created a high -tech fight club with

scientists,

Martial arts experts and lots and lots
of weapons.

It's all here to create a virtual battle
between two legendary warriors.

A ninja, history's most famous hitman,
versus a

Spartan, an armored killing machine.

To find out just how deadly ninja and
Spartans really are, we'll test their

weapons and fighting techniques on high
-tech dummies, stand -ins for human

victims.

Scientist and karate black belt Jeff
Damoline wires these dummies to

that collect the injury data.

For example, this dummy has three linear
accelerometers inside the head, and

from the numbers that we received based
on the impact...

We can tell whether this person would
have died or not.

Enter Max Geiger, a 21 -year -old
computer whiz.

He'll take the data from our weapons
test and enter it into a battle

program.

I'm inputting 20 different factors,
which are going to determine things like

attack power, defense strength, range,
accuracy.

Based on this data, the simulator will
stage a true -to -life fight to the

death.

The winner will be the deadliest
warrior.

These two warriors never met in history,
but today they will inside this

computer.

Weapons specialist Jeremy Dunn and
former Green Beret Barry Jacobson will

demonstrate the Spartan Way War.

Spartans weren't otters. They weren't
artists. They did nothing but fight.

Thomas Spartan Boy was eight years old.
He was trained to do one thing.

That killed the enemy.

Spartans were the most feared fighters
of their time. But one battle made them

legends.

In Thermopylae Pass, 300 Spartans faced
off against an army of half a million

Persians.

Thermopylae was a rearguard action.
Think of it as the Greek Alamo.

These men knew they were going to die.

But a Spartan will never die without a
fight.

In the three days of Thermopylae, the
Spartans likely killed 100 ,000 to 200

,000 Persians.

Spartans were the toughest warriors
history has ever produced.

Our Spartan experts are confident.

But so are the team that will
demonstrate the weapons and techniques

ninjas.

Luke Klein is a master at ninjutsu, the
secret art of the ninja.

Karate instructor Michael Lair is a
black belt level at four different

arts.

So to truly understand the strength of
the ninja, you had to see how they

evolved.

They didn't start out as warriors. They
started out as farmers, villagers,

peasants, the lowest of the low.

Like most people, they thought
independent.

But at the time, Japan was ruled by
feudal warlords and the military class

samurai.

Very tough, very well -trained fighters.

In a fair fight, the farmers and
villagers really didn't stand much of a

So when they had to fight, they just
didn't fight fair.

The ninja's strength flows from his
agility, his mobility, his incredible

thought process that allows him to do
what other people never expect.

Distract you, look over here, take out

Distract you up here, powder to your

So how would history's most legendary
killer fare against the fight some

consider history's most perfect warrior?

I'm giving the edge to the ninja.

Spartan's not going to be as used to
fighting by himself as a ninja would be.

And so as long as the ninja can get by
the spear, I give the advantage to the

ninja.

The spear is a Spartan's primary weapon.
Eight feet of iron -tipped retaliation.

This is a deadly weapon. It pierces
armor. It pierces body parts.

It leaves a deadly puncture wound. It
also can be used with the edge as a

-sharp cutting tool as well.

To measure the striking force of the
spear, our team attach high -tech fences

wrist, spear, and our ninja standing.

Take him down.

This red line is the acceleration of the
spear, and when it shows

it, it is equivalent to falling two
stories.

So if we held the spear static on the
ground and somebody fell on it, falling

from two stories, that's what you're
inflicting.

As a Los Angeles ER doctor and one of
the first medics for ultimate fighting,

Dr. Armand Dorian has seen a world of
hurt.

He'll examine just what the Spartan
spear will do to the human body.

We can't use these weapons on actual
human beings, so our next best bet is

ballistic gel.

The ballistics gel is going to give us
the same consistency that you would find

in human tissue. We should get the same
type of resistance as the sphere goes

through to actually see what type of
damage it would do.

I'm now going to step away from the mic.

There's a definite fatal blow. You have
a severe laceration. It hit the ribs,

fractured the ribs through the lung,
broke through the heart, and you have an

exit wound here.

This guy's dead. Beautiful.

Ninja!

Where's the ninja at?

And that's one strike.

That's the energy from the spear. It's
moving the actual body backwards.

Jeez.

Well, the end story there.

