the late Middle Ages, whose martial

arts skills and innovative weaponry
launched China's greatest empire, the

Dynasty, versus the French musketeers,
17th century special forces,

and battle -hardened killers.

who pioneered that gut -busting firearm
that inspired their name.

Lead biomedical scientist Jeff Damelin
will supervise the weapons testing. I

love this matchup. We've got black
powder weapons, we've got blades. I've

bring all my tools to the table.

ER physician Armand Dorian will examine
the gruesome injuries to evaluate their

deadliness. The Musketeers are
legendary, and the Ming Warriors, they

an unbelievable empire. And I'm going to
be very interested in seeing how they

match up against the Musketeers.

Computer whiz Max Geiger will track all
the test results and input the data into

a simulation program, generating a five
-on -five squad battle.

Now, these warriors are interesting
because they fit in that area in history

when gunpowder was beginning to rise
prominently.

The simulator will generate a blow -by
-blow battle to the death.

The winner will be the deadliest
warrior.

The musketeers' weapons will be
brandished by French native Xavier

Xavier served in the French Foreign
Legion and is a specialist in sword

fighting. So everybody was afraid of the
musketeers. They were the elite

bodyguard of the King of France.

Also fighting for the Musketeers, Luke
LaFontaine.

Luke is a French combat historian and
master swordsman. Musketeers fought 24

hours a day. You developed your
reputation on how many men you killed.

Musketeers were formed in 1622, when the
American colonies were just being

established.

A select company of only 200 men.

They were armed with the best weapons of
their day by King Louis XIII and led

French armies against persistent
invaders.

Europe was full of very strong armies.
They wanted to conquer France. So

continuously we have to fight.

to make them leave. We fought the
British, we fought the Spanish, we

Belgian, the Swiss, we're the top
fighters in Europe.

The musketeers were the special forces
of the 17th century. The specialized

units were key in developing the borders
of modern -day France.

The most powerful armies in Europe
couldn't stop the musketeers, so aha,

Ming warriors are going to do that.

Our musketeer team is confident, but
they're facing equally certain

A specialist on Chinese classical

million. Once the Ming conquered

a country, they would kill all the

My predestined prediction goes to the
Musketeer. I think they bring all the

aspects of the game. They come from
nobility, have a lot of finance, they

For a Ming warrior, we see some of the
earliest innovations in using gunpowder,

and I think that sort of innovation will
favor the Ming warrior.

The Ming kick off the showdown with a
groundbreaking weapon that combined the

Chinese invention of gunpowder with long
-range killing power.

The Nest of Bees rocket battery.

32 flying arrows of death in a single
shot.

This here is the Nest of Bees.

Oh, nice.

It's kind of like a bottle rocket,
except a lot, lot larger, a lot

It's pretty much the first rocket used.

Ever in warfare, how did Ming weapons
engineers become rocket fighters?

Ming Dynasty warriors spent centuries of
time to develop and perfect this weapon

of mass destruction.

The Ming wrapped gunpowder in paper,
which was then bound to an arrow.

A fuse made it deadly.

The rocket engine will explode, and this
baby is going to fly 100 to 500 yards

far.

Determine how fast these rockets will
fly.

A single arrow will be fired at a target
200 feet downrange.

What I'm trying to do here is capture

There's absolutely no question. You have
a nest of bees flying at you, three,

two of these, rocket -propelled arrows
coming at you. It's going to be

absolutely terrifying.

These guys are unscathed, though, huh?
Yeah, yeah. It's like he's untouched.

And the primary target, too, seems to be
unscathed. I mean, this is pretty

impressive. It's hitting exactly,
randomly, but exactly where you want to

kill. Right in the left chest, right
where that heart is.

Take a look how deep this is.

That. Pretty deep. That's just about
right where that rocket was.

That is enough to hit the heart and
kill. Let's look back here. Look at

Dead center chest.

Again, I mean, it's like either a
complete miss or a kill.

So the random aspect of this is very
apparent.

Out of the 32 arrows, six hit targets.

Three of them kill shots.

So what do we got here? We got 17 guys.

Six hits. I think the thing here is that
unpredictable isn't a synonym for

dangerous. It's a synonym for
unreliable. Next time Louis XIII needs a

celebration and wants fireworks, we'll
call these guys. That's a good weapon

that. You think that's a joke? Hit six
men.

