Then, we've turned them loose with the
world's most lethal weapon.

All to create a battle between two
legendary warriors.

The Apache.

One of history's greatest stealth
fighters and the forerunner of today's

forces versus a gladiator, an invincible
death machine who thrilled

bloodthirsty spectators in ancient Rome.

ER doctor and ultimate fighting
physician Armand Dorian will analyze the

potential of the weapons.

Instant death. I'm going to tell you if
they're going to die or not. I'm going

to tell you if their heart's going to be
beating. I'm going to tell you if

they're going to bleed out.

Biomedical engineer and karate black
belt Jeff Damelin will use high -tech

sensors to collect the stats.

I take real numbers from scientific
tools and relate that to the amount of

injury or amount of damage that a weapon
would inflict on an opponent.

Test findings will be tracked by
computer whiz Max Geiger.

He'll input the results into a battle
simulation program.

This is the digital equivalent of good
old -fashioned mayhem. The weapon data

that we're gathering represent blood
pumping through arteries, stabs, lashes,

cuts, all kinds of horrible grisly
things. The simulator will take these

and create a blow -by -blow death match
between the fight.

The winner will be the deadliest
warrior.

Gladiator weapons will be wielded by
Chris Torres, a mixed martial artist who

specializes in Roman warfare.

The gladiator lived for only one thing,
and that is to kill.

Gladiator expert Steve Dietrich has
worked as a weapons historian for

Hollywood films, one of the world's
leading instructors in gladiator combat.

Gladiators are as tough as they come
because they don't have the option to

They're criminals, they're murderers,
they're robbers, they're slaves. They

the biggest, the meanest, the strongest,
the most durable.

Those are the fodder from which they
hone and create a gladiator.

There were two ways out for a gladiator.
The gate of death, the gate of life.

You went out the gate of death dragged
out as a loser.

He walks through the gate of life as a
winner, bloodied, scarred, unbeatable.

The Apache has never seen this machine
that just has nothing else on his mind

but to win, to kill, to destroy, to
bleed.

That's why the Apache is going to go
down.

is a veteran combat instructor with five
black belts in martial arts.

He teaches Apache fighting tactics to
the U .S. military.

We don't care. The Apaches did not care
what looked pretty. This looked pretty

for an Apache.

Throughout the Southwest, the Apaches
were feared as cunning and ruthless

fighters. Apaches were the first
guerrilla warfare fighters known to

history.

They would wait to the last possible
minute within a few feet of the enemy,

at the exact same time in unison, all
the Apaches would do their war scream.

Apaches took pride in outsmarting their
enemies.

They knew the psychology of combat. They
knew how to use fear to their

advantage.

Their opponents would start getting
confused, scared.

The Apaches just took them apart piece
by piece, and sometimes they really did

enjoy it.

So how would this fierce, stealthy
commando fare against the Gladiator,

sole purpose was to fight to the death?

Right now I have to give the edge to the
Gladiator, solely based on the fact

that he's wearing armor, and the Apache
isn't.

My money's on the Apache.

The Gladiator isn't armored in the right
ways to defend himself from the deadly

weapons that the Apache carries.

The Apache's most famous weapon was
simple and deadly.

The tomahawk, a sharp blade fixed across
a short handle that could crack heads

and slice through flesh.

To test the traditional stone blade, our
team readied the first target, a

synthetic skull with the same density as
human bone.

I'm going to mount this to your arm.

Jeff wires sensors to both weapon and
warrior to measure the striking force.

A high -speed camera will help analyze
the impact.

Are you ready, Snake?

Ready. Okay, three, two, one, go!

Ten years of emergency medicine is not
needed to tell you what happens here.

If you see brain matter, you basically
die.

Bye -bye, gladiator.

Bye -bye.

How the freak was that, guys? It was
pretty impressive.

When he comes in, he gets... Whoa!

Nice. Pop goes the skull.

Man, where's those gladiators, man? Are
they looking at this? You see yourself,

To drive home his point, Snakeblocker
takes aim with a tomahawk made from the

jawbone of a horse.

