious
that I have to see,

I have to see that match.

- If there's anybody that ought
to face the Undertaker

at the 25th Anniversary of
WrestleMania,

you're looking at him.

- You never got anything
conclusive with anything

that had ever happened

to Undertaker and
Shawn Michaels together.

The first match at Ground Zero
there wasn't a definitive winner

At Hell in a Cell,
it was Kane that came out

to caused Shawn to win,
but the Undertaker

really whooped his ass.

[bell rings]

- The Undertaker was never able
to pin Shawn Michaels,

so the thought of
a one-on-one match

between these two
was very intriguing.

- I know I was feeling it.

Gosh.

Shawn Michaels could break
the Undertaker's streak.

- What do you think,

versus the streak?

Yes, hell yes.

- Shawn Michaels, I accept your
challenge for WrestleMania.

- You may be 16-0
at WrestleMania,

but I am Mr WrestleMania.

- I have never been outperformed

on the grandest stage
of them all and I never will.

- You want to know how
good Shawn Michaels is?

He's 6-11 at WrestleMania.

He lost to Razor,
he lost to Diesel,

he faced Undertaker

When you're that good

He just knew

to be able to have one of the
greatest matches of his career.

- I just ask him, I was like,
"Where are we at on the card?"

- I was trying to keep
that on the down low

for a while and I said
you guys are on fifth.

Silence, and how many matches
are on the card?

- I look at Shawn and Shawn
looks at me and we knew exactly

what each other was thinking
like, "Mm, no, no."

- We understood if you didn't
want to make it the main event,

but it certainly needs to be
near there and it wasn't.

We were like,
"Okay, well, now they're --."

Because we are fixing to go
out there and tear some -- down.

Ain't nobody got control over
the two of us and we're going to

[laughs]

We're going to burn this -- down
you should just end the show.

[laughs]

Nothing's going to be
able to follow it?

[fireworks]

- It is game day for
Mr. WrestleMania

and Mr. WrestleMania
has his game face on.

- Can Michaels hang
the first loss

ever on the Undertaker has been
the question on everyone's mind.

- I knew how great Shawn was and
I knew how great Undertaker was.

I didn't know if
they were going to go out

and do something like they
could've done in '95 and '96.

- Look at the eyes
of the Undertaker.

Look at the eyes
of Shawn Michaels.

One is defiant.

One set of eyes destructive.

into the cameraman.

- I was at a monitor.

A bunch of us women
were at all watching.

There was that really
scary moment,

that really awkward fall.

I know we talk
a lot about injuries,

but everybody
just kind of gasped.

- Shawn was going to push the
cameraman into me

and I was going to take
the cameraman out, right?

But the cameraman wasn't there
and I'm flying through the air

like a lawn dart
and the only thing I see

is the steel grate
that I land in.

Yes, I got my bell rung
a little bit.

For a second there I didn't know
where I was at.

- As I see him turning,
I can see that look

of disgust/anger,
but in that I know he's okay

because he's okay
enough to be pissed.

- I can hear the referee.

I can hear his count and I'm
like, "Oh, crap.

I've got to get in the ring."

[laughs]

- Eight.

- Is Shawn Michaels going to win
this match on a count-out?

- A count of nine.

- Undertaker made it back.

- He's back in the ring.

- The streak's alive.

- The streak's alive
by less than a second.

- Once I rolled into the ring,
man, we were right back into it.

We never missed a beat.

- Undertaker.

- No.

- Chokeslam with authority.

- Whoa.

- Good God Almighty.

What a chokeslam.

- Taker is such a big man,
but it also speaks

to his resilience.

Who can take a fall like that
and not only get up

but continue
in arguably the greatest

wrestling match of all time?

- He got it.

- No.

- Michaels got him.

- That's it.

- A sudden sweet chin music.

- That's it.

- The streak may be over.

- All he's got to do is crawl
and get one arm across--

there it is.

- Is the streak over here?

Undertaker kicked out.

- Shawn Michaels, his timing
is better than perfect

he is confident in the things
that he can do well,

and he studies who he's working
with, and showcases

the things that they do well.

