The Jesse James gang, they were brutal.

They murdered without any remorse.

Jesse James was born in Western Missouri
in 1847.

When he was just 14, the Civil War tore
the state apart.

Pitting neighbor against neighbor in
acts of unthinkable violence.

Jesse James was brought into a pretty
violent world. He was watching his

neighbors get killed. It was the most
politically violent time ever in this

country, especially in Missouri because
it was a border state between the north

and the south.

After the Union captured Missouri, Jesse
joined up with rebel militias hell

-bent on vengeance, making his first
kills bushwhacking Union soldiers.

The James gang were professional
killers. They were guerrilla fighters.

And this wasn't some chivalrous unit in
the Civil War.

A wanted man after the war, Jesse and
his gang used the skills they learned to

strike back, rubbing Northern -owned
banks and trains.

First daytime robbery ever recorded was
done by the James gang.

CEO of the underworld.

Meyer Lansky II is an expert on mafia
weapons and tactics.

The grandson and namesake of one of
America's most notorious mobsters who

with Capone during Prohibition. They
were in this business together.

Whether they liked each other or not,
that's a different story.

Johnny Lou Fratto gained his knowledge
of Capone operations straight from the

source as the son of Midwest Mafia boss
Cock -Eyed Louie Fratto, one of Scarface

Owl's top lieutenants.

If you were lucky enough to work for Al
Capone, you would make money. But then

along with that, you had to be tough and
you had to be very loyal.

Men suspected of disloyalty were quickly
dispatched by Capone himself.

He would not only kill people, but he
would disfigure them, brutalize them,

them. If he heard any rumor of anything
at all, he wouldn't even question it. He

would just kill you.

Capone's brutal reputation put him on
the fast track to success in the

underworld.

By the time he was 26, his empire
grossed more than $100 million.

Al Capone was untouchable because get
everybody bought off, the police, the

judges, the juries.

There was no way they could get Al
Capone. So how would this bloody

between two of America's most notorious
gangs go?

We haven't fired a single bullet yet,
but I'm giving this one to Capone.

He's bringing modern weapons technology,
and that'll take the game.

My edge up front is going to be to Jesse
James. History tells us that he's a

great marksman. And for me, the person
who can deliver that quick shot and the

kill shot gets the edge.

And the first weapon that James Kang
mastered?

The Colt revolver.

Dealing dead six rounds at a time.

When Colt came out with the revolver, it
revolutionized the industry.

The technology was amazing to people.
Before that, you had single shot, maybe

two shot guns.

The six shooter was like, wow, I can
keep shooting, keep shooting. In Jesse's

day, a lead bullet wound was even more
lethal than now. Back then, a simple

injury, a puncture wound, an amputation,
you're going to die.

To test these rapid fire killers, our
experts strap on their holsters and head

out to the firing range.

This thing is concealable.

It's portable.

You can fire them rapidly if you want.

The James gang was known for carrying
sometimes four revolvers at a time. I'm

noticing something. Different barrel

So it's three kills in just a shade over

High -speed footage reveals it takes
just a quarter of a second for Joey to

his first shot.

zone. So a drive, quarter of a second,

whatever he's aiming at is getting hit.

The James Gang rides in with Colt
revolvers, the Winchester rifle, the

whip, and the Bowie knife.

The Capone Gang fires back with a Tommy
gun, a pineapple bomb, brass

knuckles, and the stiletto knife.

When the weapons are all loaded and the
safeties are off, who will walk away

from this bloody beatdown?

The James gang is going to wipe the
floor with the Al Capone gang.

Al would be Jesse James because Al had a
very keen sense of killing. He had

better weaponry. He had the Tommy gun.

The Tommy gun.

A mechanized monster capable of mowing
down everything in its path.

Al's at the Thompson machine gun from
World War I. Al bottom.

He found that they were the most useful
tool for his business because of the

rapid fire, 600 to 700 rounds per
minute. They call them a chopper because

basically just annihilated anybody.

The Tommy Gunn became infamous through
the St. Valentine's Day massacre when

Capone put the squeeze on a rival gang
run by Bob's Moran.

The element of surprise is what Capone
used the most.

They went in there dressed as cops, put
everybody on the wall.

Mr. Tommy Gunn comes in, kills
everybody.

But is the Tommy gun as quick a killer
as Jesse James' revolver?

We're going to be testing how fast will
that weapon empty its magazine.

And also, how fast is your quick draw?
Because if the cowboy can take you out

first, you're toast.

You guys think you're ready for this?

Yeah, I'm ready.

Three, two...

Okay, let's take a look at this. I mean,
the Tommy gun is always impressive, but

this by itself is an instant kill. But
look at this. Braid him right across the

abdomen, cutting this guy in half.

