On the evening of June 20th, while
taking his nightly stroll through a

Los Angeles park, Calvin Betts suffered
a heart attack after what was thought to

be an attempted robbery.

A news vendor questioned at the scene of
the crime, told of seeing a young man

follow Betts into the park.

The description of this man, including
the presence of a limp, suggested to

police a suspect, Darrell Thomas Ryder,
a convicted bank robber, who, along with

inmate Henry Elkins, had just escaped
from a federal penitentiary, critically

wounding a guard in the process.

When the news vendor positively
identified Ryder's photograph, FBI

was requested.

Both fugitives were armed and considered
extremely dangerous.

According to this, Ryder was serving out
two robbery convictions at the time of

his escape.

So the first thing he does is go after