That's for sure.

It's still sinking in. It's still
sinking in. Yeah, it's still sinking in.

I can't argue with that, man.

This program was developed by Slytherin
Studios over in the UK, and it's taken

them five years to build it. Based on
what I've seen so far, the Spartans are

lot stronger than I had expected.

When that spear hits the ninja, it's
going to go right through him.

All we have to do is get within six feet
of you.

You have no armor.

Our spear, as we showed...

We'll just go through you like... You
mean that big flow thing that you can

Spartan Spear is just like any spear.
It's long, it's pointy at one end, and

has a guy behind it. It's got no chance
against the ninja.

Ninja's way too fast.

I was giving the edge to the ninja at
first, but I'm starting to second -guess

myself now.

The major feeling I think that ninja has
is to get close, he has to get within

the lethal range of the Spartan Spear. I
think that's going to be his weakness.

So I'm not going to lie, the Spartan's
pretty effective. He's got some nice

moves. The ninja definitely has some
tricks up his sleeves for the Spartan.

Things he'll never see coming.

Spartan.

In Southern California, we've gathered a
world -class team of doctors,

scientists, and martial artists.

They're all here to answer a classic
locker room question.

If a Spartan fought a ninja, who would
win?

When these two face off, they'll each
bring their own arsenal of deadly

Fubukari? Oh, yeah.

Shuriken? Yep.

Two comma or one?

Two. Two.

The ninja mastered a multitude of
weapons, because if he couldn't hit you

one, he'd hit you with another.

Ah, ninjuto.

If I can't hit you high, I'll hit you
low. If the low doesn't work, I'll come

back high.

In battle, ninjas used anything and
everything to give them an advantage.

Spartans use just four weapons.

The Spartan has warfare boiled down to a
very simple, very deadly method.

He uses a javelin at long range.

In close, he has a spear.

He has a deadly sharp hacking weapon
called a xyphos, a short sword.

And a shield itself is a weapon.

Four weapons is much more effective than
ten weapons you have to worry about and

think about.

Spartans are deadly, but predictable.

They're also very, very hard to kill.

The Spartan is a wall of bronze.

He's got armor from head to his toe. The
only target the ninja has are the eye

slots. Other than that, there really is
no target for the ninja.

So the Spartan has a very pretty set of
armor, but of course the ninja were

already accustomed to fighting armored
enemies.

I mean, after all, they fought the
samurai, and samurai had steel plates in

their armor, much stronger than bronze.

But the ninja had weapons that were used
against points that weren't armed at

all. Weak points, like the eyes.

One of the ninja's best weapons against
armor is something a Spartan would never

expect to see on a battle.

Hollowed out eggs filled with crushed
glass.

Using everyday ingredients, the ninja
created the perfect recipe for blinding

enemy. The simple, yet most effective
tool.

Crushing a hand, throwing it to samurai,
they had no chance.

The use of black eggs began rumors that
ninjas could disappear in a cloud of

dust.

To test their effectiveness in battle,
our scientists set up a high -speed

camera and a Spartan victim.

We're going to track the black egg and
see just how much glass gets into the

Spartan's eyes.

Let's get him suited up. Okay.

Yeah.

Spartan helmet is no defense against the
ninja's crushed glass.

Whoa, that is full coverage on both
eyes.

Whoa.

It's going to be brutal. It's definitely
going to affect him in the simulation.

I mean, the ninja's going to win the
battle hands down. You know, it's just a

matter of time.

A Spartan was used to pain. He spent his
entire life in pain and discomfort.

His whole training was oriented to make
him hard, to make him inured to pain.

Glass in his eyes, sure, it inflicts
some pain, but it won't stop him.

Spartans trained the way they fought.

Brutal.

And with full contact.

Meeting force head on.

A Spartan was a soldier and nothing
else. He spent his entire life training

be a warrior.

For a ninja, training was much more
holistic.

It wasn't about just running out there
and hitting things as hard as you can.

was about precision.

The ninjas worked on perfecting
technique so that every strike would be

accurate as possible.

But instead of meeting force with force,
it was deflected.

For a ninja, training consisted not just
of physical force, but also mind over

They have some tricks up their sleeve,

Well, the Spartans were fantastic
warriors in their own time.

But to a ninja, something like a
Spartan?

