John's my production designer, and it's
his job to take my twisted creations and

help bring them to life.

Doug's my fabricator, and because he's
been practicing magic for over 20 years,

he has an understanding that not many
builders do. He can actually make magic

that works.

Kristen is my apprentice. I met her
after she won the National Junior

Competition. One day she'll get her shot
on my live tour, Whimsical.

Jesse is my researcher, and he's
responsible for providing information

help us accomplish each demonstration.

Who's to secure this today? Last but not
least.

Spiro's job is to find locations based
on weather, crowd size, and any special

requirements of any given demonstration.

When Harry Houdini died in 1926, he was
preparing for a stunt called Buried

Alive. Hey man, what's up?

I'm going to take on the same challenge
and let my team know we only have two

weeks to accomplish it. How many people
have seen that poster of Houdini in the

coffin? It's right over there on the
wall.

There it is. Buried alive.

The effect he never did? He never did it
because he said the weight of the earth

was crushing. They had to dig him out. I
have a lot of experience, but this is

beyond anything I've ever done. I want
to be buried alive in an above -ground

tomb.

A real escape.

And I also have a little something to
throw in there, a little caveat. Sure

do.

I want to be completely manacled in the
style of Houdini depicted in his

posters. So it's taking two of
Houdini's, you know, iconic

signature posters and bringing them to
life in a demonstration that has never

been attempted above ground, but has
below ground.

And the guy died.

Well, he was underground with like a
thin layer of cement and that crushed

He was very naive in believing that he
could just go and do this. And I don't

mean any disrespect to his memory. You
got to respect that. But you also can't

be foolish in going into something.
That's why you guys are here.

That's why we do our due diligence,
because I don't want to end up.

with the same fate. Joe Burr and Houdini
both died on Halloween Eve, and the

fact that neither one of them lived to
even attempt what Chris is proposing has

me very nervous.

Are we talking about a steel box and
then we have some windows in it?

Whatever, John, you need to figure that
out. If the goal is to make this

demonstration as spectacular as possible
and to prove that there's no trickery

involved... We can build a grave out of
transparent material so the audience

will have a 360 -degree view.

It's like a glass coffin in a glass box.

That's what we're talking about.

Wow. Right there.

Because when you're in the ground,
people are always suspicious.

Like, could there be something going on
that we're unaware of? I want to show

people that it's pure escape.

Do you know how much pressure is going
to be on that inner coffin?

I'm sitting here thinking about this,
Gordon.

I've never been a part of building
something like that. If I'm not

myself and you're not challenging
yourself, then we're just wasting each

time. It's what makes this job exciting.

If Houdini were alive today, this is the
shit that Houdini would be doing. We

want to go into uncharted territories
and we want to raze the states.

With this demonstration, the clock's
already ticking.

We only have two weeks to go.

John and Doug need to build the glass
coffin and the tomb with enough time for

me to rehearse.

airtight transparent coffin and grave,

This is one of the most dangerous stuff
ever.

Yo,

Burr. Right. His box, his coffin, was
only quarter inch. And that collapsed.

Immediately. Instantly, as soon as they
dumped the weight on it, it was quarter

-inch plexiglass. It already had a crack
in it, so it had no structure. There

was no way that that was going to
withstand any amount of pressure.

Whether I'm performing a death -defying
escape like the Mencrave or an illusion,

it's always about the fans.

Welcome to the Loyal Vault here at the
Believe Theater in the Luxor where I

perform 10 shows a week.

My fans worldwide are called Loyals and
they are dedicated.

So much so that they've sent me
thousands upon thousands of amazing

art. And what's fascinating to me is
that they're all so very different, you

know?

For example, this was inspired from a
photograph when I was on my Harley

Davidson, and they did a wonderful piece
with that. This art and this room have

inspired some of my greatest pieces of
work.

You want to know how I did that?

Can you guess?

Maybe I'll show you.

The room I was just in is a replica
built here on the stage of our magic

factory. But then we had to create the
illusion of the can floating.

This piece was inspired from a
photograph.

By rotating the entire room, with Doug
standing above and with me leaning with

my back against the pulse, It's very
clear how we achieved the desired

So now you've seen how the illusion
works.

