Who said his boat is bigger than my house?

I think crime doesn't pay.

He'll flip up sooner or later, and when he does, he's going away forever.

I don't know. It might be worth it.

I wonder if there's a way we can get a diver out there, bug the yacht.

Hey, look.

And that's Fluke.

Who are those guys?

Look, Agent Wright, you guys are feds. I respect that.

But this is my jurisdiction.

Even after we said he could fly to Egypt, all of we were caused to mail in

for tax evasion.

You want Rossetti for taxes?

He's been distributing crack.

Heroin. Can you prove it?

Not yet.

Well, you won't. We tried.

Look, we think we can turn one of his goons.

A guy named Klesko. You got this guy in custody?

We'll find him.

If this isn't handled carefully, Rossetti finds out you're bird -dogging

these guys, he could wind up splitting the country.

I know how to make a case.

Look, Scali, to tell you the truth, I'm up for a big promotion. This could be a

very high -profile collar.

Now... You local guys are good cops and all, but something's a little out of

your league. You gotta face that.

I'm not backing off. Face that.

I'm not backing off either. Fine.

Then we'll keep each other informed, cooperate where possible.

I got a meeting.

Well, cancel it. What could be more important than federal business?

I first noticed it playing softball at last year's picnic.

I played in college, you know.

MVP three years in a row.

I couldn't see the ball coming at me. It was just a blur.

I thought it was a brain tumor or something. I was kind of relieved to

I was only going blind.

It's not going to happen.

The boss is going to meet with the review panel this afternoon.

He's going to get them to change their mind.

Honey.

It was a good thing.

Yeah. You have a very strong cake, Peggy. Trust me.

It's going to go our way.

I'd like to hope it will. It's the way insurance companies are.

But thank you.

We should get back to work.

Let's go.

Got

to

keep the thinking positive.

Yeah, I know.

Any tough assignments I could put in for?

Gang stuff, undercover work? Why?

Maybe I get lucky and take a bullet.

The life insurance would be enough for Peg's operation and then some. Who will

help her raise your kids? I want you to put that thought out of your mind or

I'll suspend you. You understand me?

Yeah.

Gallo.

Roger that.

We spotted Klesko by the marina.

We nailed him one step closer to getting Rodetti.

I told you, I was just out for a stroll. Hey, Joe, we got quite a file on you

here. If we bring half these charges, you'll be strolling straight to the

What can I say? A whole lot of cases of mistaken identity.

How long have you been working for Rossetti?

I don't work for Rossetti.

Look, I want a lawyer now.

The phone's right over there.

Give me an outside line.

We're not going to get anything out of him. He's too scared of Rossetti.

Yeah.

Hey, Klesko.

You won't be needing a lawyer after all.

We're going to let you go.

I haven't even posted bail.

Don't matter. We're dropping the charges.

All of them?

What's the catch?

No catch. You're free to go.

Say hello to Rossetti.

I don't even know Rossetti.

Hey, wait a minute.

Wait a minute.

You're trying to make it look like I cut a deal here, like I rolled over.

Joey, would we do something like that?

Rossetti will kill me.

You? A perfect stranger?

This ain't gonna fly, Scali. This ain't gonna fly. I got my rights. Arrest me.

Bye -bye.

Of course, if Rossetti's gonna think you did a deal, why not do one?

That way we can protect you.

Well, you could just walk out the door, try to convince him that we just got you

go for no reason at all.

Rossetti would buy that, right?

I don't know much. I... You know, but I, uh... I know a little.

I'll go tell the feds we're getting a little help.

We were just trying to get ready for Groverton. We don't want to get beat

Two things.

First, this is a precinct, not a gym.

Second,

the key is a little backspin.

Hey, you all dried off?

Yeah. Where's that file on Rossetti?

No, it's not.

The clerk's must have screwed up again. I'll talk to him. Good. Leave it on my

desk. I'm leaving. To meet with the review panel.

Boss, thanks a lot for going to bat for us. Hey, between your great record and

my golden tongue, they can't say no.

I'm afraid the answer's no, Commissioner.

We stand by our original interpretation of the contract.

Keratoconus is a dystrophy of the cornea. I know that.

With Peggy Hibbs, it's in an advanced stage.

A corneal transplant is the only... Treatment really is not the issue here,

Commissioner. Then what is?

That her condition predated our company's being named as this city's

carrier. Our contract clearly states that any pre -existing medical

are excluded.

