Your mother!

Dr. Mike?

She's at the clinic.

That's right.

Why?

I care for you.

You know that.

We are not married.

Matthew!

Mike! I thought you were working.

What are you doing here?

Nothing. I bring the laundry.

Ingrid, would you excuse me? I want to talk to Matthew.

We're not doing anything.

I'll go now.

Are you all right?

I can't.

Has this happened before?

I don't know.

Ask my time.

Be all right, Ingrid.

Just stay calm. Take short breaths.

Matthew, help me get her out of here.

Just take a small breath.

What's that?

It's chloroform.

It'll relax the air passages and stop the fathoms. Don't be scared. It won't

hurt. It's all right. It'll help you. Here.

Just take a small breath.

She should be put right to bed with a mustard plaster.

She could stay here.

Nay.

I not want to trouble for you. It's no trouble.

Go.

It'll be better for you to rest.

Please.

My brother worry.

Well, if that's the case.

I'll take you home.

Take this. Mix it with hot water. Make it into a paste.

Soak it in a cloth and put it on your chest.

Yeah.

Thank you.

About what?

About what happened before between you and Ingrid. Nothing happened.

Matthew. You don't believe me?

It's not that. It's just... Love is a beautiful thing.

When people are ready.

I don't want to talk about this.

But there are things you should know about.

I could try to... It's private.

Plants look good.

How much have you been watering them?

Beg your pardon?

Something troubling you?

No.

Yes, it's Matthew.

What about him?

He and Ingrid?

I found them in the barn.

Together in the hay.

Kissing?

So?

When people get excited, they might do something they regret.

So they try to pretend it didn't happen.

Sometimes it's too late.

Is that so?

Could you talk to Matthew?

What am I supposed to say?

You're a man.

You could tell him things he needs to know.

I think he already knows.

Please, I'm worried.

Matthew? Yes, Oli.

You, uh... You know how a woman gets pregnant.

Of course.

Good.

You got any questions you want to ask me?

Nope.

Good.

Where you going?

Some of your business.

See Ingrid a bit?

No. Going to Jake's. What for?

For a haircut.

Is that all right?

Yes, of course.

You need some money?

Got my own.

Listen to this.

In the territory of Wyoming, they want to pass a law that gives ladies the

to vote.

That ain't never gonna happen.

How about a shave?

Shave?

That's right.

Shave.

Why, sure.

About time this young man had a shave.

I miss you.

Well, what do you have?

Give him a whiskey.

Matthew,

you

been with the woman yet?

How about that little sweet?

She looks mighty, uh...

Sweet.

Don't talk about her like that.

Oh, come on, son. We don't mean no offense.

He hasn't been with one.

Come on.

Careful,

it's hot.

Now, these are the leaves of the detour plant.

I want you to inhale the vapors.

That's it.

The leaf contains something called stromonium. And if you use it every

Every day? For a few weeks, yes. It'll prevent your attacks.

I don't understand this.

Why did this happen to me?

Well, no one knows what causes asthma.

Some people believe it's a nervous disorder.

So you should avoid becoming overly excited.

Take another breath.

Doesn't that feel better?

Yeah.

You ain't paid yet.

Go, you cowboy! You just did it!

Uh, don't take no offense, Myra, but I don't think I want to.

Well, that's all right. I was just trying to get more like you. Myra, tell

Sweetheart. Do you love her?

Yes, ma 'am.

I got a sweetheart, too.

Of course.

We're going to get married.

Well, I got this contract, but we're going to have to wait.

Dr. Mike says I'm too young.

Hey, what's taking so long, a young buck like you? You stop that now!

Go on, get out the window.

I want to see you tomorrow.

I have not money to pay you. We'll arrange something.

You could do laundry for the clinic.

Oh, my God.

Matthew. Come over here. Matthew.

Right this minute.

Matthew. Ingrid.

Matthew, come back.

Matthew.

Let him be.

Ingrid, wait. Listen to me.

I see.

She was only trying to help me escape, that's all.

Matthew! Stop it.

You're embarrassing him. I'm embarrassing him?

He's out of control.

He's growing up.

And I'll thank you not to order me about.

Fine.

I don't want to be with anybody with you. You've got to trust me.

Is that true?

I swear.

What's the matter, Michaela?

This tastes good, Ma.

Good as Grace's.

Actually, it is Grace's.

Matthew, I'm sorry if I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

You are growing up, and it's time that you broaden your horizons a little.

What do you mean?

I'd like to take you to St. Louis.

What for?

To look at schools and colleges.

I don't want to go to college.

I like it here.

Besides, I don't want to leave Ingrid.

Ingrid is lovely.

But she's the first girl you've ever come to know, and you should meet

I don't want to meet others.

When I look at Ingrid, she makes me smile.

