For centuries, the United States
waterways south of the Canadian border

used by a fiercely proud people of mixed
French and Indian blood, known as

Metis. They were by choice the freight
handlers of the West, carrying in their

fragile birchbark canoes the rich fur
harvests of the Canadian North, finest

whitewater paddlers in the world.

But in 1869, the land they'd owned for
generations became part of the expanding

dominion of Canada.

and the hot -blooded Metis rose in
revolution as their homesteads were

by English -speaking settlers.

The revolution failed, but its leader, a
brilliant and impassioned man born

under a tragic star, fled to the United
States.

His name, Louis Vauvier.

on the gallows was to come true.

He did build the second revolution he
had promised his followers, and when it

too was put down, he was tried by a
Canadian court and hanged on the 16th

of November, 1885.