Have you ever seen John's service record? He's won every medal that you

He's dedicated, honored. I've never seen a better cop.

I know you folks have a business to run.

But are we really going to let this woman go blind because of the

Doesn't your department have a fund established for officers that need...

tapped.

We're trying to raise money through collections, but times are tough for

everyone.

Look, this woman has small children.

I'd be in favor of petitioning the board of directors.

How soon can you do that?

Next meeting's in six weeks.

Not good enough.

That's what I told him.

What else can you do?

Well, a friend of mine's on the insurance commission. I have a call in.

If there's any one guy who can make the impossible happen, it's the boss.

In the meantime, I'm speaking for all the wives in the precinct. If there's

anything that we could do, just say the word.

That's very kind.

Right now, I can't really think of anything.

I don't know.

Maybe a little help with the kids.

I can take care of my own children, John.

No, I didn't mean...

I won't even offer you guys anything.

It's important.

She won't admit it, but she's scared to death, man.

Every day it's getting worse.

It's not over yet.

Board of Directors, Insurance Commission.

We just don't want it. Crap.

You won't even get to see your own kids grow up. We're not going to let that

happen, all right?

Whatever it takes, we're going to get her that operation, okay?

What do we think? We're going to get killed by Groverton again.

How many years in a row?

Six.

So

you

must be the chief.

Commissioner.

Whatever.

And you are?

Jumbo Jim Nack, Syracuse, All -American.

I don't believe I've seen you around before.

I work in, uh... Records department.

Yeah, records department.

Yeah, what do you do?

Filing, updating, cross -referencing. Yeah, that.

Yeah, he's still under the ropes. Just joined a week ago. Just in time for the

Groverton game.

Huh?

Well, Jumbo, welcome to the department.

That's not me.

I'm steady.

Relax. If I wanted you hurt, you'd already be hurt, believe me.

Hey, he made one hell of a butt today, now in Joey Flesco.

Man makes a play like that for me.

I treat him right.

So how's the city treating you lately, Johnny?

More to the point, how's he treating Peggy?

You threaten my wife, I'll kill you. Hey, I'm not threatening.

I'm offering to help. I hear you could use it.

We don't need your kind of help.

You know, a man offers to buy you a drink.

Well, he might offer you other things, too.

You haven't figured it out yet.

You see, you protect them. They don't protect you.

You put your life on the line for them.

They give you nothing.

The question's real simple, John.

You want Peggy to see you again or not?

If the answer's yes, well, then maybe we can do some business.

The DA's office has already called four times. They still don't have Brodick's

file. The arraignment's in an hour, Ronnie.

How's Glasgow?

Just put him in the safe house.

He says Rossetti's shipping some drugs in later in the week. That's all he

knows. Says Rossetti likes to play everything close to the vest. Bad time?

I had an interesting discussion last night with a friend of ours.

Rossetti.

Where? O 'Brien's.

He bellies up next to me and starts telling me what a great guy I am and...

How it's a shame Peg's got to go through with this operation.

And he wanted to help you out.

What did he want you to do?

He wanted me to tell him where we're keeping Klesko.

How much was he offering you?

We're going to get into the details tonight.

Boss, I can get in with him.

The guy's got a huge ego, thinks he can turn me around.

Can he?

What's that mean?

John, you're a good cop. Don't get me wrong. It's just... Look, this could be

very tough on you.

Well, if I didn't think I could handle it, I wouldn't be here.

Listen, we finally got a chance to nail this guy.

Let's do it.

All right, John.

Paulie and I will work on a plan.

We'll talk to you later.

All right, good.

We better tell Wright what we're doing.

The dumbest thing I ever heard.

His wife's going blind.

He can't afford the operation.

So you're going to put him in with some guy who's going to throw money at him?

I've known John Hibbs since he was a rookie.

And he's not that kind of cop, right?

No one is until he's been screwed by the system in their hour of need.

John has never been confused about where the law breaks.

He's human, isn't he? He's never faced what he's facing now. We trust our

people.

Don't give me that sanctimonious crap. Hey, he came forward. He's not hiding

anything. Not yet.

I made the decision.

It stands.

Scali, this blows up in your face.

The boys in Washington are going to build you a new elementary canal.

Ooh!

We're talking painful.

Thanks for your support.

I'll keep you posted.

You don't hate me because I'm beautiful, but I agree with him.

We're taking a big chance with John.

We trust our people.

Excuse me. The DA's office just called. Our records department sent the wrong

Brodick file.

