Homegrown freedom fighters who battled
the British army to a stance.

This is the Taliban.

Religious diehards now fighting their
own holy war to regain control of

Afghanistan.

ER physician and UFC fight doc Armand
Dorian will analyze the injuries these

fighters will inflict.

In this battle, we've got a lot of heavy
artillery. We've got flamethrowers,

RPGs, a lot of weapons, a lot of
destruction.

Biomedical scientist and karate black
belt Jeff Damelin.

will gather the battle data using his
high -tech tools.

That's what I'm talking about.

Test results will be tracked by computer
with Max Geiger and entered into a

program designed to simulate combat
scenarios.

We'll be simulating things like
explosions, damage a bullet's going to

peers through you. We're doing five -man
firefights in order to determine who is

the deadlier warrior.

Program will turn this information into
a blow -by -blow bloodbath between the

two forces.

The last one standing will be the
deadliest warrior.

The Taliban weaponry will be wielded by
two experts on guerrilla warfare.

Ready? Fahim Fazli, a former Afghan
freedom fighter who left the country

the Taliban took over.

Taliban rather have this than food.

They believe this one more than their
woman.

Iranian -born Alex Sami, a former FBI
agent who was trained in

He's an expert in Taliban training and
weapons.

The Taliban uses terror and fear as
their main tactic.

They want everyone else to realize how
much power they have.

The Taliban were born in Cold War -era
Afghanistan.

The Taliban can be traced back to the
late 1970s when the Mujahideen, the

freedom fighters of that time, were
established to fight off the Soviets.

In 1989, the freedom fighters forced out
the Soviet invaders.

The Taliban controls the battlefield.

Civil war broke out in the aftermath,
and Muslim extremists, the Taliban,

for control of the war -ravaged country.

The Taliban is the perfect fighters.

When they were 12, 13, when the Russians
invaded us, they were freedom fighters.

Now they're 35, 45.

Now you're going to be export.

With ruthless efficiency, the Taliban
quickly gained control over 90 % of

Afghanistan. Then they waged holy war
against all non -believers.

Their main goal is to remove the Western
influence out of the Middle East. They

believe that their mission is actually
divinely inspired, which ultimately

to make you ruthless in the cause that
they're fighting for.

Once you join them, you belong to them,
you die for them.

They can defeat anyone.

IRA is nothing.

Our IRA experts believe the Irish rebels
will be the ones dishing out death.

Scotty Collins is an expert on IRA
history. His great uncle was famed Irish

revolutionary leader Michael Collins,
who helped organize the IRA after the

Easter uprising in 1916.

The Irish are fighting for their land,
and they'll go to any measures to get

Peter Crow is an authority on the
weapons and culture of the Irish

Army. The Irish had the balls to get the
country back.

A soldier who's willing to die for the
sake of the cause is dangerous.

The British have controlled Ireland for
over 800 years.

After Ireland lost the War of
Independence in 1920,

The country was divided in two.

A free state was created in the
predominantly Catholic South, while the

Protestant North remained a part of
Great Britain.

The IRA emerged to fight for Irish
independence by launching armed attacks

against their British occupiers.

British government tried to put it down
as a sort of ragtag and bobtail outfit,

but they were more organised than they
were made out to be.

In the 1960s, bloody riots broke out in
Belfast and Londonderry. Some hardcore

footage. Marking the beginning of three
decades of violence.

In Belfast, every single day there would
be an incident.

It might be a bomb blast, it might be a
shooting.

There was always something happening,
period.

So how would an IRA rebel, fighting for
his country's freedom, fare against a

Taliban soldier who believes his most
powerful ally is gone?

The British can't be easy.

Come on, how can the Taliban?

The Taliban defeat British or Russian?

IRA is nothing compared to all these
other countries.

If I had to compare the Taliban to
something, I'd compare them to like a

cockroach. You know, no matter what you
try to do, they somehow skirt away and

keep giving you problems.

I think the IRA is going to beat them.
They fought the British military for

30 years and were successful.

That says a lot for them.

IRA operatives were greatly outnumbered
when they fought against the British

military machine.

To make up for the lack of manpower, the
IRA attacked in small guerrilla cells

that would ambush the enemy.

One of the most unexpected weapons in
the IRA's arsenal was used in a surprise

assault against a British Army border
post in 1989.

The LPO -50 flamethrower. It can fire
flesh -burning flames from over 200 feet

away. This is the ground, Addy. This
will do it.