She knows what I'm thinking before I can even say it.

It makes me feel like I can do anything.

I want to marry her.

You're getting married?

Matthew, you're only 16.

I'm almost 17.

Mama's 16 when she married Paula.

How old was your wife, Sally?

Abigail was 18.

Times are changing.

Where? Boston?

support the two of you work for miss olive ranching what's wrong with

nothing but why rush into it when you have the rest of your life i want to

the rest of my life with ingrid i don't care what you say

you are not getting married why because i forbid it

Where's your brother?

I don't know. He got up early and went out.

What about his chores?

The counties melt.

I'll do it.

There's no wood in the house.

Maybe he's getting married.

He's not getting married.

I like Ingrid.

Maybe they're going to run off.

He left.

Hello.

He wouldn't do that.

You think I'm too young to get married?

Cheyenne say that once you prove yourself as a man, you got the right to

How do you do that?

You go out on a vision quest.

Spend four days, four nights, no food, no water.

Glad I'm not Cheyenne.

You learn about yourself.

Learn what your path is.

Who your allies are.

You ever do that?

I've done it a couple times.

What?

Become a better man.

If I were to do that, you think Dr. Mike could see me as a man?

See yourself that way.

I don't know what you mean, my brother.

He is handsome, no?

No. It's funny when he takes off that hat.

But he has good heart.

Very kind.

I mean, he don't ride his horse.

I think he like horse better than he like me.

No, he doesn't.

Has Matthew been by yet?

No.

You haven't seen him, have you?

This morning, he come to the camp.

Did he say where he was going?

He say, you not like me.

Not... I not good enough for Matthew.

I don't think that.

You both so young.

In my country, I study for school. teacher.

I read.

I learn many things.

I'm sure you do.

And you're very brave coming to a new place like this.

I must learn English quickly.

You're doing a fine job, Ingrid.

Please calm down.

Before you seek your victim, you must prepare yourself.

All I can teach you is to still and listen.

Listen to what?

Wind, trees, the animals.

Learn to hear what they have to say in their own language.

Animals talk to you.

When a crow speaks, it's time to move on.

A coyote may tell you someone is coming.

I don't know about this.

It sounded strange to me, too, at first.

What else do I have to do?

You must complete a task.

Like what?

Bring me the egg of a red -tailed hawk.

And it must be a perfect egg.

Not dancing.

Your task was to bring me a perfect egg.

This is not.

What do you mean?

This is nothing. This is a hairline crack.

But it's not perfect.

You have to bring another egg.

Fiona went through to get this?

Next time, you'll be more careful.

Next time.

Forget it. She's crazy.

Matthew! Matthew,

where have you been? I've been sick with Warren. Why?

I thought something had happened to you. Don't yell. Awake the kid.

Save some dinner for you.

You didn't do the chores.

Do them after I eat. That's not acceptable.

Why not?

If you don't milk the cow, someone else has to. It got milked, didn't it? Not

the point.

I missed one day.

What's the big problem? I don't have to answer to you.

As long as you're living in this house, I'm afraid you do.

Fine. I won't live here anymore.

I agree with Dr.

Mike. Matthew and Ingrid are too young to get married.

Oh, you and Maude weren't much older.

Oh, that was different.

I courted her for three years.

We don't have to take that long.

Some folks know right away.

I say he's of age.

Of course, I don't entirely approve of his choice.

She's very sweet.

She's a foreigner.

She hasn't had it easy. She lost both her parents soon after she arrived here.

She does work hard.

He'll need that for ranching.

Olive, I wish you wouldn't force this ranching idea on him.

Force?

I'm helping him get started.

You're the one trying to run his life for him. He don't want to go to college.

It's because he hasn't been exposed to it.

He's quite intelligent.

What?

Ranchers ain't quite intelligent?

That's not what I mean. But once he's there in the college... I know him a lot

longer than you.

I say he'd prefer a ranching.

And I'll thank you both to stop making plans for me.

Take some heavy twine.

It's number two nails.

Miss you too, little brother.

Please come home.

Everyone wants you back.

Sorry,

I got to pee by myself for a little while.

What are you going to do?

Work for Miss Olive?

I don't like watching cattle all day.

I like building things.

Fishing.

I thought I'd try mining.

Today's not always so good.

I don't know. Seems like everything's gone wrong.

You gave up the quest.

What?

Cheyenne quest.

You give up, you lose your way.

The world becomes empty.

I'm not Cheyenne.

It's not about being Cheyenne, Matthew.

It's about finishing what you start.

That's what a man does.

Matthew's moved out of the house.

Oh, sorry to hear that.

Has he spoken to you?

No, not recently.

Please, promise me you won't marry him if they ask you.

Dr. Mike, I can't honestly do that.

I know it's hard. It's always hard for the mother. Do you think I'm wrong?