Just a big piece of meat.

To a Spartan, a ninja would be nothing
but vermin. He'd be a peasant, armed

weapons he doesn't deserve to carry,
fighting better men than himself.

Scurry around in dark places like a
cockroach.

So far, we've tested the Spartan spear
and the ninja's black eggs.

And to be frank, those black eggs are a
really powerful weapon. When they hit

home, they do some major damage.

However, in comparison to the Spartan
spear, they're nothing.

That thing is a killing blow every time
it hits.

100 % lethal.

So as it is right now, I would have to
give it to the Spartan.

Spartan has the edge in mid -range
weapons.

For close -up action, the ninja
unsheathes a sword with legendary

Spartan versus ninja.

would win a no -holds -barred battle to
the death.

Every suit of armor has a weak point.

That's what the ninja would exploit.

I don't care how well -trained the ninja
is, he's never taken the blows that a

Spartan has from the time he was eight
years old.

In ancient Greece, Spartans fought their
way into history.

In Japan, ninjas slipped quietly into
legend, taking on highly trained armored

samurai and winning.

Ninjas developed a weapon for every
situation.

They're all reliable. It's a sword that
combines devastating cutting power with

amazing speed.

It's a variation of the actual samurai
katana called a ninjutsu.

A ninjutsu.

Three feet of razor -sharp steel.

Perfect for slashing and stabbing.

One of the secrets is the scabbard is
long.

But the blade inside is just a little
shorter, which makes it a lot faster on

the draw.

Fast, deadly, and 2 ,000 years more
advanced than a Spartan's Bronze Age

This is tempered steel, okay? So you
think it's going to make it through the

shield? I think it'll make it through
his helmet.

The team uses a skeleton encased in
ballistics gel to mimic the resistance

human flesh and bone.

As a former paramedic, Jeff Damoline
knows what it takes to kill a man.

Spartans. That's probably equivalent to
you going through a 2x4 with that sword.

Wow. Look how amazing that was.

Unfortunately for the ninja, the Spartan
isn't wearing wooden armor.

The armor of Spartan is like a battle
tank. He closes quickly.

He puts a shield into his enemy.

He puts a sword into his gut.

Spartan's short sword is only 20 inches
long, but it shaped the maximum killing

power.

A deadly sharp sword, very, very heavy
towards the cutting part.

That's what we call the sweet of the
sword.

This can actually hack off a man's limbs
with one good slap.

Barry honed his sword skills during his
eight years as a Green Beret.

This part cuts the throat. It flashes
inside the thigh of the femoral artery.

stabs to the guts.

It keeps close and personal.

I think the ninjas are going to have a
tough time with this.

Again, all the power comes from down low
from my hips, driving the sword into

him. All that power.

Get out!

How deep do you think this went?

Let's find out. I mean, this is pretty
gnarly looking right here.

Now, you see there from the residue of
the gel, we're talking six, seven

That's ridiculous.

Dude, I'm sorry. You're double bad.

But the damage should have been even
more severe.

You see here that I actually hit the
steel column that is the spinal column

this dummy and bent the tip of the
sword.

That's how hard we hit it. Of course, if
the spinal column had been made of a

real human tissue, it would have severed
it.

Barry's collision with the steel spine
and our gel torso prevents a high -tech

comparison of the two swords.

So the team sets up a different test.

They obtain the closest substitute, the
human flesh.

A pig has the same flesh type, same
types of bones, vessels as a human body.

The short sword was proven to be a
lethal weapon, but not as deadly as the

ninjato.

I can feel it actually crunching through
the bones. You can see it bend just a

little bit.

There's a strain on the blade. Did you
see it rotate like that? Any other blade

would have snapped for sure.

Yeah, it goes through the pelvis,
through the spine.

That's right around the area where the
Spartan doesn't have any armor either.

if you hit the Spartan like this, we
would see a similar injury.

Is that an insta -kill?

Yes. The spinal cord is cut. The major
artery is cut.

Exsanguination, 30 seconds, dead.

How would you program this in the model?

I can't even begin to imagine.

There are going to be a lot of
parameters that I have to tweak. I mean,

wound is so big, we don't even have to
worry about bleed out.

Right now, I'm giving the edge to the
ninja.

I think the ninja will win.

The ninja's weaponry has just made it to
a higher standard.