So what are you using in the tank? What
kind of fuel?

Oh, you've got nitrogen. You've got it
on one side. You've got gelatin, a

mixture of petroleum on the other side.

Same napalm.

Okay. Same effect as napalm. Okay, well,
I know one thing's for sure. We cannot

test that here. Not here.

Max, pack your bags, man. We've got to
head out to the range.

Okay, how is the IRA going to take the
Taliban out with this weapon?

What this is going to do for the IRA is
it's going to flush the Taliban out

their holes, their caves.

To see if Scotty is right, the team has
rigged a cave occupied by two enemy

combatants. Jeff has placed temperature
sensors on the target.

Since the LPO -50 flamethrower is a
Russian weapon and is unavailable in the

United States, we're testing an
equivalent model.

Are you ready? Ready? Yep.

Three, two, one.

Light them up, Eddie!

Woo! Light it up! Woo!

800 degrees and climbing now.

That's about 1 ,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Jesus. 1 ,500 degrees Fahrenheit is
almost as hot as the inside of a

crematorium. Once you're burning, you're
burning. That's it. Crispy critter.

Who's going to just stand there?

If you are in that direct range of that
flamethrower, you're not only cooking

the outside, you're cooking the inside.
And cooking your bones creates more heat

inside, and you cook even after getting
away from that spray. So you're still

suffering even though the spray has
stopped.

But is the flamethrower's firestorm
enough to take down the Taliban?

There's already low -light conditions,
and the fire's eating your oxygen as

you're trapped in there. There's no way
out.

The temperatures I was able to get from
this was about 1 ,500 degrees

Fahrenheit. Skin burns at 1 ,400 degrees
Fahrenheit.

There's no cover up against the
flamethrower. Fire engulfs. It moves

things. It's very organic.

Guys, I think one of the things that
you're forgetting here, they have to get

extremely close.

The person with the flamethrower on
their back is not going anywhere.

It's basically a suicide mission. It
doesn't hold any water compared to the

Before you get close, the Taliban can
destroy you with RPG.

You're gone, buddy.

Inside our L .A.-based weapons lab, two
teams of guerrilla fighters are gearing

up for a squad -on -squad showdown to
question if an Irish Republican Army

went up against the Taliban cell.

Who would win?

The Taliban think they're dying for
their country. They don't like invaders.

Anybody invade Afghanistan, they're
enemy.

They don't come any tougher than the
Irish.

Anything less than giving your life to
your country would be shameful.

Each team brings a deadly arsenal to the
fight. The IRA will fire the LPO -50

flamethrower, the nail bomb, the
deceivingly simple slingshot.

and the AR -15 assault rifle. The
Taliban will blast back with the RPG -7

launcher, the PMN mine, the bayonet, and
the AK -47 assault rifle.

Like the IRA, Taliban militants fight in
small squads.

They use hit -and -run tactics where
they open fire and then flee.

These fast -moving fighters favor
weapons that can create maximum damage

distance. My friend, as long as you have
this baby, they can destroy anything.

The RPG -7.

A shoulder -launched, rocket -propelled
grenade that can stop a tank in its

tracks. It can also spray deadly shards
of shrapnel in an anti -personnel

attack.

So the Taliban answer to the
flamethrower is the RPG, or rocket

grenade. It's the most widely produced
and portable rocket round.

Well, what kind of blast radius does it
have?

Well, the blast radius is four meters,
but on top of that, all the shrapnel

goes from there makes it a lot more
effective.

Okay, what's its effective range?

If used properly, it can go up to 920
meters, but someone can shoot up to 100

meters without any training.

What do you say we take it at 100 meters
and we'll take out this hut? Let's do

it. Okay.

Jeff rigs sensors to the targets around
the hut to measure the force of the

blast. So when we're talking about these
shock patches, 37G rating is similar to

getting in about a 30 -mile -per -hour
accident.

But this 100G patch, if we exceed that,
it's a kill shot.

So white's not lethal.

Red equals dead.

Ready.

Three.

Two, one, go!

The grenade explosion demolished the
hut. But was the blast big enough to

the surrounding soldiers?

Here's our 100G indicator, gone red.

That's a kill.

Insane, man.

How do you like that from 100 meters,
huh?

There's nothing left of the structure.

We have three targets on the outside.
All three.

Killed.

You can't argue with this.

Flamethrower, 30 meters.

This, 100 meters.