Couple them in the face. You're talking
about musketeers. That's not going to

impress us. Yeah, it doesn't impress you
until you get one stuck in your face.

Who will be that deadliest warrior?

Back in the fight club.

It's East versus West.

The ingenious Chinese warriors from the
Ming army against France's highly

trained and deadly fighting force.

French musketeers lived on the edge. The
more people you killed, you shot up in

the ranks.

The musketeers were the elite French
military of their time. So don't let

clothes fool you. There's a lot of lace,
a lot of velvet, and feathers in your

hats. You think rock stars get a lot of
women? You have no idea the musketeers'

reputation for pulling in the ladies and
being badasses.

Everyone walking down the street was
carrying four feet of steel.

They were itching to use that steel to
prove themselves as a man.

Over a 180 -year period, 40 ,000 French
nobles were lost in private duels.

A lot of that was caused by musketeers
killing other guys.

But our Ming experts believe their
warriors are deadlier.

The Ming warriors were physically
stronger.

They had better weapons.

And they had the military training
needed to take out any enemy they faced.

The Ming soldiers were very innovative
and very creative. They have hundreds of

weapons. And also they have poisonous
gas heated inside of grenades.

No one's seen that before.

The enemies did not expect that. The
Ming mentality was kind of like

warfare. The enemy would get taken down
slowly.

The Ming warriors launch into battle
with the Nest of Bees rocket battery,

mechanical landmine, the three -barrel
pole gun, and the Dao sword.

The musketeers retaliate with their own
killer cash.

The blintlock musket, the grenade, the
wheelock pistol, and the rapier sword

and main ghost dagger.

The Ming's long -range weapon, the Nest
of Bees, was deadly.

but not completely accurate.

The musketeers feel they have a weapon
that is far deadlier.

The early flintlock mechanism musket was
the highest development of the musket

at that time. The musket.

A bone -shattering blaster that punches
huge caliber holes into its victims.

What you have here is an early 17th
century musket, but the flintlock

is what makes it state of the art.

You could get about three shots in a
minute with this musket. It's a 75

bore musket. 75 -caliber? Yeah. That's
the largest we've seen on this show yet.

Champ will use a chronometer to measure
the speed of the musket's bullet.

That's about a quarter speed of modern

At 426 miles per hour, the musket is
almost twice as fast as the Nest of Bees

To test the lethality and accuracy of
the musket, a ballistics gel torso is

up at 50 feet.

Luke will have one minute to inflict as
much damage as possible.

I want to see two rounds in the chest,
one to the head.

Ready! Eyes and ears, boys.

Oh!

Nice. A damaged shot, but it takes Luke
15 to 20 seconds to reload his muscles.

Okay, so let's take a look at actual
trauma here. First shot, almost dead

in the chest, and this is a kill shot in
and of itself because of location.

You're hitting the superior vena cava,
the biggest vessel that comes down,

basically rupturing that, and if you
look at the back, coming out the

and you have a beautifully lit track
here of the blood as the bullet comes

Okay, let's take a look at the placement
of the second one. This thing is going

to bleed inside that chest cavity, and
it's going to be a kill, but it's going

to be a delayed kill. We're talking
minutes to perhaps hours.

With the third and final shot, you hit
the cheekbone, the zygoma here. You

fracture that.

It's not an instant kill, but having
said that, there's a very good chance

inside that brain there's going to be a
hemorrhage, a bleed, and he's going to

die from that.

Look, it took one minute to get three
shots off. One of them is actually...

A definite kill. The other two, a maybe
kill. And it's a single standing target.

You see the accuracy of this weapon. You
see the damage that it does.

Our net to beat is 32 shots.

Even just a small percentage of those
that hits you, you're gone.

Boom. Bottom line, after your little
musketeer starts reloading for his

shot, he's going to have a Ming warrior
right in his face ready to kill him.

Our specialty is close quarters combat.

So the closer you are, bring it on.

The bayonet was first used by the
musketeers for close quarters combat and

accounted for a third of all casualties
on the battlefield.

musket was accurate, but its accuracy

You know, in an army -on -army fight, if
you had an entire battalion of guys

carrying these and using them against
your enemy, that could do something, but

You know, I tend to agree, Max. Even
though it was limited and compared to

nest of bees, the musket does have quite
a long range.