At close range, the tomahawk is more
than lethal.

But how does it fare as a distance
weapon?

This is the tomahawk that my forefathers
used.

This is a modern -day tomahawk that's
used by the modern -day forces.

Still very effective, and it's still
here today, just like the Apache.

32 miles per hour.

Woo! Three tomahawks, three hits.

49 miles per hour on that one.

All right. Injogo.

Injogo. Alan's speed and precision with
a tomahawk is a tough act to beat.

Long -range weapon.

We'll get your Roman gladiator coming
in, fight over.

That's it. He shot it pretty deep inside
that wood. A lot thicker than human

tissue. The numbers don't look good for
the gladiator.

So at a distance of about 9 feet, you
know, he's going to see it, but he's not

going to have time to react, whereas at
about 22 feet, he'll be able to dodge

it. And that's if he can see it coming
with that helmet on.

Don't even get me started on that
helmet, man. That thing is going to be a

trap. Who would throw away their weapon
anyway?

I mean, that's a great Hollywood
invention, throw away your weapon. I

glad you're accurate with that weapon,
because as soon as you throw it, that

weapon is worthless. You might as well
throw it away. It's not doing any good.

And Apache will not throw all his
tomahawks. He's saving his last tomahawk

take your head off.

The gladiators answer the tough talk
with a close combat weapon that launched

modern -day prize fights.

Inside our L .A.-based weapons lab, two
teams of legendary warriors are

preparing for a bone -crushing battle.

The question, if an Apache fought a
gladiator, who would win?

Gladiators are going to destroy Apaches
because that's all that they train for.

A gladiator did only one thing, and that
was kill and survive.

The Apache doesn't need a fight for
show. If an Apache has an enemy to kill,

will kill that enemy.

Each side brings a deadly arsenal of
weapons.

Apache weapons, as simple, timeless,
effective.

To an Apache, anything is a weapon.

Whatever it takes to take his enemy's
life is what he's going to use.

But the gladiator's weapons were
especially designed to kill and maim.

They utilized superior weapons.

Their weapons were made for combat.

The Apaches have the tomahawk. They want
to come in close and get dirty.

This is how Romans get dirty. They're
going to take some of this, the kestis,

right in the face. Bam!

The kestis, developed more than 2 ,000
years ago.

It's the world's first boxing glove.

complete with iron spikes.

This would shred your flesh.

It would punch through the skin and hit
bone.

This is how damage got done the Roman
way.

Since ancient Roman death boxes are in
short supply, the team turns to a modern

-day gladiator known for his toughness
and punching power.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion,
Chuck Liddell.

Welcome to the laboratory, man.

It's pretty thick.

How you guys doing?

Nice haircut.

For a fighter like Chuck, the
gladiator's gear is a playground of

possibilities.

That's sort of our secret weapon against
the Apache Tomahawk.

It was used by a gladiator called a
scissore or scissor. You can imagine the

meaning of that when you unsheathe it
and see what kind of damage you can do

with it.

18 inches of steel designed to block and
flight in a single motion.

Those are sort of the evolution of the
boxing glove. The Romans started with a

wrapping around the wrist and then he
balls into...

Something that was just kind of a
shredding tool.

In order to shred, I didn't break bones.

Right.

Before Jeff Damerlin can find out what
Chuck can do with the characters, he

needs to know how lethal Chuck is
without it.

This thing here is a three -dimensional
accelerometer. So when you punch, wham,

that's what we're going to see. And I
can use those numbers to determine the

lethality of that punch.

Cool. That's sick.

First, Jeff measures the speed of
Chuck's punch.

Two, one.

Go!

Yeah!

Take a look at this, man. You're off the
charts.

I got 14 meters per second. The average
Olympic boxer was 9 meters per second.

You're almost 1 .5 times that number.

Cool, cool.

So now what we're going to do, Chuck,
we're going to get your punch force.

3, 2, 1, go!

Yeah! Nice one, man. You want to try a
hook? Go!

Yeah!

You know what? I think that one's going
to give us our best reading.

