On the afternoon of September 12th, an
unknown gunman shot and critically

wounded a Portland, Oregon city
commissioner, Warren Michaels.

The only eyewitness was the victim's
fishing partner, Tom Barber.

He was shown mug shots of known local
criminals and was able to identify

Michaels' assailant as Stephen Elliott
Chandler and furnish a description and a

license number of the car in which
Chandler fled.

When Chandler's getaway car was found
abandoned in Northern California across

state line, the FBI was called into the
case.

That was the hospital, Inspector.
Michael's still unconscious in very

condition.

Any indication of the motive?

Well, Michael's is a city commissioner,
and lately he's been pushing for tough

local laws aimed at organized crime.

He may have been putting more pressure
on them than they can take.

Chandler recently completed a sentence
for assault.

Prior to that, he served a term for
armed robbery, and he's known to have

connections.

Well, the feeling here seems to be that
the murder attempt was connected with

Michael's campaign against organized
crime.

Stephen Elliott Chandler recovered from
his wounds and pleaded guilty in state

court to attempted murder.

He also pleaded guilty in federal court
to interstate car theft.

Based in part on Chandler's testimony,
Lee Thompson and Bruno Riker were

convicted in state courts of conspiracy
and attempted murder.

Marty Green pleaded guilty to assaulting
federal officers and was returned to

the state of Illinois, where he was
tried and convicted of murder.
