Kremlin's army of enforcers who sought
to annihilate the West.

And stain the world red with communism.

Versus the CIA.

America's Cold War operatives who fought
an international battle with undercover

assault and top secret tactics.

The men and women of both agencies
conducted a covert war on a shadowy

battlefield for over 40 years.

Even today, many of their run -ins
remain classified.

Now, to bring this undercover battle
into the light of day, computer whiz Max

Geiger will run a simulation between two
squads of Cold War warriors.

Our combatants today are the CIA and the
KGB circa 1979.

This being the height of the Cold War
and the height of their abilities.

These are two of the most feared and
ruthless intelligence agencies of the

century. They're going to use every
dirty trick in the book.

will test the effectiveness of each spy
agency's clandestine weaponry.

This is an episode where bigger doesn't
necessarily mean better. When you're

concealing a weapon, it's going to have
to be small. I have to rely heavily on

my high -speed footage to see if these
warriors can actually carry out their

covert kill.

The opposition, Armand Doria, will
examine the mortal wounds caused by this

War arsenal.

KGB versus the CIA. They're bringing
James Bond to us.

Weapons that we've never experienced

KGB agents

are tough as they come. Not only are
they physically

prepared, but their mental training
takes them far beyond the capabilities

regular human being.

United States use of the atomic bomb
brought a quick end to World War II.

But a new kind of war would soon follow.

The Cold War.

Soviet spies successfully stole details
of the bomb's construction.

With two nuclear -armed superpowers
threatening the other's survival, a

war was launched between their most
secretive branches.

The Soviets acquiring the atomic weapon
was a significant wake -up call and it

just only increased the sense of urgency
for preventing the spread of communism

around the globe.

Founded by President Harry Truman in
1947.

The CIA's sole mission was to counteract
Soviet activity that Washington feared

could trigger a nuclear showdown.

But halfway around the globe, the
Kremlin was determined to match U .S.

missile, and missile.

To help win the Cold War, the Soviets
formed a new spy agency, the KGB,

or Committee for State Security, in
1954.

The KGB was the eyes, the ears, hands,
and legs of the communist regime.

Interrogation, murder, kidnapping, they
were never bothered with collateral

damage. Inside the Soviet states, they
aggressively suppressed dissent.

Outside its borders, they quietly worked
to extend Soviet influence around the

globe. KGB was everywhere.

Hong Kong, Beijing, Los Angeles,
Atlanta, Washington, D .C., everywhere.

point, half of the staff of the Soviet
embassy in Washington, D .C., were KGB

agents. And when the KGB set their
sights on weaker countries, a hostile

takeover was imminent.

One of their most audacious actions
occurred in Afghanistan in 1979.

KGB special forces infiltrated Kabul,
executed the president,

and took control of the city in less
than 24 hours.

The CIA responded with an equally bold
action.

They secretly armed and trained Afghani
Mujahideen fighters to resist the Soviet

forces.

The Soviets suffered heavy casualties
and retreated.

The Afghans claimed victory.

The KGB and the CIA.

Battled each other for decades in the
shadows.

But in a head -to -head battle to the
death, who would win?

I'm giving the edge to the KGB. With
less respect for human life, I think the

KGB are that much more ruthless.

The CIA are badasses in a three -piece
suit and a college education.

This is going to be a close fight, but
I've got to give my initial edge to the

CIA. And the Cold War era CIA needed
fierce firepower.

They turn to a portable pulverizer, the
MAC -10 Submachine Gun.

Delivering dead, 900 rounds a minute.

MAC -10, built early 60s. It quickly
became co -opted by criminal

and narco -traffickers. You can see up
here, not a lot up front.

Very easy to get your hand around the
front here when you're on full auto. A

of guys walking around Latin America

It's 45 rounds. A lot of stopping power.
What does the CIA need this firepower

for? We've got a situation where we've
got to extract somebody. We've got to

have the type of firepower, if
necessary.

This is the weapon of choice.

KGB has a submachine gun that's just as
deadly.

Scorpion.

A sleek way to slaughter.

All right, this Corbin is 20 rounds, .32
caliber.

The speed is 850 per minute. Very nice,
slick design.

Sexy design, I'd call it. And the
precision of this gun is the best.

That might be the first time I've ever
heard the words precision and KGB in the

same sentence.

Both machine guns can be outfitted with
suppressors for undercover agency

operations.