Ronnie, who sent Brodick's file down to the DA's office?

Uh, that was, um... Is there a problem? Who, Ronnie?

Mike, did you handle Brodick?

It wasn't Mike. It wasn't Jimmy Hoffa, either. I did Brodick.

Jumbo? Hey, coach.

Jumbo's still getting used to our system. You know, I can handle

late. He walked.

A guy who assaulted two old ladies in the park has evaded justice because of

incompetence.

Where did you work before this?

I worked in Garvin Park. I hustled two -on -two games with a buddy of mine.

I can explain.

You mean you've never actually worked in an office before?

Hey, I missed a layup. It happens.

Not here it doesn't.

Hey, what's this guy Hansel me for?

Do you want to win your game or not?

He can learn, boss, I swear.

How? He doesn't know his alphabet from his elbow. Hey, short stuff.

You want to run that by me again?

I'll run it by you again.

You're fired.

Without me, you guys are going to get clobbered.

Out!

even the simplest things.

That's tough enough for a seasoned vice cop to go undercover.

I just hope John can keep his head on straight.

You really think he could cross all of them? No.

Maybe.

The only thing that I know for sure is he's going to be tempted to take that

money.

Isn't there anything else you could try with the insurance company?

Maybe another hearing?

They're digging in their heels.

You know, this world isn't supposed to be fair.

A guy like Rossetti can afford 50 operations.

John can't even... Hey,

let's never take anything for granted.

John, John, my new best friend.

Just a precaution, Johnny.

Don't take any offense.

I'm not taking.

They make a great veal, Marcello.

You hungry?

Something to drink?

No, thanks.

So talk to me.

Clisco could be a problem.

They're squeezing him pretty hard.

Where is he now?

We were going to talk about some money first.

For the location on Klesko.

Things have changed.

We're going to need a little more than that.

That's all it's worth.

I'll take care of Klesko myself.

Permanently.

You know, you're... Pricing yourself right out of the market, honey.

Susie here will do the job for a weekend in Atlantic City.

Susie here would have to find him first.

Scali's being extra cautious. He's moving him every couple of days.

All in or no deal.

You choose.

You don't make it to the park a lot.

I don't want you to.

They put the thumbscrews to close. Klusko, he'll go to court and bury you.

And I want the cash up front, honey.

You know, Johnny, you're taking to this like a duck to water.

They're moving Klusko tomorrow.

I'll do it then.

It's me.

Beep, beep.

Ready? Yeah, if you can pay yourself away from Wile E. Coyote.

Bye.

Beep, beep.

Hey, what are you doing, man?

Boss, he just grabbed my gun.

He's dead.

Okay, fellas.

Thanks.

Anybody home?

I was great, wasn't I? They didn't expect to think.

Yeah, you'll get the opera.

We're square.

Then I'm out of here.

You sure you don't want protection?

At least for a while. No, I don't want any cops following me around.

Besides, Rosetti thinks I'm dead. The best protection a guy could get. As long

as you stay on the West Coast like we agreed.

Surf's up, dude.

Escort him out of town. Make sure no one sees him.

Hey.

It's the craziest stunt I've ever seen.

I can't believe it's gonna work.

Oh, it'll work.

If it doesn't make Rosetti trust John, nothing will. Well, maybe he never will.

It already does.

Here's the payoff.

Five big ones.

When are you gonna see him again? Tonight.

I'm going to start pumping him for some of his problems.

Hey! Hey! Here!

Told you Joe was okay.

He's holding on.

Supposedly, he's risking his whole career pushing a button on Klesko.

5K wouldn't even be a down payment.

What, did you look it up in a paid chart?

Look, I know you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but this... It

doesn't feel right.

I appreciate your concern.

the lanes. You've got to play some defense.

You guys play like this, Groverton's going to kill us. They're going to kill

anyway. You fired our best player.

Now we've got to spend another year listening to Groverton's trash talk. I'm

tired of it.

He was a ringer. You guys want to win that way?

We have to. Well, we don't.

That's something Groverton would do, and we're Eastbridge.

Give him the Gettysburg speech.

You guys ever heard of Gettysburg?

I didn't know they had a team.

A small Union regiment was guarding the northern flank of a hill called Little

Round Top. Now, they lose that hill, they lose the war.

They're out of ammo.

They're outmanned three to one.

And the Rebs are charging up the hill. What do they do?

They fix bayonets and they charge right down at the enemy.