Chuck's reputation as a power puncher
was one in the octagon.

Now, he has scientific proof to back it
up.

According to the numbers, if you punch
him in the nose, the cheek, the jaw, the

neck, they're all going to bust.

It's over 1 ,000 pounds of force coming
down on somebody's face.

I mean, these numbers are real and
amazing to me. The characters will

concentrate Chuck's force onto the tips
of razor -sharp iron spikes.

I'd love to bring one of these into the
archipelago.

That'd give me a think advantage when
I'm throwing my jab.

This would make a whole other level of
being scared.

On your call, on your call. Three, two,
one, go!

Yeah!

Whoa, look at that, man.

So comparing this to a flat -fisted
punch.

That ranged anywhere between 100 and 120
PSI. Those Kestis jumped it up to over

331 PSI. That's going to hurt.

Absolutely, that's going to hurt.

The Kestis cripples Chuck's punching
power, but it will take a heavyweight

opponent to really show what the Kestis
can do.

Okay, guys, this is 400 pounds of real
beef. You punch this.

It's just like punching a human body.
You've got the ribs, you've got the

muscle, you've got the soft tissue.

You break a rib, you break a human's
rib. Let's see what you're going to do

with this.

Three, two, one, go!

Yeah! Go, go, go!

Wow. Without even feeling, I can tell
you, just by appearance,

Broken ribs. You've cut this cow almost
in half with your fifth.

Like those?

Feel good, huh?

We got something else for that. Don't
worry.

This is a scary one.

Three, two, one.

It goes through like butter.

I don't even feel it. Hold down the
scissors. Doctor coming in.

Oh, okay. I mean, there's nothing more
to say than the fact that I can see you

from inside this cow.

One shot, dead.

And now Chuck.

Kestis or scissor? I'll take the one
punch killer.

The damage is severe, but the Apache is
on fire.

Hey, cows don't move, you know. When you
got something going at this speed,

going in with knives, going in with
axes, and going in with that cage,

I don't need to talk. Look, look. You
can think you're invincible all you

but once an arrow pierces your heart,
you're gone. And you're not even going

have a chance to use that.

Hey, if you got knives and you're doing
all this stuff, and I just, I'll hit you

straight down the middle. I don't have
to hit you. I don't have to hit you in

the body. I'll hit you in the arm. Ow.

All right, guys, remember, it's the
tests that are going to make the

here, and obviously you can see the
results with this test. This definitely

very, very deadly weapon.

But is the Roman scissor a deadlier
weapon than the tomahawk?

The scissor is absolutely devastating,
but it's a one -shot, one -kill thing. I

have yet to see any weapon go through a
side of beef like that scissor did. It

was butter.

In terms of versatility, I have to give
the edge to the Tomahawk.

I see both your points, so for me, I'm
going to let the computer decide.

Close range, a nimble Apache is going to
take down a clumsy Gladiator. It's a

close call, but the Apache Tomahawk gets
the edge in short -range weapons.

But the Gladiators have a deadly duo of
weapons waiting to snare the Apache

warrior.

Apache versus Gladiator.

Two warriors locked in a fight to the
death.

The heavy -armed gladiators with the big
shields, they wear a mannequin like

this. But what they didn't cover was
their chest.

The chest was their badge of honor. That
was their target.

Come and get it if you can.

Apache warriors didn't have armor.

They relied on speed and amazing skill
with their weapons.

The Apache culture is a fighting
society.

The honor of the Apache is in raiding.
It is in dominating.

It is in fighting multiple attackers.

That's where your pride is. That's your
whole purpose.

The word Apache is a Zuni Indian word
which means the enemy.

Gladiators trained against the deadliest
enemy of their day.

Fellow gladiators.

Gladiator training was the toughest in
the world. These gladiators trained to

fight.

It takes a lot of training to teach how
to kill effectively against a human

target.

In that school, their job was to mold
him into a killing machine.

Apache's not going to go toe -to -toe.
He wants to hit and he wants to run

The gladiator doesn't have a runaway
reflex.

