Biomedical scientist and karate black
belt Jeff Damoline wires high -tech

sensors to the weapons to collect battle

So this is a different kind of matchup
than we've seen before. We've got modern

warriors, east versus west, but
particularly we've got firearms.

Dr. Armand Dorian will analyze the
injuries the warriors and their weapons

the results of each test into a program

designed to reproduce combat scenarios.

These are some of the most deadly, some
of the most aggressive, and some of the

most lethal opponents that I have ever
seen square off.

Ordinarily, I would be boiling this down
to a one -on -one fight.

However, we're going to have to pull

the Green Berets and the Spetsnaz were

bitter enemies.

But these soldiers from opposing
superpowers have never actually faced

I was trained to kill them. They were my
enemy when I first joined the army.

Matt Anderson is a former Green Beret.

Matt served in special ops in the first
Gulf War.

I can kill somebody by putting a round
into their chest at 1 ,000 meters, and I

can do it over and over again.

Green Beret Staff Sergeant George Gomez.

George trained soldiers in weapons and
tactical ops at Fort Bragg.

He served in Bosnia, Kosovo, and
Afghanistan.

If I go up against somebody, he's not
coming home tomorrow.

Green Berets were founded in 1952 as
part of the U .S. Army's Special Forces.

Their first mission was in Vietnam
against the Soviet -supported North.

Before Vietnam was even a name on
anybody's lips in the United States, we

already there.

Since then, the Special Forces have been
involved in almost every conflict the

United States has fought.

Army Special Forces was the majority
force when we went into Afghanistan.

We've knocked the Taliban down in
months.

But how will the Green Berets fare
against one of the world's most lethal

special forces?

Very good. We have some tools.

Solely as Sonny Puseykin.

Sonny was a spent -less combat
operative.

He did that dirty work for the Russian
army.

Surrender should not be an option for
Spetsnaz soldiers.

Maxim Fran, former member of the Russian
naval Spetsnaz.

Maxim served as part of a two -member
sniper.

Guns just don't do the job. People do
the job.

Spetsnaz soldiers are part of the
Russian army's special forces.

Even today, their missions remain
shrouded in secrecy. Green Berets are

of us.

The Taliban, folks in Chechnya, they
were terrified.

The Spetsnaz were the strongest soldiers
on the battlefield, and their training

turned them into cold -blooded killing
machines.

One of these things never left your
pocket.

You are not to be taken alive. That was
the training.

And Soviet Spetsnaz have over 40 years
of combat experience.

So which side do they think will be the
better soldier?

The Green Berets have no chance.

We're going to bring a hell of a lot
more to the fight.

They're soft.

They're not trained to think the way
we're trained to think. They're weak.

They're going to fall short. No one's
tough enough to take a couple rounds to

I would be hard pressed to find a
warrior culture in history that would

Pre -game predictions, I'm going to have
to go with the Spetsnaz. Although the

Green Beret is bringing the latest
technology, I think the Spetsnaz is

I have to give the edge to the Green

They're from the United States, and
that's my hometown.

One of the Green Beret's most lethal
firearms packed a hell of a pipe.

The Mossberg 590 shotgun.

A 12 -gauge pump -action gun.

With the same four shots, we can
probably do it in about half the time.

The Russian answer to the Mossberg, the
Sager 12 -gauge shotgun, a rapid -fire

weapon designed for urban assault
operations.

Since the Sagers are semi -automatic,

targets, different ranges, different

So what I'm seeing here is the semi
-automatic weapon is a huge advantage.

You only have to do this in order to get
the next round off. A second and a

half, three rounds, right in the neck
while you're on the move. But the Green

Berets remain unimpressed.

I don't care for their method.

That run and gun, flippy twisty, we do
combat rolls. It was very sexy looking.

The time it takes for him to do a fluid
combat roll down there, I can do this.

Bang.

Between the Mossberg and the Sega
shotgun?

No question. Sega shotgun because it's
semi -automatic and you don't have to

pump it.

Medium range shotgun. The edge goes to
the Spetsnaz Sega.