And it does the damage when it hits. I'm
giving my edge to the musket.

For long -range weapons, the edge goes
to the French musketeers for the musket.

The Ming excelled in two schools of Kung

The Ming knew how to be combative with
hands. They knew how to kick. They knew

how to take down. Basically, it's
military training, so it's very

hard on the body, so they were very
tough.

The Ming are going to have an obvious
advantage in combative attack and

technique. The musketeers have their own
X -Factor, a royal bloodline.

The musketeers at Maison du Roy were
royalty.

In order to get in, you had to have some
form of noble line in your family.

You're talking about someone who's
already had years of personal

lessons and swordsmanship lessons
because that was what the nobility did.

Ming believed they have a black powder
invention that could blow away a small

army of nobility.

The Mechanical Landmine, an underground
network of bombs.

Hopped with a weapons treasure trove to
attract enemy.

Translated, this weapon means
underground sky -soaring thunder.

This is a booby trap landmine. It's one
of the earliest ever used in warfare.

On top of the hill will be treasures
that bait and draw the enemy in.

So in this case, a weapons cache.

Exactly.

Attached to the bait.

The lid of a pot containing smoldering
charcoal.

When the lid was raised, a lever would
drop a fuse to the embers, igniting it.

The fuse was connected to other pots
filled with gunpowder.

When the enemy took the bait...
Underneath this mound here, you'll have

channels with black powder going to
dozens of these pots.

So one trigger, but a whole network of
landmines. Exactly.

The frag is actually the clay pots.

When those explode, anyone standing
within about a 15, 20 -foot radius is

basically destroyed.

Okay, look, man, there's body parts all
over the place. I mean, you've got arms

dismembered. This guy's body is cut in

Look at this.

classic landmine injury, missing leg,
and from the shock patch, kills

well. Double dead, this guy.

I mean, arms are strewn. Look at the
blood pattern all over him.

There's nothing left of this guy.

Oh, dude.

Besides blood and guts.

This could be a game changer.

Four kills on this one.

But the French musketeers have an
explosive they believe is even more

The Grenade.

A cast -iron bomb filled with
projectiles of death.

The musketeers stuffed these grenades
with sharp nails and gunpowder. So

100 musketeers with 100 grenades,
throwing at the enemies. Big,

blow.

Sweet. Well, I think we've got the
perfect scenario to test this weapon.

Xavier, back here.

We've got our French fork.

Over here.

We've got our four Ming warriors, okay?
They're attacking the fort. I think we

want to see some fireworks.

Shock patches will measure the bomb.

Deadly blast.

I have a feeling this one's going to be
a big one.

Xavier, get in here, man.

We're on. Get suited.

Check that out.

Hey, mind your feet.

Wow. He was almost cut in two.

We're seeing, again, all forms of injury
here from this type of high explosive.

His leg is completely off. His chest is
caved in. I mean, this is just utter

annihilation of a human being. Let's
check out this guy over here.

I see our 100G shock patch is tripped.
That's a kill. What about the frag, Doc?

I'm not seeing any frag on the legs.

He's got blood, but it might be from the
guy over there.

He looks mostly intact.

Yeah. Remember, he's got the trip on the
shockwave, but he was thrown. And with

that throw, he could hit his head, crack
a pelvis, other ways of dying.

Okay, look at this. This is our 37G
shock patch, okay? That's roughly

to getting into a 30 miles per hour car
accident, and it's not tripped. He's

remained standing, but is there a frag
in him?

Unscathed on all accounts. He has no
shrapnel. He wasn't thrown to the

you thought this guy was lucky, let's

take a look at this guy. Yeah. His shock
patch isn't tripped either. He just has

blood spatter from his other two
friends, and it makes sense if you look

While the grenade is a very mobile
weapon, it just doesn't pack the same

This is a weapon of mass destruction.

So it's very effective in the combat.

Revolutionary Ming design had three

It's going to take a lot to get through

And Xavier, you'll be using your wheel
lock pistols to try to get through this

traditional Ming Dynasty leather armor
with steel studs. I'm going to start you

20 feet back. You'll get three shots
each.