It's not fight or flight. It's fight
only.

Like gladiators, Apaches loved close
combat, and their weapon of choice, the

knife.

Simple, savage, and in the hands of an
Apache, dead.

To prove the point, Alan and Snake apply
lipstick to the blades of these

training weapons.

They love the color of blood. Knife may
not look like much, but when used by an

Apache, it's one of the most efficient
killing tools there is.

I mean, it's chicken scratching. Look,
it's a bunch of theory, Bill.

The Apache knife fighter was the
greatest knife fighter in the entire

history of guerrilla war fighting
tactics.

They don't just carry one knife. They'll
carry multiple knives. If they could

carry 20 knives, they'd carry 20 knives.
Why?

Because they're going to throw one at
one opponent.

They're going to stab another, grab
another weapon. You know, he's there.

If you got 20 people, you're going to
destroy 20 people.

Apache knife fighters mastered several
methods of attack.

The common one for the slashing or the
lightning strikes, you also got the

piercing. They actually call this the
piercing buffalo because of the

effectiveness of it going straight to
the sternum or the heart. It's going to

puncture any and everything.

You got piercing buffalo to the face, to
the throat, to the chest or sternum, to

the abdominal, and to the groin. If the
person's attacking high, you're going to

come around, cut out.

Right behind the hamstrings. You're
going to collapse them immediately.

The Apaches, bar none, were the greatest
knife fighters in the entire world, and

it hasn't been beaten.

Dead gladiator.

That's three death strikes in under
three seconds.

Boom, boom, boom.

This is out from 15 feet. That's three
kills.

in 2 .44 seconds. When I reduce that to
one -on -one combat in the simulator,

that's going to be devastating.

What was the saying you guys had?

We who are about to die salute you. I
think you better do some saluting.

very impressive.

That's a great lesson. I guess I won't
stand there and let you throw a knife at

me.

Could you put the lipstick back on the
knife again? I like that part. That was

pretty cute. Is it chartreuse?

gladiators have a weapon to counter the
Apache knife fighter.

The trident.

Three barbed prongs of razor -sharp
death.

This weapon was more effective than a
spear, even.

Thrown, it offered 12 inches of
penetration.

If it missed on the dead -on target, it
still had the horns to hook with. And

even pulling out, these barbs would tear
flesh and break bones.

Once he got this in you, you were like a
fish on a gig.

The trident was even more deadly when
paired with the net.

In the gladiatorial arena, the net was
used with the trident. It was thrown at

the leg, it was thrown at the head, it
was meant to ensnare and entangle. The

most effective use of it was to throw.

After that, kill was ensured.

The idea of the trident, the net, to
keep him back. Keep him on the outside.

It's almost like you're goading a bull,
right?

You want to keep this up in his face
where he doesn't know where you're at to

come after you.

So as long as the gladiator can pull
with the net and strike with the trident

fast enough, the guy's got no chance.

But how deadly is the trident in actual
combat?

Trident versus body, trident wins.

But the issue is, will it maim or hurt
the person enough that they can't strike

back?

The team will test the trident's dicking
power to see how deadly three prongs

can really be.

Basically went right underneath the rib,
hit the heart directly. This one

actually hit the spleen.

But you know what? This middle shot is
the kill. I mean, you hit, look at that.

Even more blood coming out. Yeah. I
mean, it pumps out in a couple seconds.

guy is on the floor, dead.

Okay, you got your little pitchfork for
your fishing.

Pay attention to this. This is where you
die, right here. See this?

And there it goes. Oh!

And that's why it's spurting like that.

Right in his eyeball.

Now that is something that you shouldn't
do as a gladiator. I mean, if one of my

residents in a teaching hospital did
that when they saw blood... That's what

you're saying, is we have a squeamish
gladiator. I can fight blind.

I think you're right.

This is a nice weapon, but notice it's a
two -handed weapon also.

No defense involved. It's a totally
offensive, you know, mid -range target

weapon. Look how effective. You miss
with the thinner prong, the outside

hooked. You can't miss with it. We never
touched upon the fact that there's

barbs on the trident, which make it very
damaging when you pull it out.