We're seeing steel age technology
against bronze age technology.

And I think we see why steel is
superior.

Ninjato gives the ninja the edge at
close range offense.

But our Spartan experts aren't fazed.

They have yet to reveal the weapon that
made Sparta a superpower for more than

500 years.

The Spartan has this one advantage the
ninja cannot counter.

The shield.

A non -stop ninja assault versus the
ultimate defense to decide who is

When it comes to combat, Spartans and
ninjas are opposites.

A Spartan never retreats.

He lives to feel the blood of his enemy.

A true warrior stands toe -to -toe,
shield to shield in the battle line, his

sword, his spear, his shield.

That's all man fights.

But a ninja prefers the element of
surprise.

So a ninja has no armor, no ways of
protecting himself if he gets hit. And

that's a big if, because a ninja's not
going to get hit. A ninja's much faster,

much more agile, and has a better array
of equipment at his disposal.

One of the ninja's simplest and most
effective weapons.

It's the blowgun.

Made from bamboo, it fires small dots
that pack a huge punch.

What do you think?

Arm shot, arm shot, lower torso, neck
area.

Everywhere the Spartan doesn't have
armor.

Exactly. No armor.

These may look small and flimsy.

But the tip is drenched with a severely
toxic chemical known as tetrodotoxin. It

comes from the pufferfish or blowfish.

And a small amount basically can kill
somebody in a minute.

With a concentrated poison on the tip,
they hit you, you die, game over.

The ninja's most famous distance weapon
was the shuriken, a ring

of razor -sharp steel that always hits.

Point first.

Gentlemen, let me introduce to you one
of the most lethal weapons,

the shuriken or ninja star. When you
throw the shuriken, you throw it in this

technique right here. You throw it as
fast and as hard as you can.

Yeah, this actually kind of looks like
four scalpels. That's right, Doc. Four

scalpels flying at your face, flying at
your eye socket, flying at your neck,

and flying at your sternum.

I can pour those into your chest. What
do you think they're going to do to you?

I'm still questioning the lethality of
these shurikens, but even a distracting

tool has to be fast and it has to be on
its mark.

So I brought the speed gun and we have a
target for you to practice on.

47 miles an hour.

48 miles an hour.

Stuck it right in the bone. Yeah. Here
you would definitely break some ribs,

perhaps puncturing the lungs. You would
get the liver and cause some significant

bleeding. If you hit somebody like this,
they would die from it.

Throwing stars and poison dots are
lethal when they hit their mark.

What if there's no mark to hit?

From his shins all the way to the top of
his head, the Spartan is cased in solid

bronze armor.

I just don't see this as being lethal.
It's a very sweet weapon if you're

throwing against a naked savage.

But against an armored, bronze -clad
warrior, I still think you're in deep

jeopardy.

Though their armor supports close
combat, the Spartans have a distant

their own.

The Spartan javelin was designed to be
thrown at armies, not individuals.

This is not like the javelins you see in
Olympic Games, for instance.

It's almost like a dart, only three and
a half feet long.

And of course, in the hands of an
expert, these things can be really

Right into the diaphragm, we're looking
at major damage there.

This is about the pancreas of the body.
How far did it go in there, Barry? It

went all the way up to the wire, which
is about 2 1⁄2 to 3 inches.

What we just saw looked impressive, but
the actual damage is not as significant

as you would think.

The javelin would need to have a perfect
strike to cause significant damage.

But the long -range results in.

The Spartan javelin isn't as lethal as
the ninja blowgun.

The ninja has a definite edge at long
range.

None of the ninja's weapons will do
anything if they can't get past the

shield. The Spartan, going into battle
against the ninja, has this one

the ninja cannot counter.

Anything he throws, be it shuriken,
blowgun, is deflected off of the shield.

Almost four feet across.

Made of wood covered in bronze, this
shield helped Spartans become legends.

The most important part of a Spartan's
military equipment was his shield. When

the Spartans fought the Persians in
Thermopylae, the Spartan's shield

any weapon the Persian had, whereas the
Spartan's spear would clear through the

wicker shields of the Persians.

The shield provides a solid defense and
an almost unstoppable offense.

You step in with a thrust.

As you step in, you close with your
opponent, cocking your shield back for a

devastating strike to the cheek of your
opponent.