So what happened?

They stomped them. That's what happened. And they went down in history for

beating impossible odds.

Now, sure, we lost Jumbo Jim. So what?

If we beat Groverton anyway, they'll never live it down.

That's right. Yeah.

to the insurance company again. Trying to move the board of directors thing

along. Oh.

Good.

We're doing everything we can think of, John.

We're going to get this done the right way.

You've had a great career, John.

Don't spoil it by doing something you don't have to do.

What are you talking about?

Where's the rest of the money?

For the hit on Clefkoe. You have it all.

Rosetta gave me five grand.

You have it.

Oh, what do you think I'm keeping? I think you'd have every reason to.

In your place, I'd be tempted to do the same thing.

But of course you wouldn't.

What matters is what you do.

Is this what Peg would want? You to go against everything you believed in? What

Peg would want is to see Adam play in Little League and Chris graduate in high

school. John, I don't want to hear about it. What I believe in. What I believe

in doesn't matter anymore.

It's just, will she see or won't she?

You know what it's like watching someone you love lose?

I have the power to help her.

And what kind of a husband would I be if I don't?

The doc says she's got to get that operation within a week or she doesn't

chance.

And Ruth's idiot scum, Tony.

Why don't we let his blood money do something good for a change?

What do you want me to do?

This makes you a part of it.

To a new and prosperous partnership.

You did good, Johnny.

Klesko could have hurt me.

Did you get yourself a lawyer yet?

Well, if it was a shooting, they'll have to investigate, no?

Yeah, the union will get me a lawyer.

You don't seem too worried about it. I mean, I don't want you hiring some hack.

I'll get you one of the best.

It's better to play it down, huh?

A guy attacked me. What could I do?

Open and shut.

Good.

Now on to business.

I'm bringing a shipment in tomorrow night.

What I need from you is this.

Tomorrow's harbor schedule.

Wants to know when the patrol boats are going to be between 10 and midnight.

That's what we've been waiting for. Form of detail. We're going to get Agent

Brandon Wright here as promotion.

Did Rossetti tell you anything else?

What do you mean?

Well, sometimes under duress, guys who go undercover forget to report back

everything they should.

No. Nothing else.

We got the schedule over to Rossetti. We'll be waiting for him.

What was that all about?

Hibbs is dirty.

He's a good cop. Good cops don't pocket the spare change from a sting to the

tune of 20 grand.

I checked up on him.

Set up his wife's operation for Tuesday. The only place he could have got the

money was Rossetti.

Now you got to pull a plug on this.

I told him to use the money for the surgery.

I thought I was doing the right thing.

Your man committed a crime.

And so did you.

You must be out of your... Look, we nail Rossetti.

We can sell off his assets and return the money to the policeman's fund. What

we don't nail Rossetti?

Then you can take the 20 grand out of my hide.

I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize his case.

But when we send Rossetti to jail, you're going to join him.

He won't know our units, anything?

Nothing yet.

It's almost midnight. I don't see Rosetti.

He'll be here.

Our information says he comes to every drop.

There. You see it?

This is B -1 to all units.

The boat has just entered the harbor.

Stand by.

Now!

Department of Police.

Shut off all engines.

Prepare for boarding.

Here, grab this rope.

Police! Under arrest.

For what?

Failing to turn on your lights after sunset.

This.

And for smuggling drugs.

I don't care about you. I only want Rosetti.

Who? Come on. You're going to do ten years to save his neck? You wouldn't

the time of day to save yours.

Where is he? I don't know what you're talking about.

I'd help you if I could believe me. I was supposed to meet a guy here. I

given a name.

Imagine that.

Rosetti didn't show. I wonder why.

Meaning what?

Well, you're the super spy. Figure it out. Maybe Rosetti doesn't make every

himself. Your information says he does.

Maybe he's on Rosetti's path.

Maybe we all are.

Maybe so.

Rosetti's going to know your tip. That's all.

I'll see to it you get home safe, and we'll get protection for you and Peggy.

Let's go.

Seriously, boss.

I'm okay.

It must have been embarrassing for you tonight.

I bet the feds are ticked. Probably don't trust you guys anymore.

I thought he was supposed to be out west.

Yeah, well, he came back to collect from a bookie.

One of my guys happened to see him.

Not in time to stop your seizure of my shipment tonight, unfortunately.

But in time to save my neck.

Which is the main thing.

Yeah, Klesko.

He wasn't too bright.