Keep in mind, though, my cement grade
will be anything but an illusion.

For the cement grave demonstration,
Chris will be restrained in nine locks,

handcuffs, leg irons, and then locked
inside of a glass coffin.

Then he'll be lowered into a glass grave
and buried in wet cement.

The coffin itself is about 24 cubic
feet.

Under stress, the average person
consumes about one and a half cubic feet

per minute, and Chris will have about 15
minutes of safe oxygen inside the

coffin, which breaks down to about
picking a lock every 90 seconds.

I want to see if I run into trouble and
I can't get out or I need help or

something happens.

That's the other thing that's been
keeping me up.

We could rig the cameras inside the
coffin to monitor Chris's progress, but

that time limit passes and we do need to
get to Chris, there'll be 12 tons of

cement between us and him. We'll be able
to see you kicking, but once you're

free and once you start to escape the
coffin itself...

Cement is going to take over and wash
everything out. Chris won't only have to

be fast, he'll have to be perfect.

And because we're up against such a time
crunch, we've got to get this grave and

coffin built as soon as we can so we
have enough time to test it. If we pass

water test, we step it up to the next
level and do the cement test.

What's up, man?

What's up?

Couldn't leave my house. Finding time to
hang out with friends is definitely

challenging. I met Ice -T back in 2002
when I broke the world record as I hung

from six fish hooks literally for six
hours.

And ever since then, we've been good
friends.

You're looking good, man.

Yeah. Sharp as steak knives. Jack, I'm
telling you, baby, you come to the hood,

they cut your hair correctly. Well, they
have to or else they have a big

problem. There's going to be a problem.
Yeah, it's not like going to Beverly

Hills, you know. They give you that
whack haircut.

You talking about mine right now? No,
no, that's good. Look, I was thinking,

when me and Coco came to your show,
right, you did a trick with razor

-hmm. Crazy trick, right? Yeah, I knew
that since I was like 13.

I was thinking since we in a barbershop,
maybe they got some razor blades you

could show the homies this trick live.

What? Who twisted those up? Oh.

This looks like a sewer tank.

Let's put it like this.

I don't believe in magic.

I'm a skeptic, so I know it's a trick.

But even though it's a trick, I can't
figure out how to make a trick.

Coming up. We do it without a rehearsal,
or we don't do it at all.

The last person to attempt cement grave
was Joe Burris. He was just 32 years old

when he died trying it.

Burris was hoping that his attempt at
fateful Halloween night would put him on

map as a rising star in magic.

Anytime the consequences of a
demonstration are death, like they are

grave, I can't help but think about how
impermanent life is.

Check out that chick's tattoos over
there. That's a really cool tattoo.

I always wanted to do something with the
tattoo because it's like something

that's permanent.

But what if it wasn't permanent? You
know, like what if you can make it, you

know, like something that is there and
then like it's not there.

Instead of going for like laser
treatments to get rid of it, just make

vanish. That'd be neat. Or bring it to
life.

Manipulate a real tattoo. Manipulate
reality.

You know?

Yeah. I want to try that.

Really? No way.

It's awesome.

That's why I love coming out to dinner
with you.

Hey, how are you? I don't want to
interrupt you. You have a lot of

tattoos. I'm sure they all have a lot of
different meanings, right? And I see

that you're eating sushi.

And I noticed that you had a bird and
you had some fish right over there on

arm. You see that right over there? So
this is the concept. Can I take that and

try something with it?

Yeah, absolutely.

I looked down, I grabbed a bite of food,
and when I picked my head up, he was

sucking on her arm.

He sucked it out, and then he spit out a
live fish into the cup.

The whole thing is crazy.

Focus, baby, focus.

Mind over matter.

In five days, Cement Grave will
challenge my ability to remain focused

conserve oxygen.

Until the team has the coffin built and
I'm able to test it, I need to be

creative and prepare as much as
possible.

I've asked a retired Navy SEAL friend of
mine to put me to the test.

You want to slow your heart rate, slow
your breathing, and that gives you more

oxygen to last a lot longer.

I mean, I think my best breath hold was
maybe three minutes.

