A routine police assignment had ended in
the brutal, premeditated murder of

three peace officers.

Not since 1933 and the bloody days of
Pretty Boy Floyd had there been such a

callous disregard for human life.

But one of the killers in making his
escape crossed the state line into West

Virginia.

And now it was a matter for the FBI.

And Howard Shaw had talked to Sheriff
Scott Abbott before he died.

And Abbott had identified one of the
gunmen.

Edward Warren Drake.

Drake.

Prisoner's brother.

There were three boys, Larry, Ed, and
Steve.

Howard, was there an indication that
Steve was in on this thing, too?

Well, if he was, Abbott didn't see him,
or at least he didn't recognize him. He

may not have known what Steve looked
like.

He knew.

That's why he came out here in the first
place.

I had a report from state penitentiary
about Steve.

Conditional release violation.

Marilyn was holding Larry on a murder
charge, and I thought he might tell us

where his brother was.

So I suggested Abbott interview him.

You know, I was at his wedding.

I'm godfather to his eldest son.

Howard, you said he managed to get off a
couple of shots.

Sheriff Scott Abbott and two fellow
police officers were slain on May 9.

By May 12, three days later, all of the
suspects involved had been apprehended.

Lawrence Drake was returned to custody
to serve his life sentence.

Patricia and Edward Drake were tried and
convicted and are now in prison in

Maryland.