Inside a fight club, two elite teams of
combat veterans are gearing up for a

The question, if a squad of American
Green Berets fought a Russian Spetsnaz

fireteam, who would win?

We do a lot of movements.

That's why our technique and training is
much better than yours. If you

absolutely need to have a backwards
flipping hatchet attack, then you call

Spetsnaz. Yours is really fluid, but
you're dead.

Each warrior brings his own arsenal of
deadly weapons.

Green Beret wields a Mossberg shotgun,
the entrenching tool, the M4A1 carbine,

the Beretta pistol, the M24 sniper
rifle, and the M67 grenade.

The Spetsnaz is armed with a Sega
shotgun, the ballistic knife, the AK

the Makarov pistol.

The Ragnarok sniper rifle and the RGD -5
grenade.

Look at this. We can even throw some
things at them Americans.

The RGD -5 hand grenade.

A near certain guarantee for critical
injury or death for anyone within three

yards.

This is a whole new avenue, a whole new
venture with regards to trauma. We've

seen bullet wounds, but now we're
dealing with explosives.

I'm really excited to see what these
grenades are going to do, so I can't

to get out in that field and see the
test.

Okay, guys, our next test setup.

The grenade goes inside here.

The washing machine will simulate the
effect a grenade would have on a vehicle

surrounded by soldiers.

What do you got for us? This is a basic
grenade, RGD -5.

The radius of fragments that do the
damage to you, they injure you around 25

meters.

We might need the Maytag repairman on
this one. At last.

So, guys, which way are you running?

I'm going that way.

Okay. Yep. You're doing it right now.

Impressive.

Good. I'm surprised the face is still
there.

That target didn't fare quite well. A
few things happened to it here. A few

things. Guys, 40 feet out, we have a
piece lodged right in this guy's head.

So at 40 feet, this is a kill. Because
if it breaks through the skull, you're

going to basically kill the person.
Because they're going to have a

in the brain and they're going to die.

Yeah, if that goes in your forearm, not
so big a deal. If it goes in your

skull... It's a kill.

That's a good day, though. Yeah.

As impressive as the Russian RGD -5 is,
the Americans believe they have a blast

that's even better.

I carried a bag of RGD -5s when I was in
the Gulf, so I've tested them

extensively.

There's no question that our bang is
bigger. The RGD -5 is just an

grenade that doesn't have the same
killing power as one of ours.

The Green Berets counter the Spetsnaz
grenade with their own explosive

The M67 fragmentation grenade.

Almost half a pound of high explosive
with a fatal blast radius of five yards.

We usually carry about four of these
with us at all times.

Let's get about a three to five second
fuse on this bad boy.

Okay. Whoa, whoa, whoa. About three to
five? Shouldn't you want to know that?

No. You know, they say three to five
second fuse.

I don't want to play with a three to
five second rule.

It may be a little longer, but who wants
to check it?

So let's head over to the test setup
here. And what we've done, we've got a

-degree angle wall setup, two Spetsnaz,
one hanging pig to mimic an enclosed

space. The enclosed space will allow
Jeff and Mac to measure the damage the

grenade blast will have inside a
building.

Let's have you guys clear out and end
up.

Right now.

All right. You ready?

I'm ready. Fire in the hole!

I'm not saying anything about that blown
out rear end. This derriere is missing

over here, you know. I think tactically
we understand why sitting on a grenade

is not a good way to absorb the shock.

You see, our frag's better than your
frag.

Well, it's kind of a relative term since
ours were consumed by the washing

machine. You know what I think will
settle this? Why don't we just go look

the high speed?

First up, the American's M67 grenade.

You see the mushroom cloud, huh? That
was our nuclear grenade.

You see?

Well, remember, most human problems can
be solved with the appropriate charge of

high explosives.

You gotta say it, Max.

I think ours has a bigger boom.

Next, they view the blast from the
Russian IGD -5.

Okay, guys, for us, it's not just about
the explosives.

It's about the frags, the way the
fragments are separated and do the

I think ours is more controlled radios
than yours.