But can the trident compete against the
Apache's knife?

I thought the trident could keep the
Apache at bay, but after I saw that

demo, I got to give it to the Apache's
knife.

The Apache brings only an offensive
attack.

The net is not just an offensive weapon,
it also is a defensive weapon. I think

we have to give the edge to the trident
and the net as a combination.

Trident -net combination gives the
gladiator the edge at medium range

But our Apaches have yet to unveil their
deadliest weapon.

So which arrow do you prefer?

Whichever one goes through your heart.

When it came to fighting die, gladiators
and Apaches were

opposite.

Because the whole goal of an Apache is
to kill as many people as you possibly

can. If the odds look overwhelming,
sneak away, fight them on another day.

far as Apaches go, they're very tough.

They're used to functioning as a unit,
ambushing.

Apaches were masters of ambush, but it
was very smart. It was very strategic.

No such thing as a fair fight to an
Apache.

To an Apache, fair is rare.

They don't fight individually. They run
away.

A gladiator can't run away.

You run away, you die.

Most of the gladiator's weapons were
designed for close combat.

But for long -range attack, the
gladiator had a simple age -old weapon.

This blade.

Lightweight and effective.

These two strips of wool could do
serious damage.

The sling is an easy -to -transport
weapon. Fit right in a pocket. It could

throw a pretty heavy projectile. And if
you depleted what you carried in with

you, you could literally pick up a rock
off the ground.

The sling was a crude but lethal weapon
that packed a powerful punch.

It looks simplistic, but everybody knows
the tale of David Goliath. One shot

right between the eyes, and that'll do
the trick. It loads pretty quick. Put it

right in there.

Throw. Next piece. Put it right in
there.

Throw. So this is lead, this is not a
rock.

Absolutely. Loading.

The sling launches like a miniature
rocket.

Firing.

So 91 miles per hour max?

To determine the damage from a perfect
shot, our team brings in the most

accurate slinger in the last 2 ,000
years.

An air cannon.

The sling -sized projectile would be
fired at a skull with the same density

bone.

The important thing to remember here is
that it's a cannon that's been

pressurized to achieve the same velocity
on that projectile as a proficient

sling thrower would actually be able to
achieve.

Three, two, one.

There it is.

Wow. Well, if this was Goliath, he's
dead.

If you can generate a force anywhere
near what this just demonstrated, it's a

one -shot kill.

Yep.

As far as accuracy, you've been reading
too many Bible stories.

But if it hits, this is what happens.

Straight through the mustache. Dig in,
dig in.

You know, in a thousand battles,
anything can happen. I think we're going

have to see what the simulator says.

The Apache distance weapon is just as
old and deadly accurate.

The bow and arrow.

An ancient weapon dating back to the
Stone Age, but timeless in its ability

deliver death.

I got my first bow and arrow when I was
four years old.

The bow is a silent weapon. It can be
fired from a long distance and it won't

heard. It'll be felt.

An Apache is known to fire as many as 15
arrows per minute.

For the Apache, the arrow is...

meant to kill.

We've got obsidian arrowheads, which
will crack as they enter the body and

splinter, causing a lot of pain.

And then we have rusted metal arrows,
which will penetrate vital organs, and

they'll die soon from the infection.

So which arrow do you prefer?

Whichever one goes through your heart.

So what we've got here is a chronometer,
or a speed trap.

As this weapon tracks through the first
laser beam, it starts a timer. As it

passes through the second laser beam, it
stops that timer. With a known distance

and a known time, we've got the speed of
this weapon.

Dead gladiator. For that arrow, it was
95 feet per second, which is 65 miles an

hour. If he was within 48 feet, he'd be
hit. And with his helmet on, he won't

even see what's coming.

The arrow was fired, and extremely
accurate at a distance.

What kind of damage will it do to the
unprotected chest of a gladiator?

These are the flint arrows, and I'm
going to kill that damn gladiator.

The damage is devastating.

There's a couple really impressive
shots.