If I was going to go with the weapon of
choice, this would be it.

That's complete obliteration.

Here's our sentry.

There's the two legs of the sentry.

Here's the torso of the sentry. The head
of the sentry.

debris flying everywhere.

I mean, you don't want to be anywhere
near that explosion.

But do you think the IRA would be
standing outside a shack just standing

going like... The IRA would have
lookouts around waiting for you coming.

But how far are the IRA going to be
watching? Because this can fire up to

meters. It's a combat situation. They're
going to be watching for you, waiting

for you.

Bottom line is, if I was going to go to
war, this is the weapon I would take,

not a flamethrower.

After testing the flamethrower and the
RPG, our experts are divided over which

weapon has the advantage.

Weapon on weapon, I'm going to have to
give it to the RPG simply because the

effectiveness of that weapon when it
does hit is completely devastating.

The flamethrower is a nightmare weapon.
I can't think of a worse way to die than

being burned alive.

The deciding vote goes to Dr.

Dorian. A flamethrower is a little bit
more dramatic, a little bit more

Hollywood. It does cause some trauma and
some burning, but the RPG has a lot

more punch to it. I got to go with the
RPG.

The Taliban's RPG gets the edge in
medium -range weapons.

But in fact, it's the man behind the
weapon that matters most.

The biggest reason a soldier would join
the Taliban is because they believe that

they're doing this in the name of Allah,
in the name of God. They start training

these recruits at a young age. They
instill that hatred into them. So as

get older, then they have the sense of
duty for the Taliban.

Passed their sons, sons passed to their
brothers.

Death and their blood fight forever.

Taliban recruits are trained in
intelligence and terrorist tactics.

Their training camps were in Pakistan
where they would start off in the

with like a morning prayer.

They'd go on a very long run, kind of to
instill that discipline.

And then from there they would go into
the different various weapons training.

When you have modern technology at your
disposal, when you have constant

training and you know your terrain
better than anyone else, they're very

convicted and they're willing to put
their lives for the Taliban.

I think the Taliban play on this God
thing too much.

He's not protecting them any better than
the Irish are protected, I'll tell you

that. IRA operatives are equally
committed to their cause.

You cannot take a man's country and
expect him to bow down.

It's not going to happen, especially in
Irishmen.

IRA soldiers are born into battle.

You can't walk and join the IRA. That's
not something you can do.

You're born with it. It's inside you.
These Irish people generally don't have

nothing, and they're doing it for free.

They're not fighting because they're
getting paid for it. They're fighting

because they have to.

IRA training focuses on urban warfare,
with missions carried out by small cells

on city streets.

The IRA four -man team, you can get in
quicker, get the job done quicker, get

out quicker.

IRA is nothing.

IRA is fighting once the blue moon. Look
at the Taliban.

They fight every day.

Coming up, the IRA and Taliban launch
their explosive assault.

It's the type of thing the IRA can make
in the backyard.

In a battle to become the deadliest
warrior.

Inside our LA weapons lab, two teams of
guerrilla army experts are preparing for

a one -on -one war between the notorious
Taliban.

and the secretive Irish Republican Army.

Each side in this guerrilla battle is
armed to the teeth.

The Taliban believe they have to fight.

Each house you go, knock the door, hi,
how are you? You see guns hanging there.

We have to have a gun.

The IRA either obtained weapons on the
black market or built their own devious

devices.

Hype bomb. Seems very simple, but very
lethal.

This is the type of thing the IRA can
make in the backyard.

The IRA developed a bomb for every
situation and a fiendish variety of ways

set them off.

You can be 200 feet away, you can be 300
feet away. It works on the same order

as your TV remote.

Isn't that scary?

One of the most treacherous weapons in
the IRA's arsenal was also one of the

easiest to make.

The nail bomb.

A homemade explosive packed with nails
that delivers devastating injury and

death. This is a classical nail bomb.
The simpler they are, the more effective

they are.

It's like shrapnel.

It's like a grenade going off. Boom, off
it goes.

It's going to hit you in so many
different places that you're probably

die from bleeding out. It's not a death
kill with one shot. It's a death kill

with multiple shots.

It depends how much destruction the nail
bomb will cause when detonated. Our

team sets up a moped surrounded by enemy
soldiers.

This is stuff that you can get at a
local hardware store or do -it -yourself

store. Well, everything except for the
Semtex. Correct. And Semtex is a mixture

of two high explosives, okay?