Next thing you're going to say, it's got

Your grenade did its job. Your grenade
did its job.

But if I had to compare the numbers,
we've got a greater mass of high

For explosive weapons, the American M67
grenade blows the Russians away.

Mastering explosives like these requires
intense preparation, and Spetsnaz

training was notoriously rough.

Training was so intense that fatalities
were an accepted part of building a

better soldier.

No one really complained, and if you
did, no one listened.

The soldiers were beaten and forced to
swim in pools of blood in order to

toughen and make them immune to the
horrors of war.

Part of the training, learning how to
take punches. So, for example, if you

start punching me... Jeff,

a karate black belt, steps in to give
Maxime a bare -knuckle beatdown.

Dispatch has brutal training.

Impervious to pain.

Cold -blooded killing machines.

You don't feel that?

Well, sure, I do feel it. I know how to
absorb it.

If you do not push the limit, you don't
know where the limit is, right?

The Green Berets training was designed
to create self -reliant soldiers.

situation.

Think, think, think. Think outside the
box. You hear think outside the box

constantly.

Far more battles have been won by this
weapon than by a weapon like this.

The mind is the best weapon.

Spetsnaz soldiers see it a bit
differently.

We could take pain.

We could give pain.

I cannot say the same thing about these
guys.

They had people get offed and injured
seriously in training all the time.

That's just ridiculous. You're taking
that guy out of the fight. I prefer our

method. Coming up, when it comes to
close quarter combat. This is a horrible

to go. Each squad reveals a surprising
secret weapon.

American Green Berets.

The Soviet Spetsnaz.

It's a duel to the death between two
squads of special forces who have never

in battle before.

Green Berets are a little bit too soft.

They could train harder. They could live
a little bit harder.

That would be actually pretty friendly
advice to them.

You know what?

On the battlefield, we're proven.

I don't think it's even going to be that
much of a contest.

It may come down to which warrior
carries the best weapon in close combat.

Up first, the Green Beret's Entrenching
Tool, a sharpened shovel that could

slice skin and deliver devastating
damage.

All right, boys, time to learn about the
Entrenching Tool, commonly referred to

as the E -Tool.

Just as its name implies, it's for
digging holes or entrenching. It's also

widely used as a weapon.

Green Berets are trained to turn
anything into a weapon, and the E -Tool

easily accessible when the soldiers run
out of ammo.

The E -Tool is wielded like a battle axe
to instantly execute the enemy.

Well, I've got some tools of my own
here. We're going to measure the swing

of that shovel when it impacts our gel
torso.

So twist to the right, twist to the
left.

Looks good to me.

You ready, Matt?

Okay.

Three, two, one, go!

So, how dead is he, Doc?

Well, I mean, this is very impressive.

You can see he's basically chopped the
head in half, taken the brain out. This

is as bad as it could get.

Jaw, teeth.

Ear, no more.

He's got the intestines all coming out.
And you've basically lacerated through

the liver and the spleen.

If he didn't hit the head, this person
would basically watch his gut fill out

and then die.

Doesn't look much of a damage to me.
Looks like a little scratch, right? You

could run another half a mile to it.

Well, if you run, you'll only die tired.

The damage is deadly, but how fast did
the shovel strike?

Right about there, you reach about nine
miles per hour. Well, look what it does

to the head.

Oh, yeah, baby.

Look at those brains.

I have to admit, though, nine miles an
hour is not as fast as I would like to

see that thing going.

It's not like a sword. It's not made
ergonomically to swing with any

It's completely off balance.

It wasn't made for that. That's not a
combat weapon.

That's a toy.

I got four shots in four seconds.

I'm pretty sure he's dead.

Case closed.

Case may be closed for the Americans,
but the Spetsnaz have their own edged

blade. Comrades. To counter the
sharpened shovel. I present to you the

knife.

The ballistic knife.

Simple, stealthy, and full of surprises.

In combat.

The ballistic knife's blade can remain
attached to the handle, or it can be

fired as a projectile.

How does it fare as a distant weapon?