First into the chest is this one. I
mean, it goes straight through right in

between the ribs, which is crucial. What
about this arrow? It took his throat.

Basically, it severs the spine and kills
the person instantly. It shuts the

gladiator's mouth.

Well, that too, I guess. And then this
actually will go upward to the base of

the brain.

So in the end, guys, this is a long
-range fight. Bow versus sling.

The bow had the longest range.

First hit is probably the first one to
win the fight, so I'm going to go with

the bow on that one. The bow was way
more accurate, way more deadly.

I think we're unanimous.

Edge appeared.

Coming up, the gladiators respond with a
weapon designed to exploit.

Taking that Apache apart piece at a
time.

Showdown between Apache and gladiator.

One attacks head -on.

The other uses stealth and surprise.

It's said that you fought an Apache all
day and you never saw one. They would

paint their bodies with clay, but they
always did it to blend into their

environment. They would become a part of
the ground and come up, shoot their

bows, cut them down with their knives,
and then they'd disappear again.

The Apache is good. He knows his
terrain.

He's got a lot of vitality. He's been
running around a lot.

But there is nothing to hide behind that
a gladiator won't seek and destroy. It

doesn't matter if you use a tree. It
doesn't matter what you bring.

Apache like to hit and run. There's no
running. It's a circular arena and you

die. To thrill the crowd, gladiators had
weapons that were brutal and deceptive.

Like the seeker, angled to fiendish
strikes that the enemy never sees

The Seeker was an awesome killing
machine.

It could go around the shield. That's
what it was designed to do. Worked

armor. You could flip it around, dive
underneath the shield.

It was a very effective weapon in both
killing and as a crowd pleaser.

To test the Seeker's cutting power, our
gladiators bring in an artificial arm,

holding an Apache shield for
inspiration.

Ready, Steve?

Ready. Three, two, one, go!

Ready!

All right, Steve, so you definitely have
a really deep laceration here. It goes

through the skin, through the soft
tissue, down through the muscle, into

bone. And this is as big as it gets
without actually completely amputating

arm. Taking that Apache apart a piece at
a time.

But the native warriors have their own
weapon that can both attack and defend.

The War Club.

A simple but devastatingly lethal weapon
in the right hands.

The beauty of the Apache War Club is the
fact that you have a solid object at

the end, whether it's a solid piece of
bone or whether it's a solid piece of

rock. It's going to do some serious
damage, more than people expect.

Turn into dust.

The skull basically disintegrated with
that blow.

From dust we come and dust we end up.

But what would the club do to a
gladiator wearing a helmet?

Dead gladiator part two.

Standard headgear for a gladiator. You
again. I thought we killed you. Nice. I

like to see you get through here.

All right. Another big piece of the
block is peripheral view. It's like a

that can only see straight.

Plus, you got, what, 15 pounds of
headgear here? Give me your best shot.

you going to move with any weapon? I'm
not even with the best shot.

You ready, Snake?

Ready. Okay.

This helmet really did its job.

Now, if there's a little bit of padding
in here, I think he's going to be all

right. If the fight went more than a few
minutes, you'd be tired just helling

that around. The helmet disables your
club.

The last time you had 15 pounds of iron
on your head and a 10 -pound sword, and

you had to move fast, you're not going
to move fast.

It broke your weapon. You just can't
overcome what this guy's bringing.

Okay, so what we see, at least with this
test, helmet versus club, the helmet

wins.

Snake isn't giving up.

But the numbers don't lie.

The Seeker gives the Gladiator the edge
in special weapons.

With the testing complete, Max Geiger
will take the results and feed them into

the computer program that will simulate
the battle.

The Apache is going to try and get in
there fast.

He's going to try to move out. The
Gladiator is going to constantly pursue.

There's no thought of running away.
There's no thought of fleeing. There's

the thought of killing.

The Apache is not afraid of anything.

They're not afraid of rattlesnakes.
They're not afraid of scorpions. They're

certainly not going to be afraid of a
gladiator.

Both teams are convinced their warriors
will win.

But our experts are now divided.