You can perform
with him forever.

bounced off the canvas.

His body's wrecked.

- Impossible.

- From a fan's point of view,
there's no drop-off

at all in what Shawn Michaels
is capable of doing, none.

Every beating he takes
looks as good as it did.

Every offensive comeback
he takes is as fast as it was.

Undertaker has skinned Michaels.

better story than we could ever

- I was working with Randy
at that WrestleMania

and I remember watching.

I probably watched a good half
or more of that match

as I was getting ready and
thinking, "We are --."

It was the greatest thing
I'd ever seen.

- Look out, Undertaker
ran into some--

- My God, Michaels is
going to try another chance.

- Undertaker.

- Here it comes, Incoming.

- Catching Michaels in mid-air.

- Michaels caught.
Michaels caught.

Michaels caught.
Tombstone.

- Tombstone.

Piledriver.

- He did it.

- 17 and 0.

17 and zero.

- Ladies and gentlemen,
Shawn Michaels proved tonight

that he was indeed
Mr. WrestleMania,

but the Undertaker
proved that

he is WrestleMania's phenom.

- I just remember sitting there
watching the monitor

and watching it
and just as soon as it's done,

I go, "I'm glad I retired
because I've just watched

the greatest wrestling match
in the history of the world."

- What an absolutely
unbelievable match.

- As a wrestling fan,

how could you ask
for anything more?

- I came out of 25
feeling such peace.

I remembered looking
at my wife and saying,

"I wonder if I should have ended
on that one."

It was just such
a great feeling afterwards.

The match, the way it felt,
the guy that it was with.

We had already discussed
my retirement

and that match sort of
helped me confirm it,

and then it was
just a matter of getting there.

- But at this point,
we're really close.

Now we have this special place
in history too.

At this late stage in both
of our careers,

we have this phenomenal match.

- Shawn had made up
his mind to retire,

but there was definitely
a clamoring for another

Undertaker-Shawn Michaels
match,

and I think Shawn clearly
felt that as well.

- You know something?

Undertaker,

I can beat you.

- After the first WrestleMania
match, I looked at both of them

and I said, "You know
there's a return match here."

- You and me, WrestleMania,
one more time.

To me it was just a matter of
making that decision,

getting to the next one,
and having once again

that feeling of peace and
contentment and walking away.

- You're on.

I accept

on one condition,

If you defeat me,
you end the streak.

If I beat you,
your career is over.

- Arguably the greatest
WrestleMania career

of all time against the
greatest streak of all time.

- If I can't beat you at
WrestleMania, I have no career.

- Streak versus career.

That upped
the ante considerably.

- You're on.

- A little bit of pressure
builds up at that point

when you were going to have
someone of that caliber,

that big a superstar and you're
responsible for his last match.

- This has been my life
for over 25 years.

Do you think
that I'd risk everything

if I didn't know
I could beat you?

- Shawn told me that
one night at 3:00 in the morning

everything came to him,
and he just had this idea,

and he woke up in bed,
ran into the kitchen

and he just thought how the
match should go

and he wrote it all down.

- I needed to do something
with substance to it.

For your last one,
that's what you want to--

I want to--

I don't know.

I want it to be
a beautiful painting that I go,

"Here it is, and see you later."

In this line of work,
you need another gifted

painter with you.

- I will open up the gates of
hell and I will unleash a fury

that no mortal man has ever seen

your career is over.

the granduer of entertainment's

- I wanted him to go out
the way he deserved

to go out with a match
that he deserved to go out with.

It was extremely
nerve-wracking for me.

- Making his way to the ring,
from San Antonio, Texas,

he is "The Heartbreak Kid"
Shawn Michaels.

- Everybody's going
to compare it to the last one.

Clearly, from a stipulation
standpoint, it's raised,

but how do we connect
on an emotional level?

- As the sun sets
in the Arizona desert,

is it setting on the career
of Shawn Michaels?

- It does not appear
that Shawn Michaels

is intimidated at all.

- Same thing that made him,
that built him,

that sustained him
has got to be the same thing

at the end that
causes his demise.

I was going to go down my way

they differentiated it

for the audience was the motive
