Cramped and brutally uncomfortable
stagecoaches would occasionally be set

Indians, more often by highwaymen, and
even more frequently by broken

axles or harness trees, sometimes with
horrifying results.

Of all the modes of travel, the paddle
wheelers flying the generally placid

inland waterways were perhaps the most
comfortable.

But even the river managed to provide
occasional surprises.
