We're here to look at two of the most
dangerous warriors U .S. troops have

in history.

Waffen -SS, Viet Cong.

We're not here to argue ideology.

We just want to do clean tests of the
weapons and the warriors behind them.

AR physician Armand Dorian will weigh in
on the gruesome injuries caused by the

instruments of war.

We've got the Nazis who were the
aggressors, and then we've got the Viet

who were able to kind of ingrain
themselves into their own land and

themselves. From the United States.

Because we're dealing with modern
warriors who have automatic firearms and

explosives, there's too much of a chance
for a lucky kill here. So we're going

to be bumping the simulation up to

Wielding weapons for the Waffen -SS,
Silvio Wulbusch, an expert in German

War II combat organization.

There was no enemy, the Waffen -SS
feared, no matter who it was.

Also testing for the German team,
military historian Robert Wilhelm

The Waffen -SS were used as shock
troops, the elite of the elite.

No finer soldier ever fought a worse
cause.

Adolf Hitler, leader of Germany's Nazi
party, first formed the SS as his

personal bodyguard.

But by the start of World War II, the SS
had dramatically expanded, forming its

own special combat force, the Waffen
-SS.

They were indoctrinated. They were gung
-ho. They wanted to fight for Führer und

Vaterland.

They became the best equipped.

most fearsome force that the German
arsenal had to offer.

Led by the Wappen SS, the Nazi war
machine crushed nation after nation

Europe.

After the U .S. and Allied forces
invaded France in 1944, the Wappen SS

their warrior legacy.

After the G -Day invasion of Normandy,
the SS never quit.

They were able to achieve brilliant
battlefield success against all odds.

During the brutal Battle of the Bulge,
their relentless and savage assaults

more American lives than any other land
battle of World War II.

But ferocious tactics are also
trademarks of the Nazis' newest

Handling the weapons of the Viet Cong is
Vietnamese -born Tuan Nguyen.

A former U .S. Army grenade and firearm
specialist, Tuan knows firsthand The

savagery of the Viet Cong.

Viet Cong knew how to attack you from
all sides without any warning.

Born on an airbase at the height of the
Vietnam War, Danny Boyer is a firearms

expert and private security contractor
working in Southeast Asia.

An army of the Viet Cong was like an
army of ants. They could move mountains.

After the Vietnamese threw off their
French rulers in 1954,

The colony was divided along the 17th
parallel, separating the Communist North

and U .S.-supported South.

Communists in the South wanted unity and
launched a guerrilla war.

Their enemies called them the Viet Cong.

The French had vastly underestimated the
guerrillas, and the United States was

about to make the same grave mistake.

Up against the U .S. military, The Viet
Cong proved an unyielding opponent.

And ultimately, the American public
demanded an end to the war.

The Viet Cong were willing to fight for
the cause until the last foreigner

leaves the country.

So how will Vietnam's most feared
guerrilla fighters fare against the

most ruthless killers?

I've got to give this one to the Waffen
-SS.

They had a huge superiority complex, and
when you believe your opponent's a dog,

it's very easy to pull the trigger and
get the job done.

I'm giving my initial edge to the Viet
Cong. I think their unconventional

tactics are unlike what the Waffen -SS
are used to fighting, and also, were the

Americans able to defeat this opponent?

The answer is yes in the case of the
Waffen -SS.

No, in the case of the Viet Cong.

Some of the Viet Cong's most lethal
weapons were also their simplest.

17 % of all U .S. casualties were caused
by the V .C.'s sinister booby traps.

The Viet Cong booby traps were so easy
to make, not only that, but it instilled

psychological fear in their enemies, and
it was devastating.

It was a man -killer.

Hungy dates.

The Vietcong's toxic terror stick.

This is what makes the Vietcong famous.

It's just bamboo sharp enough tip.

Very sharp. Watch your finger.

These tips were usually dipped in human
poop has bacteria. And if that gets in

the wrong place, it festers and it can
grow. And when it grows, you become

septic and then you can die.

To test the killing power of this
primitive weapon.

might actually kill if it hits an

appropriate spot. They're not always
killing with the steak itself, but once

they fall and this penetrates, that's

This is only one method that the punji
steak was used as a trap. Our next

method, it's going to literally take
your head off.

