Tonight we go inside
the walls of Death Row,

at the Remsberg Unit - the
Texas correctional facility

at the Remsberg Unit - the

that is now home
to Jim Gardener,

the man responsible
for the murders

of at least five young women

and suspected in the
disappearances

of over a dozen more,

including the daughter of
Texas senator Andrew Brady.

Here's Pierce

The investigation
began four years ago,

when the decomposed
body of Rose Holland

was discovered in
this secluded patch

of woods right near the
Lake Livingston reservoir.

In the following years, the
bodies of four more women,

would be discovered in
areas around Lake Livingston,

with three times as many
reported to be missing

in nearby counties.

What was once considered an
idyllic and serene community

had now become a nightmarish
landscape for fear and dread.

Um, a lot of parents
were keeping

their daughters
home from school.

Like a morning mist,
the gloom of death

fell over Lake Livingston
and lingered.

to zero in on a suspect.

And all indicators seemed to
point towards a single man.

Well I remember the police
coming into the store

on several occasions
to talk to Mr. Gardener

but I never suspected it
was about those missing girls.

Three of the missing girls
had disappeared

near Allendale Community College

in the city of Livingston.

Now Gardener had
taken classes there,

and he remained a strong
presence on campus

even after he stopped
matriculating.

Eventually he began
to offer study sessions.

He called it a study club.

People knew him
from around campus,

and we would go to his place
because he always

had beer and maybe
some other stuff.

'Keekergard' and 'Sartra'.

Gardener held the
study sessions here,

in his home outside the town

Participants described
Gardener as outspoken

and charismatic, but
with a dark personality.

And when he started
talking about creating

his own religion, it just

In less than two years
after he stopped

holding the study
sessions in his home,

Rose Holland disappeared
from Lake Livingston State Park.

attribute to Gardener.

And when the body of
Brandi Evans was found

in the Trinity River just
south of Lake Livingston,

a local newspaper outed Gardener
as a suspect in the case,

igniting a media frenzy
that gained national exposure.

Now I had the chance to
interview Abbie Gardener

off the record, and even though
our conversation was private,

officials believe it
may have played

a significant role in
the events that followed.

Just three weeks after I
interviewed his mother,

turned himself in.

He confessed to the
murders of Rose Holland,

Brandi Evans, and Evelyn Zabat,

but was only willing to
point the investigators

determined to keep the other

alleged victims to himself
that after pleading guilty,