And I understand Chris has gone for
five, six minutes before, so he's pretty

amazing.

Yeah, yeah. If I'm unsuccessful here,
there's no way I'll be able to pick the

locks, break free of the coffin, and
crawl through 12 tons of cement.

When I'm not dealing with new and
exciting ways to potentially get myself

killed, nothing's more exciting to me
than testing new illusions on complete

strangers.

We're going to try a little experiment.

What I'm interested in doing is to
create a human canvas.

And what I mean by that is I actually
need somebody to help me out to sit in

chair that I can cover up as our human
canvas.

Now I'm going to ask you, your name is?
Tony. Tony, have a seat over here for

me. Okay.

And did you clean that slate for me?
Okay, good.

Pick up your both ends.

Raise that up. And I'll try this with
you, okay?

What I want you to do, huh?

You can do me a favor. Cover Tony up for
me. Cover Tony up for me.

Good. Just like that. Perfect.

Now, what I want you to do is to think
of a man.

Now, you don't know Tony, do you? No, I
don't. And Tony doesn't know you.

Okay. I want you to think of a man for

Okay. Just get one in your mind.

Now, Tony, I want you to hold on to the
tablet. Just raise your hand up just a

little bit.

Perfect. Right there. Good.

I want you to first look. Is this man

And you were visualizing, weren't you?
Yes.

Because I picked that up as well, and I
got Stan.

Is that right?

And not only that, you can visualize
Tony as Stan, or I can take Tony and

actually make him your husband.

Little did they know I was going to show
up, so here I am.

I didn't expect him at all. He could
appear out of nowhere from Afghanistan.

Yes, I believe in magic.

And we got a surprise.

I want

to tell you, Adam, the more than a
thousand demonstrations I've done in my

career, this has been the most poetic,
the most beautiful one of all. If it

wasn't for people like him who have
served, America wouldn't be the greatest

country in the world. And I thank you so
much for that.

It looks pretty snug.

You got a freaking heat right now? I eat
when I'm nervous.

Wait till we are done.

We're hardly even there yet. Oh, man.

It looks sweet.

Third length. How's that? That's good.

How's that feeling to call it?

Tomorrow night, I'll attempt to escape
cement grave.

where I'll be bound with shackles.

I've survived waterboarding, but this is
the only chance I'll have to rehearse

this thing.

How do I rehearse this right now? You're
going to rehearse it when we put the

water in the tank. Is water in the tank?

Chris, we have another hose coming.

Well, if anything ever went smoothly,
I'd be concerned.

Given the limited time we've had, it
might have been a better idea to choose

less complicated and expensive
demonstration.

The coffin is essentially an air
capsule, and an air capsule in water

push up. It's like taking a ball and
going in a pool and trying to push it

It always has that force that wants to
push up.

So now we have to figure out a way to
either pin the coffin to the metal stand

or get thicker straps.

But this is solvable, but the problem is
it's going to eat up valuable time.

We've gotten the coffin secured enough
for Chris to give it a test run in

This is the coolest thing ever.

Chris being able to see this.

It stays attached and we release it.
This is too basic to turn around.

I don't want him in there. You know, we
still haven't tested if the coffin can

even hold up to the stresses of cement.
It's kind of cool, isn't it? It felt

really cool.

It's also 35 degrees warmer than
predicted for tomorrow night.

And I understand in the perfect world,
if I didn't have two shows tonight, we

could go through every protocol and get
to the crescendo, if you will.

But I bought the confidence to go in
there knowing I only have 15 minutes of

that I'm able to get out of all those
and then get through the cement, get out

of that thing. I don't want to do it for
the very first time.

Running a mirage with thousands of
people watching. I need to go in the

concrete. What time is it now? Load it
with the concrete so you can swim

With this heat out here, the cement will
harden faster.

And if we put Chris into it now, this
rehearsal could turn into a disaster

really fast.

I sat here for five hours. I'm supposed
to do it. If we fill this with cement

right now, it's done.

Once we fill this tank up, we have a
block of cement.

So it's either we do it without a
rehearsal or we don't do it at all.

We backed into a date for tomorrow
night. But the only problem is I haven't

had a chance to rehearse this. It killed
Joe Burris back in the 90s. And we got

to get this right.