You could hit him with the flat of the
shield and knock him on his pants.

You could take the edge of the shield
and you could break his bones.

It's a steamroller. It just pushes
through the enemy.

To accurately measure the shield's
force, our team wires up a high -impact

dummy.

Jeremy, take a look at this. We haven't
seen these numbers yet.

This is over 45 Gs you inflicted on that
dummy's head.

I've tested trauma for automobile
accident, IED explosion, punches to the

and this is the highest acceleration
I've seen in a dummy so far.

What did we get? Field shock here.

Oh.

Looks like you bent your shield.

I just grazed it, too.

So we're talking depressed skull
fracture, instant unconsciousness, brain

laceration. How does that compare to the
spear?

I'd say this is much more deadly than
the spear was.

Generating 45 Gs is way beyond what you
actually need to penetrate the skull and

cause death.

So being hit by something like that
shield is basically a death blow.

The Spartan shield is an overwhelming
weapon.

But the ninja team isn't worried.

What about that?

Has to have the Kusarigama. I love it.

Coming up, the ninjas unleash a savage
weapon that slices, dices, and smashes.

In a showdown between a ninja and
Spartan,

The battle boils down to one simple
question.

Can the ninja get past the Spartan's
shield and find a weak point in his

You have to remember, the Spartan is an
armored warrior, unlike anything the

ninja's ever seen before.

His head is encased in a bronze helmet.
His body armor is made of the same

thing. It's solid bronze.

No slash, no cutting technique is going
to penetrate that armor.

It'll glance off, it'll scratch it, but
it won't penetrate it. Our Spartan

experts are confident.

But the ninja had a secret weapon that
was designed to kill armored samurai.

Kusarikama is two weapons in one.

A razor -sharp scythe combined with a
fallen chain on the end.

This big sickle part right here is
something that farmers use to cut wheat,

grain, that sort of thing. Very useful
for hooking, trapping limbs. You can

catch somebody's weapon, strip it out of
them, catch them by the neck.

Send right here, free -hanging weight.

Use that to get up some nice momentum.
You get this sucker wrapped around your

limbs, spins closer and closer to the
center, so the force takes care of the

rest.

The side end is going to be on the left.

Okay, breaking the two lower ribs right
there.

Look at that sharp wave.

It gouges at least two to three inches
inside.

You actually punch it in the lungs as
well, for sure. Absolutely.

If you actually pierce, what you're
going to do then is rip it out.

Take everything that it's attached to
straight out of the body.

Kusarigama, fast and lethal.

But our Spartan experts aren't worried.

This is the acid test.

You can't cut through this.

You can't get to the soft, squishy parts
underneath.

And my guess is you're not going to be
able to do that. This is 12 -gauge solid

bronze. You can't cut through the bronze
armor, and all the wounds you deliver

will just be nicks.

Good luck, laddie.

You're going to need it.

This is going to determine a lot of
armor penetration for the simulation.

I mean, there's been a lot of talk about
this as being your big weapon against

the Spartan.

Combs?

Oh, nice face.

Thank you.

You're in the moment.

I don't want that coming at me. Oh, wow.

Oh!

It's denting for sure, but... Of course,
where does the blade go next?

It goes right up next to the neck.

From there, exactly where the blade's
curving around right now, you go for the

back of the neck, go for the side of the
neck, hook in there, drag. And that's

the one place he doesn't have armor.

Absolutely. Michael Laird tries hard to
put a positive spin on it.

He's not armored everywhere, is he?

Take out one arm.

Take out the other arm.

Drops his shield, drops his spear.

Of course, the only thing he wants to do
is take out the rest of it.

Just what a ninja wants.

The ninja a -selling.

Nobody's buying.

I think it was both, and I don't think
the Spartan would be very bothered by an

impact like that. So right now, I'm
giving the edge to the Spartan.

But to fully understand the Kusarigama,
we need to test both ends.

Well, there's a huge dent there. Only

way to tell for sure.

Looks like a little miniature car crash
going on inside there. Yeah, exactly.

You feel the heads rotating like that?
Yeah, look at that.

You're getting direct contact
compressing the spine, which could

a chance of paralysis.

And the head rotation itself due to the
ball could be a kill shot as well.

Hey, guys.