Punji steak terror also came from the
sky.

The spike ball.

Talk about this, man. This is freaky
deaky here.

This is made of mud and molded by hand
and studded with punchy sticks.

And it weighs, I would say, about
anywhere 50 to 100 pounds.

They would swing it on up to the top of
the tree, tie a slipknot to it, tie it

onto a trip wire. Any soldier passing by
hits the trip wire, leaves the spike

ball swinging down at a deadly arc.

To test the weapon, the spike ball is
suspended and drawn back.

A ballistic gel torso with the same
density as human flesh and bone is set

directly in the ball's trajectory.

Danny, you ready on the court?

You know, we don't see a lot of puncture
wounds, but there's this one right

here, and this would hit right under the
spleen. If this spike was over a little

bit more midline, it would hit some
significant organs and would kill. But

if the spike didn't get you, you falling
on your butt, smacking your head on the

ground would kill you.

You've got to be kidding me, right?

I mean, this is being like at war with
the Flintstones.

Medieval, but then it worked. And here's
the evidence.

If a Waffen -SS soldier was to use this,
it would be court -martialing for

cowards who face the enemy.

gasoline and tar.

whatever it hit.

Have a look at this path that you've
just made. If there are any booby traps

you can move a whole platoon through

Realistically, what it's proven to me is
that fire does burn wood and it does

burn dry grass.

If there would be a Kong, they wouldn't
have been here. And I don't think your

operator would have gotten that close to
a hut like this.

Oh, man, you hit his feet first and his
climb was right up to his face.

I mean, this is not a nice way to die.
This is just sheer terror, sheer pain,

going down slow and hard.

As history has already proven to us,
flamethrowers didn't help the Americans.

The flamethrower in Vietnam wasn't on
the back of a Wachman's West Grenadier.

into an oil well to pluck the Viet Cong

out of the jungle.

Each team's special weapons are
terrifying.

But which one do our experts believe is
deadlier?

I'm giving the edge to the punji stick
weapons. With the flamethrower, you're

using resources.

That's a man to use that weapon. With
the punji stick weapons...

Completely powerful.

The flamethrower's devastation is point
-and -shoot. It's going to burn you to

death, and it's reusable. You don't have
to fall into it. I've got to give the

edge to the flamethrower. Edge
flamethrower. Edge flamethrower. Don't

anything. Edge flamethrower.

For special weapons, the Waffen -SS take
a flame -broiled edge with a

flammenwerfer. Nazi experts believe the
SS has an undeniable vantage.

If you're convinced that you're it,
you're it.

There's nothing that can stop me.

I believe that Germany was destined to
rule the world.

As the vanguard of this new world, the
Nazi Waffen -SS had strict physical

requirements. You couldn't even have a
filling in one of your teeth. I mean, it

was supposed to be the Ubermensch, the
super ray.

One had to be of pure Aryan ancestry,
which had to be proved back to 1750.

While the regular German army did
military drills, Waffen -SS recruits

to box, teaching them the importance of
striking the first blow.

There was close to a 30 to 40 percent
burnout rate. Just because of the sheer

physical stamina needed and expected
from Waffen -SS troops.

Viet Cong recruiting differed radically
from the meticulous standards of the

Nazis. The Viet Cong were a socialist
fighting army.

There was no room for elitism.

South Vietnam was a hostile territory
everywhere. That's why the Viet Cong had

to train on the go. That meant they had
more experience with the terrain. They

were better equipped to adapt and
survive in that kind of environment.

The Viet Cong even turned ammunition
shortages to their advantage.

The Viet Cong soldier only trained with
three rounds per day before they learned

how to make every round count.

You don't have to be good to join the
Viet Cong.

You join the Viet Cong, they make you
good.

They can the Viet Cong, I'll fight the
Nazi attack.

The Viet Cong, they were able to use two
things, their homeland and their

passion to defend themselves.

They thought outside the box. They were
able to create types of weapons that you

couldn't even imagine.

On the other hand, the Waffen -SS were
scientific warfare experts. They were

able to bring the technology and
orchestrate terror in their weapons.

The Waffen -SS's primary weapon was a
rapid -fire mechanical monitor.

The MP28 submachine gun.

Guaranteed to cut the enemy to ribbons.