But then again, neither are you. You don't even know the difference between

alive and dead.

You see, that's dead.

Alive.

Dead.

Alive.

For now.

What do you want?

I want my million dollars worth of cocaine back.

And you're going to get it from me, Tony.

Or going blind will be the least of Peggy's problems.

What are you doing here, boss?

It's after midnight.

Whenever you're available, officer, outside my door in ten minutes. Pop

out. Yes, sir.

Backing for a trip?

This isn't what it looks like.

Well, it never is with you, Scali. That's why I put a man in your shop.

Nice work, Charlie.

Look, if I don't deliver these to Resetti within 45 minutes... You don't

paid, right?

Resetti's got John and his wife.

He's gonna kill them.

God, you never quit, do you?

We'll sort all this out later. Right now, consider yourself in custody.

Do me a favor.

Don't take me out in cuffs.

I'm not in front of my men.

All right, put him away.

Let's go.

One thing I just want to say to all the men and women who have worked with me

all these years.

Arrest these men.

Arrest them. You're a federal agent.

Take their guns.

Put these federal agents in jail.

You're insane, Scali. You're sortifiable.

Washington is going to hear about this. You're going to do time in federal

prison.

Is the perimeter clear?

Is he alone?

All clear.

A man of his word.

You know, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Tony.

Where's John and Peggy? No, no, no, no, no.

You see, I get my merchandise, then you get yours.

Your drugs were in the harbor.

Where? In a boat with a slow leak.

In about 20 minutes, your million dollars worth of coke is gonna be on the

bottom of it. So I suggest you get Peggy and John out here now.

We got a real player here, huh?

Let him out!

Are you all right?

Tony?

We're all right.

Safe and sound.

I'm a man of my word, too.

Where's my drugs?

Peggy and John are gonna walk with me back to the car.

If I see any of your guys within 50 feet, the deal's off.

Once we get to the car, I'll tell you where your drugs are.

Nobody gets in the car till I get my stuff.

Come on.

Come on, John.

It's all right, Peggy. I'm going to take you home.

Into the gangway!

Get in the back seat.

As soon as I start driving, all hell's going to break loose, so keep your heads

down.

It's all there, boss.

Nice doing business with you, Tony.

Which one do we kill first?

Vision to vision.

What's happening?

Stay down.

They're a little hard to get started when the ignition wires have been cut.

I ought to write a book.

Write that book, Vincent.

Call it my hundred years in Attica.

Take it. Take it.

That's what I call coming close.

The sharpshooter's waiting for you to start driving.

It's the best laid plan.

Yeah, speaking of which, we got one angry fed down in our jail. What's the

for him?

Better open a cell door right now. You're under arrest. Everybody in this

precinct is under arrest for obstruction of justice, detaining federal officers

against their will, and interfering in a federal investigation.

And where in the hell is your boss?

And I'm happy to report the largest seizure of drugs in Eastbridge history.

Over $3 million of Vincent Rossetti's assets will be distributed to various

agencies and to the Eastbridge Policeman's Fund.

I wish I could take credit for it, but I can't.

Federal Agent Brandon Wright and his men are responsible for this stunning

victory in a war against drugs.

He's the man you want to talk to.

I'd rather not comment on specifics, but I can say that this entire operation is

testimony to the cooperation that exists between federal authorities and local

law enforcement.

Could you tell us the names to who was involved in the crime? Can you really

send me more information on topics? Not at this time.

Please do.

How'd you know it was me?

I can hear you smiling.

The doctor says you're going to see.

Danny's here, too.

How are you feeling?

I can't wait to get home and see the kids.

See the kids.

Tony, thanks for everything.

I just hope... What?

That I recognize everybody when I see them again.

Well, I'm still the same.

Six foot two, built like Adonis, full head, a wavy head.

Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, Israel!

It's all right. We can still do it.

All we got to do is fix Bayonet.

Remember, Geddy.

Let's go. Back on D. Back on D.

What? Let's go. Move the ball. Move the ball.

Get the big guy.

Double team.

Triple team.

Great game.

Okay, maybe we lost the battle, but we haven't lost the war.

Look, you guys, we learned something out there, a lot more important than

winning or losing.

You know what that was?

It was what we learned is character.

Character, something you can't buy with a ringer.

And you know what happens to every team that has character?

Just like Gettysburg, they come back stronger than ever.

Give him the Valley Forge speech.

You guys ever hear about Valley Forge?