I mean, it's such an enormous step, and they know so little of this world.

I marry young folks all the time, and if it's the right person that they marry,

then they do fine.

Then I see other people just wait and search, and in the end they marry

not suitable for them.

Just it.

How does one know?

Well, they know one thing for certain.

Marriage won't stand much chance of succeeding without your blessing.

What are you doing?

I take that job with the family in Denver.

Nice family.

I take care of children.

You can't go to Denver.

I'll never see you again.

Dr. Mike is right.

Too many problems.

No.

David, don't you care about me?

It's better I go.

But she's only doing this because of you.

I know you're upset.

But maybe this is for the best.

If your feelings are sound, they'll wait until she returns.

What if she doesn't want to come back?

What if she doesn't want to wait?

Isn't it better that you find that out?

What if I lose her?

Then there wasn't much there.

It wasn't really love.

What do you know about love? I know more about it than you do.

You're a spinster!

I don't want to end up like you. I don't want to be alone.

You want to end up trapped in a marriage with eight children and no money?

Please, Matthew, don't do this. Then tell me what to do.

You're not my mom.

You're not a man.

Perfect.

Grandfather, we give thanks to this young man going out to sacrifice and

We ask that you give him good health and guidance and allow him to come back to

us, a man.

What happens when I need to drink?

You pray harder.

The spirits will tempt you.

You need to pray for everybody you've ever known.

Pray for your enemies.

Pray that your heart opens.

How do I know if what's in my heart is love?

Love takes a long time to grow.

It's like a delicate plant.

Pray for patience.

Whoa!

Ryan! How did you get here?

I followed you.

I wanted to watch.

You're ruining everything.

I'll take him home.

No. Everything has a purpose.

He can stay.

Dr. Mike know you followed us here?

No.

You should send somebody to tell her. She'll be worried.

Why didn't you bring Brian home with you?

The spirits say he is welcome in the sweat lodge.

And what about Matthew?

He's going to be dehydrated and you're sending him off for four days without

water? Your belief is strong. You do not need water.

That is physiologically impossible.

Take me there. Forbidden.

And Matthew won't survive.

He is safe.

When you're in the circle, nothing can harm you.

There's no protection.

In the circle, you are protected.

As long as you believe.

What do I do?

Watch, listen, pay attention.

Things will come to you.

Could be in the form of an animal, person, even lights.

What if I need help?

We will be close by.

I can't leave.

You always have a choice.

You choose how to live your life.

You're not much of a man if you don't have a choice.

I hope.

I hope.

Storm's coming.

You will be all right.

I couldn't see. I had to turn back.

It's supposed to rain all night.

It's my fault.

I provoked him into this terrible ordeal.

He'll come through.

I'm so frightened.

So is Ingrid.

Did you see her today?

She took a vapor treatment.

That's good.

Will her asthma be cured?

She'll learn to control it and it may disappear.

I'm glad.

You're going to be a gifted doctor, Colleen.

You listen to people.

So do you.

I didn't in this case.

Because it's always hard when... when a child of your own is moving on.

I remember my father.

When David and I became engaged, he never said a harsh word against him.

But he never smiled when he saw the two of us together.

And now I miss him.

What is it?

Matthew, he's in trouble.

Matthew is protected.

He sure Brian is his brother.

The spirits say he will stand.

Please, Holly.

I know he's in trouble.

Save him.

Let's go. No.

You said the boy was here for a purpose.

He knows Matthew better than anyone. Better than spirits?

You and I'll help Matthew by running to him now.

When you're in the circle, nothing can harm you.

Aho.

Matthew has seen what he needs to see.

Aho.

Where's Matthew?

He's on a vision quest.

I know that, but where is he?

I can't tell you.

Matthew as well.

How do you know that?

He knows.

You have no right to interfere where Matthew is concerned.

I'm responsible for his safety and guidance.

You can only guide people so far.

Well, I'll be the judge of that.

You wanted to become a doctor. Did your mother approve?

You moved to Colorado. Should you give her a blessing?

Those are your choices. Now it's time for Matthew to make his own.

Where is he?

I'll be back, Brian.

I was done for.

I was ready to leap into the bushes and run like crazy.

I closed my eyes.

I saw you.

I saw your faces.

I realized that all that matters is the people that you love.

Your family.

I could feel your love coming to me. That's what gave me the strength to

my ground.

I got goosebumps.

What are you going to do now?

I don't know.

That's the gate to wisdom.

Being able to say, I don't know.

Are you going to get married?

Not quite yet.

Colleen got Ingrid a job working for a family here in town.

And I'm gonna go to work.

I'm gonna save.

I save, too.

I'm gonna build a house.

We're gonna be engaged.

That's the case.

You'll need an engagement ring.

It's beautiful.

Thank you.

Ma?