The beauty here is the direct descendant
of the famous MP18, which was the first

submachine gun.

It's one of the best finely crafted
submachine guns ever. I can see how the

would be a very effective weapon in the
streets of Europe. But what I want to

know is how does it stand up in the
jungle?

To replicate the deep cover of a jungle,
the Vulcan SS experts will have to

shoot through a camouflage net.

Three robotic moving targets will act as
vehicle forces.

There's three targets and they all have
a headshot. And ten rounds in the upper

torso. But I've got something in the
Viet Cong arsenal that's going to take

a ton of Nazis.

The Viet Cong are ready to buy a bat
with their own automatic man killer.

The MAT -49 submachine gun.

Designed for surprise hit -and -run
attack.

This is the MAT -49, originally designed
and developed by the French, and the

Viet Cong actually captured this from
the French army back in the 50s. It used

the 9mm round.

It's a lead core with a full jacket
around it there.

9x19mm parabellum. This weapon fires
about 600 rounds per minute.

Ooh, it's light. Very lightweight.

And that's why the Viet Cong loved it so
much, because they had to be on the

move all the time in the jungle, in that
kind of terrain.

submachine gun performs outside of the

jungle, our experts have set up a D
-Day, Normandy invasion scenario.

explosives that will be going off,

but we also want to test the range and

dispersal pattern of this weapon. We've
got a number of targets set up, and so

we're going to see if that weapon can do
what you claim.

And one thing is you see the hollow
bottom here? So you can insert a wooden

stake and put this bad boy on and get a
trip wire.

That's it. You're done. You have less
than a minute.

By itself, the POMC -2 landmine can send
fragmentation flying at flesh -ripping

speeds.

Look at those guys. He shot his pants

But Green Patch Hunter G is tripped.

The Viet Cong can come close to the buff

The Viet Cong were better than the Nazis
because they had just fought three

modern armies and defeated them all.

The Viet Cong were all about surprise.

An easily concealed favorite.

The Tokarev TT -33.

A compact, body -dropping death dealer.

This is the Tokarev TT -33, slim, easy
to shoot, and it shoots a 7 .62x25mm

round. How many rounds in the clip are
we talking? Eight rounds, and at close

range, because of the smaller diameter
of the bullet, it actually can penetrate

through body armor that would usually
stop a .357 round.

This is considered the Red Army's hand
cannon.

But the Waffen SS had their own handheld
eliminator.

The Mauser P96.

Masterly machined to deliver rapid fire
destruction.

This is the Mauser Modelle Z 690.

The Mauser Model 1896.

Holds a 20 round magazine.

It's a 7 .63 by 25 millimeter.

Excellent accuracy to it because it's a
longer barrel. It's a simple yet robust

design and is often nicknamed the broom
handle because of the grip at the

bottom.

With test -built firearms, a head -to
-head test to evaluate the gun's firing

rate, accuracy, and knockdown power.

the edge with the Mauser C96.

With the testing complete, which of

I definitely think this is going to be a
close battle. It's going to be a very

intricate chess match between these two
warriors.

Our experts tested four weapons for each
fighting force.

For special weapons, the Waffen -SS
Flammenwerfer 41 flamethrower competed

against the Viet Cong's punji steak
weapons.

Flamin' Verfer is a firestorm in the
hands of the man who's using it, and

able to do a lot more damage than those
punji stakes ever could.

Edge Nazi Waffen -SS.

For explosive weapons, we compared the
Waffen -SS shrapnel -miner Bouncing

against the Vietcong's POM -Z2 mine with
an F -1 grenade. Surprise.

The POM -Z2 with the F -1 booby trap
were awesome.

The overriding factor was the booby
trap. When you add that F1 grenade

that basically sealed the deal.

Edge, Viet Cong.

The long -range weapon, Waffen -SS, MP
-28 submachine gun,

went up against the Viet Cong MAK -49.

I have to stick with the test results.
And what did we see? Both men had

obstacles. Both men had three targets.
Both men got the job done. Ed, this is a

draw. In long -range weapons, the
warriors are even.

Final. For short -range weapons, the
Nazi Mauser C -96.

Oppose the Vietcong Tokarev TT -33.

I'm going all Mauser on this one. Has
the option of going fully auto, plus you

got the job done fast.