And from what I'm seeing here, that's
about a pound and a half. It only takes

about a half pound to take your hand
off. But we've also got fragmentation,

any time we're talking about high
explosives, fragmentation is the number

killer. It's a dangerous weapon. We
don't want to fool around with stuff

this. So we're bringing somebody else in
that's going to show you how we do

this.

Our explosive expert carefully sets the
bomb into position.

Since the nail bomb can detonate at even
the slightest shift, the device will be

remotely triggered from a distance.

So we're ready with the nail bomb in 15,
5, 4, 3, 2,

1, go!

Holy...

Where are the flames coming from?

Moped. Oh, the gas tank. Of course,
that's insane.

There's crap everywhere.

I can't believe that. What are we, 180
feet out?

Look at these nails sitting in the body,

This is far more severe than I ever
thought this thing would.

More nails than this guy. One, two,

Imagine if you got four or five of them
scattered all over the place at a

delayed time.

Let's head back to the dojo and take a
look at the high speed.

The high speed camera will help analyze
the impact.

And that's got to be, what, 40, 50 feet?

There's no question these are two kill
shots.

It's crude, but effective.

These bombs are a dime a dozen, you
guys. This is the kind of devastation

can make without putting a lot of money
in.

That's bomb, and everything around us
devastated.

It's a surgeon's nightmare.

You have so many injuries that you don't
know where to start. A nail bomb is

going to cause a lot of trauma, and it
causes death.

Despite the damage, the Taliban experts
believe they have an even more

devastating explosive, a landmine that
delivers death without anyone having to

engage the enemy.

All I have to do is leave it at that
spot and step on it. You're flying,

They're all gone.

PMN mine.

A deadly case packed with four times
more explosive than a standard landmine.

If I had to pick of all the weapons I
could eliminate from warfare, it's these

mines. Because not only is it killing
people in war, but it's also killing

unarmed kids.

It disfigures, it maims, and it causes a
lot of agony for the rest of that

person's life.

What they do is they lay several of them
across the road, cover them up.

and slowly pull out the pin. What
triggers it is 8 to 25 kilograms of

That's what will actually make it go
off.

To measure the damage the mine will
inflict, Jeff and Max set up several

ballistic gel body parts.

Let's go for it, man. Let's do it.

Wow, that's... You know what?

That's textbook.

I fully expected this to take the full
leg off.

What I'm seeing here, these guys are two
questionable kills. One guy dead

without a leg, and this guy, I gotta
say... May have been unscathed. May have

been unscathed, and one more kill over
there. So out of five targets, we got

deaths. And that's with just one PMN.

What I saw here from the injuries is
that you amputated this leg from the

Typically it's not, although some people

If you can get that person into a
hospital, they usually don't die.

In war, it does cause death because you
can't get that person and get him to a

medic to take care of that severed leg.

Each guerrilla force has a disturbingly
effective bomb, but which brings more

heat to the fight?

The PMN mine is designed to take out one
person rather than multiple people, and

this is a squad -on -squad fight.

Hence, more damage to more people. I've
got to give the edge to the nail bomb.

The special weapons.

The IRA nail bomb gains a nasty edge.

In this high -tech fight club, our
guerrilla army experts are preparing for

duel to the death between the Taliban
and the IRA.

Two masters of surprise attack.

The Taliban, their main goal is to keep
distance. You don't even know that

they're there until the explosion goes
off and then they attack again.

The IRA has lots of sniping, riot
ambushes. They didn't just, like, grab a

weapon from the cupboard and just go in
the street and attack the patrol.

They mapped it out, planned it out, set
it up.

and put in their attack.

For maximum flexibility in combat, the
IRA and Taliban equipped their squad

a variety of weapons.

Fire teams could switch seamlessly
between long -distance firepower, short

-range explosives, and top -line semi
-automatic rifles.

The Taliban's gun of choice is the
iconic AK -47.

The most widely used assault rifle in
the world, the AK -47 earned legendary

reputation.

due to its ruggedness and reliability.

You can use this one in the water.

You can use it in bad weather. You can
use it in the rain. Everybody knows AK

-47 is the best.

But the IRA has a long -range rifle of
their own, one they claim is more

accurate. The AR -15, semi -automatic
rifle that can fire 800 rounds

per minute with pinpoint precision.

The IRA could have got their hands on
the AK -47, which they did, but the

preference was the Armalite. It is more
accurate, better rate of fire.

At the end of the day, we'll see who the
stronger one is.