But which gun can more quickly and more
precisely take out multiple targets?

We have five bone torsos. You guys are
going to come up in this van.

You're going to hop out. You'll each
have one clip in your respective guns.

You're going to fire, you're going to
get back in the van, and you're going to

peel out. And you will be timed for this
whole event.

KGB, you guys will be up first.

And let's let these guys have the last
miserable drink of their terrible,

terrible lives.

killed.

This guy's riddled across the belly.
This is an instant kill right here. So

do we have? Three kills, one wounded,
and one walking away.

Unscathed. So three kills in 12 seconds.

Do our CIA experts think you can do
better with a MAC -10? You know what, in

word, yes.

Which submachine gun will take the edge?

The CIA's MAC -10 or the KGB's Scorpion?

I'm going to give the advantage to the
MAC -10. Larger caliber, faster rate of

fire, and for me, it was more deadly on

The KGB is not easily taken out from the

They receive hardcore training from
Russian Spetsnaz special forces.

their operatives into unstoppable Soviet

killing machines.

But the CIA were equally deadly.

Many people in the intelligence
community are working in hostile

and sometimes those hostile environments
can turn on you. And the ability to be

able to defend yourself is absolutely
imperative.

Agents were trained in a variety of
combat, survival, and intelligence

-gathering techniques at Camp Perry in
Williamsburg, Virginia, known as The

Farm.

Training is performed with the U .S.
military, though details remain

methods. We're not going to open our
yaps and talk about things we're not

supposed to talk about. And I honor that
commitment very seriously.

American CIA or the Soviet KGB?

The intelligence business is a dirty
business. It's a rough business.

That's been the case since the invention
of intelligence.

One of the Cold War's most chilling
moments came in 1962 when the CIA

Soviet nuclear warheads being installed
in Cuba.

The missile crisis made Cuban dictator
Fidel Castro a prime target and inspired

one weapon that was harmless in
appearance.

Part of the skill of an intelligence
officer is being able to read people, be

able to understand what their weaknesses
and what their motivations are.

Some weaknesses can be a simple habit.

Big, bloating cigar.

Death wrapped in a cubit.

Sometimes a cigar is not a cigar. You've
got a small piece of C4 embedded inside

the cigar itself.

It has a thermite explosive in as well
to light it. So there's no detonator

involved, and it's going to explode, and
it's going to mess up somebody's day.

But how do you get the cigar to the man?

And there is a great deal of operational
work that has to go into lining

everything up just right so that it
becomes effective.

In the case of Fidel Castro, the
operational side was never successful.

But to check how CIA experts claim that
the cigar bomb can kill, Chance has

prepared a test.

We've got our gel bus set up. He is your
target. And what's different about this

one, teeth, eyeballs, tongue.

So the injury that we're going to see
here is a great representation of real

human injury.

The circumstances together are very low.

over there. He could have got a call and

Prior planning prevents piss -poor
performance.

This concept has worked in the past.

Oh, man.

That is some serious trauma. Except, you
know, it's still too small, and the

chances it's wanted against one million.

KGB has more sophisticated ways to get
the target like this. You think you can

do better? Sure.

I can show you a weapon that will blow
not only your head off, but your balls

with hole inside.

The KGB had their own powerful weapon
with hidden high explosions.

Cold War era agents use small containers
to secretly pass information to their

handlers, including... That dead drop
spike.

A tiny cylinder with a killer twist.

Since they contain valuable
intelligence, a dead drop is a prime

enemy interception.

To protect their private papers from
prying eyes.

The KGB developed a deadly modification.

It's a good way to take out, let's say,
double agents. Because if you don't know

how to open it the right way, it's going
to explode in your hand.

Boom. So it's an information protector,
but it's also a weapon to your enemies.

Exactly. It uses a very high explosive,

It could be as simple as clockwise

We've seen people shoot from the hip,

or you're shooting from the knee, and
you got the job done.

The KGB also had covert weaponry that
could pull off a public assassination.

This is a 1950s -made Czechoslovakian
8mm camera.

It's fully functional. You can shoot
film with it. You put the film in here,

comes up rather nice, actually.

However, upon further inspection, it has
an actual 22mm pistol inside the lens.

That's a sneaky weapon.

That's the place where you would
actually chamber the round and put it in

A swift kick of death.

This is a very small push knife. It goes
through the leather jacket, through the

armor, and it becomes a shoe knife very
easily.