Difficult to get past this one, I tell
you.

Wraps around the helmet, strikes the
top, breaks the crest.

Guys, you like putting that thing on
yet?

Turns the head.

Very impressive.

Now, you're going to stun the Spartan
perhaps for a second or two, but no

than a sword blow to the side of the
head or a spear blow or a shield blow

he's used to taking every day in combat.

I didn't disagree.

I think the leather padding inside
wouldn't absorb the energy. I think it

just translate the energy from the
helmet to the neck.

That's why I'm suspecting a neck injury
in this case. I mean, if we're sitting

our head out like that, we're going to
be whacked. But we're going to be moving

around, and it's not going to connect
that way. That's what he counted on.

That's why he hit the back.

That's why he didn't go straight through
your shield. We're going to see that

thing come in. It's going to whack that
shield and just skip right over maybe,

you know. So you're telling me your eyes
are tracking a small beam pole about

that big that's black whipping in the
air? We'll be watching your shoulder.

Brother, we got full extension beyond
your spear. Yeah, okay. Way beyond your

spear. This is a good blow, but hey, it
can happen that way in a real battle.

Even if it doesn't, we're not a single
track mind. We're not just standing

whipping it around.

We're setting you up. We're playing
chess on you. You think you know what

doing. You have no clue. Just when you
think you're fighting your fight, you're

actually fighting ours.

Our experts remain convinced that their
fighter will win.

And our testers are now divided.

I think it's going to be the Spartan.
That shield is just so massive, I can't

imagine the ninja getting around it. Up
until we saw the Kusurigama, I thought

the Spartan had the advantage, but the
Kusurigama provides for blunt trauma

that's devastating, and it also provides
for some distance.

Our experts can't agree, but the numbers
don't lie.

The shield gives the Spartan the edge in
special weapons.

After three days of non -stop testing,
Max Geiger will take the results and

them into the computer.

the final test on the Spartan and the

Ninja. Now, they're about to find out
who is... The deadliest warrior.

The team tested four sparking weapons.

The javelin, spear, sword, and shield.

They tested the ninja shuriken,
kusarigama, ninjato, blowgun, and black

Out of the three different long bits and
weapons, none were very effective.

The javelin isn't all that accurate.
It's not going to stop anybody in their

tracks. Same thing for the ninja stars.

The blowgun, on the other hand, one hit,
one kill.

Edge, Ninja.

The medium range.

Our team tested two very different
weapons.

The black eggs are definitely going to
hit, and they're definitely going to do

some damage.

Ninja's going to be able to wear the
Spartan down a little bit. But the spear

absolutely lethal. When it does catch
him, it's an absolute killer.

Edge, Spartan.

For close range, we tested two razor
-sharp swords.

When it comes to the sword, there's no
comparison.

The Ninjuto, it's longer, it's lighter,
it's faster, it's stronger.

Ninja has the advantage.

Edge Ninja.

Our experts had two choices for special
weapons.

The Kasurigama is a devastating weapon.

But the shield is both a defensive and
offensive weapon.

So at the end of the day, I think I'm
going to have to give it to the Spartan.

Edge Spartan.

Max now loads the results into a state
-of -the -art computer program that will

determine the winner.

These numbers are going to tell us that
when a spear punches through somebody's

ribcage, how hard are those bones going
to crack and how badly is that guy going

to bleed?

Prevent the fight being won by a single
lucky blow.

Max will simulate the battle 1 ,000
times.

It will be a battle of opposites.

Speed against strength.

Steel versus bronze.

Direct versus deviant.

I've got about all the numbers that I
can handle at this point.

When I ran the battle a thousand times,
I saw that the Spartan won 65 % of the

time. The determining factor in this
fight was the Spartan's shield.

The ninja was able to win about 35 % of
the time. He definitely left the Spartan

bloodied and incapacitated, but he just
wasn't able to win.

I'm surprised that the Spartan actually
won such a high percentage.

It seems to actually boil down to the
fact that the ninja can hurt the

but the Spartan can kill the ninja.

You know, I'm disappointed, but if a
ninja saw a Spartan in real life, he

just run away. He'd come back and kill
him in his sleep.

The ninja had some surprises.

He certainly had some skills, some great
moves.

I think the ninja would have done well
against almost any warrior in history,

except the Spartans.