This guy is a dead goner.

Next guy, right through his thigh, right
through his heart. He's got one right

under the sternum and right through the
apex of the heart, the tip of the heart,

which bleeds like stink.

This guy is going to die in a couple of
seconds.

This one is a little deceptive, guys. He
looks relatively clean, but where he's

been shot is an extremely dangerous spot
to get shot. It's a surgical nightmare.

It's very difficult to get to. These
guys die in about an hour. They're alive

long enough to basically spread your
legend, say who did it, and then die. In

summary, two insta -kills and one guy
who's going to die in about an hour.

Break it down by the numbers. Three
insta -kills with Jesse James.

Two out of three insta -kills with Al
Capone. Total wound.

Mortal Wound. It's called sloppy.

No. No talent.

This was quick. This was fast.

And there was no expert involved in
this. This is anybody holding that gun.

Anybody. You took your whole drum to
emptying all these guys, and you got a

kill shots, which means you missed most
of the time. The important thing here is

that it took 6 .32 seconds to empty that
magazine to get all those 50 shots out.

But there is one other number that we
need to see, and that's how fast your

quick draw is.

A high -speed comparison.

reveals that Jesse James' expert is able
to draw and fire the revolver in about

half the time the Capone team needs to
fire their Tommy gun's first blast.

It's entirely possible that as he's
bringing the gun up, one of our Jesse

gang members could just bail.

So just to be clear, who drew the gun,
leveled it, and fired in less than half

the amount of time it took any gangster
to fire their Tommy gun?

Thanks, J .W. That's great, but you
can't beat a 700 -round -per -minute

like I got. Don't just bring up speed
because you saw the speed on that horse.

Well, we had speed, too, only it was
called a car.

You know, it doesn't go to the bathroom
on the street or anything like that. So

why don't we see what this does from the
car?

So drive -by prohibition style? Do it.

The wheels of choice, a 1929 Hudson
Super Six, once owned by Al Capone's

brother.

White walls, suicide doors, a hit never
looked this good again. We've got the

same five targets, only this time
they've been swapped out. It's a bunch

toughs muffling in on Capone's turf.

25 yards total distance, five yards
between each target. We're going to be

measuring the speed of the car and your
hit and miss ratio.

Beautiful. Let's go.

Fire up the car!

You ready?

Three, two...

A look at the targets reveals that each
was hit just once.

Two of the hits are instant kills, and
the third is a mortal wound.

You're going to bleed, but it's not an
instant kill. This is going right here,

right behind the jaw. So it's going to
shut the guy up. He's going to fall to

the ground. He will bleed to death, but
it's not instant. This is going to take

at least a couple hours. And if he gets
his butt up and gets to an emergency

department, we can save this guy. All
you had to focus on was hitting these

targets with 50 rounds.

I only see one shot in each target.
That, to me, is a lot of wasted lead. I

agree with you 100%, but it doesn't make
a difference. They're both three kills.

Two. Three.

Two, one disputable. The weapon's
clumsy. You know, what we've got on our

is you can aim it, you can sight it
precision, precision, precision, and you

wasted a lot of ammo with a clumsy gun.

I hit the target more times.

Weak Kang's firearm is the better
killer.

Our experts are devised.

That Thompson I thought was going to
tear these targets up. It never did. I

mean, I'm blown away by the
ineffectiveness of it. I'm going to grow

balls here, and I'm going to give the
edge to Jesse James. I respect the

expertise we saw here.

But weapon for weapon, I still have to
give the edge to the Tommy. We had two

kills with the revolver, and we've got a
little bit more with the Tommy gun.

So I would give the edge to the Tommy
gun.

In a hard -fought battle, the Capone
gang takes a deadly edge.

The Tommy gun's fearsome reputation
doesn't faze the Jesse James experts.

Valentine's Day massacre?

Jeez, it was a massacre because they
couldn't get anything.

It took them so long and so many bullets
to get anybody?

Jesse James, to me, their legends are
bigger than they were.

We know the things that Al did. I think
we speculate a lot about Jesse James.

Coming up, the fight moves in close as
each gang launches wicked assault.

Jesse James or Al Capone.

Only one can be that deadliest warrior.

Inside the Fight Club, we're moving one

These two outlaws had very different
methods of running their gangs.

The Jesse James gang was a little
different than most because they

them. That may have worked for Jesse

But Al Capone preferred mixing
hospitality with homicide.

Al heard a couple of his guys were
dealing with a rival gang and trying to

about it. And the next thing you know,

they pull out a bat and just beat him to
death right there to let everybody else

in the gang know not to do that.

Then he would shoot him.

It's lucky they were having a spaghetti
dinner because there was a lot of blood.