To settle the debate on which fighting
force has the deadliest rifle, the team

heads to the firing range.

Look, the IRA has been bragging a lot
about the accuracy of the Armalite.

What can the AK -47 do?

They can brag about that a lot. It's a
cheap gun and it jams a lot. This is

they used against the Russians, and it's
currently what they're using against

the American soldiers.

Let me show you what this gun can do.

High speeds up and armed.

Three, two, one, go.

Holy crap.

Oh, yeah.

Okay, got it.

How's that for accuracy?

Well, there were two misses on the
bottom rung there in the small glasses.

the Taliban, their style of shooting is
to spray. They're usually going after

many people in one area. This isn't a
sniper rifle.

And, you know, it's not going to be like
a cheap weapon like they use. But look

at the time it took you to hit these
targets.

It did take some time. I mean, again.

The IRA in and out in no time at all. I
mean, bang, bang, bang, gone, done.

You already saw what this can do. I want
to see what can the IRA do.

Well, we'll show you.

That's eight of the Taliban down.

You know, large diameter balls,
whatever.

But the small diameter balls, I'm really
impressed.

But if you take that size and put it
into this area here.

Center of mass of the face. That's the
no reflex kill zone. If you hit somebody

in the nose, right between the eyes,
you'll be killing the central nervous

system before the body has a chance to
even have a reflex.

So he's not even going to get a shot off
as he's dying.

But accuracy is only one part of the
equation.

How would these weapons perform under
real combat conditions?

It's raining.

Terrain similar to this. You're crawling
through the mud. You're crawling

through the dirt.

Maybe you get some in the breach.

Rifle, please.

So to me, the most susceptible part of
this weapon is this right here. You get

mud in here, you're in trouble, right?

How do you like that?

I'm telling you, man, when I worked in
the police department, we had the AR

and it would jam up all the time.

AK versus Armalite on a reliability
test. AK wins hands down.

death. At the end of the day, I'm going
with first strike, first kill,

especially when it comes to firearms.

So in my personal opinion, edge to the
Armalite.

I like the Armalite because it is the
more accurate weapon, but I like the AK

-47 because it is the more reliable
weapon. I'm totally torn on this one. I

really don't know which weapon to pick.

not a moving target. Generally, when
you're in a battle zone, it's a moving

target. That's going to be a very
difficult shot to pull off. It's always

in the battlefield.

But this guy here, he's down. He's

Despite its precision, the slingshot may
not strike with enough force to deliver

a death blow.

Dead in the eye. Look at that. Look at
that shot.

I am so completely sold on the accuracy
of this weapon. Right inside the orbit,

right where he said he was going to put
it. Blinding blow, but no lethality

here. Let me give you one credit. You
did say you were going to hit the eye.

The Taliban has a weapon to counter the
IRA sling.

The AK -47 bayonet.

A razor -sharp knife.

that transforms the Taliban's gun into a

Between the ArmaLite and the AK, I have
to go with the ArmaLite. Sure, there's a

little bit of an issue of reliability,
but it's faster.

That's the more evolved and more modern
weapon.

Taliban's RPG -7.

I'll fire the IRA's flamethrower. The
RPG is like the hand of God. It can

obliterate anything it seems to touch.
There's no stopping it. It's an absolute

nightmare. Edge Taliban.

In close quarter combat, the Taliban's
bayonet had the edge over the IRA's

slingshot. The bayonet's better than the
slingshot because it does massive

damage. It turns your gun into a spear.

And the special weapon, the IRA's nail
bomb, blasted the Taliban's

PMN mine.

The PMN was only designed to take out
one man at a time, whereas the nail

multiple targets, and can be detonated
remotely.

Since both fighters conduct their
missions in small cells, Max sets the

to simulate a squad -on -squad skirmish.

The IRA won this fight because even
though the Taliban's weaponry was very

reliable, the IRA's weaponry was just
much more devastating and capable of

inflicting damage at a squad level.

Taliban's AK -47 and the rocket
-propelled grenade both had kill tallies

triple digits, but it wasn't enough. The
IRA's AR -15 assault rifle proved to be

the single most deadly weapon in the
battle.

Taliban are really good at holding off
armies or fighting against large

but when it came down to a five -on
-five, the IRA prevailed.

I'm pretty surprised.

If they give them a chance in
Afghanistan, probably it's going to be a

ballgame.

The IRA's never been beaten by anybody,
and it never will be.