Wish I had a better answer for you.

Anytime Chris performs a demonstration
of this magnitude, the

fans come out in droves.

Two weeks ago, Chris secured this
awesome location.

The coffin and the grave are in
position.

Chris is wrapping up his live show. And
while we wait, thousands of fans are

arriving. It's insanely crowded.

Chris is 20 minutes away, and the
audience is getting so big. It's going

,000 to 3 ,000 people, and everybody's
very nervous about crowd control and

safety. We need to close off the street,
or we need to have more police.

We don't have enough.

I wasn't told to shut down the
boulevard. I shut down certain lanes.

told to do was to secure an ambulance.

and the appropriate safety personnel.

So this isn't my fault. We have six
officers. We have like 4 ,000 people

We agreed on a certain amount of police
officers, and we have them here, right?

And we underestimated. Okay, then. We
need to get more police down here to be

able to shut the streets down.

If we get shut down, this will be the
first time in my 20 years with Chris

ever had to cancel. It is dangerous, and
the ambulance is a very real thing.

Okay.

My thing is good.

We get people that are trampled on. I
get one person getting killed.

We got people all the way down that way.
We got people going down that way.

You got people behind all of this.

People on all across the street. Nothing
I want.

We don't want that. The newspaper
tomorrow, you know, coming up.

location planning is such a critical
element of every demonstration we do i

the fact that sparrows got an ambulance
and didn't even think about how the

ambulance was going to get to chris in
an emergency it's baffling freshly

shutting it down

saying they have too many people out

Hey, guys, whenever we do a huge stunt
like this, we always were extremely

concerned about safety. This entire road
right here was supposed to be shut

down. It hasn't happened.

There's absolutely nothing Chris can do
about it. It's not his fault.

It's not me. It's the cops. Are you
kidding me? We're not shutting down the

entire stunt.

We will be doing it again. The cops are
shutting down cement green?

I need to get to Chris fast. I need to
keep him confident and let him know that

Spiro is working on a backup plan so
that he can attempt this tomorrow.

Chris is already exhausted

and not being able to rehearse a stunt
that killed Joe Burris. And this letdown

tonight has Chris questioning his
ability to even attempt this escape.

And it's my job to bring Chris's vision
to fruition.

And Spiro needs to find a backup
location for tomorrow.

No one saw the cancellation last night
coming, so we've shifted our entire

production here to the Luxor. Chris has
already $250 ,000 into this

demonstration alone.

The best we can do now is work out all
the kinks today so that tonight when

Chris gets here, he can focus on what's
important and deliver on the promise to

his fans.

Houdini never even attempted a cement
grave, and lack of rehearsals and

exhaustion, it's rendered Chris very
vulnerable right now, at a moment when

needs every bit of strength and every
bit of focus.

Ladies and gentlemen, time for history
of my

death. Chris is about to attempt a
demonstration with two forms of escape

synonymous with Houdini.

Being restrained with handcuffs, nine
locks, and leg irons, and being buried

alive. Even if Chris is able to break
himself free from the restraints, he's

to take whatever strength he has left,
break out of the coffin, and then claw

through 12 tons of cement.

I hope with your energy.

And with your love, that we will all be
successful.

To say I'm not nervous would be complete
bullshit.

But the energy of the crowd is
unbelievable.

It's keeping me focused and in the
moment for what I'm about to do.

I've had people my entire career tell me
why something wouldn't work, and I've

always proven them wrong.

Right now, I gotta focus on what matters
most. Breaking free of this coffin in

the 15 minutes I have before I run out
of air, or I'm crushed by 12 tons of

cement.

Nice and easy.

He's already got a lock up. Come on,
come on, come on, come on.

It's still seven locks away. Eight locks
to go? Yep.

Slow down, Chris.

Breathe, breathe, breathe. Stop moving.

Just take the lock. Stop moving.

The more he moves, the more oxygen he's
using.

This is not good.

It's almost up.

He's never done it before. He didn't
even rehearse it before. He should have

been out already. Yes.

John, how long do we wait?

Because the longer that waits, the
harder it's hardening every second. I