When a gun was too much, the Capone gang
used a silent killer.

The stiletto.

Dead at the click of a button.

The stiletto.

Sharp, easy to conceal, very deadly.

What I like about this gun, it's
annoying.

Yikes. What an intimidating, wonderful
noise.

Probably the last sound a lot of guys
heard. I'm sure.

I don't want to be a downer here, but
when it comes to knives, size does

All right, and that's barely bigger than
a utility knife. Well, let's go see

what it can do.

Okay, Johnny, we have our ballistics gel
torso here. It's got tissue like a

human body. It's got bones. It's got
organs, a neck and a head. And you're

to use that stiletto to cause some
havoc.

Well, first I'm going to come over here
and I'm going to give him a big smile up

here, a rat smile.

This is what happens when you're a rat.

Then I'm going to come down here and
work on his gut for a little bit.

Okay, so that to me spells expeller
armor.

Let's go take a look at this damage
here.

Let's start with this.

This is a death strike. You cut through
here, you're cutting through the carotid

arteries, and you're actually cutting
through the windpipe. This is where you

seal the deal.

You actually pull out the gut. You went
straight for the belly. You're able to

get through the small intestine and
cause this mess.

I'm not that impressed.

I mean, look, I mean, it's like a
toothpick, something I carry around my

clean my teeth with.

I'm actually really impressed with what
you were able to do with that knife.

Oh, my God.

Look at the surgical cut. He's right
across the stomach. That's a death cut

right there.

This is good work.

It's like you're trying to make a
smoothie out of his gut.

An impact speed of 16 .5 feet per
second. It's like jumping out of your

onto the edge of that stiletto.

This is where I think this weapon is at
its maximum potential.

Nice and thin, and it can get right
between those ribs, right into that lung

heart. We've got our own answer to that.
We've got our own knife. And then a

toothpick, man. It ain't that little.

Jesse James carried a blade more than
twice the size.

The Bowie knife.

An outlaw's tool for cutting meat.

Or killing men.

Now this is named after Jim Bowie. This
was the weapon of choice for close

combat for anybody in the West. It was a
utility weapon.

as well as a weapon. You use this for
skinning, cutting your meat, filleting

your meat, gutting. This knife was used
for everything.

Okay, well, it's a multitasker. It's a
big weapon.

With that said, I would love to test
this and see if it can actually kill or

this is just overcompensation, cowboy
style.

What we have here is a pig. This is the
kind of tissue that you would experience

in a human. This is the best way to see
what kind of damage you could do with

that Baba Booey knife of yours.

We're going to attach the accelerometer
just like we did with Johnny.

The other thing about this knife is you
can throw it.

Okay, I'm definitely going to need my
gloves for this one. There's a lot of

straight through the belly. This is a

I mean, that by itself is enough to
cause death, but you went for more. You

straight from the back, and you went
straight through all of these ribs with

that knife and carved straight down.

It doesn't seem to be elegant or
beautiful or very subtle, but it

the job done.

Well, if I was your size, I guess there
would be a sword.

Bigger is not better. It's not even.

This isn't that big for me. Well, I got
to tell you, I'm not that impressed.

Bowie knife or stiletto?

Which blade has the killing edge?

Sure, the Bowie knife did more damage,
but the stiletto has a critical three

-inch blade that you need to get inside
between the ribs, the soft, squishy

part, and it's concealable.

Edge stiletto.

The edge goes to the Capone gang for the
stiletto.

Back in the battle zone, two of
America's most notorious gangs are about

fight to the death.

Chitty James.

And Al Capone.

The James Gang were fugitives.

always running from the authorities.

He had a network of friends and families
that would allow him to hide so he

could strike and then you wouldn't be
able to find him and people would

him. But the Capone gang didn't fear the
law since they bankrolled the majority

of Chicago's lawmakers.

They all had the money to make anything
happen. So if he couldn't buy it, then

watch out because he would just take it.

Capone had an explosive way to take what
he wanted.

The pineapple bomb.

A deeply grouped grenade.

A greater shrapnel.

Al Capone used to use these for
racketeering purposes. You'd throw it

business window.

You'd go in and ask if they wanted their
place fixed back up. If they didn't,

you'd put them out of business.

What kind of high explosives is that
bomb packing? We've got a cast iron

exterior, TNT on the inside.

It's got a 50 -foot radius with a 15
-foot kill zone.

To test that claim, a 1920s home
equipped with 21st century fences.

So, guys, with this pineapple bomb, two
ways to kill a man. One is the shock

wave itself.

Number two is the fragmentation.

How are we going to test that? We'll use
these shock watch patches.

We've got one purple shock patch, 37 Gs,
roughly equivalent to a 30 miles per

hour car accident.