Xavier reloads his wheel lock pistol at

When it fires, it's a big boom, and it
goes through that armor like nothing.

Can the Ming's black powder weapon do
any better?

Woo! Both warriors' weapons hit their
targets.

But which one was more effective?

Well, first thing I want to talk about
is the first shot. That's this one here.

I'm not seeing any penetration or any
injury. This is a very heavy armor. He

will be very slow. And he is not going
to be protected, his whole body.

Well, let's check it out. Well, that's
what brings us to the second shot.

Actually, if you look at his collar,
just above the armor plate.

Yep.

That is a perfectly placed shot. I mean,
you're going right through the trachea.

The windpipe, this is a kill instantly.
And you see it coming out the back.

That is perfect, but it's demonstrating
exactly what we were worried about. This

armor protects, but once you can deliver
it anywhere he's not protected, it's a

kill. But where did that third shot go?

You know, Jeff, the third shot's right
here. It's actually going right through

his arm here.

basically fracturing right up here. It's
going to shatter both the bones along

his forearm, probably get his elbow, and
you see it coming out the back end as

well. It's a lucky shot.

No. The rules were to shoot in the
armor. No. You shoot the head. You're

absolutely right, and let's go check
yours out.

Oh.

can't believe it. I'll tell you, most

important is, besides, as Jeff said, the
grouping, it's dead center of the body,

right where that big blood vessel aorta

through the thickest part of this armor,
double layer, plus through a rivet.

Three instant kills. And playing by the
rules. Et voila.

Well, I also remember misfire.

Despite the misfires, in the sim, these
are three instant kills through the

enemy's armor.

Armor on the Musketeer, on the other
hand, covers a large portion of his

surface area, and you need to have some
very lucky or some very accurate shots.

And the test was, weapon for weapon, did
it get through your opponent's armor?

Yes, in this case.

No, in Jonathan's case. Sorry, man.

When the three -barrel pull gun wasn't
able to punch...

In a head -to -head battle between these
killer soldiers, who would win?

The Musketeer's blade of choice was a
razor -sharp steel sword paired with an

equally piercing dagger.

The rapier and main gauche.

Designed to stab and thrust with deadly
results.

I'd like to introduce you to the early
17th century rapier.

It takes nothing for me to be able to
deliver over three and a half feet of

steel to someone. The other thing that
you have here is what's called the main

gauche, or parrying dagger.

This was used on suite with the rapier,
and you used the rapier mainly and only

for the attack.

And this would catch your opponent's
blade, sharp twist of the wrist, and you

could snap off four to six inches of the
tip of your opponent's rapier.

Awesome.

All right, so we're going to have you
striking against a target, which is?

About as lifelike as they come. And we
want to see how long it takes to get

lethal strikes against this target.

Yeah, because this is primarily a
thrusting weapon, I'm going to strap on

-Link three -dimensional accelerometer.
We'll be able to get the thrusting

impact velocity and compare that across
all the thrusting weapons we've seen.

Luke, are you ready? I'm ready!

I think this belongs to you, sir.

Okay, so we've got two deadly blows
right here in both eyes. You basically

this eyeball in half. You went through
the skull, hit the head. That's a kill.

The next strike, we go right to the
neck. This is a classic way of cutting

the jugulars as well as the carotid.
It's a beautiful strike.

Death strike number two.

Here, you went straight through the
heart.

That's another kill. That's three.

And then when we look here, this is the
disembowel move you wanted to do. You

actually went straight through.

which is again a kill. And that's four.
And I guess for your fifth one, you came

right back up and you took out the other
eye. So that's five ways to kill a

person.

Ming Warriors, what do you guys think?

I think I could do several different
strikes in continuous motion.

Instead of one, pull back, reset, again.

There's no one, pull back. It's one,
one, one, one. Five times.

As far as the thrusting speed...

5 .9 feet per second, which is roughly 4
miles per hour. Now, I'm guessing

you're sacrificing speed for accuracy,
correct?

Yes. With our weapon, we're not going to
have to sacrifice that much speed.

The main warrior's bladed weapon, it has
slicer and dicer with incredibly

versatile killing power.

The Ming Dao sword, serving a perfectly
severed body part.

