Well, I'm full of all kinds of

earnest money checks.

I think you can stretch your patience
another three weeks.

It's just that every week goes by, I get
more nervous.

Hey, now, you can't play a cool hand

hasn't moved an inch in the last eight

-town deputy.

Miss, at this age, I have no intention

My father did not drive off any cliff in

About the strongest thing he'd ever
drink would be a glass of sherry at

Christmas or a class reunion.

But a fifth of scotch in his house would

Well, that doesn't sound like a sipper,
much less a drinker.

dangerous stretch of mountain road.

His life was like a textbook on caution

and self -control.

And he drove the same way.

He thought Los Angeles to San Francisco
was a three -day trip.

This is the most recent picture of him
that I have.

You say he'd been up to Bryan Pass
several times in the last few weeks?

He'd bought some property near there.

Shadow Lake, I think he called it. He
was having sketches made of the cabin he

was planning on retiring in.

He was bubbling like a kid planting his
first treehouse.

If the truth will help you, I'll try to

I'm no expert, Mr. Jones, but I've had
to haul enough drinking drivers out of

Bryan Pass, dead and alive, to know that
road is no place for bottle babies.

Mr. Meacham's daughter said he wasn't a
drinker.

You know, I'm sure that girl thinks I'm
some kind of backwoods boy who got my

badge by sending in box stops.

You appear to me to be wearing it very

Still, she sounded pretty convincing.

Well, they say it's an age when fathers

I tell you, the booze flows pretty free
out of those weekend Shadow Lake

barbecues. I found a near -empty bottle
of scotch in the car.

Now, I didn't have the heart to tell his
daughter, but Meacham reeked of it.

Shadow Lake, that's where Mr. Meacham
bought some property.

Yeah, it's the best thing to happen to
Brian Pass in about 50 years.

You wouldn't be able to show me where
Mr. Meacham's property was.

Mr. Meacham bought. The bank is handling

the escrows.

Why? Well, it probably belongs to Mr.

Meacham's daughter now, who's a client
of mine. And while I'm up there, I

thought I'd take a look at her property.

It'd take a little while, and I'm