Ooh. Ooh, cool.

Okay, but how would it actually be used
in the field?

This is not easy to detect when it's
concealed, so this would be something

you would have not only go on a mission
to eliminate somebody, but also to have

an offensive weapon with you at all
times.

Can a shoe knife really be lethal, even
if it hits a major artery?

To find out, a tic -tac will simulate an
enemy agent.

An accelerometer will measure the force
of their kick's impact.

Toc, are you ready?

Yeah. It all goes on, boys.

So your kick force off this that I
measured with the accelerometer is about

pounds. And that shoe knife turns you
into something deadly.

Yeah, I mean, let's talk about death
here. Now, the locations where he kicks,

you're going to get some arteries, some
veins that are going to bleed. So this

can definitely kill.

It's bloody.

It's brutal.

Right down the KGB line.

Because of this concealed weapon.

A deadly one? Who knows what happened to
the target?

Well, you just follow the bloody
footprints, and that'll help out, I

Boom. So if you kick like that and
actually hit the kidneys, they will

die, and it won't be that bad, because
it'll be inside the body.

one, chuck him out!

Yeah!

That's it.

This spine doesn't have the type of
ligaments set up like a human body, but

is as close as you're going to get. What
we see here is a clear demonstration of

how this weapon is... Perfect to go
straight through the skin and get right

through to these carotid arteries.

And, you know, you get the jugular
veins. I mean, it's an instant kill. And

gory part about this is as the head is
just about to flop off, that heart is

still pumping. Though he's unconscious,
that heart is spurting this blood.

They're hitting the floor dead.

No rocket science involved in the
garage.

This is a very lethal, very stealthy,
very quiet weapon.

You have to devise the whole thing to
get behind the target. Who knows? I'm

free. You know, behind, from the start,
from the front.

I think we can all agree that this was
very impressive.

So which weapon will prove more deadly?

One weakness I saw in the garage was the
requirement for surprise.

If you lose the element of surprise,
you're done with that weapon. For me,

differing variable is the fact that with
the garage, you can't come head on. But

with a shoe knife, you can come both
from front and from the back. Edge and

knife. For short -range weapons, the
edge goes to the KGB for their shoe

Our experts have completed their tests.

But there's one more thing to consider.
An X -Factor.

KGB had less restrictions on their
operation.

One distinguishing factor between these
two warriors is the oversight that the

American people have through certain
safety checks over the CIA.

KGB has no restraints. Because of that,
they might have that extra brutality

which will carry the day for them.

But the CIA, having won the Cold War,
has history as an X -Factor.

I think I'm going to give the edge to
the CIA because the United States

ended up dissolving the Soviet Union.

Having said that, I would never want to
face the KGB or have them hear that I

went against them.

For explosive weapons, we pitted the
KGB's dead drop spike against the

CIA's exploding cigar.

Advantage goes to the dead drop spike.
It works 100 % of the time.

The cigar is variable.

Is it in his mouth? Is it in his hand?
Is he putting out the cigar?

Edge KGB.

At long range, the KGB Scorpion
submachine gun, rivaled at CIA's MAC

I'm giving my edge to MAC -10. It has a
larger magazine and holds higher caliber

bullets than the Scorpion. It's just
able to do more damage.

Edge CIA.

Mid -range weapons. The KGB's one -shot
camera went up against the CIA's killer

briefcase.

With the Walter P .P .K. in your
briefcase, multiple shots, larger

bullet, it's going to get the job done.

Edge. CIA.

At close range, we compared the KGB's
shoe knot and the CIA's garrotte.

Both are great special ops weapons, but
the disadvantage of the garrotte is that

you have to sneak up on your opponent.
So I've got to give it to the shoemaker.

Edge, KGB.

The Wadon Squad battle will be run 1
,000 times in a fight simulation program

We've got all the results from our
tests, and the simulation is locked and

loaded. There's only one thing left to
do, and that's fire the sucker up.

After a thousand battles, the CIA won
550, the KGB's 450.

So it's due in large part to the
reliability of the CIA's firearms.

I thought the KGB were going to carry
this battle originally because of their

brutality, but I'm proud to have been
proved wrong.

This is a computer -generalized result.

In the real world, the KGB will outgun
and outman the CIA.

It was a good challenge, but quite
honestly, I think the better

the CIA, won.
