as a pickpocket and a thief.

Allen was standing on the right side of
the law for the first and last time in

his life.

He was informing on the man who had
fatally wounded him.

Allen had spotted an ex -convict named
Ralph Dacre, also known as the Iceman,

second in command of a gang led by top
ten fugitive Scott Martin.

In the three months since his release
from Florida State Prison, Martin had

his gang in a series of bank robberies
ranging across the country and marked by

two savage murders.

John, contact Sheriff Homicide and get
an ambulance down to the Victory Drive

-In. Charlie Allen just took an ice pick
in the chest.

Right away, sir.

Ralph Dacre did it.

Allen spotted him going into the Samson
Lodge.

Get the name of the manager and ask
Washington for an immediate check. I

be sure of his background before we talk
to him.

Allen's tip would result in what is at
once the most complex and dangerous of

all the FBI actions.

And Inspector Lewis Erskine, in Los
Angeles for only a few hours between