The green one is a 100 G shock patch.

This white indicator turns red.

Red equals dead.

Okay, Meyer, you got the high speed in
place?

Do what you got to do, man.

Run! Run! Get out of there!

Okay, looking at my shock patches, only
the 37G is tripped. The 100G is not

tripped, but there's a fist -sized hole
in this man's chest.

It wasn't the shock wave that got this
guy. It was the frag.

Take a look at this target.

100G is tripped.

This guy is killed by the shock front
itself.

That's lethal.

Let's take a look at this guy. I don't
think you want to do that, dude. This is

the entire side of his head, and the
green patch is tripped.

Take a look at this guy, and I'm not
seeing any frag in the head, no frag in

chest.

Wow, one survivor.

He's a lucky one, that's all. And look
at the room. Yeah, the room. Well, we'll

call you if we want decorating tips. So
we'll say this, this house does look

like a pretty typical mafia construction
job, but the important thing here is we

have three kills and one dude showered
in bits of his friends.

Jumped it up to 3 ,000 frames per second
on this one because I really wanted to

take a look at that blast wave.

If you build your house like one of the

Look at the damage it did to the body.

That's nothing, man. When you see what

This is a weapon that was revolutionary
in its time.

You can hold 14 in your bottom chamber.

I mean, we've seen Capone's pineapple
grenade. How is this going to stack up?

There is no definite aim with the
pineapple grenade. You don't know where

going. This, you put it where you want
it.

When you see blood coming out of your
skull, we know it's coming from inside

brain. The most important part about a
fractured skull is a depressed skull

fracture. Once it goes inward, the
chance of lethality goes up

So this is a kill. If somebody gets that
type of a punch to the head, they're

going to die.

There it comes.

Okay, there is that skull fracture.

Brass knuckles are the best.

I didn't know about that.

The brass knuckles was just some nice
jewelry, but for taking somebody out, I

want a two -and -a -half -pound chunk of
iron that I can swing right against

arsenal was the whip. And when you were

Jesse James gang member, it was the
pistol whip.

And the pistol whip out bludgeoned Brass

Our experts have run their tests on the
weapons wielded by the brutal gangs run

by outlaw gunslinger Jesse James and the
notorious mobster Al Capone.

It's time to find out which of these
criminal outfits would kill the other.

Jesse easily comes out on top. The guy
can ride, shoot, stab. It's going to be

really no contest. Group of fighters
versus bad businessmen. In a toe -to

battle between Al Capone and Jesse
James, no question Al Capone would kill

all day.

Our teams tested each gang's deadly
arsenal.

For long -range weapons, we tested the
lethal range of the Winchester rifle

against the pineapple bomb.

While the pineapple grenade can do a lot
of damage to a lot of targets all at

once, you have to get up close and
throw.

The pure range and accuracy of the
Winchester rifle and skilled hands are

what makes the difference here. Plus,
it's pretty quick on the reload, so you

can drop a lot of targets.

My edge goes to the Winchester.

Mid -range weapons, the killing power of
Jesse James' revolvers, were compared

to Al Capone's Tommy Gun.

Hey, the revolver was very impressive.
He was very accurate with it. But you're

still delivering one shot. As opposed to
the Tommy gun, you're going to get

multiple shots.

Multiple shots mean higher chance for
death.

I got to go with the Tommy gun.

Edge, out the poke.

At close range, the James Gang's Bowie
knife was pitted against the stiletto.

The stiletto's piercing capabilities and
easy concealability give it an edge

over the versatility and enormous size
of the Bowie knife, which is really

overkill in post -corded combat.

Head out, Capone.

And in special weapons, Capone's brass
knuckles went head -to -head with a

Gang pistol whip.

It took three strikes with the brass
knuckles to get through that skull with

pistol whip, insta -kill, edge, pistol
whip.

To prevent this deathmatch from being
settled by a single bullet, this battle

between four -man gang will be run 1
,000 times in a simulation program

developed by Slytherin Studios.

We've got all the data we need to run
this, so let's just go ahead and fire it

up.

Over the course of a thousand battles,
we saw the James Gang rack up 544

victories, the Capone Gang's 456
victories.

This was due in large part to the James
Gang's ability to shoot more accurately

with their long -range Winchester and
also their revolvers. While the Thompson

submachine gun is certainly a fearsome
and devastating weapon, the firing

discipline that the James Gang
developed, their ability to quick -draw,

and kill accurately before the Capone
Gang could even raise their weapon, is

really what hammered this fight home.

Jesse James knew how to use his gun,
pull the trigger at super fast rate, and

kill every time. Jesse James gang got
lucky.

There was never a doubt in my mind.