The Dao is a single -bladed sword. It's
sharp on the...

top third of the blade, but the bottom
part right here is dull. So you can use

hand motions here to actually drill into
the opponent and use both harm

strength, then tear apart.

So you're claiming versatility and
robustness as opposed to a weapon that

commit to thrusting. Exactly. It's just
a savage weapon.

The musketeers will be chopped up.

To measure the damage of the blade on
actual flesh and bone, two peaks are

at human height.

Philip, you ready?

Ready. High speed's up and armed.

Accelerometer's streaming.

Three, two, one.

Cut him off.

Yo.

Fill it, man. Nice job.

I actually ran the numbers on that
initial thrust, and you know what? You

actually. faster than the rapier coming
in. They had about 4 miles per hour. You

had about 4 .9 miles per hour. And where
did you place that first thrust? Right

midline, where all the vital organs are
going to be and the penetration you got.

That would have hit the aorta.

And that is ridiculous. That's a lot of
power in that blade.

The thrust was comparable to the rapier,
but it also has that slashing

capability. The proof is in the pig.

It took 16 seconds for the musketeers to
achieve their five kill shots.

The Ming only took seven seconds.

I got to say, I'd rather stick with my
rapier. It's a really, really good

cutter. Remember also, I've got two
weapons, not one.

Even with the other dagger, you still
only have a thrusting capability.

I'd rather have my Ming Dao any day.

What do our experts think is the best
weapon? The Ming Dao is absolutely

devastating with both a thrust and a
slash.

That gives you options in the
battlefield.

When you've got options, it gives you
the edge.

For close -range weapons, the edge goes
to the Ming warrior for the Dao sword.

With the testing complete, only one
question remains in this battle to the

death.

The weapons that they're using seem a
lot more advanced than the weapons that

the Ming warrior is using.

I came into this thinking the Musketeers
were going to have it hands down.

But those Ming's much more deadly than
I've ever thought possible. I'm giving

edge to the Ming.

Coming up, Ming warrior, French
musketeer. The battle begins.

The Chinese Ming warrior against the
French musketeer.

Both black powder innovators.

But who is deadliest?

Our experts ran a series of tests on the
sophisticated soldier's most lethal

weapon.

The long -range weapon, the Ming's Nest
of Bees rocket battery, went up against

the Musketeer's musket.

The Nest of Bees is capable of doing
horrific damage. It's not the most

weapon. Now, the musket is able to
deliver a lot of damage, but deliver it

accurately. My edge goes to the musket.

Edge, French Musketeer.

Special weapons. We pitted the Ming's
mechanical landmine against the

musketeer's grenade.

That network of landmines, are you
joking me? And the amount of shrapnel

black powder they were able to pack into
that?

I gotta give it the edge.

Edge? Ming Warrior.

A mid -range weapon.

The Ming's three -barrel pole gun.

Shot it out against the Musketeer's
wheel -lock pistol.

I love the three -barrel gun, but could
it penetrate the Musketeer's armor? No.

Wheel -lock pistol went right through
that Ming leather armor, and it was bang

on every time.

Edge, French Musketeer.

Finally, in close -range weapons, the
Ming Dao sword competed against the

Musketeer's rapier and main gauche.

The DAO was way more deadly. It can be
thrusted and slashed. So the fact that

you could kill in two ways versus one, I
got to give the advantage to the DAO.

Edge. Ming Warrior.

Prevent their showdown from being won by
a single lucky blow.

The battle will be run a thousand times
in a simulation program developed by

Slytherin Studios.

We've got all the data from our test
loaded into our simulation, and there's

only one thing left to do. Let's fire it
up and see who is the deadliest

warrior.

Over the course of a thousand battles,
our Musketeers emerged decisively

victorious, with 674 kills to their
credit.

This was due in large part to the fact
that the Ming warrior couldn't really

hurt our Musketeer in the vital areas
that he needed to, thanks to the

of the Musketeer's breastplate.

And that's the biggest factor.

But I have to admit, I probably didn't
give the Musketeer's armor as much

as I should have.

That, to me, was the deciding factor in
this matchup.

I don't care what the numbers say on the
computer result.

The Ming warrior is the deadliest
warrior.

I like the Ming warriors, but I think
they should go back where they come from

and, you know, build walls. They're very
good at it.