How lethal is this blade?

You have edged weapons flying through
the air at high velocities.

It is lethal.

We've got a speed trap or a chronometer
over here that we can measure that with.

Two beams of light, a known distance
between them, and from that, we get the

speed of the projectile of that weapon.

Very high tech.

Having one set of tactics is not going
to work. You've got to choose the right

tactic for the right mission.

The M4A1 carbine.

The primary weapon of choice for all U
.S. special forces.

It can kill a man from 2 ,000 feet.

So the Russians keep talking about the
right tool for the job. It's because

All right, well, this is the M4A1.

It has a four -position selector switch.

The four -position gives you safe,
single fire, burst fire, and full auto.

One arm shot, two arm shots, two chest
shots. I've got three holes up here in

the back and the shoulders.

This would have pretty much destroyed

Oh, man.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve,

thirteen, fourteen, twenty -one extra
wounds.

There is no such thing as overkill.

Despite the devastation, the Spetsnaz
are on move.

They believe they have the better gun
for this firefight.

The AK -74, reliable, deadly, and the
primary weapon of choice for Russia's

special forces.

It's based on the original AK -47, which
was developed after World War II.

Clear fire!

Weapons clear.

Let's go take a look.

You shot him in the back.

Oh,

man, we got rules, dude.

Come on, you can't shoot him in the ding
-ding.

Check that one out.

Yeah, it's definitely the ear shot.

So in through the side of the ear like
that, out the back of the head.

Oh, yeah, right there. Yeah, that's
instant kill shot right there.

Both special forces have eliminated all
of their enemies.

So neither weapon gets the edge.

To break the tie, each team is armed
with another long -range rifle. And with

these guns, accuracy is everything.

If they miss their first shot, I won't.
Sniper rifles, here we come.

Soviet Draganov, a semi -automatic
sniper rifle that can fire standard

and armor -piercing ammunition.

It can blow a hole between the eyes of
an enemy at three quarters of a mile.

Maxime will get five bullets to show off
his sharpshooting skills.

Two!

Go!

Oh, nice.

All of my targets, I was just aiming for
the nose.

Looks like he's just got a bad runny
nose, but once you get close, you

he took some lead in the mustache area,
and that's no way to die.

That guy went in the eye.

Yikes. I was taking it over here, but,
you know, it went over here.

That guy just a little bit went to the
left, but I just hit him.

Matt came hit with all five of his
bullets, but his aim was up to an inch

The M24, a bolt -action system that's
the standard sniper rifle of the U .S.

Army.

In the hands of an experienced operator,
the M24 can drop a man at 2 ,700

feet.

Matt will blast his bullets at the

This is demented.

Told you the far one was better. Three
targets right between the eyes.

So who do our experts think took this
route?

Based on the test results only, I'm
going to go with the M24 because of the

deadpan center.

While the Draganov hit its mark, it was
one inch to the right. One inch on a

three -inch target is just too much for
me.

The edge in long -range sniper rifles
goes to the Green Berets M24.

confrontation, we've tested some of the

most lethal killing tools in history.

The Makarov. A semi -automatic pistol,
easily concealable for silent special

ops. I submit to you, we can probably

We've seen the Beretta. We're going to

actually two shots here, right here

collarbone. Hit the subclavian artery,
subclavian vein, pneumothorax. This is a

kill shot.

Interestingly enough, you got a shot
almost exactly the same place under the

collarbone. There's going to be bleeding
inside the chest.

That's flesh when he can walk it off.

This is an interesting one. Right in the
beard area, the little goatee.

It's going straight through your neck.
This is going to make you paralyzed.

It's the edge in short -range weapons.

Well, Max, if you're at a static target,
Green Berets did very, very well. But

like the Eastern philosophy always says,
you've got to keep moving, you've got

to keep dynamic.

And they can hit their targets while
they're moving, and we haven't seen that

with the Berets yet.

It's that whole idea of a weapon system,
right? And where does a weapon system

begin? And with Spetsnaz, it's
definitely here and here that it begins.
